Anger management doesn't always work. Just ask 22-year-old Sheelah Thompson, who according to Spartanburg County deputies, was struck by her boyfriend with a rolled up anger management workbook during a fight Monday night at her apartment.

The deputy's report tells an ugly story in which Thompson claims that her boyfriend, 23-year-old Tyler Ford strangled her, threaten to kill her repeatedly, put her phone in the oven to prevent her from calling 911 and "popped" their infant daughter two times on the legs because the child was crying.

The trouble apparently began while the couple was watching a movie. According to deputies, Ford began questioning Thompson as to why she provokes him knowing that he's currently enrolled in anger management class. The reports suggests that Thompson just shrugged, causing Ford to roll up his anger management workbook and strike her on the foot and cheek.

What followed was pretty standard. According to the report, she left the apartment but he called her back in so that neighbors wouldn't call police. When she approached, she allegedly began hitting him. He locked the door for a spell and when he opened it again, she allegedly began hitting him again. He then allegedly hit her. And she allegedly stabbed him with a box-cutter.

Both were arrested. Thompson was charged with criminal domestic violence high and aggravated while Ford was charged with criminal domestic violence second offense.

An anger management workbook can be over 200 pages.

Last year, it was announced that new stealth technology makes airplanes invisible not only to radar, it also renders them hidden to the human eye as well — “just like an invisibility cloak in a Hollywood sci-fi thriller,”

China had just touted its work on a “cloaking” technology using a hexagonal array of glass-like panels to bend light around an object, obscuring it from view, as though hidden by an invisibility cloak. Experts confirmed that the technology was legit — and not unlike American and European projects from the past few years.

“The general public … might not hear about how far the U.S. has really come, because it is and should remain classified,” firearms expert Chris Sajnog, a former Navy SEAL, told FoxNews.com. “Other countries are still playing catch-up — but they’re closing the gap.”

On 8 March 2014, the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777-200ER operating the flight disappeared with 227 passengers of 15 nationalities and 12 crew members on board, following its last contact with air traffic control less than an hour after take-off.

A joint search-and-rescue effort covering an area of 27,000 sq mi (70,000 km2) in the busy Strait of Malacca and the South China Sea is being conducted by more than 12 countries. Vietnam briefly reduced its efforts on 11 March, but the search area continued to expand and searchers began to look for evidence on land. On 12 March, authorities also began to search the Andaman Sea, north of the Strait of Malacca, and the Malaysian government requested help from India to search in the area.

On 11 March, it was reported that military radar indicated the aircraft turned west and continued flying for 70 minutes before disappearing near Pulau Perak; it “changed course after Kota Bharu and took a lower altitude.

Inspite of the intensive international search and rescue mission to find flight MH370 including authorities from 11 countries no one has yet been able to zero-in the exact location of the crash.

The plane just magically disappeared. But invisible doesn’t imply inaudible.

On 11th March eight villagers from Marang lodged police reports claiming that they had heard a loud noise last Saturday coming from the direction of Pulau Kapas and believed it was linked to the disappearance of a Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight on that day.

All of them, from Kampung Pantai Seberang Marang, made the reports at the Marang district police headquarters at about 10.30am. One of them, Alias Salleh, 36, said he and seven fellow villagers were seated on a bench about 400 metres from the Marang beach at 1.20am when they heard the noise, which sounded like the fan of a jet engine.

“The loud and frightening noise came from the north-east of Pulau Kapas and we ran in that direction to find out the cause. We looked around the Rhu Muda beach, but did not see anything unusual,” said the lorry driver.

Replying to a question, Alias said they lodged the police report so that it would be of help to the authorities who were trying to locate the missing MAS aircraft.

Another villager, Mohd Yusri Mohd Yusof, 34, said when he heard the strange noise, he thought a tsunami was about to strike.

“My friends and I heard the ringing noise for about two minutes. I decided to lodge the police report after seeing the media reports on the lost flight,” he said. – Bernama

On March 12 the Terengganu police confirmed having received a report on a loud explosion heard by local villagers in Marang last Saturday morning, the day the Beijing-bound Malaysia Airlines (MAS) MH370 went missing.

How can an entire Boeing 777-200ER vanish from military radars of several countries and become invisible to people – who can hear the noise of fans of it’s jet engines but cannot see it ?

Imagine a Boeing hovering over your head but you can’t see the damn thing !!!

A U.S. intelligence assessment, described to The Daily Beast by current and former U.S. intelligence officials, concluded that any Israeli attack on hardened nuclear sites in Iran would go far beyond airstrikes from F-15 and F-16 fighter planes and likely include electronic warfare against Iran’s electric grid, Internet, cellphone network, and emergency frequencies for firemen and police officers.

For example, Israel has developed a weapon capable of mimicking a maintenance cellphone signal that commands a cell network to “sleep,” effectively stopping transmissions, officials confirmed. The Israelis also have jammers capable of creating interference within Iran’s emergency frequencies for first responders.

