House GOP Leader 16,000 IRS Agents For Health Care

(Washington, DC) -- The healthcare plan signed yesterday by President Obama includes financial penalties for not having health insurance, including what the bill calls a "penalty included with a taxpayer's return."

The "Washington Examiner" reports an analysis by the Joint Economic Committee and the House Ways & Means Committee minority staff estimates more than 16,000 new IRS personnel will be needed to collect, examine and audit new tax information as mandated in the bill.

Supporters of the plan call talk about IRS enforcement a "myth," but critics call the new tax mandates and penalties the greatest expansion of the Internal Revenue Service since World War Two.

California Republican Brian Bilbray, who serves on the House Government & Oversight Committee, says the IRS will be empowered to seize tax refunds from those not complying with the new rules.

Coffee Party USA holds ‘Coffee Houses’ across the U.S.

Coffee Party USA, a new grassroots effort that has captured the attention of the nation, held community events across the country Saturday as part of National Coffee House Day. Approximately 392 events were held – in real coffee houses, community member homes and online. Coffee Party USA founder Annabel Park reacted to the day’s events, “We are really pleased and encouraged by the turnout. It proves that Americans really do want to help fix America’s troubled Democracy.”

Early feedback from Coffee Party USA community members detail events that went far beyond even their expectations. Thousands of people have reported attending events, some traveling for over two hours just to engage in coffee and civil conversation. Member discussions covered a wide range of topics, with three of the recurring themes being health care reform, the current American economy and job troubles and accountability from Washington and elected officials.

A surprise for Coffee Party USA came in some of the attendees at the actual events. It was an incredibly politically diverse group that saw current and former politicians, as well as current members of the Tea Party. One “Coffee House” organizer commented on a Tea Party member’s attendance at her meeting, “A few individuals did not want him to stay, but the group collectively gathered around this man's right to be there and share his feelings. Very powerful moment.”

The next step for Coffee Party USA is to analyze the feedback from these “Coffee Houses” to help members choose which issues to support. These decisions will be made solely on community discussion, further emphasizing Coffee Party USA’s “bottom-up” structure. The National Coffee Summit will be held on March 27th, when Coffee Party USA will help local communities form plans for contacting and discussing the issues with their Congressional representatives.

Tea Party Patriots and FreedomWorks will have volunteers stationed at the bus drop off at the west lawn. (Maryland Ave. and 3rd Street SW) Our "meetup" location will be at the East Lawn of the Capitol (East Capitol Circle, same side of the Capitol as the Supreme Court Building). We will give you the Representatives' information, room numbers etc. and give you helpful hints on lobbying. Volunteers will also be handing out information at the Cannon Building location. We do have a bullhorn.

Things to do before and during The Surge.
1. Dress in normal clothes this is about country not organizations and it presents a more professional appearance.

2. If you have a Democrat Representative go to their office and ask to speak to them. If unavailable ask when they will return. If longer than an hour ask to speak to their Chief of Staff. You do not want to talk to the receptionist. If they try to brush you off because you are not from their district then explain to them that the vote they will be casting will affect all citizens of this country and therefore you should be heard.

3. Begin calling at 9:00am! If you are there and standing in line to get into the one of the buildings begin making phone calls to congressmen. Keep calling while you are walking from one office to the other. If you are not going to attend please begin calling at 9:00am and continue calling until 12:00 noon. Wait one hour and begin calling once again until 5:30pm.

4. Write your thoughts down. Keep it personal as to why you do not want them to vote for the bill. When you speak to them it is okay to show passion and feelings but be respectful. Be assertive and state your case. Try to spend thirty minutes in each office if possible. Think of alternatives that you would like to see.

5. If you are not going please call your local talk radio shows. Tell them what is happening. Get them talking about it. A few calls about this will turn the show to The Surge.

6.You do not need to bring signs. This is not a rally or a protest. It is a surge of patriots from all groups, our goal is to make this personal.

