I know it's been months since I've posted, and life is well- life. But after having a brief breather from school, and seeing a beyond-inspirational video in the virtual world, I wanted to put together a video compilation of Chase's first year...

August Has Arrived!

Despite it being my least favorite time of year, we've kept busy and tried to keep balance... easier said than done! I looked back through the last couple weeks of photos and realized a) there aren't many for once, b) many are of food challenges/accomplishments as we play with our Master Chef challenges, and c) most of the photos that do exist of the kids are of them getting into trouble. So... with that, I'll try to share the few good ones I have :)

Chase at Calvin's 3rd birthday party!

The kiddos as part of the "Facepainting Extravaganza" we did for Aunt Julz' portfolio building... nothing like 20+ kids over for a few hours running around like nut cases... very... long... day... !!!!

Chase deciding that my looking away for 60 seconds was a great opportunity to grab his oatmeal for himself... this stuff is AWFUL to clean up!

And the lovely, ungrateful bug Kaely with her complaining about summer... One more week until school is back in!

Chase has been running through the house now (literally), and takes great pride in helping with dusting, vacuuming, putting away dishes, and especially throwing away trash (and things that aren't really trash)- including his "stinky" diapers (as he says the whole way to the trash). More and more he insists on self-feeding, or feeding others- like the dogs and fish- which can be messy, but he's getting pretty good at it. I realize how much he understands now, and well, it's kind of scary!

His newer words and phrases (in addition to the list from 2 months ago) include:

-grapes (one of my favs for some reason- it's just so cute/funny the way he says it)

-apples

-drink (close enough)

-crackers

-cookies (Dave's fav word that he says- he gets so excited over cookies!)

-food (fish food, dog food, just plain FOOD!)

-book

-key

-kitty

-duck

-bear

-chicken

-(insert animal sounds for horse, pig, chicken, sheep, bird, spraying sound for spray bottles (zssstt, zssst) or snoring for sleep)

-baby (this is also said in a whiny voice as his way of asking to be picked up and carried around like a baby)

-"good girl"

-sit/sit down (most of this relates to the dogs)

-up/down

-eyes

-ears

-feet

-teeth

-shoes

-brush (comes out like... I'm not sure what- but it's regarding brushing his teeth)

-Daddy! (sounds different from before- now he says it with humor)

-"Where-did-it-go?" (I need to get this on video to get the sound of how he says it)

-Whats'up

-yuck/gross/stinky (all of the above- of which he cries "STINKY!" in public after he has a dirty diaper)

-milk (comes out as 'gilk')

-light (comes out as 'gight')

On that note I have realized lately that he does not pronounce "L, M, or N"- hence, no "mommy"- so "milk" is "gilk" and "No" is "bow"... kind of backwards on what most kids do, but he also uses a lot of "F, S, TH," etc. So it balances out in my mind. I know I'm missing other phrases, but it's late and my brain has stopped working :)

He still favors his left hand with eating or different activities- but uses his right hand a lot too. Who knows (and who cares? Honestly)! But it may help explain how he does things in a different manner and on his own schedule. LOL, I'm sure I'll be seeking answers to that puzzling thing for many years to come.

To say the last couple weeks have been challenging would be an understatement, but what is our life without a little wrench or two to add to the mix? At the end of the day we can't complain too much... but when we have that first morning of cool air in the fall return while everyone is in school and we are back on some sort of schedule again? Well, it will be a wonderful, wonderful day!

Crazy-fun that is! Well, at least most the time :) I have been pleasantly surprised how much fun we've had the past week considering it's summer and we get cabin fever. However, the kids have found ways to have fun in the most unusual places and manners.

Such as Chase and the vacuum- honestly- him and this vacuum!

Or this poor toy stroller (once again)- they busted the wheel off it shortly after this was taken... BOYS!

Or the box that the ceiling fan came in- converted to an airplane...

Or later converted to a train...

Or the dog leash on Sissy...

Or helping mom with chores...

Or waiting for the bread to finish baking...

and moving furniture throughout the house... or the darn box again- seriously- do NOT buy toys- just go to the store and pick up a free box!!!

And you can't forget summer treats best worn all over!

Welcome to our Lemonade Stand

When life throws you a bag of lemons (or a truckload) what do you do? You make lemonade!

It's a good thing Dave LOVES lemons, and well, the kids and I are pretty good at whipping up a batch of sweet lemonade to share around. That is... find the good in any situation and run with it! I think it's life's way of making you appreciate the simpler things and to get creative and resourceful for survival.

It's hard to believe it's already been a couple of weeks since the 4th of July festivities, and the summer is flying by whether we're ready or not. Did I mention Chase is full on walking now? Attempting to run, but still toddling more than anything.. He is so proud of himself, and is enjoying the new-found skill (at least we did it by the 18 month mark- sheesh!)

We had a get-together to celebrate (Aunt) Julia's 26th birthday, (Uncle) Brandon's 19th, and Kaely's 8th birthday with a "typical" family (chaotic) dinner. Always a bustle of energy and craziness!

I also had to work on a school project for my Cultural Diversity course which meant exploring an ethnic restaurant that I had never been to. When I thought about this, I realized there weren't many types of foods I hadn't tried at least once, except Indian food. So while we had originally planned a nice date night out for Dave and I to check out the local restaurant (Passage to India), I realized that clearly wasn't going to happen, so instead I took both kids along with me. I was terrified- honestly. It's hard enough trying to take them anywhere with help, but going by myself? and with food they were likely not going to like? ACK! So, going for dinner at 4:30 pm, and was welcomed with an empty restaurant (briefly- but gratefully). Kaely amazingly went along with the rule of at least trying things, and Chase? Well, as usual he ate it all. It was a really awesome experience!

