Deal: $20 for a haircut, blow-dry and styling at Cirrus Salon

Grade: A

For the past 2.5 years, I’ve only gotten my hair cut at either SuperCuts or HairCuttery in DC — I usually keep it very low maintenance and just get my hair cut straight across, let it grow out and then chop it off. Over Christmas, my mom suggested (as only family members can suggest) that I try out a new hairstyle…and get a haircut that costs more than $17.95. Soon after this suggestion, I found out I was moving to Charlotte, and added getting a haircut to my list of things to do during my “settling in week”. During my last week in DC, I found Cirrus on Groupon and decided that this would be the Salon for my “new style”…especially given the fact that I could spend the same amount of money that I did at SuperCuts or HairCuttery, but get a much better quality cut.

Yesterday, I booked an appointment with Josh at Cirrus Salon in Charlotte. I must admit that I was a little nervous beforehand, not because I was going to a new salon, but because I was going to be trying a new hairstyle — my plan was to chop my hair a little above the shoulders and layer it — but what if I didn’t explain it right and came out with a terrible hairstyle?!

Josh sat me down, discussed what he thought would work best given my not-so-great description of what I wanted. Throughout the whole haircut, I felt like I was in great hands and in the end, I loved my new haircut!

Deal: $7 for $15 worth of food from Owen’s Bagel and Deli

Grade: A

If I could eat bacon, egg and cheese on a bagel every morning, I would. This past year, I became addicted to getting this breakfast on the weekend from a small hole-in-the-wall bagel shop in DC called Bagels, Etc. This might be one of the things I miss most about DC, however, I’m was so excited today to discover the delicious bagels at Owen’s Bagel and Deli in Charlotte.

I ordered Mandy’s Mayhem (Turkey, Swiss, Avocado, & Sprouts on Everything) without the sprouts and Ted ordered the Piedmont (Roast Beef, Smoked Cheddar, Bacon, Lettuce and Tomato on Onion). We ended up splitting both and they were delicious (although I think mine was better). They were served hot so that all the cheese was melted and the bagels were very doughy. Yum!

I loved the atmosphere at Owen’s too. While the restaurant was very kid friendly, it also felt like a college town sandwich shop where people in their early 20s might gather.

I give Owen’s an A — great atmosphere, delicious bagel, and somewhere I will definitely go back. So far my Charlotte Groupons have been 2-for-2…great experiences and I plan on returning to both! Keep up the good work Groupon Charlotte!

My dad and I did a "halfsies" (Splitting his order and mine) - he order a chop salad and tatter tots and I ordered a regular cheeseburger with Onion straws.

Jimminy Christmas this place was tasty. I just got done moving things into a new house in Dilworth and my dad, girlfriend, and I ventured to East Blvd and settled on Big Daddy’s Burger. I had to idea the place was any good, but I figured that since there was a 20 minute wait for a table at 1:30, it must be legit.

My intuition was correct. My dad and I did a “halfsies” (Splitting his order and mine) – he order a chop salad and tatter tots and I ordered a regular cheeseburger with Onion straws. He was trying to be healthy. My girlfriend ordered a regular burger with spicy mustard (how weird is it to order spicy mustard?). I was absolutely shocked at the quality of the burger. It was damn good. It was the best burger I’ve had in 15 years. My dad got the better end of the “halfsies,” but the chopped salad was still very, very tasty. Overall, Big Daddy’s Burger rocked my world and it will be a staple of my Dilworth dining.

To the right is a Meghan Foxx look-alike that I spotted in Big Daddy’s burger washing down her “spicy mustard” cheeseburger with a refreshing Coca-Cola Classic.

It was actually a great post-Christmas walk in Charlotte – but the highlight was a quick stop at Nothing But Noodles. We order the 6 plate dumplings for $4.50. They were delectable and tasted like they were straight from the far east. I could have eaten about 15, but that would have been weird/gross.

I went online after the experience and googled the name. I was semi-shocked to learned that it was a chain. Which, made me slightly angry, but oh well. I will be back to Nothing But Noodles for a full noodle bowl sometime soon.
