Men are from Mars, women are from Venus. According to the book, men and women are two completely different beings who communicate differently and see the world and situations in different lights. Although some of you may disagree, there are of course situations where guys just get things wrong which end up with the women being unhappy. And before I get in trouble for so-called male bashing, it happens vice versa too.

But as favour to many sisters out there, lets just try and set the guys straight first. Women are not as complex as you think, you know. All you have to do is please us and we`ll be content. And trust me when I say, if we`re happy, you`re happy.

It’s not uncommon for matches to be made across continents these days, though not without a fair amount of emails and phone calls in between.

Pay attention to the kinds of searches allowed by each site; if they only allow for searches by state and not by city, you’ll have to work harder to find someone close to you. When it comes to putting together an online profile, many people make the easy mistake of not paying enough attention to their headline. It’s just a little blurb, right? Wrong. Other than your photo, the headline might be the most important piece of your profile.

Think of going to a movie. You’re there at the theatre, looking over the various titles. Right, so nobody just wanders up to the theatre and picks a movie anymore, but let’s just go with it this time, OK? Anyhow, so you’re there reading the movie titles, and some are terrible, such as Win a Date With Tad Hamilton. Ack! Besides just seeming really awkward, it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense (and it’s a bad movie, just speaking out of context).

Then, you come across a title like Napoleon Dynamite. You’re instantly intrigued – that sounds like some guy’s name, but what kind of guy? So you’ve picked an online dating service, and are wondering about the best way to go about using it. Well, you’re in luck, because I’m going to tell you the secret methods to finding true love. Okay, maybe some of these are less than secret. In fact, a lot of them are now recognized as essential by those “in the know”.

The most important part of online dating is your profile. Even if you are hoping to be proactive and instigate most of the communicating yourself, those you email/wink/nod at will almost certainly use your profile as a way to judge their response. As such, there are a few rules to profile-making:

1.Don’t Rush It

The idea of posting your photo on an internet site – for all the world to see – is for some people a scary thought. However, it is extremely difficult to be successful in online dating without one. The reasons for this are many, some more obvious than others.

First off, think about your profile without a picture. Put yourself in another person’s shoes as they come upon said profile. Does the information about your body type, habits, and hobbies seem like it would make anyone curious enough to contact you?

Remember that some of people don’t fully trust the internet. The main reason for this is that it allows for personal contact, but does so only by way of text. There’s none of the subtle nuances of a face to face meeting or even a phone conversation. Without a picture on your profile, you are just another bunch of letters on the screen. With a picture, you suddenly have an identity.

If you don’t have a paid membership, you probably will be limited to using “winks” or “smiles” or something similar. These really limit your ability to pique a member’s interest… remember that some of these people get great numbers of contacts, so you don't want to have to rely on your strong profile to snag them.

Email is preferred, because it allows you a little more control. What you’re doing with not only your first but all subsequent emails is, well, flirting. Yep, I just heard a bunch of you go Ack! I can't flirt! I'm too shy. True, and this is the toughest part of online dating, similar to walking up to someone on the street and sparking up that conversation.

But the anonymity of being online is really quite empowering, and you can get over a lot of the initial awkwardness quickly. So how do you write that first email? Much of the principles of profile-writing apply to email, such as staying positive, being honest, and paying close attention to spelling and grammar. But there are a couple of other things that can help.

Firstly, compliment or make reference to some thing or things you found interesting in the person’s profile. I wouldn't suggest telling them you think they're “hot” or “beautiful”… maybe that you liked their smile or their sweater (basic flirting tips, folks). It’s best to stay away from commenting on the picture at all, and find something that they said in their self-description.

Making the transition from hiding behind a computer screen to actually getting out there and meeting your online date in person can be a scary thing. But remember, the person on the other side of the table is just as anxious, excited and self-conscious as you. And there are things you can do to make this first “real” meeting more comfortable.

First, a quick comment about the “safety” issue. This article gives hints for how to protect yourself, but don’t take that to mean that you need to be overly cautious. Yes, the anonymity of the internet means it has it’s share of whackos. But as long as you follow your common sense, you have nothing to worry about. Remember, fear can be a prison.

Probably the first thing to remember is not to give away too much personal information too quickly. If you’re emailing/messaging someone and they ask for things like addresses and phone numbers right away, it might be a sign of them having less-than-good intentions. If you start emailing outside of the dating service, use a public email like Yahoo or Hotmail to keep your private email, uh, private.

Take your time before meeting in person. Communicate online for as long as you need to figure out whether he or she is being truthful, and whether he or she is really interesting enough for you to go through all the bother of scheduling a date.

Internet dating sites are overflowing with eligible singles, all vying for the same attention, the competition can be fierce. To compete with all those personal ads, you need to write a profile that stands out from the rest, captures the readers attention, and makes them want to respond to you. If not, you might miss out on meeting someone who is a really good match.

While searching online personals I can across quite a few profile that didn't impress me much. I listed a few of them below, just to give you an idea of "What Not To Do" when it comes time to write your own dating profile.