We were also fortunate enough to have received a new hammock, which has been the highlight at the summer apparently. It has made the usually oppressively hot and muggy summer, bearable and thoroughly enjoyable. Everyone has been fighting over who gets to 'play' in it, and we've spent so much more time outdoors just enjoying the simple things.

That also includes the inflatable water/splash area for the kiddos- if it didn't kill the yard I'd leave it out all the time!

Kaely also found her stash of toys in the garage (from back in December when she got in trouble), so the baby doll stroller had become the (short-lived) fun indoors- it was NOT meant for little toddler butts (much less Kaely's much larger one!) to sit in, but at that point it was worth the laughs. Chase even spent time pushing Kaely around the house in it- hilarious!

As usual, our days often revolve around food- and Chase has learned really quickly that yummy things come out of the oven. He loves standing there staring at whatever is baking- or trying to climb the darn oven. UGH!

We've also picked up the ability to "Pimp Out My Ride"- I actually googled how to pimp out my bicycle, and had a good laugh over all that I found. What can I say? Chase is loving it!!

As the summer of Master Chef continues as well, we had to do proper research on what the heck a macaron (not a macaroon) tasted like. So... off we went to the French bakery down the road- the little pink thing? Yep, that's it. At $1.60 a cookie (holy crap!) I had high hopes before I attempted to make it (part of the pressure test on the show a couple weeks ago). A bit (waaaayyy) too sweet for my taste, but I believe if I can ever find almond flour... challenge accepted! The kids had a blast with watching the bustle of the bakery while we ate our choquettes and Kae's cinnamon roll (big surprise!).

Chase and I even made the 5 1/2- 6 mile (almost 12 miles roundtrip) trek to Target the other day on the bike, and minus the rain on the way back- I was shocked to realize- hey! I can do this! (Okay, Dave wants me to carry a taser now- but still!) This is better than a gym- Chase is happy as pie being outdoors and on the bike, and I get a ton of exercise, save money on gas, and it's better for the environment!

Sure, things are a little more challenging- but isn't that what I usually enjoy in life? My sister has been gracious enough to help me out so I can still continue to volunteer at the hospital, which was honestly my biggest concern- but I still get to go. If I can help even just one mom (like the one who was struggling with a friend of hers continuing to give unsolicited advice- just reassuring her that she is the boss of that baby- empowerment!), it makes it worthwhile.

It's exciting to realize what we're capable of when put to the test- so with that? I will sit here and sip on this delicious lemonade ;)

Time is flying, and so is Chase! He has really picked up the walking skill, and is starting to fly down the halls (still a bit on the clumsy side, but every day is an improvement!). It has been actually kind of fun watching both boys now, as they play together more and more- minus the arguing over toys constantly. However, Chase is a little boy now- not a baby- and it's crazy to see the changes happen.

Self-feeding is... well... a form of messy entertainment at the very least!

Chase continues to try to help with every house project- how exciting the weekend of plumbing was!

We also had the 4th of July, and kept it low key- most importantly the kids had fun and were well worn out!

Oh baby girl... my sweet tempered, easy going (in comparison), child of mine... 8 years ago you arrived and made me believe pregnancy, childbirth, and infancy were a breeze. Gee thanks for the disillusion!!! Just kidding ;)

Anyway- she's an amazing little girl, and while she drives me batty too, we have some awesome times! Chase was not to be left out last night, and we even got him on skates! To be honest- these couple hours were way more fun than the weekend attempt at a vacation. My favorite part? Seeing unrestrained, spontaneous smiles and laughs. Made the entire week better!

Our Lovely Weekend at the Mayfair

Oh Chase... Chase, Chase... Chase....

Well. Here's the deal. I decided to book another stay at the Mayfair in Coconut Grove- where we went for part of our honeymoon, and again for our first anniversary. So for whatever reason I thought it'd be a great idea to do again. Now, don't get my wrong, I had offers to allow family to watch Chase for a couple days so we could go solo- but, me being me, realized I knew he'd flip out, and then I'd be stressed and have separation anxiety, and all that. At least for a night would be okay, but not 2- 2 1/2 days.

So, we packed up everything and set off. We ended up making a detour to visit family, which ended up being probably the best part of the whole trip since it was low key, relaxing, etc. We got to play out in the water and on a boat, and that kept him happy for the most part :)

Then we got back into the car... LOL. Nap time is our first issue with trying to travel- it gets all messed up, and sleep deprivation does no one any good. Once we arrived in Coconut Grove, we got unpacked and settled and needed to eat! So we packed up Chase into the stroller and set off on foot, excited by all the porch-side restaurants which would normally be perfect. We decided on Lulu, and ordered a glass of wine and a small meal to share. He quickly decided he'd rather twist himself around and throw himself head first onto the ground than stay in the stroller (no he did not actually fall), so then I sat him in my lap. Then he keeps trying to play with the silverware and ceramic plates, and continues to squirm and fuss... the wine comes- I get a cool two sips before I have to stand up and start trying to distract him (meanwhile other curbside patrons are staring)... The wonderful (3 ct.) scallops and risotto show up, so I end up giving him half of my portion- which he ate gladly, but then went back to fussing/crying/screaming. Dave tried taking him a couple times, but it ended up only making a bigger scene. At this point I just let Dave finish my glass, and we hurried the check along and took off. I wanted to cry, I was so tired and stressed by all the crying- ridiculous! But, back in the stroller and moving along, he was giving a smirk to reinforce the experience. UGH

Then- we get back to the room, and don't get me wrong, it's pretty late for him- nearly 9pm, so we turn down the lights and try to get him to calm down for bedtime. I found out the hot tub on the balcony had not warmed up like it was supposed to, so we had maintenance come in (another distraction), and set down to reading books and trying to go to sleep... next thing you know, it's nearly 11pm, Dad's passed out, and Chase is still wide awake. Oh yeah- forgot to mention that placing him in the pack 'n play only resulted in screaming and feeling like we would get kicked out of the hotel (the hotel is another issue I addressed separately). So... finally... in the middle of the bed, he passed out.