In a 2007 attack on a suspected nuclear site at al-Kibar, the Syrian military got a taste of this warfare when Israeli planes “spoofed” the country’s air-defense radars, at first making it appear that no jets were in the sky and then in an instant making the radar believe the sky was filled with hundreds of planes.

“Puzzled” Over Malaysia Airlines “Capture” By US Navy

A new report circulating in the Kremlin today prepared by the Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces (GRU) states that Aerospace Defence Forces (VKO) experts remain “puzzled” as to why the United States Navy “captured and then diverted” a Malaysia Airlines civilian aircraft from its intended flight-path to their vast and highly-secretive Indian Ocean base located on the Diego Garcia atoll.

According to this report, Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 (also marketed as China Southern Airlines flight 748 through a codeshare) was a scheduled passenger flight from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Beijing, China, when on 8 March this Boeing 777-200ER aircraft “disappeared” in flight with 227 passengers on board from 15 countries, most of whom were Chinese, and 12 crew members.

Interesting to note, this report says, was that Flight 370 was already under GRU “surveillance” after it received a “highly suspicious” cargo load that had been traced to the Indian Ocean nation Republic of Seychelles, and where it had previously been aboard the US-flagged container ship MV Maersk Alabama.

What first aroused GRU suspicions regarding the MV Maersk Alabama, this report continues, was that within 24-hours of off-loading this “highly suspicious” cargo load bound for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, the two highly-trained US Navy Seals assigned to protect it, Mark Daniel Kennedy, 43, and Jeffrey Keith Reynolds, 44, were found dead under “suspicious circumstances.”

Both Kennedy and Reynolds, this report says, were employed by the Virginia Beach, Virginia-based maritime security firm The Trident Group which was founded by US Navy Special Operations Personnel (SEAL’s) and Senior US Naval Surface Warfare Officers and has long been known by the GRU to protect vital transfers of both atomic and biological materials throughout the world.

Upon GRU “assests” confirming that this “highly suspicious” cargo was aboard Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 on 8 March, this report notes, Moscow notified China’s Ministry of State Security (MSS) of their concerns and received “assurances” that “all measures” would be taken as to ascertain what was being kept so hidden when this aircraft entered into their airspace.

However, this report says, and as yet for still unknown reasons, the MSS was preparing to divert Flight 370 from its scheduled destination of Beijing to Haikou Meilan International Airport (HAK) located in Hainan Province (aka Hainan Island).

Prior to entering the People Liberation Army (PLA) protected zones of the South China Sea known as the Spratly Islands, this report continues, Flight 370 “significantly deviated” from its flight course and was tracked by VKO satellites and radar flying into the Indian Ocean region and completing its nearly 3,447 kilometer (2,142 miles) flight to Diego Garcia.

Critical to note about Flight 370’s flight deviation, GRU experts in this report say, was that it occurred during the same time period that all of the Spratly Island mobile phone communications operated by China Mobile were being jammed.

China Mobile, it should be noted, extended phone coverage in the Spratly Islands in 2011 so that PLA soldiers stationed on the islands, fishermen, and merchant vessels within the area would be able to use mobile services, and can also provide assistance during storms and sea rescues.

As to how the US Navy was able to divert Flight 370 to its Diego Garcia base, this report says, appears to have been accomplished remotely as this Boeing 777-200ER aircraft is equipped with a fly-by-wire (FBW) system that replaces the conventional manual flight controls of an aircraft with an electronic interface allowing it to be controlled like any drone-type aircraft.

However, this report notes, though this aircraft can be controlled remotely, the same cannot be said of its communication systems which can only be shut down manually; and in the case of Flight 370, its data reporting system was shut down at 1:07 a.m., followed by its transponder (which transmits location and altitude) which was shut down at 1:21 a.m.

What remains “perplexing” about this incident, GRU analysts in this report say, are why the American mainstream media outlets have yet to demand from the Obama regime the radar plots and satellite images of the Indian Ocean and South China Sea regions as the US military covers this entire area from Diego Garcia like no other seas in the world due to its vital shipping and air lanes.

Most sadly, this report concludes, the US is actually able to conceal the reason(s) for the “disappearance” of Flight 370 as they have already done so after the events of 11 September 2001 when the then Bush regime “disappeared” American Airlines Flight 77 and its 64 passengers and crew after falsely claiming it hit the Pentagon, but which was confirmed by the CNN News Service [see video HERE] not to have happened.

Chris Horner, 41 Wins La Vuelta "Tour de Spain"

Virtually no Americans watched the Tour of Spain, a three-week cycling race that ended Sunday in Madrid. http://www.lavuelta.com/ official race site

It’s a shame, not only was the racing some of the most memorable in a grand tour that I can recall, but because of the race’s remarkable American winner, Chris Horner.

He turns 42 years old next month. After Armstrong was stripped of his Tour de France titles, Horner is the first American grand tour winner since Greg LeMond.

Prior to Horner’s stunning victory, the oldest grand tour winner was Belgian Firmin Lambot, who was 36 when he won the 1922 Tour de France.

Horner is nearly six years older, and won arguably the most demanding grand tour in recent memory. Moreover, average age of pro cyclists at the highest level of the sport is 28. Grand tour cyclists hit their peak, usually, between 27 and 33 years of age.

