It may seem like I’ve gone away for good and quit my blog, never to return… But that isn’t so. I’ve been working on a project. I dedicated just about every available minute to this since my last article (whereas it was a project amongst others before that).

To those of you that have played Peregrine, it is a similar project. Just bigger and better. 6 character classes, 4 races, 40 spells, 90 illustrated foes, 6 bosses…

Pretty much everything that was missing in Peregrine is now in Underworld so as to make it a real, full fledged old school adventure gaming experience.

I am currently finishing up testing and creating a site dedicated to my game projects.

I will announce the official release in my next post… Very soon!

Great thanks for still being here!

This article is about Z Coach (all Windows, 3.5MB, no adware), a simple application I created when I realized that tracking progress was a great way to stay focused on goals (in this case weight loss), and create habits.

As it turned out, it helped but it wasn’t enough. Back when I created this the results that followed were rather poor. The same old loss of weight due to temporary focus and effort, followed by very discouraging weight gain.

It doesn’t replace understanding how weight loss works (which is what my free weight loss plan is based on). But since it does help, here it is, as a backup tool.

5 Primary Functions

Once you’ve created a user (much like Z Planner, multiple users are possible, making it useable by more than one person on the same computer), there are five sub-screens. You can use all of them for maximum functionality (but also more tedious) or just pick and choose.

Choose Target Values

This form is quick and only needs to be used once, unless you wish to update. Simply pick a start date and a target date for your weight loss goal to be achieved. Enter a target weight and, optionally, a target pulse (rising pulse in state of rest is a sign that you are overdoing training, while a slowing rate means your heart is growing stronger).

Add Exercises

If you’ve referred to the weight loss plan before, and possibly have read the article on muscle type, you may have picked several training activities (either for strength/speed, endurance, or both). In this form you can enter each exercise and assign them an intensity. Intensity will be used to determine a point value (points you will earn each time you’ve performed the exercise).

Those can be specific (push-up / sit-up series), or broad (an hour at the gym or just going for a 30 minute walk).

Z Coach gives you a lot of liberty for determining goals and how you will evaluate yourself down the line.

Daily Exercise

At this point you are tracking fitness activities. If you haven’t done any of your exercises, pick No Workout Today. Otherwise, select one of the exercises you have done and enter the number of times it was carried out. Repeat for each exercise. Their point values will be awarded accordingly.

Meal Evaluation

There are plenty of things to focus on when getting back in shape. Chew carefully, drink a lot of water, don’t snack, have fiber, stay off fast carbs (except on cheat day).

All of these are included in this form, and points are awarded for each aspect that is in line with the plan. Note that skipping meals takes away points!

Positive foods would be: slow carbs, magnesium, an omega-3 source, vitamin D, chromium. All of those micronutrients that fend off insulin resistance! Those can be taken care of with simple over-the-counter supplements.

This is by far the most tedious form to fill out. Try sticking with it until you’ve developped the required habits. Personally, I rather quickly switched to only tracking weight in the last form.

Progress Log

This last form is there for you to track progress. Enter your weight once a day, or once a week and hopefully your weight report will look something like this:

Weight graph from sept 08 to march 09

If you want it to, it will! It can even be better, you can learn and do things right from the start (I had milk for instance at the time, still unknowing of the insulinic index problem).

Note that you can read more details on how each form works by clicking on the corresponding help button once the app is running.

If you think it can help, download it here. It is freeware and doesn’t have any junk bundled. Just like Z Planner. Honest. (Works with all Windows and weighs about 3.5MB)

Something just hit me… People in my RSS feed might actually be waiting for a post on this subject. Updating the original post may not be enough…

So here it is, another unplanned post (hey, those are fun!) to announce that SnS – Peregrine’s Song has actually been evailable for a few days now…

Back on the original post

For those that have no idea what I am talking about, SnS is an old school 3D perspective (3D as it was for the likes of Dungeon Master, M&M, Eye of the Beholder). It’s big, it’s fun, it’s nostalgic and it’s free.

v1.07 may finally be free of all bugs, both major and minor, but then again… it may not be. I say this because I’ve thought before that the damn critters were all dead but some remained. And sometimes new ones pop up (spontaneous generation, I swear )

Peregrine’s Song 1.07 is an article from: Creative Lab

This is an unplanned quick post in reaction to David Gallant releasing a workout mix tape I am listening to as I am writing this, + the fact that it is his birthday and he shamelessly asked to be showered with gifts on Twitter.

I don’t know David but caught a retweet, so now I do, a little!

The benefit for you? The music might bring that extra bit of motivation you need for that next workout, and if you’ve been here before you probably already know I consider being fit as a pillar for long-term creativity. Besides, it starts off with Daft Punk!

Like all mix tapes, there will be sequences you like more than others. And like most mix tapes, this is meant for ladies. I downloaded anyway .

So happy birthday David, my gift to you today is a little link love!

Note: this is a free article. I don’t sell information here!

I have six “affiliate sites”. Two of them work pretty well, but they could work better (and those that don’t work should). These past few weeks I concentrated on sorting out what works, what doesn’t and why, so as to put together a reliable affiliate site “blueprint” that I could follow to enhance performance of those I have and create better ones in the future.

