The lure of expanding the mind

Someone once told me that babies who had difficult births had a high percentage rate of becoming teachers and nurses. I don’t know if there is any statistical data behind this, but I had to laugh because I was a difficult birth, and so was my daughter. I teach part-time at a local college and my little one definitely shows the signs of a teacher, so there may be some truth to it.

When asked as a child what I wanted to be when I grew up, teacher was not on the list–Heck! Neither was graphic designer or copywriter. I never expected to be a teacher. I fell into the role.

Ignore Everybody and 39 Other Keys to Creativity caught my eye because of its simplicity. Its cover displayed on a hand holding a business card with a simple cartoon drawn on it of a man holding a hatchet and staring at you, the would-be reader.

Hugh MacLeod is best known for his cartoons drawn on the back of business cards. In his book Ignore Everybody, MacLeod delivers a dose of tough love as he educates on what it is to work in the real world. He directs readers to rethink their current creative paths. To reevaluate what we were lead to believe in college, or what we have managed to fool ourselves into believing as working adults.

My hubby came across a site called Ads Museum that has a database of old to modern ads from print, video, radio — a whole slew of things. I’ve seen some that run as far back as 1822, and there are probably some even later than that.

Ain’t nothin’ like old school

I like to look at old ads because, quite frankly, most of the new ones aren’t that interesting. I some times get the feeling that today’s ads are trying too hard.

So this Friday’s Fearsome Five, I wanted to highlight some of the items I found at the Ads Museum.

Are you in control of your destiny? Or is the rest of the world around you?

Driving down the interstate the other day, I was a little more alert than usual because there was fresh rain on the road. The family was relaxing, having a good time as we headed to one of the local bowling alleys for our once a week trivia night (of which we kill, by the way) with our friends.