In winning the tour, Horner climbed better than Vincenzo Nibali, a 28-year-old climber who was probably the best overall rider in the race who earlier this year won the Tour of Italy. Here’s video of the winning move Horner made on the diabolical final climb of Stage 20.

So how did Chris Horner, who had never previously finished in the top five of a grand tour, do it?

Like every cyclist of this era, he has faced serious questions about doping, the using a performance enhancing drugs. This is only natural following the Lance Armstrong era, especially for a rider who rides on the team Armstrong formed during his comeback.

Full disclosure: I’d love for Horner to be clean. He seems like a genuinely good guy, and he’s had a lot of bad luck in his career before finally finding some success. The cynic in me is doubtful, however, especially as it remains possible to dope one’s blood in cycling despite it possessing the most sophisticated drug testing policy in any sport.

What I’m not sure of is how significant a decline there is physically, in an endurance athlete, between the age of 30 and 40. So I rang up Dr. Theodore Shybut, a sports medicine expert at the Baylor College of Medicine.

Both an athlete’s endurance and power output fall off by the late 30s, Shybut said.

With regard to endurance, the fall-off generally begins in the mid-30s. At this time a person’s ability to sustain a high level of activity — say running fast, but not sprinting — without burning up all of one’s energy begins to diminish. This is known as the anaerobic threshold. By the mid-30s this threshold tends to lower a bit in a typical athlete, Shybut said. This means Horner, at the same energy expenditure has he used five to seven years ago, would be going slower to today.

“This is one reason why, in general, we don’t see a lot of Olympic athletes in strength and endurance events in their late 30s and 40s,” Shybut said.

Another critical factor is that athletes lose some of their ability to recover after hard efforts by their mid- to late-30s. A grand tour encompasses 21 stages of racing with just two rest days during the event. Day-to-day recovery is essential.

With power output the drop-off typically comes even earlier. For cyclists, a critical ability is their maximum capacity to transport and use oxygen, or their VO2 max.

“This does tend to decrease as well, in general for peak performance in power sports like sprinting, that peak comes in the late 20s,” Shybut said.

So for a cyclist like Horner, who puts out a maximum effort for 15 to 20 minutes on a very hard climb, his peak power would probably have come in his late 20s.

All of this looks pretty bad for Horner. However, Shybut noted, there are a handful of older athletes who have achieved peak status late in life. Notably U.S. swimmer Dara Torres, at the age of 41, won three silver medals at the 2008 Olympics and set an American record in the 50-meter freestyle.

It is theoretically possible that some athletes could maintain or even reach their physiological peak in their late 30s, Shybut said. The only way to definitively prove this would be to perform exercise and blood tests in ones 20s, 30s and 40s, and measure the changes. Unfortunately this information isn’t available for Horner as it could, in some way, exonerate him from doping allegations were he able to show improvement these physiological metrics.

Horner, in other words, might have great genes. But the genetics of endurance sports is not to the point yet where we know the genetic markers for 40-year-old super athletes. So a DNA test can’t validate Horner either, at least not yet.

Regardless, as someone who recently turned 40, I tip my cap at a fellow 40-something taking it to the kids, many of whom were also quite probably doping to some extent.

She crashed on her bike during the race, with a possible broken hip, cuts on her leg, hip, elbow on the right side, and cutting hand and fingers on the left. She gutted out the heat and humidity of Galveston and finished the Run strong in 2 hr and 10 min for a finishing time of 5:59.

I am attaching picture of her post race, swollen hip, bandaged bloody leg, bandaged hand and elbow, but offering a HUGE SMILE.

To me she epitomizes the spirit of Ironman, when the chips are down, your body hurts beyond belief, sure its easier to quit and say "i crashed and couldn't finish", but the spirit of IRONMAN shined through and she persevered to the finish.

I am certain she left Galveston with a GREAT Sense of PRIDE.

Syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer on Tuesday said the White House used David Petraeus’s affair to get the CIA director to give testimony about the attacks on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that was in line with the administration’s position on the matter.

Appearing on Fox News's Special Report, Krauthammer said, "The sword was lowered on Election Day" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER: I think the really shocking news today was that General Petraeus thought and hoped he could keep his job. He thought that it might and it would be kept secret, and that he could stay in his position. I think what that tells us is really important. It meant that he understood that the FBI obviously knew what was going on. He was hoping that those administration officials would not disclose what had happened, and therefore hoping that he would keep his job. And that meant that he understood that his job, his reputation, his legacy, his whole celebrated life was in the hands of the administration, and he expected they would protect him by keeping it quiet.

And that brings us to the ultimate issue, and that is his testimony on September 13. That’s the thing that connects the two scandals, and that’s the only thing that makes the sex scandal relevant. Otherwise it would be an exercise in sensationalism and voyeurism and nothing else. The reason it’s important is here’s a man who knows the administration holds his fate in its hands, and he gives testimony completely at variance with what the Secretary of Defense had said the day before, at variance with what he’d heard from his station chief in Tripoli, and with everything that we had heard. Was he influenced by the fact that he knew his fate was held by people within the administration at that time?