This page is my blueprint, and I am very excited about it. There are a few things here that I am quite sure you never read elsewhere. Things I never thought of doing before I finally sat down and decided to thoroughly study and build a real method.

1. Be found by people looking for solutions to a problem.
– keyword targetting, 5-10 page website, on-site SEO, off-site SEO (quick backlinking strategy).
2. Give them a solution to their problem.
3. Offer a product they will need to apply the solution (affiliate program, dropship product).
4. Apply a checklist of conversion strategies.

It should be very much worth ten minutes of your time. That being said, I cannot make any guarantees concerning anyone’s future earnings. Creating affiliate sites requires skills that you may or may not have. In short, for legal reasons, I am making it clear that I do not accept responsibility for your actions, which I am sure most people will understand.

This affiliate marketing plan lies on a rather unconventional principle. Most affiliates either send prospects directly to the product site or has them land on a page that describes the product and recommends it. Some cheat by attracting readers with page titles or ads that read – “Is product X a scam?” and then go about telling how, after all, it isn’t and presenting a recommendation and affiliate link.

I believe most people are smarter than that, and catch the “trick”.

The typical affiliate marketing approach

(not recommended)

- prospect has a problem and looks for a solution.
- The affiliate presents a solution to the problem that is in direct competition with all the other affiliates and all the competing products (and their affiliates). Advertising costs a fortune due to competition.
- The prospect clicks through one of the offers, comes back to his search results, tries another…
- Conversion rates are very low (well below 1%) and profitability is generally negative.

The fake review affiliate marketing approach

(not recommended)

- prospect has already checked out the product offer.
- prospect has doubts so he looks for an online review of the product.
- prospect sees something like “is product X a scam?”, or worse, “product X is a scam!!”
- prospect reads how product X is a scam to some, but is in fact not a scam at all, but really recommended. He spots the affiliate link (they’ve been around long enough, people know what they are).
- prospect doesn’t trust the review, and goes off to look for another one or
- prospect decides to buy, but despises the approach and does whatever he can to circumvent the affiliate link (like returning to the site on his own, he already knows where it is) or
- prospect is disgusted and goes for a different product, or no product at all (most likely).
- conversion rates are very low (well below 1%).

My Preferred Approach

Give people the solution they are looking for, and offer a product they will need to apply it.

Instead of acting as a gateway to the product offer, this approach gives added value to the prospect. They are better armed to reach their goal, more motivated to go through with it and therefore more likely to need some tools. Your benefit comes from selling one or more of those necessary tools and earn a commission.

Tools can be further information, a membership for support, a hard good… anything that will help the prospect use your content to reach his goal. The more that tool is required, the more likely the reader is to buy it. If it is perceived as “nice to have” but unnecessary, web copy will need to be more convincing.

I believe my approach is a better “funnel” than the other two. For one thing, it isn’t deceitful. Most people won’t buy, and they go away with a positive experience. It contributes. And some do buy and make you money. They go off with a positive experience and an exciting project. In both cases, the experience is positive.

You make money and get to boost your karma in the process!

Finding a product to sell for a commission.

Most people look for products with high conversion rates / payouts and work from there. I prefer:

- make a list of things you know enough about to teach people something valuable (or would like to learn about and be willing to do the research).
- alongside each item on the list, add what kind of product or service they will need to apply what you will teach them.
- look for such products and services online, and find good quality with an affiliate program (or drop-shipping program – more on that below) that give you a reasonably high payout.

I believe you have a much more potent selling combination than with the previous approach.

Affiliate Marketing Plan Implementation

1. What do I know enough about (or would like to learn about) to write a 5-15 page tutorial?

2. What tools are required to apply my tutorial?

3. Which of these tools can sold online with a sizeable commission through:

a. an affiliate program
b. a drop-shipping company (more on that below)
c. my reader isn’t likely to already have one (depending on how he formulated his search)
d. my reader is preferably not a complete beginner (most beginners simply don’t start, while people with some experience are more likely to want to improve and act on your recommendations).

4. Use the Google keyword tool to determine the keyphrase you will base your site on. Make a shortlist of potential 2-4 word keyphrases. (Don’t necessarily rely on keyword suggestions after entering popular keywords though. Too many people may be getting those same suggestions!)

5. Check the competition by searching the keyphrase on Google. If the ten pages (the actual pages, not the site’s front page) that appear on the first page result have a PR2 or above, the competition to get on page 1 is likely to be too fierce. Try the next phrase on your list. (How to determine PR below).

6. Once you’ve found your keyphrase, write your tutorial and put it online while being careful to follow basic seo rules:

a. Put your keyphrase in page titles.
b. Put your keyphrase in title, subtitle (headings 1-4), bold, and italics tags.
c. Use your keyphrase at the beginning and end of each page.
d. Use the words in the keyphrase as link anchors between pages.
e. Do as much of the above as you can while staying readable by humans.
f. Using Wordpress makes the process easier (especially the content publishing and inter-linking).
g. Using Hostgator allows you to host unlimited websites with one account (the only extra cost per new domain is a $10 a year registration fee). This seriously cuts down on costs.

