Since it was announced that Bushwick Open Studios will be taking place in October and not on their usual summer date, a couple fledgling fests have tried to fill the void. There’s been the Bushwick Arts Festival, which was a bit of a letdown, and the Bushwick Galleries Association’s Hot Summer Nights of extended hours, which are great but for galleries only. So when we heard tell of a new Bushwick art festival called the Bushwick Open Art Fair, we were skeptical. What would make their “Bears on Bicycles”-themed fair different from the other upstarts? But then the organizers told us they’re “currently looking into the permits required to have live animals at the show.”

That’s right, Marina Reiter of the East Village’s Studio 26 Gallery and Doug Hollier of Bushwick’s New Apostle Gallery are taking the “Bears on Bicycles” theme for serious. And while they’re planning to throw the fair concurrent to BoS and not before (86 more sleeps!), we wanted to know more. (If only to bask in the irony that the year BoS reschedules in order to seem less circus-like, a circus-themed art fair attempts to ride its coattails.)

Reiter, an abstract foil painter originally from Moscow, and Hollier, a post-pop artist originally from England, are both practicing artists in Bushwick and have seen their fair share of… fairs. In fact, the last time we bumped into Hollier, whose murals grace the facades of various Brooklyn buildings, he was showing off his clever portraits of David Bowie and Iggy Pop at Select Fair. “We have a good knowledge of the international art fair scene and how it’s kind of developed over the last 10 years,” he told us more recently, adding that a fair is where he met Reiter last December– at Aqua Art Miami.

They’ve kept in touch since then, and while walking near Hollier’s Starr Street home one night, remarked that the defunct window frame manufacturing building across the street would make for a fine art fair venue. “That’s how the idea got started,” said Hollier. Then in another conversation– Hollier doesn’t know how they got on the subject– Reiter mentioned that circuses in China and Russia still have performing bears on bicycles. “So we came up with the idea of calling it ‘Bears on Bicycles’ and giving it sort of a circus extravaganza theme,” he said. The art needn’t be circus-themed, but there will be circus decor and they’re in talks with several performance houses and individual performance artists.

“Although Bushwick has got a big visual arts scene it’s also got a very established performing arts scene. A lot of that is straight-up circus-style stuff,” explained Hollier. Reiter added: “If you go to a lot of performing venues in Bushwick, you come across a lot of carnival scenes, performances, burlesque. This is everything that comes to mind when you mention ‘Bushwick performing arts.’ So we thought that would be a really good idea for the first inaugural edition of the art fair, that kind of embodies the Bushwick performing arts atmosphere.” Not to mention Hollier is a bit of a Barnum & Bailey history buff, regaling us with how up until the ’50s, the “Greatest Show on Earth” stopped its big tops near Myrtle/Wyckoff. He’s also “personally fascinated by [P.T. Barnum’s] originally advertising strategies.” Erego the live animal permit enquiries.

Hollier said the inspirational window manufacturing building has been promised to a wall-climbing gym developer, but they found an approximately 20,000-square-foot former commercial/industrial facility between the Morgan and Jefferson L train stops. They launched their website Friday, are now accepting exhibitor applications, and are hoping to see submissions from both New York and international galleries. “We want to engage the blue chip galleries, but instead of showing just the typical expo-style convention center model, we want to incorporate the Bushwick scene,” said Reiter, with Hollier adding that “that’s the kind of key point. It’s giving international blue chip galleries the opportunity to present their artists’ work in the current avant-garde Bushwick scene, and creating a Bushwick theme that they’re not going to get in Switzerland, they’re not going to get in Asia, they’re only going to get it in Bushwick.”

According to a press release, “Bears on Bicycles” will commence with an invitation-only VIP Preview Extravaganza on Thursday, September 29th at 3 pm. The VIP Preview Extravaganza will run until 6 pm, at which time the art fair will open to the public. The fair is slated to run through Sunday, October 2nd.

David S Pollack, known by many names but most frequently Chase Alias[5] and Cubby. Pollack sees his work as Immersion Art. The catalyst for his unique blend of gonzo journalism, method acting and new media art occurred out of personal tragedy. "Basehouse: a Meditation Play-place for Cubby" 2005–2010,[6][7] was a response to his mothers untimely death. It is a unique social commentary on the world of illegal drugs and how societies propaganda and rhetoric is the true antagonist. "Who I M",[8] series is an undercover examination of gay online hookups and introduces a unique method for presenting Immersion Journalism. Pollack uses actual instant message conversations and overlays them onto the images used in the conversations. He sees his works as a "Mimesis" or mimetic and uses social media and his many blogs to work out his unique art. His work is therefore presented in a New Media Photo-Journalistic Way using various social media outlet, blogs and Creative Commons.

Compelled to join this forum by the interesting post and responses to Alterism. I was pleased to see so many researching this Art Form.