The entire night we got jabbed in the face and back and other areas with his legs or arms, he would wake up, sit straight up and look like he was going to start playing... then insist on laying directly on me. Needless to say, not much sleep was had. The next morning we had massages set up (part of the package), so I had to arrive around 8:30 to "enjoy the full experience" (hahaha!). Fed him his oatmeal the best I could, and set off in the stroller. The spa ended up not being open yet (apparently someone was running late), so I had least had a few minutes to read on my own if nothing else. After my massage, we switched so Dave could have his, and Chase and I took off for coffee... well, you know that couldn't be so simple- we did manage to survive through him eating a pastry while sitting outdoors, but then when I went into Gap (Dave needed a new t-shirt, he didn't believe in packing I guess- LOL), the whole crap started with him refusing to sit in the stroller, and throwing himself around. So, of course I'm walking around holding him and pushing the stroller- which is ridiculous. Nonetheless... I ran back to the room to try to get him to nap. It worked for a bit (thank God), but was short lived.

After his nap we decided to just grab something "quick and simple" -like Chili's... they had a patio at Cocowalk, and sounded like a good idea. We order drinks and food all at once, and then I raced to grab some crayons. He insisted on climbing around again, trying to bang the utensils around, and the crayons and other toys were boring I guess. Our server passed by again after 5-10 minutes delivering food to another table and we still hadn't gotten our water. After the guy who walked in behind us was delivered his full lunch and drinks- I lost it and we walked out. Sorry- but a toddler brings out the shortest patience in a person I think. Foolishly, we decided to try Cheesecake Factory which was a floor below... UGH. Let's just say tons of silverware, dishes, and being stuck indoors... I felt like I was trying to pass a debutante test while wrestling with an eel. I did not taste any of the food and while Chase got to enjoy his, I just wanted to go hide for a while.

We made it back to the hotel with a ton of food (and cheesecake- duh), and decided that the pool would be a great idea for him. Outdoors, water, freedom... yeah... so we suit up, get sunblock on, and head up. But, of course it's a rooftop pool with a poolside bar, so the people up there were likely not happy about seeing a baby arrive- but whatever. After we get situated- I daydreamed about being able to read my book while lounging in the chaise lounges they had- it was awesome. Until reality struck, and I realized Chase would not sit still, but would not go in the water with Dad, and when coerced into the water cried and fussed the entire time. I went in, but it was cold! So that was short lived. Came back out and he just wanted to push around the furniture- but the ground was burning hot, so then he cried about that. 20 minutes later I gave up and just decided to go back to the room. I cannot tell you how exhausting this kid is!

So back up to the room, we decided to play in the hot tub, but of course then he didn't want to be in there unless I was, and by then I was just done. So he followed us around- and I attempted to put him down for a nap in the pack 'n play again (ha!)... to which he just cried... and cried... and cried.... Eventually I was able to get him to sleep, and tip toed around while he snored on the bed for an hour...

It was late, and we knew we were going to have to get dinner somehow. We had leftovers still, but... I just wanted a darn loaf of French bread, and crack open a bottle of wine. No way was I going to sit through another restaurant attempt. So, we found a local organic market that was in walking distance according to the web, so we set off on foot. Needless to say, we never found it- I don't believe it ever existed, and we were faced with what the heck to do again. We found a wine bar that had a menu advertising a french cheese with bread appetizer so we took it to go, and headed back. The rest of the evening was pretty much the same as the previous night- got him cleaned up and tried reading books to ready him for bed. Eventually I got him to sleep, and was terrified to move- it was around 8pm, so here we are, on vacation, and I'm stuck with my arm underneath him. I read- and eventually we turned on the tv- and that was the sheer excitement.

Another restless night and awoke to water dripping throughout the room- I had just had it. We checked out by 9 am, gave up on the idea of having a nice breakfast, and just hit the road running...

sigh... never again! well, at least not until he's older, or we have other people with us, or are on a cruise where I can send him to kids camp... This kid knows what he's doing- and if it's not all about him- forget it!!!

I will say, as soon as we got home he was happy as anything- chased after the dogs, played on his toys, and ran throughout the house. So... I guess that's where we'll be from now on :)

Things That Go VRRRRRRMMMMM....

The highlight of the past week has been full of go, Go, GO! Kaely had her week-long horse camp where she got to learn about some of the care-taking of horses, riding both English & Western, and then some crafts & water activity. If it weren't so darn far away (a good 30-45 minute drive each way), I'd try to do another week- or the whole summer. Ah well, will post pics once we get them... she did awesome. I cannot wait until the future years that allow me to hopefully be able to put her in lessons and all that good stuff. I think that me being involved with horses in my pre-teen and early teen years kept me out of a world of trouble...

Then we have swim lessons for both kiddos going on. I was admittedly nervous about Kaely's class because she kept claiming she could swim to the other side, but I hadn't actually seen it- so I worried I had her placed in the wrong level class. However- she surprised me and has been doing really good. Definitely needing and benefiting from the lessons, but soaking up the knowledge and skills immediately. Very glad we did it!