7. A website with good on-site SEO isn’t enough for good rankings. You need off-site SEO as well (dofollow backlinks with your keywords or keyphrase in the anchor text – more on that in the resource section below).

Writing a good tutorial may require a couple days of work. Putting it online (following the conversion checklist below) should require another couple hours. Then getting backlinks will require about an hour more, and an extra page. Once set, little maintenance or monitoring is required. It is pretty much “set and forget”.

If your site doesn’t make it to page 1 after a few weeks, you will need either more backlinks or more content. Don’t be too ambitious to prevent this (don’t choose keywords that are too competitive). I believe from experience that it is more profitable to build a small new site than it is to struggle getting one site to break through on overly competitive keywords.

Increasing Affiliate Marketing Conversions

Getting many people to read your affiliate offer is the most difficult part of affiliate marketing. With the above procedure, you should easily get 1000 people a month to view your offer, which should be enough to convert into a few monthly sales, or a couple dozen. At $30-50 commission per sale, an affiliate site can generate up to $1000 in commissions a month.

Keep in mind that the numbers aren’t high enough for statistics to be viable, so don’t expect consistent monthly revenue from each site. Think in terms of yearly revenue instead.

Trying to go beyond that figure is, in my opinion, counter-productive. At this point, I think it is better to just make another, then another until it adds up to the desired level of revenue.

That being said, there are a few things to implement to quickly optimize an affiliate site’s performance.

Instead of concentrating on increasing readership, which, past a certain point, requires a big time commitment, I find it much more productive to focus on increasing conversion.

1. Offer a bonus to those of your readers that buy through your affiliate links.

2. Automate the delivery of that bonus whenever possible (more on that below), so as to not have to be permanently available to manually send the bonus to new buyers.

3. Review the efficiency of your current content. Does it offer a solution to the problem the reader expressed when he did the search that led to your site? Does that solution require a product to be carried out better? Is your reader seeing both the offer and the solution?

4. Basic conversion principles (excerpt from doshdosh):

Reviews by other users (found online, or on vendor’s website).

Fast delivery (for digital, instant. For hard goods, overnight delivery availability).

Clear visibility of the offer, alongside (and/or woven into) the free value provided by the affiliate site.

Scarcity (for hard goods, mention limited availability). This is one of the main drawbacks of digital goods. Scarcity claims aren’t credible as supply is unlimited (and the reader knows it).

High value given for free (generally a solution to the problem expressed by the search).

“Primal appeal” – all things relating to food, sex and danger.

Limit choices (should only offer 1-3 products).

Use the word “You”.

Encourage visitors to make a commitment: ie - make public that they will solve their problem, or achieve the goal they set for themselves (thanks to your free content + product offer).

Images of similarity – attractive people that fit your target market’s demographic profile.

Tell a story your reader will want to identify with (usually related to the problem at hand).

5. Don’t spend TOO much time tweaking. Sometimes increasing revenue can be more simply achieved with a brand new site, rather than by trying to increase an existing site’s performance (and sometimes failing, or even getting the opposite effect).

Offering a great bonus serves two purposes. The first is obvious: extra incentive. The second is to decrease “leakage”, or:

- people using their own referral links and cutting you out of the picture.

They usually do that not knowing that it constitutes fraud, and can lead to confiscation of their earnings on just about all affiliate marketplaces out there.

- people seeing the offer at work and carrying out the purchase at home… (or vice-versa)

Pay Per Click Advertising

PPC is, as a general rule, not a part of this plan. It is difficult to run a profitable PPC campaign, and it requires constant monitoring.

That being said, as with all general rules, there can be exceptions. This depends on the keywords you target, and the conversion performance of your site. If the right conditions are met (low competition, good conversion, high payout per sale), then PPC can lead to increased performance.

But never consider PPC as a set-and-forget solution. Adwords requires monitoring (page score and cost per click can vary overnight), and other platforms provide little traffic on low demand keywords (as well as lower quality prospects that tend to bounce a lot more).

Note: As stated in the Adwords documentation, a successful campaign with good click-through rates and high page scores is beneficial for other campaigns. If you have one, the next campaign becomes easier to optimize. If you have several, even better.

Also keep in mind that traffic from PPC doesn’t behave the same way as traffic from organic traffic does. Most people know that they clicked on an advertisement. They come with their guard up.

Long-Term Benefits and Fun

The advantage of this method is that you can create as many new sites as you like, that gradually increase your income with very low overhead cost ($10 a year for each new domain, $10 a month for hosting of all your domains, a couple tools to pick up along the way that cost under $100 and optionally membership to a wholesale dropship supplier).

Once set, an affiliate site that ranks on search engines continues to work for you with little to no maintenance (passive income).

With practice, each new site becomes better targeted and performs better than the previous. A lot of trial and error is necessary when you start out with no guidance. I hope this quick online affiliate marketing plan will cut out most of the learning curve for you.

Resources

Don’t miss my article on finding your passion. If this plan helps you find your passion and live it to the fullest, then my mission is accomplished There are also resources for health, fitness, creativity and more so be sure to look around!

The Google Toolbar allows you to determine a web page’s rank (PR from not ranked to 10) from Google’s point of view. This helps evaluate competition for keyphrases you are considering for a new site.

