The Thermo Scientific Pierce Scholarship Program for the Winter/Spring 2013 semester includes two (2) $10,000 scholarships and four (4) $5,000 scholarships, to be awarded to undergraduate and graduate students with a declared major of biology, chemistry, biochemistry, or a related life-science field. To qualify for the scholarship, students must have a GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) and be enrolled in an accredited college for university for the Winter/Spring 2013 semester. In addition to these qualifications, students must also be legal United States residents, meaning that students possessing appropriate Visa status in order to study in the United States are also eligible.

Students may apply for the scholarship through the Thermo Scientific Pierce Scholarship Website. Applications will be accepted until 11:59:59 p.m. CT on December 14, 2012. Each application will be reviewed and evaluated by a scholarship committee and announced to the chosen recipients by January 8, 2013. We strongly encourage all students that meet the scholarship award criteria to apply for this great scholarship! Demand for qualified commercial truck drivers is high and growing! Many truckers can earn an average of $40,000 in their first year, and much more after only a few years in the industry.

The purpose of the Commercial Truck Driving Certificate Program is to prepare students for careers in commercial truck driving. It emphasizes specialized training in the fundamental skill set needed to be successful in the field.

Admission Requirements:

• Valid driver’s license
• No more than eight points (or five in one year) or four moving violations on the Georgia Violator Scale
• Seven year Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) from the State of Georgia Highway Patrol with no DUI violations in the last five years
• Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination
• NIDA 5 drug screen

• Fundamentals of Commercial Truck Driving

• Advanced Operations or Internship

Chattahoochee began by winning the college cheer competition in the opening ceremonies with a new rendition of Alan Jacksons “way down yonder on the Chattahoochee” rewritten by Allison Mauelshagen and with Travis Fincannon playing a solo guitar to hold the 21 strong Chattahoochee teams singing efforts claiming a check for 1000.00 with the win. 

The competition consisted of 28 events with Chattahoochee claiming 19 top ten finishes 4 scholarships, 4st. place finishes  and the with Keith Loggins winning the 1^st. place Superstar competition claiming a check for $1500.00. The Superstar is a competition for any student who competes in 5 events and accumulates more total points than any of the other 800 plus students.

The Georgia Mining Foundation was established  seventeen years ago with a $20,000 scholarship fund to be distributed as individual scholarships.  This year, the Georgia Mining Foundation will be giving away $250 scholarships to students attending technical colleges in Georgia.  Students attending a Georgia technical college, and who meet the following criteria are eligible to apply.

The applicant must:

1. have an overall average of 85% or higher;
2. receive a faculty recommendation (instructor or counselor).  The recommendation (maximum one page) should address the following personal qualities:  integrity, written/oral expression, personality, motivation, initiative, and financial need;
3. provide an essay (200 words or less) addressing your financial need for the scholarship; and
4. provide any further evidence of financial need (if applicable).

Deadline for the Application and Letter of Recommendation is February 29, 2012.

If you're the type who likes to be home quite a bit, there are truck driving jobs where drivers are home every weekend, and in some cases, there are trucking jobs where the drivers are home every night. Local drivers earn an average annual wage of $35,000.00 to $48,000.00 however local wages are predicted to rise over the next 2 or 3 years due to an aging driver pool.

(Education Center - Pickens Hall)Chattahoochee Technical College has been selected to host two town hall meetings for the Governor’s Office of Workforce Development. House Bill 186, was recently signed into law to establish certification in soft skills such as punctuality, ability to learn, appropriate business attire and ability to work as a team. This certification will complement the current assessment system utilized in Georgia to assess knowledge in applied math, reading for information and locating information.  Upon graduation, students will have a diploma as well as certifications in soft skills and work readiness.

These public town hall meetings will allow Georgians, including students, parents, business leaders, and Georgia’s professional educators, to be a part of the establishment of a statewide certification in soft skills for Georgia’s schools.

The key is to apply NOW... There will be a lot of retirements coming up rather quickly and they need to line up training to accommodate these openings. It's my understanding that the FAA rarely has an open application such as this and that the jobs are coveted.

This is a great opportunity and it should be noted that choosing a site like Anchorage or Indianapolis to train is a likely acceptance into the training program - after which you can transfer anywhere in the country that has a tower. I hope you pass this information on to family & friends.

Priority registration for summer and fall terms begins today. Based on the total number of credit hours they have earned at CTC, our current students will be able to register beginning on the first, second, or third day of registration, while Banner ensures that New Students must await New Student Registration, which begins on May 13th.

The priority registration schedule for summer and fall terms will be as follows:

Registration for students with:

• 80 earned hours and above will open at 8 a.m. on May 11th
• 30 earned hours and above will open at 8 a.m. on May 12th
• Currently enrolled students with no earned credit hours will open at 8 am on May 13th
• New students (defined as zero earned hours) will begin at 8 a.m. on May 13th

Once a student’s designated priority registration has opened, their BannerWeb access will remain open until early registration closes on June 15th for Summer Quarter and August 11th for Fall Semester both at 6 PM.

