General Tips for successful IRC'ing:

Each IRC network can support thousands of users, but each user must have a unique nickname. If your favorite IRC network runs a NickServ service, you should protect your nickname by registering it. Some channels on some networks will not allow you to connect unless you identify to a registered nick. All you have to do is connect to the IRC network and register your current nickname by typing:

/msg NickServ register password

Be sure to specify a password. When you next connect to the IRC network, you can identify yourself to NickServ by typing:

/msg NickServ identify password

NickServ will now recognize who you are. Once you are registered with NickServ, you can do all sorts of other useful tasks, such as kicking off people who have stolen your nickname. To find out what else NickServ supports, simply type the following:

/msg NickServ help

If somebody uses your nickname while you are not connected, you will have no way of getting it back until they leave. However, you can get back your nick by logging in to the network with an alternative nickname and killing the ghost nick using the following command:

/msg NickServ ghost nicktokill password

To get a list of channels on a network type /list after connecting successfully.

Though originally founded as a chat network for gamers, by gamers, QuakeNet welcomes everyone to chat about anything (within its rules). QuakeNet is also currently the largest chat network in the world.

QuakeNet has no NickServ, but does allow users to register to the network via Q. This allows access to QuakeNet services, as well as the ability to hide your IP address (with a AUTH.users.quakenet.org host, where AUTH is the name of your network account). This account, created when you register, is known as a Q account. Q also acts as a channel service bot for large channels, with a large userbase. It has facilities such as topic and ban enforcing, auto limits, and so on. The main function, however, is to protect your channel and allow it to be recovered in the event somebody takes it over.

Finally, QuakeNet provide an anti-spam bot called S. This is only available to very large channels, and acts to reduce any spam in your channel.