Subversives Must Register in South Carolina « Skylla2012's Blog

There is quite a lot, of buzz, on the internet about a South Carolina law, that requires subversives to register with the state. Many in the militia, patriot, and Tea Party, movements are upset about it. It is time to calm down and take a deep breath.

South Carolina’s SUBVERSIVE ACTIVITIES REGISTRATION ACT has been on the books, as best as I can tell, since 1976, and maybe older. The reason that it has gotten attention is that there is a bill to repeal it.

That Bill is, Bill 4654, titled, TO REPEAL CHAPTER 29 OF TITLE 23, CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, RELATING TO THE "SUBVERSIVE ACTIVITIES REGISTRATION ACT".

The Subversive Activities Registration Act isn’t all that scary really. It, clearly, states who it is directed toward.

"Subversive organization" means every corporation, society, association, camp, group, bund, political party, assembly, body or organization, composed of two or more persons, which directly or indirectly advocates, advises, teaches or practices the duty, necessity or propriety of controlling, conducting, seizing or overthrowing the government of the United States, of this State or of any political subdivision thereof by force or violence or other unlawful means;

It goes on, for three paragraphs, to define the subversive organizations. It also states that it should not violate the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. The law also protects everyday, normal, Americans.

The terms of this chapter do not apply to any labor union or religious, fraternal or patriotic organization, society or association, or their members, whose objectives and aims do not contemplate the overthrow of the government of the United States, of this State or of any political subdivision thereof by force or violence or other unlawful means.

In reality, the fear, and hype, on the net, is much ado about nothing. If you are afraid of the South Carolina’s , Subversive Registration Act, relax, the State is working to repeal it. Hopefully, you have clicked the, above, links, and looked for yourself. South Carolina, is in fact, repealing the law.

But, I say, not so fast!

Wait a minute here; we do have subversive organizations to apply this law to. The subversive minions are in Washington D. C.. I know, you want to snicker here.

One of the greatest threats to our national sovereignty is the the Transatlantic Policy Network. It was founded, in 1992, and is working to merge the United States of America into the European Union. Click the link; I am not making this up.

The whole purpose of TPN is to standardize American laws to those of the EU. TPN has, currently, five Senators, and forty eight, members of the House of Representatives, working to this end.

A little aside here; Do you still think there is, a real difference, between the Republicans, and Democrats?

Google: We Are Not Pulling Buzz From Gmail - Reviews by PC Magazine

Google on Friday denied that it planned to remove its Buzz social networking program from Gmail, but said it is considering a standalone version.

"No, we're not planning to remove Buzz from Gmail," a Google spokeswoman said via e-mail. "Among some of the features we're considering is building a standalone Buzz experience in addition to the one in Gmail at some point in the future."

A Google executive told a blogger at this week's TED conference that there was interest in Buzz without Gmail, prompting rumors that the search engine giant would separate the services.

Earlier today, Google did tweak a few security features within Buzz, making warnings about what information is shared more prominent and facilitating the ability to block certain users from seeing your updates.

Google unveiled Buzz on Tuesday. Users can add a "news feed" to their Gmail accounts that follows updates friends make on sites like Flickr, Picasa, YouTube, or Twitter. A mobile component allows people to update their locations via Buzz and search for buzzed about locations in the area.

Opening this weekend in NYC, filmmaker-turned-street artist, Mr. Brainwash's newest exhibition "Icons" features his paint-splattered portraits of famous fashion designers, musicians and other figures (including Campbell's soup-labeled spraycans and a Superman-Obama) in a 15,000-square-foot warehouse.

The controversial eccentric is known as much for his over-the-top antics as he is for his artwork, splashing onto the scene in L.A. by relentlessly documenting fellow street artists Shepard Fairey and Banksy. The latter recently featured Brainwash in his own film "Exit Through the Gift Shop" and says "Mr. Brainwash is a force of nature, he's a phenomenon. And I don't mean that in a good way."