As a point of reference, ABCNews.com reported on September 14:

The attack that killed four Americans in the Libyan consulate began as a spontaneous protest against the film “The Innocence of Muslims,” but Islamic militants who may have links to Al Qaeda used the opportunity to launch an attack, CIA Director David Petreaus told the House Intelligence Committee today according to one lawmaker who attended a closed-door briefing.

This of course was the administration line for almost two weeks after the attacks.

With that in mind, Krauthammer drove his point home further a few minutes later:

KRAUTHAMMER: Of course it was being held over Petraeus’s head, and the sword was lowered on Election Day. You don’t have to be a cynic to see that as the ultimate in cynicism. As long as they needed him to give the administration line to quote Bill, everybody was silent. And as soon as the election’s over, as soon as he can be dispensed with, the sword drops and he’s destroyed. I mean, can you imagine what it’s like to be on that pressure and to think it didn’t distort or at least in some way unconsciously influence his testimony? That’s hard to believe.

If Krauthammer is correct, it's going to be very interesting to see if and how the Obama-loving media reports it.

Khawam claimed in a July 12 letter to her estranged husband that she took their son "on vacation last year to Martha Vineyard," where their son and "I had a great time at the DSCC [Democratic Senate Campaign Committee] event."

"Sen. John Kerry asked if [her son] would be coming again this year," Khawam wrote. "[Their son] was a superstar at the DSCC last year."

A spokeswoman for Kerry – who the Washington Post reports is being considered as President Obama's next secretary of defense -- had no immediate comment.

Also filed in that court case by Khawam is a letter, on United States Senate stationary, from Whitehouse, who like Kerry is a Democrat.

That letter was written to Gerald "Gerry" Harrington, who has been a fundraiser for Kerry and other Democrats out of Rhode Island. Harrington, according to Khawam's federal bankruptcy filing earlier this year in Florida, gave her a personal loan of $300,000.

"Derry Gerry," Whitehouse wrote. "I am excited to hear that you and [Khawam's son] may be coming to the Family Clambake. That would be terrific! All the best wishes, Sheldon."

A related email from Khawam to her estranged husband -- from whom she was seeking permission to take their son to Whitehouse's clambake -- said that their son "knows Sen. Whitehouse and his family from spending time together with them last summer in Newport, R.I.

2012 Post Election Numbers and Thoughts

A Math Guys Post Election Summary 2012

Its over, the other side WON, and I must Congratulate them for a hard fought victory. Yes, as I was driving to swim practice, I saw the Sun Coming up Wed. Morning.

I am kind of a numbers guy as well and living in Texas was very curious to see how the "polsters" came up with their numerology.

Everyone is tossing around this "white Voters" percentage as being 72%, but I went to Census figures and looked at population as whole from the Census. I think this 72% is inflated and the real number is closer to 64%.

Total Pop 308 Million USA as of 2010, per Census...

White 197 Million, or 64%

Hisp/Latin 50 Million or 16 %

Black 39 Million or 13 %

Asian 14 Million or 5%

Other 6 Million or 2%

Interesting Note from Census numbers, Hispanic population from 2000 to 2010 increased by 50%, thats right 5-0 % their numbers are really growing, and White population growth for same period was 1.2%, not sustainable whites are dying faster than reproducing.

Cross Reference these numbers with % voting for Obama/Romney and some interesting trends come up.

Obama received about 52.4 % of the Total Vote.

White voters Obama (39%) of (64%) or Total % of Election 25%

Black Voters Obama (98%) of (13%) or Total % of Election 12.7%

Lat/Hisp/Asia Obama ( 64%) of (23%) or Total % of Election 14.7%

Doing math (14.7%/23%= 63.9%) says Obama got 64% of Hispanic/Other /Asian vote

Adds up to 25% + 12.7% + 14.7% = 52.4 % of Population voted Obama for President.

I have run the numbers and for Romney to win last Tuesday, He would have needed 51% of Combined Hispanics, Asian and Other...Multi racial categories voters to win.

He missed the mark, only receiving, 36% of other than white, black vote.

White (61%) of vote x (64%) of population = ( 39%)

of 51 % needed to Win Presidency.

at this point he only needs 12% points,

Instead he comes up short.. with only 47.6%

Black (2%) x (13%) = (00.3%)

Hispanic (36% of Hispanic/Asian/Others) x (23%) = (08.3%)

Totals 47.6 % and he loses the election ....

Lets assume No Republican can achieve more than 2% of black voters, then the Republican party needs to find the common Experience to connect with Hispanic, Asian and Multi Racial voters to achieve 51% of their vote last Tues and beyond.

Republicans didn't do that, and going forward with Birth rates, and rates of growth from 2000 Census, to 2010 Census.... They must "connect" and "gain loyalty" of Hispanic/Asian Voters, and their children!!!

As greater numbers of White voters age, they become more liberal, forgiving, and dependent of Federal Government (Medicare, Health, Drugs, Etc). Blacks have been very steady for many years at 12-13% of the population.

