Cape Girardeau resident Martha Hamilton, members of her family and the community will celebrate this weekend the birthday of her sister Elizabeth Gill, who has been missing more than four decades.

Hamilton and city officials are inviting the community to honor Gill on Saturday at Old St. Vincent's Church, where they'll declare Aug. 21 -- Gill's birthday -- Elizabeth Ann Gill Day.

Gill, the youngest of 10 siblings, went missing from her home June 13, 1965, when she was 2 years old. She was last seen playing in her yard on Lorimier Street.

"We're certainly willing to do anything we can do to at least show our support," said Cape Girardeau City Council member Loretta Schneider, who will present a proclamation at the event at 10 a.m.

A brief ceremony, to include a balloon launch, will follow the reading of the proclamation.

The event comes two months after the family and hundreds of community members gathered for a candlelight vigil at the former Mississippi River bridge site.

"This proclamation supports Cape Girardeau's commitment to Missouri's missing children while underscoring the need for enhanced communication, safeguards and the necessity of the crucial 48-hour intervention after a child's disappearance," Hamilton said.

In June, Hamilton said investigators were pursuing a lead out of the northeast part of the country.
"They've progressed a lot from that," she said Tuesday. "We've located some people that would possibly be persons of interest. ... They were in the area at the time."

The FBI and Cape Girardeau police will be conducting interviews with those people.

Saturday's gathering is sponsored by Missouri Missing, a not-for-profit organization in Jefferson City that helps raise awareness about missing children and adults.

"I think it's so important to the family. They are taking it one step at a time and are so hopeful they will find her," Schneider said.

OAKLAND -- When Jaycee Dugard was rescued nearly a year ago from a home in unincorporated Antioch, Sharon Nemeth Murch leapt out of bed and told her husband that they had to paint the kitchen before her daughter, Michaela Garecht, missing for 22 years, came home.

She so strongly believed that Dugard's captors had her daughter that she began planning Michaela's homecoming.

Mike Misheloff and his wife, Madelyne, have kept the same phone number from 1989 because they know it's the one their daughter, Ilene, knew as a child. They don't use the number, but when it rings, Mike Misheloff grabs the phone and demands to know who is on the other end. It could be his daughter, he said. The couple have refused to move from their Dublin home because that is the place Ilene knows.

When Ronald Hughes talks about the August 2009 disappearance of his son, Hasanni Campbell, he says he is "hopeful" the boy will be found. He talks optimistically about two reported sightings of the boy who disappeared when he was 5 years old, both of which turned out to be false leads.

Every year, 800,000 children younger than 18 are reported missing, an average of about 2,200 every day, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in Alexandria, Va. Of the children who are eventually found, about 200,000 were taken by family members, while about 58,000 were abducted by someone outside the family, the organization reports. The whereabouts of the

remainder of the children are uncertain.
Still, parents, grandparents, friends and community members hold out hope that their missing child will be brought home someday. And someday soon.

Hasanni goes missing

"My thoughts are that (Hasanni) was kidnapped and I still have hope of finding him. I know somebody knows something," said Pamela Clarke, the boy's grandmother, who lives in San Francisco. In the past year, there have been at least a dozen searches for the boy, all of which turned up empty.

Hasanni was reported missing on the afternoon of Aug. 10, 2009, by his then-foster father Louis Ross. Ross, now 39, told Oakland police he left the child alone in a back driveway when he went to the front of Shuz of Rockridge on College Avenue in Oakland to alert his girlfriend, Jennifer Campbell, the boy's aunt and then-foster mother, that he had arrived to drop off Hasanni and the boy's 1-year-old sister.

Ross told police that when he returned, Hasanni, who was born with cerebral palsy and wore braces on his feet, was gone from the driveway where Ross had parked his 2002 BMW. No one in the neighborhood who was interviewed by police said they saw the boy. Police said it would have been nearly impossible for him to run off, considering the disability. Ross later told authorities the child was left in the car, not outside the car, according to court records.

About three weeks after the boy was reported missing, Ross and Campbell were arrested on suspicion of murder. They were released three days later because Alameda County prosecutors said they did not have enough evidence to file charges. Outside Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, Ross pledged, "As long as I have got breath in my body, we will search for Hasanni." Five months later, the couple moved from their rented Fremont home.

Investigation
Sources say the couple, who had a baby girl in November, are no longer together. Campbell is reportedly living in Arizona, while Ross is in Maryland, where he has relatives.

Attempts to locate them were unsuccessful.

For many weeks, the police probe was focused on the two as investigators recovered a pair of latex gloves, eight DNA swabs and four fingerprint lifts from Ross' BMW. A search warrant affidavit shows that police were looking for a martial arts sword in the home.

There were many reasons police said they pointed to Ross, primarily, as a suspect. Ten days before Hasanni was reported missing, he sent a text message to Jennifer Campbell threatening to leave the child alone on a BART platform, police said.