Known formally as Thierry Guetta, the French provocateur claims to use Krazy Glue to attach his art to public walls, in an act that he says is about forcing people who don't like art to view it anyway.

Mr. Brainwash attempted to keep the location of the show a secret until its opening on 14 February 2010 (where he will hand out signed prints to the first 300 people), but word already leaked of the Meatpacking District spot. For more information on the exact address, stay tuned to his website.

Marvel Comics Draws Fire For Accurately Depicting Dangers Of Tea Party Movement - Crooks and Liars

When I was a kid I had a huge comic book collection. I don't collect comics any more, but I'm going to hit the stores looking for Captain America issue #602:

Since 1941, Captain America has been one of the most popular comic book characters around. The fictional super-patriot fought Nazis during World War II, took on those who burned the American flag during the Vietnam era, and raked in hundreds of millions of dollars for Marvel Comics along the way. Now, the appearance that he is taking on the Tea Party Movement in a storyline about investigating white supremacists has forced Marvel to apologize for the comic hero.

Issue 602 of the comic features Captain America investigating a right-wing anti-government militia group called "the Watchdogs". Hoping to infiltrate the group, Captain America and his African-American sidekick The Falcon observe an anti-tax protest from a rooftop. The protestors depicted are all white and carry signs adorned with slogans almost identical to those seen today in Tea Party rallies like "tea bag libs before they tea bag you" and "stop the socialists."

The Falcon mentions that the gathering appears to be "some kind of anti-tax protest" and notes that "this whole 'hate the government' vibe isn't limited to the Watchdogs." He then tells Captain America that he doesn't think their plan will work because "I don't exactly see a black man from Harlem fitting in with a bunch of angry white folks." Captain America then explains that his plan entails sending The Falcon in among the group posing as an IRS agent under the thinking that a black government official will most certainly spark their anger. The article goes on to say that the teabaggers were outraged by the depiction, and Marvel has since apologized saying they did not intentionally target the group. I'm not sure why they apologized, as Captain America has always fought against the enemies of the United States.

As the winter Olympics begin, the Department of Homeland Security has disclosed that it will be monitoring the comments and posts on websites and social media like Twitter for information on possible terror threats. Among the sites listed in a privacy impact statement filed Friday afternoon by DHS are the Drudge Report, the Huffington Post, Twitter, Google and this web site, the Blotter.

Here are some tips that help you use Google Buzz in new, interesting ways.

1. Send direct messages.

If you'd like to send a private message to someone, type @ and use Gmail's autocomplete feature to find the email address of your contact. After typing the message, make sure the private option is selected, click on "Post to other groups" and create an empty group. You could call it "No one", "Empty group" etc. Now you can send your message.

When you send a private message, Google Buzz lets you select one or more groups that will receive message, but you can also include the contacts in your message.

2. Disable email notifications.

When someone replies to one of your Google Buzz messages, Google sends an email notification to your Gmail account. If you don't like the notifications or they clutter your inbox, create a filter that archives or deletes all the messages that are labeled "buzz" (a built-in Gmail label). Make sure you type label:buzz (you could also use is:buzz) in the "Has the words" box and ignore Gmail's warning.

3. Add more connected sites.

Google Buzz lets you import content from services like Google Reader, Picasa, Blogger, Twitter, Flickr, but it's not obvious how to add other sites. Let's say you want to add your FriendFeed profile or the feed of your site. To do that, you need to make sure that the site links to your Google Profile or to one of the services that are associated with your Google Profile.

Google explains how to add a link to your profile and how to include a special markup (rel="me") that offers more information about the link: it's a profile page.

Unfortunately, you can't connect the site immediately after you add the link. Google needs to crawl the site before updating the connections. "When the site is re-crawled the mutual claim will be verified and feeds associated with the site will be made available within Google Buzz for the verified user."

4. Link to a Google Buzz message.

If a message is public, it has a permalink that could be used to share the discussion. Gmail shows the links without having to use additional options, but it's not obvious that the timestamp of the message is actually a permalink.