Hispanics, presently (20%) of voters, are growing quickly with higher birth rates and within the next 20 years Hispanics/Latin voters will grow even with White Voters.

If this happens and they stay with current (Voting Percentages).

No Republican will ever be elected to National Office !!!!!!

States such as, Texas, Florida, Louisiana, Arkansas and most likely OK will be Democratic at the State Level, Gov., Sen. and House of Reps will reflect these population and voting trends.

Republicans, need to do some "soul searching" in espanol!!

There is a reason why you have to pick "1" for English, and "2" for Spanish when you call the bank, or pretty much anywhere. In 10 years it might be "uno" for Espanol, and "dos" for English !!

WASHINGTON – Using a Pakistani Internet Protocol, or IP address, a disposable credit card and a fake address, A DEAD Terrorist, “Osama bin Laden” has successfully donated twice to Barack Obama’s presidential re-election campaign.

“Bin Laden” is currently set up on the official campaign website to contribute more to Obama’s campaign. The name is also registered as a volunteer.

Since the “foreign” contribution was sent, “Bin Laden’s” email address has received several solicitations from Obama’s campaign asking for more donations.

The apparently foreign-based contributions were conducted as a test after a flurry of media reports described the ability of foreigners to donate to the Obama campaign but not to Mitt Romney’s site, which has placed safeguards against such efforts.

The acceptance of foreign contributions is strictly illegal under U.S. campaign finance law.

One $15 donation was made at BarackObama.com using a confirmed Pakistani IP address. In other words, as far as the campaign website was concerned, the donation was openly identified electronically as coming from Pakistan.

Upon clicking the “donate” button, WND staff selected the $15 amount and were taken to a page on the campaign website asking for a first and last name, city, state, zip code, email address and phone number.

The information submitted was: “Osama bin Laden, 911 Jihad Way, Abbottabad, CA 91101.”

While the website only has options for U.S. states and zip codes, there is no mechanism in place on Obama’s website to verify the individual is actually located in that state or zip code, or even in the U.S.

The Obama campaign refuses to release the identification of donors who give less than $200

In the case of this donation, the 91101 zip code is real but corresponds to Pasadena, Calif., and not Abbottabad, the Pakistani city in which bin Laden was found holed up in a compound.

For a requested phone number, WND inputted the White House information line of (202) 456-2121.

The email address used to set up the donation account was osama4obama2012@gmail.com.

After clicking “next,” the website asked for an employer, occupation and a password to set up future donations. WND staff entered the occupation as “deceased terror chief” and the employer as “al-Qaida.”

The transaction was made last Friday with the use of a disposable credit card. The website did not require the card’s security code.

Barcodes on airline boarding passes can be read using smartphones and altered to allow passengers through lighter security checks, an aviation security researcher has claimed.

The U.S. Transport Security Administration (TSA) runs a program called PreCheck which allows frequent fliers to be randomly chosen for 'expedited screening' before boarding domestic flights.

Boarding passes for travel on U.S. airlines feature barcodes which include data telling security staff whether the passenger has been chosen to go through these less stringent checks.

Vulnerability: An airline security blogger has shown how boarding pass barcodes can be read using a phone then edited to allow passengers to avoid stringent pre-flight security checks

Those selected go through dedicated screening lines which allow them to leave on their shoes, belts and jackets, keep hold of their toiletries and laptops, and avoid the controversial full-body scanners.

With passengers able to print their boarding passes before they leave home, they can use barcode readers - which are available as smartphone apps - to see whether they have been selected.

The vulnerability in the system was highlighted last week by John Butler in his aviation blog Puckinflight - where he revealed the barcode information was unencrypted.

Explaining how he has been able to decode the barcode on a boarding pass for an upcoming trip, he writes that he has published the information because he is 'seriously concerned with boarding pass security'.

He shows how the final digit in the decoded data is either a one or a three - depending on whether or not the passenger has been selected for PreCheck.

'What terrorists or really anyone can do is use a website to decode the barcode and get the flight information, put it into a text file, change the 1 to a 3, then use another website to re-encode it into a barcode,' he writes.

'Finally, using a commercial photo-editing program or any program that can edit graphics [they can] replace the barcode in their boarding pass with the new one they created.'

Other information stored on the barcode could be changed in exactly the same way, Mr Butler explains, including the passenger name and even the flight details.

'The really scary part is this will get past both the TSA document checker, because the scanners the TSA use are just barcode decoders, they don’t check against the real time information,' he adds.

So as long as the passenger remembers to put three on the end of the data they will always get through. Mr Butler said he has contacted the TSA to report the vulnerability.

Barns & Noble Credit/Debit Readers Hacked

Barnes & Noble is warning its customers to check their credit and debit card statements for unauthorized transactions after discovering someone tampered with its card readers in 63 stores across the country.

Only one device was tampered with in each store, affecting fewer than 1 percent of card readers in Barnes & Noble stores, the company said in a news release on Wednesday. The company disconnected all of the devices at its 700 stores after discovering the tampering on Sept. 14.

The FBI asked Barnes & Noble not to disclose the breach last month, for fear of compromising the investigation.