Chase also surprised me with swim lessons this week. I spent the first class warning everyone how we cries/screams the whole time, but he's learning so it's important... we get into the the water, and all of a sudden he's now laughing and smiling and playing... What on earth??? It's been amazing, and I am so grateful I signed up for another round of lessons, otherwise I may have been left with the belief he just hated the water (which I knew couldn't be true), and that it was a lost cause. Looking forward to the rest of the lessons and the summer- I've given up on my hair for the summer, no point to doing anything with it since we're in and out of the pool. So... retro fro- here we come!

Lastly, my sister helped with Chase this week while I went to the hospital for the volunteer shift, and the other day when I dropped off Kaely at camp, but realized it was too far to drive all the way back home. So I took the opportunity to set up my own camp at Panera to try to get school work and studying done (Finals this week- and not just for the NBA!). So Chase had a chance to really play outside our house- and with Nathan for 2 days. One of Nathan's toys from Christmas was a Powerwheels 4-wheeler... I walked in to pick them up Wednesday, and I see Chase sitting on the thing, with Kaely behind him... I think- ummm, okay... then I turn around and Nathan's sitting on it- Chase gets on behind him, reaches around, and starts pushing the throttle driving them both around. I couldn't believe it! LOL. So lots of belly laughs since it was such an odd sight to me. So after another day of Chase playing on it nonstop and refusing to get off, they gave up and told us to just take it home. LOL.

But... we couldn't find the charger that same day, so by the time we got it home, the battery had died, and this was Chase first thing the next morning- he was so disappointed/confused/upset about why it wouldn't work. LOL.

Now we have it fully charged and ready to go... he's spent many hours on it, ramming into the walls and cabinets (still working on the concept of steering), and chasing after the dogs. We even brought it outside to play... honestly- it's AWESOME (so thank you Raeshel!).... One more fun activity to add to summer!

A Week (or Two) in Review

This will be a blog of pictures more than anything... since it was Kaely's last week of school- and just started summer a few days ago- we've accumulated a ton of photos. Plus, Chase has been in full gear on getting into trouble everywhere we turn. He has decided to start taking steps though, so very excited about that! Becoming very adept at walking while holding onto just a finger of mine, and taking leaps/runs from the couch or tv stand towards me. The best is his expression when he does it- he's so excited!

We started watching our favorite summertime tv show- Master Chef this week, and I let Kaely stay up to watch it. Since they featured a cheesecake on it, we had to make it the next day. She did such a great job- and man was it yummy!!!

We also (finally) tackled our floor project in the living room- tearing out the lovely carpet that has been destroyed over the past few years (as shown by Chase below)... and installing wood laminate flooring. Chase wanted to help as much as possible. Definitely adorable until he wanted to stay with Daddy outside while sawing the planks. Lots of things going on this week- but always something to entertain us!

Summer Time is Fast Approaching!

Today is Kaely's last day of school- which is a big moment of "OH NO! What are we going to do all summer???"

However, I think the happiest person in this scenario will be Chase, because he loves to play with his sister. Which reminds me of how he goes around following her saying "Sissy!, Sissy!"... which, adds to his vocabulary that still excludes mom. His complete vocabulary includes:

Stinky (my usual response when I walk into his room after a nap- yuck!)

"Bow" -which is his word for "NO!" - usually when he doesn't want anymore milk or whatever you are trying to give him

I'm sure there are things I'm forgetting, but that's the usual daily list... working on more! He's also still working on the walking bit- getting more daring, and will walk while holding one hand- although he walks kind of sideways which is fairly entertaining.

Swim classes have been interesting. He is the most dramatic kid in class for sure. Although Nathan is close behind. Yesterday was the best example of the drama... he cried the entire time to begin with, but then when it was time to do the 2-legged shark hold (aka, holding their legs to push them off to someone waiting- to get them to get the motion of swimming/gliding in the water), he would cry, then on the count of 3 we would normally be prepared to go underwater. But on the count of 1 or 2 he would jump the gun and dunk his head. Some may consider it to be overenthusiastic- but since he was fussing the whole time- the instructor laughed and considered it to be martyrdom. D-R-A-M-A. I went ahead and signed him up for the next round of classes because, let's face it, he needs it. Hoping the weather will hold out so we can go to the pool just to play, and see if he gets over the negative connotation of it all.

Kaely will be joining Chase on the next round of swim lessons too. Not the same class of course, but will be right before him. I feel guilty since we talked about lessons for her for years, but never did it. Now, well, on the bright side she's at least old enough to be coach-able (I hope). We shall see. The lucky girl also has a week of "horse camp" starting next week (I figure my working with horses as a kid was a dream come true, one that I miss!, so why not...) and then she'll be taking dance classes on the weekends too. Anything to keep them busy, because my school schedule is a bit insane, and trying to juggle is still a challenge.

Anyway, I'll leave it with the proofs from our photo shoot a week ago- I wasn't insanely loving the one(s) of all 4 of us, but did like individual ones, soooo... all in all, it was a great investment (gotta love Groupons!). Happy Summertime to All!

Come Out, Come Out, Wherever You Are!

Yeah, I know. Horrible. The time last posted was an eternity ago... I have a million reasons why, but nonetheless, it's bad. So I'll just post some pics and some fun facts...

Starting with, at nearly 17 months now (really???) he is still NOT walking (punk!), just started swim lessons this week, and continues to build a vocabulary of words and sentences that do NOT include "Mom."

He weighed in yesterday at 22 pounds and about 30" tall. He has been trying to break in his stinkin' molars for the past month or more... they are raised, angry, and still not cutting- NOT FUN.

Happy things originate from FOOD or music. He has absolutely been drawn to the guitar, keyboard, and other musical instruments throughout the house. Also- water- on his terms- has been a source of fun. While being submerged hasn't gone over well, he absolutely loved the latest trip to the beach, and after the first swim lesson, has been more intrigued by bathtime!