Hosting that allows unlimited websites for a fixed cost (I only recently discovered hostgator and have been paying about $90 a year for each domain! What a noob I will be transfering them gradually!) – affiliate link.

Free content publishing solution with good on-site SEO: Wordpress.

New FTC regulations governing paid recommendations (common sense practices such as disclosing the affiliate relationship, these regulations act in favor of protecting consumers).

Backlinking strategy and tools: see my previous article on dofollow backlinks (and how to get a few hundred easily). This is off-site SEO, the most important and most difficult. This resource should be enough for the successful implementation of this plan.

Automated Bonus Delivery (and customer list building) solution: This allows you to send a bonus email to people that buy from your Clickbank affiliate links (works only with Clickbank) – affiliate links.

Drop-shipping product sourcing: Drop shipping companies can be an interesting alternative (or complement) to affiliate programs by adding a wide range of hard good options (as opposed to digital / downloadable products or services). Hard goods have more perceived value. It is also much easier and more credible to act on the scarcity effect (only x left in stock!) whereas a digital product (or print on demand T-shirts) cannot be out of stock.

There is a list price, and you choose your price. The idea is to make the best possible profit margin while staying reasonable. This is often used to sell on Ebay. You can try, but a quick look on Ebay will show you that that is where all the competition is (driving prices and profit margins way down). Your own 1000 visit a month website with a goal of 20 sales a month (with a profit margin of ~$30-50) and optionally a digital product on the side seems more promising (but you can direct traffic directly to your ebay or amazon listing to use their transaction systems).

I just started using Dropshipdesign after careful consideration amongst a few others (studying their terms and conditions, reviews and pricing). Affiliate link.

Doba is only for US and Canada residents. From what I’ve read around their pricing is an issue (and therefore your potential profit margin).

Megagoods has a clause I think is dangerous – they reserve the right to have you prepay merchandise on account of your customer if they have doubts about fraud. Not being in any position at all to prevent fraud (much less than they are), being forced to take full risk on their behalf for products that can sell for $300 seems way too risky.

TradeTang and DhTrade seem to sell cracked games and software from China (among other things). My future plans in life don’t include any kind of stay in state penitentiaries (or equivalent) so thanks but no thanks.

Conclusion

I’ve done too much with too little method. This has seriously hindered my progress. Writing this blueprint gave me a process I needed to take my online affiliate ventures to the next level. Each new site will be more carefully planned, and existing sites either improved, salvaged or closed down.

A good affiliate site is like a great recipe. There are quite a few quality ingredients required, and just one missing ingredient takes away a lot of the “flavor”. The above checklist should help you make dishes that give great value to your future readers and retribute you with growing income!

I hope this helps you achieve your goals following a more direct route than mine

Don’t hesitate to leave comments or questions, I will answer them to the best of my ability!

Understanding how hunger works helps figure out the best diet & stick to it.

Hunger is a tricky, complex mechanism.

Hormones, nervous signals and psychology come into play together to make one big mess and various types of feelings. Part of this complexity is due to there being a set of sub-mechanisms that trigger the hunger sensation, and completely different sub-mechanisms that trigger the feeling of dietery satisfaction (or satiety).

Ultimately, when you understand them, you can control hunger to some degree (although not completely). So let’s look into all those mechanisms. Then we’ll see how you can act to control it.

Hormones

First let’s have a quick run-down on what hormones are and how they work.

Hormones are chemical messengers. They are secreted when a message needs to be sent to a part of the body where that specific hormone’s receptors are located. The bloodstream serves as a means of communication, simply by transporting the hormone molecules to those receptors. Once they get there, they “fit” into the receptor, much like a key in a hole. This triggers a specific chain of events that the hormone was meant to cause. In this case, hormones that trigger hunger cause neurological events that lead to your feeling hungry.

There are two hormones that contribute to telling your brain that you are hungry. The most important is ghrelin, but a high concentration of glucagon in the bloodstream also cause hunger generating signals to the brain.

Ghrelin is secreted in various places in the body that detect conditions that require you to eat.

The liver secretes ghrelin when its glycogen storage runs low (glycogen is in fact a strand of sugar molecules assembled for storage). This makes sense, because if storage is running low, it means that blood sugar levels have been low long enough to deplete it.

The stomach secretes ghrelin when it is empty.

The pancreas and hypothalamus are both capable of detecting low sugar levels in the bloodstream. When they do, both contribute to the secretion of ghrelin.

Glucagon is a molecule that is secreted by the pancreas when blood sugar levels diminish. Most of its receptors are located in the liver, and the result of the hormonal message is the breaking down of glycogen strands into sugar molecules that are released in the bloodstream to keep blood sugar levels constant. It also triggers signals that amplify the hunger sensation.

There are completely different hormones that cause the opposite effect (satiety).

Leptin is secreted by fat cells when excess fat and sugar is being stored. Leptin also plays a part in fat breakdown (lipolysis), but this part is not well known. It has only been demonstrated in empirical studies that showed that decreased leptin secretion slowed down weight loss. This would account at least in part for the “slowed metabolism” that occurs during dieting.