The criminals apparently planted bugs in the devices to get customers’ credit card and PIN numbers, Barnes & Noble said, calling the tampering a “sophisticated criminal effort.”

The nation’s largest bookseller is working with federal law enforcement authorities as well as banks, payment card brands and issuers to identify accounts that may have been compromised.

But as a precaution, Barnes & Noble said debit card users who shopped at affected stores should change their pin numbers.

B&N insists its customer database is secure.

The company also stressed that the breach involved only purchases made in a store using one of the tampered devices and that transactions on Barnes & Noble.com, Nook devices and apps were not affected.

If this could be done at B&N, then why not Wal-Mart, Kroger, Costco, Target, etc, I would suspect that Barnes and Noble are not the only retail chain hacked.

John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry (also known as John Brown's raid or The raid on Harpers Ferry; in many books the town is called "Harper's Ferry" with an apostrophe-s.^[1]) was an attempt by white abolitionist John Brown to start an armed slave revolt by seizing a United States Arsenal at Harpers Ferry in Virginia in 1859. Brown's raid was defeated by a detachment of U.S. Marines led by Col. Robert E. Lee. John Brown had originally asked Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass, both of whom he had met in his formative years as an abolitionist in Springfield, Massachusetts, to join him when he attacked the armory, but illness prevented Tubman from joining him, and Douglass believed that his plan would fail and thus did not join.^[2]

In 1794, George Washington selected Harpers Ferry as the best site for the second of two United States Federal Arsenals. The first site selected – for the Springfield Armory in 1777 – was a hilltop in Springfield, Massachusetts, next to which John Brown lived during his formative years as an abolitionist. In 1825, the soldier John H. Hall was contracted to manufacture his famous rifle, the M1819 rifle, at Harper's Ferry.

Lee first offered the role of attacking the engine house to the local militia units on the spot. Both militia commanders declined, and Lee turned to the Marines. On the morning of October 18, Col. Lee sent Lt. J.E.B. Stuart, serving as a volunteer aide-de-camp, under a flag of truce to negotiate a surrender of John Brown and his followers. Lee instructed Lt. Israel Greene that if Brown refused, he was to lead the marines in storming the engine house. Stuart told Brown that his men would be spared if they surrendered. Brown refused and Stuart signaled to Lt. Greene and his men. Two marines armed with sledgehammers tried in vain to break through the door. Greene found a wooden ladder, and 10 marines used it as a battering ram to knock the front doors in. Greene was the first through the door and with the assistance of Lewis Washington identified and singled out John Brown. Greene later recounted what happened next:

"Quicker than thought I brought my saber down with all my strength upon [Brown's] head. He was moving as the blow fell, and I suppose I did not strike him where I intended, for he received a deep saber cut in the back of the neck. He fell senseless on his side, then rolled over on his back. He had in his hand a short Sharpe's cavalry carbine. I think he had just fired as I reached Colonel Washington, for the Marine who followed me into the aperture made by the ladder received a bullet in the abdomen, from which he died in a few minutes. The shot might have been fired by some one else in the insurgent party, but I think it was from Brown. Instinctively as Brown fell I gave him a saber thrust in the left breast. The sword I carried was a light uniform weapon, and, either not having a point or striking something hard in Brown's accouterments, did not penetrate. The blade bent double."^[10]

The action inside the engine house happened very quickly. In three minutes, all of the raiders still alive were taken prisoner and the action was over.

Robert E. Lee made a summary report of the events that took place at Harpers Ferry. According to Lee's notes Lee believed John Brown was insane, "...the plan [raiding the Harpers Ferry Arsenal] was the attempt of a fanatic or madman." Lee also believed that the African Americans used in the raid were forced to by John Brown himself. "The blacks, whom he [John Brown] forced from their homes in this neighborhood, as far as I could learn, gave him no voluntary assistance." Lee attributed John Brown's "temporary success" by creating panic and confusion and by "magnifying" the number of participants involved in the raid.^[11]

John Brown wrote his last prophecy on December 2 of 1859.

Colonel Lee and Lt. Greene searched the surrounding country for fugitives who had participated in the attack. John Brown was taken to the court house in nearby Charles Town for trial. He was found guilty of treason against the commonwealth of Virginia and was hanged on December 2. (This execution was witnessed by the actor John Wilkes Booth, who would later assassinate President Abraham Lincoln.) On the day of his execution, Brown wrote his last prophecy, which said,

“I John Brown am now quite certain that the crimes of this guilty, land: will never be purged away; but with Blood. I had as I now think: vainlyflattered myself that without very much bloodshed; it might be done.”

Four other raiders were executed on December 15 and two more on March 16, 1860.