The first Fee Payment Deadline for summer term is June 20th at 6PM and August 12th at noon for fall term.

Please NOTE: The total number of credit hours earned does NOT include learning support courses (classes numbered 0096-0099), transfer courses, or courses in which a grade of W, WP, WF, I, or F was issued.

Also: Students can determine their total number of credit hours earned by reviewing their unofficial academic transcript through BannerWeb. To access the unofficial transcript, students should be directed to BannerWeb and select the options of “Student Records” and “Academic Transcript.” The total number of earned hours will be displayed at the top of this transcript.

I wanted to drop everyone a line to remind everyone about a few AMA items and things in the works for our club:

1. We would like to welcome Mr. Ryan Greene to the AMA as our new advisor.  Mr. Gene Freund, the founder of this chapter, recently moved out of state.  Although we were sad to see him leave, we are excited to have Mr. Greene bring new energy and ideas to our chapter.  Please give him a warm welcome when you see him.
2. An AMA meeting will be held this Thursday, Feb. 3 at 5pm (YES, that is 5 PM for those of you students who have been asking for an evening time instead of a morning time)!  The meeting will be held at the North Metro campus in Room 204.  The topic is one that I think needs to be covered:
   
   "The ABC's of the AMA" - this meeting, we are inviting newbies, visitors, the curious and the fence-sitters to come and see what AMA is all about.  We are actively recruiting NOW for our new officers/board members.  Imagine what a feather in your resume cap serving as an officer in the AMA would be to your resume.  If you haven't been to any meetings in a while, come to this one.  Everyone will be "new" and you can get involved right now.
3. The AMA Collegiate Conference is less than 2 weeks away.  It will be held at the Biltmore in Atlanta on Friday, February 11th and your club membership qualifies you to go.

If your tuition and fees are fully paid by either financial aid (HOPE, Pell, etc.) or by other sources, you may use up to $300.00 in Federal Pell Grant funds in the CTC bookstores. 

If a student has used Pell Grant in the bookstore and withdraws completely from the college or drops all classes for a quarter/semester, he or she will be required to return those funds to CTC before being allowed to re-enroll, have records released, etc.

Losing a child to a brain tumor is a pain most us can't even imagine. Catie Wilkins was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a brain tumor, on her first birthday, Sep. 26, 2003, Catie endured 11 surgeries, 36 months of chemotherapy, and 30 radiation treatments. The little girl fought hard. Catie was 4 years old when she died Jan. 19, 2007.

One of Catie's favorite possessions was her Elf. His name was Jingle, but Catie always called him "that Silly Old Elf."

Every night during the holidays, while the kids are asleep, elf gets into some type of mischief. Think of knocking books off a shelf or pulling down garland.

He also keeps an eye on the kids and updates Santa with reports of their nice or naughty behavior.

Each morning while Catie's Elf was visiting, the first words out of her mouth were "what did that Silly Elf do now?"

Today, almost four years since Catie's death, elves are given to pediatric cancer patients in hospitals nationwide and over $10,000 has been raised to cure childhood cancer.

The following procedures will be in effect for the drop / add  and schedule change periods: 

Drop/Add

•  September 29^th - October 1^st
  • Students may add/drop classes the first three days via BannerWeb without an instructor’s signature of approval. BannerWeb will be opened at 8 am on September 29^th  and will close for registration on October 1^st  at 3 p m. All classes dropped during the first three days will receive 100% refund for any paid credit hours dropped.   Any tuition and fees incurred by adding a course during the first three days of the quarter are due on Friday, October 1 at 3 pm 

Schedule Change with Instructor’s Approval 

•  October 2^nd – October 5^th
  • No refunds will be issued for courses dropped.   An instructor’s signature of  approval is required to add any class.  Students can email faculty to obtain approval.  Tuition and fees incurred by adding a course are due on Tuesday, October 5^th at 6 pm. 

 Any class dropped from October 2^nd – Nov. 2nd   will receive a grade of “W.” 

New Withdrawal Process 

Beginning fall term, BannerWeb will be available beginning the 4^th day of the quarter, Saturday, October 2nd until the last day to receive a “W,” Tuesday, November 2nd  so that students may self withdraw using BannerWeb.  The withdrawal code in Banner has been set to automatically assign the grade of “W” during this timeframe.  If you are withdrawing from the final class on your schedule, please do so by either emailing withdraw@chattahoocheetech.edu or visiting the Student Affairs Office on the campus of your choice. 

After the last day to receive a “W,” the normal procedure to withdraw from classes will be followed.  The student must withdraw by either emailing  withdraw@chattahoocheetech.edu or by completing the withdrawal form available on-line at chattahoocheetech.edu and submitting to the Student Affairs office on any campus. 