Cholecystokinin is a very complex hormone, made up of over 100 amino acids, that is secreted by the intestines during digestion. This hormone was first discovered in 2002.

Insulin’s main role is to cause sugar and fatty acid uptake by cells that use them for energy or store them. Liver cells store sugar as glycogen, fat cells store sugar and fatty acids in the form of triglycerides and muscle cells use sugar (white muscle cells use sugar and store glycogen) and fatty acids (red muscle cells use them during endurance efforts – Pasteur effect). Insulin is glucagon’s counterpart and is also secreted by the pancreas.

Nervous Signals

Most of the nervous signals that lead to hunger are actually caused by hormones, except those sent through the vagus nerve.

The vagus nerve directly links the stomach to the brain and sends complex signals of varying frequency. This leads to varying degrees of hunger or satisfaction, depending both on quantity and quality. It detects the types of food present in the stomach and reacts differently to each food group. The strongest satiety effect is caused by protein.

Psychology

We saw in a previous article on nicotine addiction just how powerful the brain’s reward cycle could be in determining behavior. What is true for nicotine can also be true for food.

Comfort food triggers this reward cycle if it is taken as a result of stressful events. The more this happen, the more reward cycles occur and therefore the more comfort food will be associated with stress relief. It can become a psychological addicition that leads to a physiological addiction to sugar and ultimately cause insulin resistance (a very common problem) and type II diabetes (also a very common problem).

This effect is called positive reinforcement in psychology. Another psychological mechanism called punishment has the opposite effect (food isn’t associated with pleasure, but with pain). This can become a disorder that can potentially lead to anorexia: eating is associated with a painfully negative (and often unreasonably exagerated) self- image . The anorexic thinks she (usually a woman) is too fat while she may in fact be just skin and bones. Eating becomes painful.

Benefits of Understanding

Understanding hunger allows you to follow a dieting plan that takes it into account.

Hunger caused by low glycogen storage and decreasing leptin secretion is kept in check with cheat day (restoring leptin secretion also keeps metabolism running).

Hunger caused by sugar lows is considerably reduced by emphasizing the use of low GI foods (stabilizing both sugar highs and sugar lows).

Hunger caused by the vagus nerve is reduced by ensuring proper protein intake (without going overboard – protein digestion causes high levels of toxicity) as well as fiber intake (insoluble fiber especially cause food to stay in the stomach longer).

Hunger caused by stress and other psychological factors can be identified as such and lead you to focus on relaxing. Note that stress also causes cortisol spikes which are known to cause belly fat storage.

Identifying the cause of your hunger should help you deal with it better and ultimately lower your consumption of comfort foods. Many of these factors are taken into account in the free weight loss plan (which of course should only be undertaken under proper medical supervision).

Passion should not be mistaken for fun, or “doing what you love”. It is an entirely different concept that is well worth looking into. I think this common misconception may be the reason so few find their passion, and therefore even fewer still live them.

Let’s start with the definition, and the etymology of the word passion :

Etymology: being acted upon, from Latin pati, to suffer. It has since evolved to objects of desire or deep interest, but continues to suggest ungovernability (being a slave to one’s passions).

Ancient meaning of words can teach us a lot. In this case it reminds us that passion has the upper hand. When it gets a hold, it controls us. And it isn’t always kind. Fun has little to do with it. Pain and abnegation do.

Of course there is more to it than that. If passion was just suffering, who would want it?

Passion is kindled by results.

Passion develops when progress is made. The first time you practice an activity with flow, or an unusual ease, grace and precision that you can’t explain, you might just have found a passion in the making. Before this first epiphany, you are learning the ropes, and there is little pleasure in that. The period of time it takes to experience it is when it is most likely that you will quit. That may be because that activity isn’t suited for you, or that you haven’t given it enough time.

That first epiphany may motivate you enough to continue searching, longing for another. You learn and practice more. Interest becomes passion. Gradually. Sometimes slowly.

Passionate writers sweat blood from their foreheads. They don’t want to sit down and write, but with experience, and the first experiences of flow, feel compelled to do so.

Passionate athletes (not necessarily professional) endure pain and injury. They don’t feel like training daily, or taking a train to show up at a competition.

Passion is Motivated by Purpose.

Passion may be for harmony, or beauty, or teaching, or being of service… Since it is driven by purpose, it has little to do with the type of activity, or the tools you use to accomplish it. Passionate musicians therefore often play more than one instrument. Passionate teachers have a teaching position, but also write books and essays, as well as conduct research, run a website and hold seminars. Passionate artists driven by a quest for beauty aren’t just painters, but sometimes also sculptors. Passion for service is achieved by some through volontary work, while others will prefer business with a focus on employment and better working conditions.

Some choose just one means of achieving their passion’s purpose, but could very well have chosen another.

The passion’s purpose is rarely conscious. It sometimes reveals itself with time. It may help to try to analyze why you are passionate about something, or just add to the confusion…

One Passion, or Several?

Passion being about purpose much more than it is about a specific activity, there are oftentimes more ways than one to fulfill them. Many passionate musicians master several musical instruments. Many industry leaders develop trades in different markets.