Everything is an opportunity for trouble. If it's not breaking baby food jars throughout the kitchen, or throwing in towels into the bath, or dumping a bottle of pond water dye all across the back patio, well - then he must be sleeping. I cannot even imagine what the years coming will bring us ;)

A Work in Progress

The last time I posted, I was overwhelmed and trying my best to make light of it all, but geez this kid wears me out!

However, we went to the doctor the other day to address a persistent cough (which appears to be related to a cold/allergies/teething- but his lungs, ears, etc are clear), and to mention the lovely bruises covering his head. Fortunately, after a list of questions about his communication- what words does he say, his socializing- yes he has his issues being clingy, but is he aware of his surroundings and interacts with others, and several other questions that were trying to figure out the root of the behavior. Ultimately, it was confirmed that it seems to be largely related to his frustration in attempts to communicate- and of course catch my attention- and he has discovered the method works. If you consider the first year I spent undivided attention 95% (or more) of the time. Then the past few months I've added in school, volunteering at Winnie, the whole weaning/not weaning process and trying to spend more time with Kaely. So I'm sure although "it's only a few hours" to us- but to him it's been a huge change.

Since we got back from the doctor, and I was reassured of the reasons- with the suggestion to throw him in the pack n' play when he does it to keep him from hurting himself- but he's been so much better. Maybe it's just that I relaxed a bit. Or perhaps because I finally finished that research paper, or I'm trying to talk to him more and go back to sign language (not sure why I was slacking in the first place?). I'm also trying to play more... I used to be so good at doing that, but man, if the days don't just take over sometimes.

Yesterday I helped out over at Winnie at their "Mother & Baby TEA"- which is an educational and support group for new moms (up to 8 weeks of age)... once again, the whole process helped me (selfishly) in feeling good again in what we went through. It also reaffirmed my goals to continue to stride towards a career in health and education- just still haven't decided where I will end up. However, I know in my heart that this is where I need to be.

I wanted to take the time to thank you, thank you for breaking the charger to the camera so I can no longer take pictures (again!).

Thank you for knocking off the original camera that broke in the first place that led to using the current camera that will not work because the battery cannot be charged...

Thank you for breaking the phone that could have at least given me decent pictures as an alternative to the camera. I really had fun trying to send messages with half the keys not working, and the phone continuing to turn off.

Thank you for throwing all of your cups and dishes so food flies across the room, and there is milk all over the carpet.

Thank you for using my hair brush on the dogs.

Thank you for paying attention to all the bad habits we have- and learning how to use things like bottle openers...

Thank you for screaming bloody murder every time I have to change your stinky butt- or try to remove the snot from your nose- I'm sure the neighbors are ready to call backup on us. Oh- but it is reassuring that you will use the suction bulb on your own nose, then proceed to put it in your mouth.

Thank you for getting into your sister's Easter eggs- and eating all the "Robins eggs" in there- getting blue slober all over the living room.

Thank you for continuously banging your head on stuff to get my attention- resulting in bruises covering your forehead, making it look like I am an abusive mommy.

Thank you for being a "boy"- sigh... I love you so much, but I do believe it's going to take an army to survive this childhood. LOL! AHHHHHHH

Camping Fiascos

Ah- Easter weekend camping. Originally I had not realized it'd be Easter weekend when I booked the spot, only that it was during Kae's spring break, and hey! It was available. We headed to Blue Springs State Park, and let the adventure begin.

Since Dave's work schedule was pushing out timeline a bit, we opted to take two cars, so I headed off in advance with hopes to get it all ready before he got off work. The weekend started off pretty smooth considering... the kids were laughing, I got the tent put up without much problem, and even had dinner ready by 5 or 6.

But then things like pre-teen (okay, 7 should not count in that age bracket, but still) attitudes, Chase being confined since he doesn't walk- so I didn't want him crawling in the dirt, having to keep the dogs on lockdown, etc... well, it quickly became a lot of effort!

Even after we survived dinner, started up with the marshmallows, and somehow, Kaely manages to burn herself with the roasting prongs- REALLY??? So big drama there... then bedtime and Chase's lightning bug scenario- which really had us stumped. Hoped to catch the March Madness game (UF) that evening, but no internet available (we're so spoiled) and we were all passed out by 9 anyway.

So we woke up to start a fire and get the water boiling for coffee, when I realized although I had put away all our food in the truck and locked it up, I left the Rubbermaid container of dog food on the picnic table- sealed and about a 18" x 6" container (at least) full of dry food. I couldn't find it the next morning- went nuts trying to go through the tent and truck thinking I must've just forgotten I had put it somewhere. Then though, maybe some jerk came by to mess with us... when eventually, Dave saw it back in the woods a good 20+ ft. from the table it had been on. The lid had been removed in the woods, and the container and measuring cup still intact. What on earth??? I realized after irritation led to concern, it had to have either been a really strong raccoon, or a really quiet bear. Oh crap.

After going to the store to get the dogs food, we were extra careful to put everything away. Although I got hardly any sleep as every sound made me think a bear was going to come knock our tent in. I was a little paranoid.

Then, at Blue Springs, you typically look forward to the water events- but because of the roller coaster in weather, the manatees were all hanging out at the springs, so there was no swimming allowed. Talk about drama and tears over this. Luckily, today (Sunday), Kae and Dave were able to swim in a sectioned off part of the springs since the weather had warmed.