John Brown was the first white man to use violence in an attempt to end slavery. This first use of violence by a white man scared many in the South, leading the Southern state militias to begin training for defense against further raids and, consequently, to the militarization of the South in preparation for a Northern invasion.^{[citation needed]}

The first Northern antislavery reaction to Brown's Raid was one of baffled reproach. William Lloyd Garrison called the raid "misguided, wild, and apparently insane." But through the trial, Brown transformed into a martyr. Henry David Thoreau, in A Plea for Captain John Brown, said, "I think that for once the Sharp's rifles and the revolvers were employed in a righteous cause. The tools were in the hands of one who could use them," and said of Brown, "He has a spark of divinity in him."^[12] Though "Harper's Ferry was insane," wrote the religious weekly the Independent, "the controlling motive of his demonstration was sublime." To the South, he was a murderer who wanted to deprive them of their property. The North "has sanctioned and applauded theft, murder, and treason," said De Bow's Review.^[13]^[14]

Patrick Cleburne "Clebe" McClary was raised on a 10,000 acre plantation in the South Carolina Low Country. Young Clebe grew up hunting, fishing and excelling at sports. After fulfilling his dream of becoming a college coach, Clebe had plans to marry a beautiful Southern belle. Life was very good. But only weeks before the wedding (March 26, 1967), Clebe witnessed a startling event on a college campus that changed the course of his life forever: the burning of an American flag by students protesting the Vietnam conflict. Dismayed by the lack of support for the country he loved, Clebe resigned from his coaching position and volunteered for duty in the Marine Corps.

Completing Officers Training School in Quantico, Virginia, First Lt. McClary said goodbye to his bride and became platoon leader of the 1st Recon Battalion in Vietnam.

On his 19th recon patrol, deep in hostile territory, Clebe and his unit engaged in hand-to-hand combat with the enemy. Suffering devastating injuries, which included the loss of his left arm and left eye, Clebe continued to lead his men. Clebe's valiant battle with the pain and disabilities that followed is nothing short of amazing. He spent over two years in military hospitals, undergoing over 30 major surgeries and countless hours of physical therapy.

Since then Clebe has used his powerful story of courage, determination and strength to motivate audiences the world over.

Sergeant Dakota L. Meyer is a United States Marine Corps veteran and the recipient of the

Medal of Honor,

the military’s highest honor, for his actions during the Battle of Ganjgal, which was part of

Operation Enduring Freedom in Kunar province, Afghanistan. Meyer is the first living Marine to

have received the medal since 1973 and one of the youngest. Humble and soft-spoken, Meyer insists

that he is not a hero, and that any Marine would do the same thing. He addresses inspiration,

motivation, courage, leadership, believing in yourself, doing what is right, and what happened that

day in Afghanistan.

The Attack. On September 8, 2009, in a remote eastern Afghanistan province, three U.S. Marines, a

U.S. Navy corpsman, and Afghan soldiers were missing after being ambushed by 50 insurgents, an

attack which Meyer – then a corporal – and Staff Sergeant Juan Rodriguez-Chavez heard over the

radio. Defying orders, Meyer told Rodriguez-Chavez that they were going into the “killing zone” to

help. Rodriguez-Chavez jumped into a Humvee and took the wheel; Meyer manned the gun, and

they headed into the area known to be inhabited by insurgents and under enemy fire.

Through five successive missions over the course of six hours, Meyer helped save the lives of 13

American and 23 Afghan troops. Meyer also found the bodies of the four missing men, and, with

the help of some friendly Afghan soldiers, he moved the bodies to a safer area where they could be

extracted. All told, Meyer evacuated 12 friendly, wounded troops and provided cover for another 24.

He suffered shrapnel wounds to his arm, and, despite his heroic efforts, he did not expect to survive

the battle. “I wasn’t really thinking I could die, it was just a matter of when,” said Meyer. “I never

thought I was going to come out…[but] that’s what Marines do.” He was only 21 at the time.

The Award. During a ceremony on September 15, 2011, President Barack Obama awarded Meyer

with the Medal of Honor. Obama stated that Meyer is incredibly down-to-earth, saying that when he

tried to tell him that he would be receiving the award, Meyer didn’t take the call. Meyer was working

a new job in construction and asked the president to call him back another time. Obama jokingly

recounted that Meyer said, “If I don’t work, I don’t get paid.” The president called him back during

his lunch break and thanked him for taking the call. “

Dakota is the kind of guy who gets the job

done,” Obama stated. He and Meyer had talked over beers the day before the award ceremony.

Meyer was also inducted into the Hall of Heroes at the Pentagon and honored with a parade at

Marine Corps Barracks in Washington, DC.

Currently, Meyer is partnering with the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation to raise $1 million by

the Foundation’s 50th anniversary on May 28, 2012. He has also issued the “Dakota Meyer

Scholarship Challenge to America” to match his efforts and raise an additional $1 million to “honor

Marines by educating their children.”

VALPARAISO — Ben Baltz wasn’t excited about competing in yet another triathlon last weekend.

It was his third in the last few months. While he likes bicycling, running isn’t his favorite activity, especially if he can’t win doing it.

The 11-year-old had completed the 150-yard swim and three-mile bike ride in Sunday’s Sea Turtle Tri on Pensacola Beach, but about a half-mile into the run, he knew something was wrong.

“It (the leg) wobbles,” Ben said Wednesday at his home in Valparaiso.

Moments later, the screws on his prosthetic leg came loose and he went down.