And when you hit a roadblock with one, the answer can simply be to switch to another, and leave yourself time to work out the solution for the first. As long as you don’t stray too far (forget all about it) you may find that the answer is there just waiting for you when you come back to it.

This past article explores the subconscious resolution of problems.

You may also simply have found an original way to deal with it while exercising the other one.

<img class=" " title="Game Development - Source file Peregrines Song" src="http://www.2-0.biz/images/sns-sourceview.jpg" alt="Peregrines Song - 118 scripts, 372 image files, 13 MB. Many sleepless nights (with work the next day).

Why the heck did I spend nights creating this? I still have no idea. I just had to. But the hours of flow came at the cost of more hours still of gritted frustration.

Why 20 years of karate? For the few times that felt like flying, and despite injury and suffocation.

Why this blog? Or the others? Same answer.

Maybe I’ll see it all come to a logical conclusion someday.

Ask Nico Di Mattia why the painting…

Or any engaged actor, politician, artist, humanitarian, or even a person that lives a seemingly normal job with passion and they may or may not be really able to explain why. But they will almost always tell you it isn’t all fun and games. Especially in the early, learning stages.

Finding Your Passion is Selfish… And Selfless.

Passion attracts your focus in such a way that it distracts you, or sometimes totally takes your attention away from anything else. Namely others. Family, friends, duties of all sorts become secondary at best. In this sense living your passion is a selfish act. It can keep you away from home, make you inefficient at work (given your work and passion are not one and the same).

Yet passion aims at a greater good. It could care less about marketing and sales. It is driven by a purpose, and that purpose isn’t about your interests (but it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are incompatible).

Passion requires specific abilities, strengths, instinct and talent.

Not everyone can develop a passion for music. It requires an ear and sensitivity. It requires physical attributes (hand morphology is crucial to play the piano or the violin). You do not choose your passion. You find it, and to find it, you need to experience that first epiphany. It isn’t going to happen if you have no talent for the discipline in question, so that practice does not lead to a passion. If you find yourself completely unable to make progress, then you’ve probably taken the wrong road.

Instinct can give indications of which activity to choose. Your instincts. Not someone else’s. If you sense early on that with practice you can achieve a “eureka” moment then you are on the right track. If not you may not have tried enough, or you may have tried something that isn’t for you.

Passion doesn’t provide energy, it requires it. Lots of it.

Passion will drain you of your energy. It will keep you up at night. It will have your mind reeling in search of ways to accomplish itself. That may lead you to believe that it energizes you. But it does not provide that energy. Passion takes control of you, and forces you to feed it.

That energy needs to be there in the first place. Strength helps.

Passion wears you out, and when comes the time when you have no energy left to give it, you may think you’ve simply lost interest or decide to take a break. If that break becomes permanent, it may be that you’ve given up before achieving your passion’s purpose.

After recovery you may be reluctant to relive the same experience that you mistook for a mistake or a failure and try a new one. You find another that sparks interest and decide to test this one to see if it carries you longer. It may be a different way to achieve the same purpose. And it will only carry you longer if it is also a passion, if you have completely recovered from the previous, and have more energy to give it.

But it may also be that you have achieved your passion’s purpose, and that that purpose was only the first step towards achieving a larger one. You may have learned something essential from that experience that you will need to take the next step.

Passion Requires Problem Solving, Conscious or Not.

You may hit a roadblock. You cannot figure out how to make further progress. And the harder you try, the more steps you take… backwards. So you may quit, and with time forget. Perhaps you should have just taken a break, put the problem in the back of your head but be prepared to come back to it, letting your subconscious figure it out. Because it does that. My past article on productivity block goes into more detail on this point.

Losing interest in an activity doesn’t necessarily mean that activity was a mistake. Sometimes quiting is a mistake because burnout is mistaken for loss of interest. One of the aspects of The Concert that makes it a compelling film is that it shows that a passion may be set aside for thirty years, and still be there waiting for you.

But quiting isn’t necessarily a mistake. The purpose may be accomplished so that a new, larger one may be undertaken. Or the choice may simply have been a poor one.

Life isn’t simple after all.

Passion is scary.

You instinctively know a passion will take you for a rough ride. This is why finding your passion is not about “trying new things”, but going for things that both attract you and take you out of your comfort zone until sufficient progress has been made.

Passion isn’t necessarily about time spent on an activity either.

Many think they have a passion for video games or movies. Sometimes they do, when those games and films have a purpose. It may lead them to creating their own, or practice leadership by creating and managing MMORPG guilds, or develop the sensitivity they will need to learn to act, or other purposes still. But for many others those passtimes are in fact addictions that allow them to escape reality.

None can judge from the outside.

Passion is Insane.

At least it looks that way from the average spectator’s eye. It lacks conventional wisdom. That spectator will wonder how the passionate can have so little regard for their own well-being and sometimes mistake it for laziness, immaturity or lack of drive.

When will those darned passionate people finally have the sense to make something of themselves?

Those that go far enough do, when they’ve started truly accomplishing that passion’s purpose: when the harmony, beauty, or service is there, or within reach.

Passion is an Act of Faith.