5. Quickly open Google Buzz.

If you've enabled keyboard shortcuts in Gmail, type g b from any Gmail view and you'll open Google Buzz.

Some other useful shortcuts:

Shift+l - like a message
m - mute (ignore) a conversation
r - add a comment
p / n - go to the newer / older conversation
o - expand conversation

6. Hide Google Buzz's counter.

Google Buzz's message counter is distracting, so it would be nice to hide it. Unfortunately, there's no Gmail option that lets you hide counter, but you can hide the link to Google Buzz. Drag "Buzz" to the "X more" drop-down and you can hide the Buzz label.

7. Subscribe to a Google Buzz account in a feed reader.

Google posts each user's public messages to the profile page. Open the profile page and click on the orange icon displayed by your browser to subscribe to the feed. A Google Buzz feed has an address that looks like this:

8. Find public Google Buzz messages.

If you thought that Google Buzz's search box is restricted to your social connections, think again. Google Buzz's search feature shows the latest public messages that match your query.

Some useful searches:

author:@gmail.com - find all the messages written by a specific user (you can also use a partial name instead of an email address)

commenter:@gmail.com - find all the messages that have a comment from a specific user

has:photo, has:video, has:link - restricts the results to messages that include photos, videos or links (for example: vancouver has:photo)

source:flickr, source:twitter, source:reader- restricts the results to messages imported from Flickr, Twitter, Google Reader etc.

9. Save searches

You can bookmark your favorite Buzz searches by enabling the Quick Links feature from Gmail Labs. After performing a search, click on "Add quick link" and add a name for your bookmark.

10. View Google Buzz photos in a slideshow

When you upload photos to Google Buzz, they're added to a new Picasa Web Albums. If you click on a thumbnail, Google Buzz will open a lightbox to help you quickly navigate between images. Unfortunately, there's no option to view the images in a slideshow, but Picasa Web Albums has this feature and there's a small link that opens the photo album. Click on "view all" and you can open the slideshow option, export photos using Picasa or print photos.

11. Google Buzz on a map

Use the address of the mobile Google Maps interface to see Google Buzz messages from all over the world.

How a Simple URL Hack Can Expose Your Gmail Address [Privacy] - Lifehacker

Google took a lot of flack over privacy concerns this week, like over a loophole that allowed people to figure out your private email address in replies. Security weblog Social Hacking details another method your Gmail address is exposed using a URL hack.

The Social Hacking post points out that users with numeric profile address (e.g., http://www.google.com/profiles/104424237445852766735--the numeric address of the post's author) may think that means their Google account username is still hidden. Turns out with that number, it's actually very easy to divine a user's account id. Here's how it works (from ReadWriteWeb):

First, you simply copy the numbers from a user's Google profile and then append these numbers to http://picasaweb.google.com/[numbers].

For some users who haven't customized their Picasa page, the username (which is also their Gmail address) will come right up. If the user has customized the account and added a nickname, you simply have to replace the URL in the address bar with javascript:alert(_user.name); and a small pop-up window will show you the username.

The solution, from Social Hacking:

To protect yourself from this access, visit the Picasa settings page. Under "Your gallery URL," add a new username and select the new username for your gallery URL. Also, you may want to edit your nickname.

I suppose the point here isn't that Google's done you wrong in every way, but it's worth recognizing that when you go public with Google accounts, they really are public, and they tie together in more ways than you might realize.

So I wrote a post yesterday about government waste in which I dared to suggest that some Americans may be confused about just what exactly our federal government spends its money on and in what amounts. I still cannot find any survey results in which Americans are asked to apply actual percentages to actual spending categories. But I have dug up some other, related findings.

Before proceeding, let's establish some general baselines of actual federal government spending against which to compare what we do know about American perceptions. The above pie chart, taken from Wikipedia, breaks down spending into more than two dozen programs or cabinet agencies. But we can simplify this a bit by collapsing the eight largest chunks/wedges into three main categories:

Welfare for seniors, 34 percent: Social Security and Medicare wedges.
Defense, 22 percent (Defense and Homeland Security).
Welfare for everyone else, 20 percent ( Medicaid, Unemployment Insurance and Health & Human Services.)
Interest, 9 percent (Interest).

