After early skepticism, Leah was introduced to free market ideas after experiencing expensive environmental requirements and state regulations, which frustrated her group’s business venture in Oklahoma’s struggling economy. Advancing economic development in Kingston, Jamaica, opened her eyes to the free market system even further. There, she observed how centralized government policies impaired prosperity and drove entrepreneurs to the black market. This experience and reading Statecraft by Margaret Thatcher confirmed for Leah that free markets are the best way to bring prosperity to people. Soon after, she began pursuing a master’s degree in public policy at Duquesne University.

During the 2006-07 Koch Associate Program, Leah continued her research career at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University. She knows that, for non-profits, accountability to and measurement of a mission are difficult. “At Mercatus,” she recounts, “we have worked to design measurement systems to assess how well our programs achieve our mission toward social change.”

According to Leah, the Koch Associate Program enabled her to learn more about the philosophy of markets, thus challenging her to define her own political philosophy. She credits the program with sharpening her political and economic beliefs, as well as her ability to articulate them effectively.

Leah’s most recent projects include co-founding a non-profit measurement roundtable and writing a chapter for their measurement handbook.