How can it be otherwise when passion takes your energy and focus and has no regards for your well-being? Everything about passion suggests failure, bankruptcy, loneliness and hardships of all shapes and sizes. Yet those that find their passion and give it the energy it requires seem to have a knack for falling on their feet. Failure befalls those that hesitate, backtrack and let doubt take over. Those that succeed go all out, for as long as it takes.

People living their passion disregard their fear and stay the course, however unreasonable it may seem. And they don’t even know why. They have faith in the vision that only becomes clearer as they slowly reach its purpose. At first they have faith in there even being a vision because they are yet to see it. This is why they will always fail, in the early stages, to clearly explain what they are doing, and why.

They learn to believe that there is nothing to fear, because by abiding to their passion they are living in correlation with their purpose. They believe in a world order that depends on their finding their place and playing their part. They believe that ignoring their calling harms that world order, and that it will somehow preserve them if they stay the course. They believe that the challenges they are facing were meant for them to be overcome, and aren’t beyond their ability. They believe that they are not truly alone. They believe that what they are risking has little value compared to what they will gain.

Passion is Recommended.

For all the struggle, hardship, fear, doubt, devoted time and effort, those that find and live their passion(s) wouldn’t have it any other way.

Insulin resistance makes life harder.

This may very well be one of the most important articles you ever read. Seriously. Many commercial “sales pages” start this way so note that this isn’t one.

Insulin resistance deprives you of your energy. It sets you up for diabetes and cardio-vascular disease. It prevents weight loss (fighting it is one of the cornerstones of my free weight loss plan), no matter how hard you try. It causes depression. It ruins careers and relationships. It makes lives more difficult and less enjoyable. It sometimes ruins them.

It affects a very large percentage of the world population.

Insulin resistance is the enemy. One of the worst 21st century ailments, and practically no one ever talks about it, because it isn’t deadly. Not directly anyway. Yet 8% of the US population has diabetes (90% of which is type II). All type II diabetes patients developped insulin resistance prior to diabetes setting in. Quietly, unknowingly.

Diabetes has been officially declared an epidemic at the turn of the century. Insulin resistance is a pre-diabetic condition. It becomes type II diabetes later down the road. Estimates from 2004 tell that 25% of the population has mild to severe insulin resistance. It has only been getting worse, so the figures may now be much more alarming.

Yet insulin resistance isn’t a fatality. It is rather easy to reverse, given people affected by it know what it is, how they got it, what it is doing to them and how to get rid of it.

Disclaimer: This article is for informational purposes only. I am not a doctor, and am not qualified to either diagnose or prescribe treatment. This article is meant to be used in collaboration with a qualified physician. No guarantees are made as to the results you should expect from applying its contents.

That being said, insulin resistance is characterized by high sugar, triglyceride and fatty acid content in the blood. It can be diagnosed easily with a simple blood test.

Insulin resistance will often cause weight gain, because it prevents sugar and fatty acids from being transported to cells that need them for energy. Instead of being used, they stagnate in the blood and ultimately end up being stored. Without insulin resistance, people that are affected would have more energy, would be likely to use it, and not store it. This energy could be used for better family, social and / or career life, but it isn’t so these improvements aren’t made.

People with this condition do not necessarily put on weight. Some people never get fat, and for entirely different reasons. If you read that (short) article, you understand that people that never put on weight may actually be more at risk. Not being overweight isn’t reason enough to conclude that there is no resistance to insulin.

Insulin resistance causes digestive drowsiness, especially if meals have a high carbohydrate content. An uncontrollable urge to sleep after lunch is a rather reliable symptom of advanced stages of insulin resistance.

Causes of Insulin Resistance.

Insulin resistance, like the name suggests, is a developped immunity to the effects of insulin at the cellular level. The pancreas has, for too long, produced too much insulin. The cells have in turn gradually stopped responding. The role of insulin is to cause sugar and fatty acid uptake by cells that need to replenish glycogen and energy supply, liver cells that metabolize or store them (glycogen) and fat cells that store fat and sugar that isn’t immediately required. Insulin resistance causes these excesses to stagnate in the blood, affecting arteries and ultimately causing cardio-vascular incidents and other complications.

The pancreas releases high amounts of insulin when sugar content in the blood spikes. The large amounts of insulin causes that excess sugar to be stored quickly if the fat and liver cells are healthy. This causes a sugar low. The sugar low causes a craving for more sugar, which leads to the next spike in sugar content.

As this cycle repeats itself, an addiction to sugar sets in and the pancreas grows more efficient. More sugar intake is caused by the addicition. More sugar and a stronger pancreas cause insulin spikes to reach much higher levels . A vicious cycle that causes cells to start to develop immunity.

Worsening factors.

Sugar intake and pancreatic response may or may not be enough on their own, but there are worsening factors.

Weight gain.

With weight gain, fat gets stored in the muscles and around vital organs. Intra-muscular fat storage mechanically impedes sugar and fatty acid uptake, duplicating the effects of insulin resistance.

Trans fats and low density lipoproteins (LDL, or “bad cholesterol”) are more likely to penetrate such confined storage places (as well as vascular walls).

Too much fructose.