Ross texted Campbell: "This is (expletive) over, I will watch her (the boy's 1-year-old sister) but he (Hasanni) will be out on the BART and its your responsibility to hey (sic) him so (expletive) you."

Authorities also confirmed that Ross failed a polygraph test given by the FBI a few days after the boy was reported missing. Campbell, 30, did not take the test because she was six months pregnant at the time and told authorities she was worried the test could harm her unborn baby.

A year later
The case is unsolved. The media attention on the case, rampant in the first months, has faded and police don't talk about or promote the case, other than to say the investigation remains open.

A group of people who have continued to search for the boy under the guidance of the nonprofit group Citizens for the Lost Society are meeting with Tom Rogers, chief deputy district attorney, on Tuesday to discuss how the group can better use their resources to continue to search for the boy. Rogers declined to comment on the case, saying, "I can't talk about an active investigation."
However, he did say, "There are still things that Oakland police are checking." Sources close to the case said police reinterviewed Ross in the spring and police plan to conduct another search for the boy in the next few months.

In the meantime, Hughes, the boy's father, who has spent time in prison and admits he and the boy's mother had problems and needed help with the children, would also like to talk to Ross.
"They never called and said, 'I apologize.' They never stopped by and gave me a hug. I guess in time. If it's fear, then it's fear," Hughes said.

Hughes, 32, who is separated from Hasanni's biological mother, said he would forgive Ross if the man knew something about the disappearance.

"I don't hold nothing against (him)," he said. "I would just like to know where the boy is at."
Sherri-Lyn Miller, 41, of San Leandro, would also like to know Hasanni's whereabouts.
"Somebody needs to care enough to look for him," said Miller, who cofounded the Citizens for the Lost Society, launched in response to Hasanni's disappearance.

"He was a foster child and a ward of the state, which makes him every citizen in the state's responsibility."

Miller, who owns a San Leandro print shop, said she has produced at least 150 T-shirts with the boy's image on them, and copied at least 50,000 missing-person fliers, spending thousands of dollars of her own money.

"It's something that needs to be done, so we make the time to get it done," said Miller, who also helped with the April 2009 search for 8-year-old Sandra Cantu, whose body was found in a suitcase in an irrigation pond a few miles from her Tracy home.

In Hasanni's case, Miller said she does not believe the boy is alive, but won't speculate on what happened to him.

"I think the people involved know something and one day it's going to eat at them so much they are going to come forward. No one can carry that around for the rest of their life," she said.

Seeking closure
Polly Franks, founder of the Franks Foundation in Richmond, Va., and a longtime child safety advocate, said not having closure is one of the toughest things for parents of missing children.
"At some point, they realize they have to go on with their lives, but they always leave that porch light in their hearts," she said. Though it's rare, Franks acknowledged, sometimes children missing for more than a year are found.

"Miracles do happen. They do happen," she said.

Murch, 56, of Castro Valley, was hoping for a miracle the day Dugard was found in Antioch, 18 years after she disappeared in South Lake Tahoe. Dugard was 11 when she was abducted from a school bus stop near her home. Nancy and Phillip Garrido, the couple accused of holding Dugard captive, are awaiting trial in El Dorado County.

"I was in bed. It was 5 o'clock in the morning and my husband came in and whispered to me, 'Do you remember Jaycee Dugard? She was just found alive and well in Antioch.' In my mind there was always a connection between Michaela and Jaycee," Murch said. "I honestly just leapt up and told my husband, 'You have to paint the kitchen before Michaela comes home.' I just honestly believed that with Jaycee being found that Michaela would come home "... and maybe she will."

Mike Misheloff, 66, said when Dugard was found, he, too, became hopeful.

"I thought it was wonderful," he said. "She had been gone for 18 years and if she could be found, Ilene could be found, too. That was my reaction and still is my reaction."

The longtime engineer and his wife still hold a walk each January on the path that Illene took the day she went missing.

"She's never far from my mind," he said.

The State of California canceled the Amber Alert wednesday afternoon (06-09-10) after the suspect vehicle was found in the San Diego area. The girl and the suspect have not been found at this time.

The State of California issued the Amber Alert Wednesday (06-09) after the girl was reportedly abducted in Overland Park, Kansas on Thursday (06-03). They are believed to be in the Orange County, California area based on cell phone and credit card use. It is believed that the suspect fled with the girl to avoid prosecution in Kansas.

Jordan McKenzie Stuart, a white female, 16 years old, 5' 5", 120 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes.

The suspect is Patrick Porter, a white male, 5' 8" , 39 years old weighing 210 pounds with short brown hair and blue eyes. He has a salt-and-pepper goatee.

The suspect vehicle is a white 2003 Ford Expedition with Kansas University specialty license plate 19450.