Alterism or Alter Art is a Fairly new Term being used in Philosophy and Culture as an Emergence Theory. Alterism has gained incredible momentum as a Fine Art Movement Since It's Inception in 2002. http://basehouse.00iami00.com by B.Cubby Brent and Alter of Chasealias DS Pollack. The Artists Use Alters or Avatars Online and in Real Life Performance Art to Question the Reality of Identity. The band Alter Ego uses similar concepts in their musical cannon. Exemplified with their album Alter Art and their album Art which has many Alterism references.

Poetry, Blogging, Self Portraits, Gonzo and Immersion Journalism play a vital role in this Rapidly Growing Net Performance Art.

Since this is a Conceptual Art at its basis anything can be the Art. As a Performance Art the ultimate goal is Existentialism as Art. A Deep Understanding of Living as Art and the oneness of all Humanity.

Oddly the lack of product leads me to on openness. The Idea that a creation of a Mise en Scene with my Conceptual Cannon will be my Art.

I am a Performance Artist and Alter Artist working primarily online and in Social Media using Online Avatars to question the reality of Identity. ie. "What's in a Name?" Performance Art is Considered the Highest and Rarest form of Conceptual Fine Art. My works are among the first to incorporate the internet as Public Domain to Create Cyber Performance and Public Sculptures. The works are not dissimilar to that of Banksy. However, instead of my work being on the side of buildings, it's on IP, and DNS. Now corporations have two choices. Maintain and promote my works, becoming heroes and benefactors of the next great movement in the Art world, or destroy my Net Art. Setting the stage for a David V Goliath Scenario and allowing for my works to be promoted and glorified elsewhere, which I assure you they will.

Chase Alias, a Performance Artist, spends extended periods of time studying his characters. Often living in their homes and wearing their clothing. It has become a ritualistic part of his method acting technique. The Performance Art Itself comes in any form, whether it is one on one, online chat, live and/or recorded video or audio. Pollack adds to genres of Performance Art and Net Art the dimensions of the "social network" and the possibility that humans can be anyone they choose to be.

This topic of using multiple identities and alters has become a vital point in the cloud computing security lexicon. Causing many to question Pollack's motives, often calling his work 'identity-fraud' and a 'violation of corporate policy'. Yet, as it stands, the ability for an Artist to create a character, "IS" freedom of speech and if a 'Corporate Policies' are in truth violating people's first amendment rights. then this work has served a very valid purpose. The protection of Freedom of Expression, Speech and the Net Art.

An interesting thread has been popping up on my email these days. I guess there is a sort of ongoing conversation about the defining of Net Art. It's based around the application process for Net Prix. Which last year attempted to ask for that very deffinition. I have been carefully listening for my opportunity to chime in.

The moderation is wonder. Particularly in the interpretation of the need for Net Art to have greater resemblance to Art in general. As in having a need to take into a account the viewers response, reaction and interaction. Agreed. This is where I define Net Art, Alter Art(alter-ism), Conceptual Art and Particularly Dada Style Performance Art which when executed online as Net Art can hope to fulfill these issues.

As you can probably tell, I’ve ‘rebranded’, so to speak. Sasquatch is being reserved for special purposes and is not phased out of my personal/professional usage. In the meantime, I’ve been battling some serious bouts of depression and haven’t felt better in months, even with the advent of precious summer. I’ve been thinking and rethinking, but mostly overthinking. About life, music, art, school, religion, spirituality, work, play, everything. I’ve never felt genuinely happy in the longest time. Not even in the present moment. I see countless friends all over social media doing brilliant things, holding parties, making strides in their creative careers, finding love, travelling the world and even meeting amazing people. Meanwhile, I’m working my behind off at a menial job, paying off school debt, only to be otherwise stuck at home, watching my sister whenever I’m not working! My life feels meaningless, and it’s honestly going nowhere. There’s been no growth, no life and no celebration, where I am. My only choices are to be complacent or change my life completely and get out of my state. But alas, I’m stuck here with nowhere to go. I’m looking for better, but can’t find it in myself to get an answer. Living in the moment is too painful to bear, and I can’t even be content in that.

Just like Seth Siegelaub was to Conceptual Art and Artists. And how we now realize his exhibition and influence make him one of the greatest conceptual artists of his time. Perhaps the Art bloggers and their blogs are in fact creating the most pertinent art of our time.

That's exactly the way I create my work and Art. I also believe that you, Paddy Johnson are, or at least have the ability to be, the Seth Siegelaub of our time. Take that as you will. However, to me Art is in everything we create. The digital critic holds immense power. Those bold enough to state, that what they create, "is Art" are the "now".

There is, and will forever be, a contradiction in any contemporary art movement. Particularly when it comes to New Media, Conceptual and Performance Art. Just realize, that mere existence of contrasting perspectives is exactly how we can tell where Art lives.