What happened next, though, has captured the attention of the nation.

In the moments Ben was debating whether he could hop or maybe crawl the rest of the mile, a man named Matthew Morgan, a Marine who had volunteered to help at the youth event, stepped in.

“(Morgan said) ‘You need help?’ and I said, ‘Sure,’ and he picked me up and carried me,” Ben said.

For the next half mile, Ben held onto Pfc. Morgan with one arm and his prosthetic leg with the other.

Ben said he and Morgan didn’t really speak after their first exchange, but more Marines gathered around and sang a cadence.

As they reached the end and the crowd started roaring, Ben said he felt grateful for the help, but a little frustrated and embarrassed that he couldn’t complete the course on his own.

Freedom of movement is one thing Ben has gotten used to since he was fitted with a prosthetic leg in the summer of 2009. His lower right leg was removed the year before when he was 6 because of a type of bone cancer called osteosarcoma.

Until Sunday, his most spectacular leg malfunction came during a soccer game that he finished by taping it together with duct tape.

As news of his latest malfunction spreads, first on CNN’s website and then elsewhere, Ben remains mystified about why everyone is so interested in talking to him, especially since he didn’t finish the race on his own.

“He has no idea what the big deal is,” his mother Kim Baltz said with a laugh. “He honestly does not. He thinks it’s the Marines.”

According to John Murray, one of the co-founders of Team MPI, which organized the Sea Turtle Tri and helps athletes train for triathlons, no one even knew what had happened to Ben until an announcer spotted him and told the crowd.

“It was kind of a build-up in a way as more and more people became aware,” said Murray, who was standing at the finish line with his wife. “There wasn’t a dry eye in the place. … I was just overcome by emotion.”

Ben’s father, JC, seems to be having the easiest time processing Ben’s skyrocket to fame. He says a shared moment just before the race seemed to almost foreshadow his son and the Marine inspiring a nation with their actions.

JC and Ben were on the beach tossing a football when JC pulled out the bag of Dove dark chocolate candies he always carries and offered his son a piece.

Never one to turn down candy, the STEMM Middle School sixth-grader accepted the chocolate and found an inspirational message inside the wrapper his father had never seen before, despite constantly having it on hand.

It read, “You’re exactly where you need to be.”

Between sampling and selling his first batch of Heroes Vodka, Marine veteran Travis McVey concocted a catchy marketing slogan.

“Some people drink to forget. We drink to remember,” McVey said in a phone interview this week, referring partly to two friends, Marine buddies killed in the line of duty.

“I was sitting at the VFW on (a recent) Memorial Day with some other veterans. I was looking at the bar,” McVey said. “I was thinking: No one has ever really marketed a veteran-owned spirit company. And what better name than ‘Heroes?’ Everybody has served, but the guys who didn’t come back are true heroes to me. I wanted to create a product that would be in honor of their service, something that people could raise their glass to and give a toast.”

The first vodka made by a veteran for veterans hit stores last February in Tennessee, where McVey lives. For distribution, he partnered with Nashville-based Lipman Brothers. This fall, Heroes became available in six more states, including New York and Georgia, and the company plans to expand into New England and the Pacific Northwest. A portion of the profits will be used to help ex-service members, McVey said.

In addition to winning several spirit-industry taste awards for its self-described “slightly toasty and roasted” flavor, Heroes offers an intriguing business test case. Veteran entrepreneurs – McVey calls them “vetrepreneurs” – aim to tap an ultra-loyal, 22 million-member veteran community to shop their services or push their products, including: wild salmon, a "defensive driving" school, appliance repair, a barber shop and, now, vodka.

“Veterans are going to give me a first look” for their next vodka purchase, said McVey, 42. “But that’s also because veterans are known for their quality of service. It’s who we are, and how we’re trained. So, yeah, veterans will give another veteran a shot. That’s just what we do.”Veterans buy from veterans: That’s the hot saying in ex-military financial circles, particularly with hundreds of thousands of former service members unable to land jobs. That patriotic consumer base has convinced more than 3 million men and women who have served the country to launch small businesses, reports the National Veteran-Owned Business Association. The group uses a two-word logo and mantra: “Buy veteran.”

A Florida man died Friday night after consuming "dozens of roaches and worms" during a contest held by a pet store, police report.

Edward Archbold, 32, collapsed after winning the repulsive contest at Ben Siegel Reptile Store. Archbold, who was competing for a free python, was stricken outside the Deerfield Beach business, according to the Broward County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators reported that Archbold "wasn’t feeling well and began to regurgitate" shortly after the contest's conclusion. "He had consumed dozens of roaches and worms," a sheriff’s spokesman noted.

Archbold was pronounced dead after being transported to an area hospital. An autopsy was conducted, and the Broward County medical examiner is awaiting test results to determined Archbold's cause of death.

The roach-eating contest was part of the reptile store's October 5 sale. Contestants had four minutes to devour the most discoid roaches, which can grow up to three inches long.

Asked about the python won by Archbold, the store reported on its Facebook page that, "The snake is being held in his name and is full property of his estate."