Fructose directly causes the creation of LDL when it is catabolized by the liver (hepatic cells are the only cells in the body that can process fructose). Too much fructose in our diet is another worsening factor.

This article and video go into the details of the effects of fructose. Note that excess fructose in our diet isn’t caused by fruit. We actually don’t have enough of those, but fructose is used as a substitute for sugar in virtually all industrially processed foods.

When sugar is absorbed in the blood too fast.

This is due to the nature of the sugars in our diet, or more precisely their glycemic and insulinic indexes. This article goes into the details of good vs bad carbohydrates, and it is mostly based on those two measurements:

Glycemic index: How fast the sugar is digested and absorbed in the blood stream.
Insulinic index: How responsive the pancreas is to that sugar when it is detected.

If the sugars in our diet have a low glycemic index and insulinic index, the previously described insulin spike / insulin low cycles that lead to addiction to sugar, then insulin resistance and ultimately diabetes and other complications never happen. Switching to them is probably the best prevention for children and young adults that aren’t affected yet.

How to reverse Insulin Resistance.

The following measures are, as stated above, listed for informational purposes only. All undertakings aimed at improving your health must be carried out under proper medical supervision.

Slow carbs.

Switching to “slow” carbs is one of the required measures to successfully reverse insulin resistance. It does so by first preventing the insulin spikes that make it worse. With time, cellular immunity to insulin should wear off.

The free weight loss plan lists the foods I used myself, and the Montignac GI tables will help you determine acceptable foods for yourself. Use the search box to test foods you are considering, or the <35 GI table (green) to find foods that can fit into a slow carb diet.

As stated there, dairy products have a low GI but the insulinic index of lactose is extremely high. Milk is not an acceptable source of slow carbohydrates.

Remember however that insulin resistance isn’t only about weight loss. Even if body shape is of little concern to you, there are still very good reasons to look into it.

Omega-3 fatty acids.

Omega-3 fatty acids are required to build healthy cellular walls. When a resistant cell reaches the end of its life cycle, it can be replaced by a healthier, non-resistant cell.

They can be found in flaxseed oil (also called rapeseed, canola and colza), krill oil, wild salmon and mackerel.

Micronutrients.

Magnesium plays an essential part in lipolysis (more on that in a future article) and has been said to have beneficial effects on insulin resistance. Magnesium defficiency is common, so bear this in mind when discussing with your physician.

Chromium and vitamin D are also said to have beneficial effects, but I have found no explanation as to why.

Reduce fructose intake.

Only get fructose from fruit. Read labels, and stay away from anything that says fructose syrup (or sucrose, which is 1/2 glucose and 1/2 fructose).

Exercise.

Exercise causes your body to create more glycolytic receptors. Those are cellular structures that enable sugar intake so as to replenish glycogen supply (essential for type II muscle cells especially). This has a direct impact on insulin resistance.

Exercise can be divided into two broad categories. It will either be an endurance effort or a speed/strength effort. Endurance relies on type I (red, or slow-twitch) muscle cells and it is mainly powered by the Pasteur Effect, which burns fat. Speed and strength rely on type II (white, or fast-twitch) muscle cells and it is entirely powered by glycolysis, which requires sugar and more calories.

My previous article on muscle type and exercise goes into more detail.

The Most Important…

Don’t forget: the first and foremost step to take to reverse insulin resistance is to elaborate a strategy in collaboration with a qualified physician. This article is meant to enable you to participate, not auto-medicate.

Whatever you do, do something. If it has been years since your last blood test, start there. If you struggle staying awake after lunch, can’t seem to lose weight, or never gain weight no matter what some investigation is required. Get your energy back.

“How to Make a Few Hundred Dollars a Month Online… Starting Today!” is a short guide that describes a very cool method that gets you past the “complete newbie status” that can actually last for years (many never make it beyond that point at all) by:

1. Advertising to a population that is much more engaged in their online search for information, tools, products. This greatly increases conversion.

2. Avoiding the competition. This greatly reduces advertising costs.

3. Triggering impulse buying. This further increases conversion.

And you can get it for free!

Starting a business requires a lot of time and hard work before the first results start showing. And for many, they never do. If you open a bar, it will take at least six months to just break even. If you start a blog with the intent of monetizing it, or affiliate websites, or shareware products, you will rely on search engine rankings and relationships that take a great deal of time and energy to develop.

Making your first few hundred dollars a month starting today can help you dramatically speed things up by providing an advertising budget, an outsourcing budget, freeing up time to work on development, or just have some relaxing fun on week-ends.

It requires some analytical skills and method, so I cannot guarantee it will work for you. I cannot know for sure that you have these skills. But I do guarantee that you will discover some very cool things that I am 99.9% sure you’ve never seen before.

I set up a system that automatically sends you an email with a link to the download page as soon as you purchase one of my recommended products (isn’t that the coolest thing?? ) That way you get to choose the product you like best, enjoy all its benefits (all the products I recommend are absolutely awesome!) and you learn techniques that can consistently make you a few hundred dollars a month.

Note that this technique does not require much time. Like any method, with a little practice, it can be set up very quickly.

Remember that there are 3 important pillars: High interest, low competition and triggering an impulse purchase. If just one is missing it won’t work nearly as well.