First of all, Americans tend to think we spend too much on what they call "welfare," but which in fact limited mostly to category 3 above--welfare for non-seniors. A Kaiser survey conducted a while back (1995) clearly indicates a high level of suspicion toward "welfare" spending, but when asked to clarify respondents clearly meant programs like food stamps, TANF programs (formerly AFDC), Medicaid and public housing. Indeed, although about 90 percent of Americans viewed housing, AFDC and food stamps as welfare, only 30 percent defined Medicare and just 15 percent deemed Social Security "welfare."

Of course, citizens pay into SSI and Medicare with their payroll taxes, but there is still a redistributive effect of spending by the government on these programs. Unemployment insurance apparently didn't even make the list, even though today it's about one dollar in every nine the feds spend. In any event, these definitions have meaning when it comes to budget-cutting. According to a Bloomberg poll two months ago, fewer than one in four Americans thinks we should cut Social Security or Medicare, despite the fact that more than a third of the US budget is spent on these two programs alone.

The Kaiser results further confirm the apparently longstanding belief among Americans that we spend more than we actually do not only on foreign aid, but interest and defense. Though we can't get to actual percentages the way the Kaiser poll asked it, it's clear which parts of the budget Americans think constitute the largest or second-largest spending commitments. About 40 percent of Americans cited two of the following four items as being one of the government's top two expenditures: foreign aid (41%), welfare (40%), interest (40%) and defense (37%). Only if Americans defined welfare as inclusive of Social Security and Medicare would these views be accurate--with welfare thusly combined and defined easily ranking #1, and in which case defense would rank #2.

But again, that's clearly not how Americans define "welfare," and even if they did it's difficult to explain how foreign aid ranks first. And it's clear that "foreign aid" isn't viewed as the effective function of our defense expenditures, or else defense would rank a lot lower.

In any case, given the anxiety we hear about constantly in terms of government spending and deficits, how could all that "waste" be eliminated. Remember, with almost no public support for tinkering with Social Security or Medicare--heck, even Republicans are scare-mongering about cuts to Medicare, the fastest-growing federal program--we start with just two-thirds of the budget in play politically. Of that, clearly there is ample political will to cut welfare that's viewed as going to the so-called "undeserving" poor people. (If you want to understand why Americans hate such kinds of welfare, I suggest reading Martin Gilens book that addresses this question squarely: Why Americans Hate Welfare.) But since unemployment insurance (to which workers also contribute) did not make the list of referents respondents cited when asked by Kaiser to identify welfare in terms of specific programs, 12 percent of that 20 percent should also be taken out of play, leaving just 8 percent of the budget as the "dastardly" kind of welfare.

OK, so for the sake of argument, let's say the government immediately ceased payment of all that remaining 8 percent in "welfare" spending. According to the Bloomberg poll, there also seems to be growing frustration with Iraq and Afghanistan war spending, but that only accounts for about $130 billion right now--and that money is "off-budget" anyway. And while we might wish not to pay interest on our outstanding debts, that's simply not an option--and interest payments couldn't be categorized as "waste" anyway because they're simply debt-service. (I suppose there are some administrative costs to paying those debts--what I classified in the previous post as Type 2 waste--but there's basically zero efficiency savings to be found there.)

So where's the rest of the "waste" that, in Americans' minds, adds up to half of what the government spends? You tell me, because I have no idea. But I do know this much: Given the perception that so much money goes to the so-called "undeserving poor" here at home as well as to foreigners through foreign aid, it's not surprising that people think government spending is wasteful. If half the budget--instead about one-seventh--actually went to such things, I could understand the sentiment.

The same pattern is being following in attempts by corporations to make people dependent on their products. This increase in dependency parallels that described in George Orwell's 1984 book.