Speaking of weather- did I mention we started off with 2-3 air mattresses- enough for everyone to have their own space- and ended up squeezing all 4 of us (and the dogs at the foot if you include that) onto the mattress... only to have a hole in there somewhere for the next day. That first night the temperatures dropped into the low 40's... I can't remember the last time I've been that cold. Even the little space heater I remembered I bought wasn't enough to warm us all. It was freezing!!!

Ah- and then there's the trains that run adjacent to the park. I saw the memo about that recently- but didn't realize that included all through the night too. Oh my... it was crazy!!!

Anyway- I do love the park, and the Springs... but have decided that the next trip must meet the following:

No dogs with us- or at least another group with us that can take turns hanging at the campsite
Chase MUST be walking. He cannot be contained that long, but I can't have him in the dirt like that
Kaely MUST lose the attitude. I am NOT prepared for this crap at this age. I expect it around 12-13 maybe, not now.
Temperatures need to be stable- free from freezing nights and rain!

Ummm... yeah. So ultimately, looking for a vacation from our vacation now :) LOL. At least I can hope the kids had some fun!

Our Child is a Lightning Bug: A Prelude

Yep, that's right, a freaking lightning bug. Think the movie "Powder" from waaaay back in the day. This is a prelude to our actual camping story, because it's just that strange...

So, Friday night, Kaely, Chase & I are in the tent, trying to get Chase to sleep. He was so exhausted, but insisted on crawling from mattress to mattress, petting the dogs, etc. I figured- eh, whatever- let him wear himself out. Kaely was on her side trying to go to sleep, when I noticed something strange. Seriously- when Chase was crawling, it looked like he had those "Twinkle Toes" shoes on- or a freakin' lightning bug in his pants. I thought something was wrong with my eyes. I had him in his blanket sleeper-thing, so I thought- well, crap- maybe it had to do with that thing. Seriously- I thought maybe Kaely's gel-crayons or something must be glow-in-the-dark. Nope.

So the more he moves around, the more I realize it's not his pants/outfit, and it's not just my eyes...The lights kept twinkling/flashing, not just in his pj pants, but his hands, his feet, etc. I am stunned- and keep nervously laughing about it- at which point Kaely is freaked out and asks me to stop talking about it or she's plugging her ears...

She eventually came over by me and saw it happen too. Chase is laughing the whole time. Dave's outside hanging by the fire, so we wait until he comes in. He thinks we've lost it- until he sees it too. Sure, maybe a lightning bug got caught in his pants (uh huh), but not from his bare hands and feet. This went on for probably an hour until I finally insisted we all fall asleep. I only wish I had gotten video- it was the most bizarre thing ever! I can only assume it was static electricity from him crawling on the tent floor and blankets- but seriously? NUTS!

Headbanging

90's Grunge style?

Nah...

Before Chase was ever born we were told about Dave's tendency as a baby/toddler to bang his head against the bed/walls... I just snickered and shook my head and didn't think much about it after the smart remarks...

Then Chase enters. He's been doing this crap for months now- and I can't, for the life of me, figure out why??? The only conclusion I can draw is the simple "ATTENTION!" factor. No lie, the more I read about random things, the more I feel like I'm starving this child of attention- but just about anyone around us feels the opposite- that I spoil the kid rotten. Well???

So I'm guessing it's an issue of undivided attention he desires?

I sit in my infamous chair at the kitchen bar/island area where my laptop permanently resides. This means Chase will go to one of two places- either to the one end of the kitchen, to the wall where a photo of baby shower pictures lives- and will sit below the photos and (full body motion) bang the back of his head against the wall. I'm just waiting for the stinkin' pictures to come crashing down. That, or of course he comes to the chair/stool that I'm on- and either stands there grabbing at my feet (I usually have them tucked under me), or he'll sit there banging his head against the legs of the chair. WTF?

Or, I'm cooking in the kitchen, so he'll alternate between making sure the pantry door is shut, trying to peek in the cabinets (childproof latch-challenge), or again, will sit against those cabinets- staring up at me, and start banging his head.

Sigh.

Or... in the shower- he'll play in the bathroom and I'll toss water at the (glass door), so then he went for banging the front of his head yesterday- standing there laughing while doing it.

I don't get it! Crazy boy.

Then, reading in my textbook the other day, about relationships and attachment styles. Children (around 1 yr) were tested in being left in a room with the mom, with a stranger and mom, and then alone with the stranger... they observed the responses regarding separation anxiety. This is why in the beginning they recommend always responding to an infant's needs, to help build their security. Anyway- reading it, it makes Chase seem like I have been insensitive and non-responsive to his needs- falling into the "insecurely attached" infant description of "showing less tendency to leave mom's side to explore and becomes severely distressed when (mom) leaves, often crying loudly... UGH! The "securely attached" babies use mom as a safe base for happily exploring the new environment and playing with toys, and when separated from mom, they appear to feel safe, expressed only moderate distress over mom's absence, and seemed confident that mom would return to provide care and protection. I dunno- he's usually okay once I'm gone- but geez!!!!

So... I guess, yes, I am neglectful and starve him of attention. Crap.

Going Solo

Oh please- this is nothing as serious as it seems it may start off to be... but honestly? I have just remembered why I was so disillusioned after having Kaely, thinking this whole "having a kid" thing isn't so hard.

Dave went out of town yesterday just for the evening for work, and Kaely is camping this weekend with her dad and grandparents. After stressing all morning about an exam for school, Chase woke up from his nap, and it was just us. No running to get Kaely from school, no worrying about making dinner (ok, I was planning on leftovers, but our wonderful neighbors brought over a plate for dinner for us), not worrying about being the homework police at the same time as chasing after Chase... the list goes on.

