The GayCharlotte Film Festival may show fewer than a dozen films, but it covers a remarkable amount of ground: not only multiple aspects of life in the LGBT community but films geared to women, people of color and multiple ages.

The Charlotte City Council voted Monday to spend $975,000 to replace the original seats at Bojangles’ Coliseum, the 1955 building that has hosted Elvis, The Rolling Stones and ACC basketball tournaments.

The Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority, which manages the building, said it’s trying to find a way to make some of the 9,700 old seats available to the public.

A young George Washington Valenzuela was walking to a barbershop in small, dusty Marfa, Texas, when a woman approached him and asked if he would like to be in a movie. He said yes.

Weeks later, Valenzuela found himself singing the national anthem in front of Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor in the 1956 blockbuster movie "Giant."

A new documentary seeks to tell Valenzuela's story and that of other Mexican-American child actors who appeared in the film but later could only view it in segregated theaters.