This procedure; however, does not change the normal drop/add/schedule change process.   Students will not be able to add courses or switch sections using BannerWeb after the 3^rd day of the quarter.  Students must still have  instructor permission to add a class beginning with the 4^th day of the quarter and extending through the 7^th day of the quarter 

No changes will be made to student schedules after the drop/add period and schedule change periods have ended.  

Office Hours during the week of Drop /Add for the Academic, Student Affairs and Finance offices are as follows:  

• Wed.  September 29th / Thursday, September 30^th
  • Extended office hours are from 7:30 am – 7 pm on the Appalachian, North Metro, Marietta, Mt. View  and Paulding campuses only.  The Woodstock campus and South Cobb campus are open from 8 am – 5 pm.
•  Friday, Oct. 1
  • Office hours are from 7:30 am – 4:30 pm 
• Saturday, October 2nd
  • Office hours are from 7:30 am – 11: 30 am on the Marietta and North Metro campuses only . 
• Regular office hours from 7:30 am – 6 pm. will resume on Monday, October 4^th.

Wednesday, October 14th 10:00 a.m., Education Center, Room 318

The ASTP is an entry-level, hands-on, skills-based aircraft assembler training program. Topics include assembly tools, blueprint reading, fastener pattern layouts, solid rivet installation and fastener installation. Student achievement will be evaluated with skills performance demonstrations, and students will also complete the Manufacturing Skills Standards Council (MSSC) training modules in safety and quality. Those students that successfully demonstrate the required skill level will receive the nationally recognized MSSC certifications in safety and quality.

Registration will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily beginning Sept. 1 until classes are filled. The registration site is Building H of CTC’s Marietta Campus at 980 South Cobb Drive.

The total cost of this program, including textbooks and materials, is $4,500, which is approved for Workforce Investment Act funding for those that qualify. Applicants will also be responsible for the administration fee of $100 which includes the background check, drug screen and math/English tests. The Administration Fee of $100 is due at registration and is non-refundable.

Students must meet the following requirements:

• United States citizen or permanent resident alien
• 18 years of age or older
• Have a high school diploma or GED
• Bring a current resume at time of registration Must have a minimum of 1 year Mechanical/Construction/Assembly Experience
• Able to pass a background check/No felonies
• Able to pass a drug screen test
• Registered for Selective Service, if male
• Test at a 9th grade level for Math and 10th grade level for English on the TABE

Prospective students interested in this program and feel they meet these requirements should plan to register at 9 a.m. Sept. 1, 2010 and remember to bring a current resume with them.

“On a regular basis, CTC hosts free 30 minute workshops designed to empower students in developing strategies to achieve academic and career success,” said Dianne Barker, special populations coordinator at Chattahoochee Technical College. “We cover various topics in academic enhancement, personal development and career exploration.”

Ranging from test taking skills to finding ways to finance a business venture, the workshops are offered at CTC’s seven campuses. One of the most popular and most requested topics, according to Barker is child development. That is why CTC invited Kennesaw State University Early Childhood Education Professor Dr. Raynice Jean-Sigur to speak with students about just that topic.

Jean-Sigur’s program, entitled From 0-8 in 60 Seconds: How to Keep Pace with Your Growing Child, was designed to teach students about children from birth to age 8. According to theorists, Jean-Sigur told the audience, much of a person’s brain development occurs before someone is 3 years old.

“As caregivers of young children we hold many different jobs,” she said. “These jobs can be without financial incentive. However, the reward comes when we witness our children grow into healthy individuals.”

“In our quest to help our students become global citizens, it’s an important concept for our students to understand the diversity in the world around them,” said Greg Moor, International Services and International Center Coordinator at Chattahoochee Technical College. “A big part of that is making sure students know that it is good to be understanding and tolerant of other cultures through exposure and experiences like this. The festival helps bring that message home.”

The festival will run from 11 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. and feature performers, international food and other exhibits. Among the entertainment expected to be on presented are a Mariachi band, Thai dancers, African drummer and a belly dancer. Visitors will also be able to sample food from Australia, China, the Mediterranean, Mexico, Jamaica and Nigeria. Also available will be Henna Art from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“We will have more diverse food samples from around the world this year,” Moor said. “We always offer something the festival visitor can take with them; this year for the first time we will have Henna Art – a form of body art drawn on the body by eucalyptus ink.”

With the largest and most diverse population of international students of any of Georgia’s 28 technical colleges, Chattahoochee Technical College currently enrolls more than 1,500 foreign born students, representing more than 80 countries. It is currently the only technical college in Georgia with an international center.

The International Center provides services that support the college’s non-immigrant, international, permanent resident, exchange, and foreign-born student population. It provides pre-admission to post-graduation assistance. Programs that support the international community and international initiatives are directed through the International Center/International Services.