Honestly- it sounds horrible- but it was awesome! Just for the evening- don't get me wrong, I wouldn't change my family for anything, I LOVE being a mom and a wife, and Kaely and Dave have both saved my life a million times over in their own individual ways. But- I really did realize how much easier it was when it was "just me" and one baby. Chase wasn't as cranky trying to capture my attention, I actually got to the point I got to watch a movie, have a glass of wine, read part of my book for FUN, and watch "my show" last night- and even stayed up past 11pm- WHAT???

Sigh... I think it just goes into play about caregiver burnout, and as rewarding as it is to be able to be home and take care of everyone- a one-day "Mommy-cation" is not a bad idea. I highly recommend it :)

Monkey See, Monkey Do

I knew these days were coming, but it's fun to watch nevertheless...

Kaely plays on our bed, and decides to be "funny" and slide down head first to get off the bed. Chase follows suit a minute later (yes, I was there to catch him). Kaely grabs a hairbrush and sits down to brush her hair, Chase books it over to the drawer in the bathroom where my brushes and hair tools are. We answer the cell to chat with Dad, Chase grabs his toy phones, the remote controls, or my phone and subsequently answers "Hello" (imagine the voice of Astro from the Jetsons). Kaely eats an apple whole (without cutting into slices), so as soon as she leaves it sitting there, he snatches it and proceeds to tear into it.

I can only imagine what other behaviors we're going to witness- more often than not it's a reminder to censor our words and actions. What's cute in a toddler is often horrible in a 3-4 year old. Time is flying too fast!

Chase's Breastaurant

That's right. For the past 1 year, 2 months, 2 weeks, and 3 days, my days have revolved around feeding this kid. So, for the past month or two I've been working on cutting him off- moving towards exclusively feeding him 'people' (ha!) food and attempting cows milk. If you've noticed through the infrequent postings and content of the ones I have posted, he's been more than cranky and discontent lately. I keep wondering what's wrong with him, is he sick, etc. It's so stressful.

Well, this weekend I had a certification class in Lactation Education. I plan on specializing in the mother-baby field with my degree in Health Education & Behavior, and so I thought this to be an essential component to the goal. I have been absolutely blown away by how much I did not know. Even as a second time mom, breastfeeding with both, even with the NICU fiascos, and even with what I've seen in my time in nursing school- I knew such a limited amount- even for my own experiences.

Anyhow- point is- towards the end of class, we reached the topic of "Weaning"- which of course I perked up to see what all I could learn in this. What I didn't expect to see was this slide that stated:

Increased night waking

A new attachment to an object
Withdrawal

Well... crap. I've been attributing these "issues" to everything from teething, illness, or just being downright spoiled- as I'm reminded by everyone that he needs me to spend less time with him so he's not so 'spoiled.'

But you know what? He's been a high-needs child since day 1 (and before), and my attempting to cut off his feedings- combined with the volunteer work that means leaving him for a few hours once a week, plus I've taken Kaely's field trip, had classes, and so on. So going from being with him 24/7, feeding him 3-6 times a day- to... this? Yeah... he might be on the little distressed side. This is crazy!

So, I have reconsidered the urgency of doing this- and haven't decided a good reason to aside from feeling awkward about other people's judgments- but I think I have a big *&*#@ it attitude about all that anymore anyway. We'll see how it goes- day by day is all I ask.

It has inspired me to start a new page- which, in good humor will be titled "Chase's Breastaurant"- where I will post a bunch of the facts, tips, and overall good smiles about breastfeeding- a neutral, nonjudgmental zone that I hope can help at least one mom and baby :)

Boys and Illness

Ah... it's heartbreaking to see your little one feeling under the weather. Fortunately, most of Chase's 14+ months have been free of any type of cold, flu, illness- with the exception of his surgery and teething issues. However, when the big kid (aka, Dad) got sick last week, the feeling of how many needy children living in the house seemed to jump by a few heads. Somehow I went from enjoying at least 6 hours of sleep a night, and getting in study time or reading time- to being lucky if I can sleep in 2 hour stretches and get anything done at all.

I could write a novel on men and being big babies when they are sick- but... I'll refrain for today.

But the little man? Cousin Nathan apparently ended up with a fever early this week- we hadn't seen him since last Friday, so I didn't think much of it. Then Wednesday I noticed Chase was burning up and just being clingy and needy- so, armed with Tylenol and dropping everything to try to comfort him, the battle began. I was so worried (this is really the first time he's run a fever other than immediately following a vaccination), so I kept checking his temperature- eventually waking him up- big mistake- and therefore he spent the night in our bed. Tossing and turning and insisting on sleeping on me- which made me sleep on my back (I hate sleeping on my back)- he sleeps in the weirdest positions- insisting on laying in the nook of my neck (essentially crushing my throat, making it difficult to breathe), or when I decided to flip over anyway, he laid face down in my hair, until I finally decided that wasn't going to work. He wasn't satisfied with just knowing I was there- it was like every part of him had to be touching me to reassure him that I was there. Sigh...

So two nights in a row of no sleep, adding in a bad cough last night to make me worry, and then I had fasting blood work this morning (when my blood sugar drops, I get mean and cranky)... just no fun! But.... fortunately, after a 3 hour nap this morning, he's been looking much better, and fingers are crossed we're over this hump. This is why daycare terrifies me- the illnesses spread like wildfire, and between worry and lack of sleep- the toll takes the whole family off track.

Things That Boggle My Mind

This is going to be an ever-growing list I fear... but the main thing that initiated my rant, is school.

Here's the deal- I'm trying to plan ahead, and budget tuition, books, etc. for the rest of the semesters before I graduate, and am trying to wrap my head around the concept of internships. Not only are you not paid for internships, and you have to coordinate childcare for a full-time schedule with zero income, but you also have to pay the school for the credit hours that an internship is. To top it off, they consider an internship 15 credit hours- equivalent to approximately $3430 in tuition alone- that's based on this school year, not even next. Seriously? UGH. I keep wondering- soooooo... who gets the money for it then? Is it the place I intern at that gets free work done, and the school just sits back and checks in once a month?

Higher education at it's finest.

Don't get me wrong- I am ALL for education, I LOVE school (most days), and pretty much plan on always pursuing additional learning opportunities on some level. But... sheesh! It's such a business, and it's a wonder half of America is broke. I mean- once you finally get your degree, hold your breath and pray for a job, then you get to pay back all those loans to cover trying to live as you fork over any pennies you can find to go work for free somewhere. Go figure.

Okay, I'm done for the moment- there are plenty of other things that boggle my mind, but I'll leave it for another day :)

Things that make me laugh though? Kaely's friend came over yesterday to play for a bit... as he was getting ready to leave he was talking about how his mom gets mad sometimes- and he leans in close to whisper conspiratorially, "she got so mad at (his older sister), that she even said the "F" word (insert the gasp), and then she threw a chair!" - buwahahha! I had to appreciate this- especially because the pressure to be the 'perfect' (ha!) mom is overwhelming at times- good to know there are other 'full of character' moms out there too :) LOVE IT!

What Makes Having a School-Aged Child Worthwhile

Aside from the sheer joy of having them of course... the good field trips! I mean, this is the third year of field trips, and suffering through some of the lame ones (sorry), this one to Disney's Animal Kingdom made it all worthwhile. Best yet, being a chaperone would've been cool- but turns out more than half the class' parents volunteered, so at the end of the day I didn't even have any kids to watch except Kaely. SWEET! It was a nice change to be able to hang with her one-on-one (well, minus all the other kids around), and just have fun :)

Daily Dreaming

On a completely off the topic kind of post today, a little email showed up in my inbox about this contest to Rioja, Spain. What can I say? A dreamer at heart, the past year or two of Chase-related chaos has pushed the dreamer to the more pragmatic, practical side, and been in hiding. So what if the responsibilities of being a parent, spouse, student, and so on needs to take priority? I must say the need to daydream has to be a priority too. How easy is it to fall into the mundane, routine, and well? Boring.

So... I share with you my lofty dream list of what we could do if we won a trip to Spain...

For one, I'd love to take another stab at a romantic honeymoon (sorry babe, but we both know it's true!). Work is important, but sometimes, you just gotta seize the moment and live for today! We've talked about the trips to play in the wineries and explore food. I would LOVE to take cooking classes in another country- I can almost taste the artichokes, lamb stew and pears... YUM.If I had no responsibilities for a few days, I think I'd explore my bucket list- including things like paragliding, bungee jumping or riding in a hot air balloon. Or...explore the countryside on horseback, go hiking, or canoeing in the mountains.

I also had to laugh at the imagery of engaging in a "Wine War"- where you soak opponents with wine. This is soooo much better than wrestling in jello! It's an event held annually called “La Batalla del Vino."

Can you believe how many wines originate from the Rioja region? I only discovered the wine about 8 years ago- always been a favorite- but holy cow! Here is a list that goes on for days and the reviews to accompany them. WINE

If only in a dream...

Or.... we have the possibility of a trip to Monterey County California full of wine tastings, fine dining, and exploring wine country here in our own backyard. How often do I walk up and down the wine aisles, only to select a wine from Monterey? Delicious! Again, I never imagined there were so many varieties out there though, Robert Mondavi and La Crema being a couple of my favorite wineries. The full list is here.

I feel like I've only lived through those reality tv shows, like The Bachelor, when they always seem to take the 'dream dates' to wine country, complete with private tastings and a picnic. Man, wouldn't that be awesome? I would love to just relax- inch by inch- listen to jazz, walk along the fields, and remember that I was once just a woman with a lot of artistic desires... before reality hit. :)

Then, there's Austria. Sigh... If I knew how complicated life would be, when I had the chance 9 years ago when I flew to Germany, I would've taken the time to explore more. Gone to Austria, Amsterdam, Italy, France, and so on... Hindsight? When I was over in Europe, I felt like I was "home." The culture, the sights, the smells, the richness of everything there... it was amazing, overwhelming, and opened my eyes to a lot of what I want for myself and my children. For instance- cooking, eating for the sheer joy of it- not just necessity- trying to have meals together, walk more, explore our roots and foundations... So much to be learned. Danube, Austria is just one of many places there that have just that. Swing over to Vienna, and let me tell you- I know that between coffee, wine, bread, and cheese- I may just have found heaven. Exploring the mountains and waterways- enjoying the journey as much as the destination... it's beyond amazing. The wines we don't get to try too much here, but when I used to enjoy the sweet, white wines, the Ice Wines and Reislings... couldn't go wrong with one from here. The Austrian wine list goes on and on!

The last afternoon dream I got to squeeze in was to South Africa... full of Shiraz, Cabernet, and Merlots- which seem to find their way into our home more often than not. This trip is to Stellenbosch, South Africa and holy cow- the thought of spending my days having wine-paired meals while taking in the vast landscapes?? It's not too far from Cape Town and the coast- which is something to be seen outside of the movies. We would have to bring our hiking boots, because to explore on foot has got to be the way to go. There is something to be said about escaping the bustle of big cities full of tourist attractions, and just taking in the laid back atmosphere of nature and those embracing it. I know the chances are slim- but if you don't have your dreams, you aren't truly living- and if for nothing else- our kids need to know that anything is possible! Savor every moment, and do things for the love of it.
