This was the perfect opportunity to dive into some of the previous fabric collections that I received from Island Batik of Lumin Fabrics this year and to also use some of their foundation fabrics.

I had previously received a Strip Pack of Precious Pink and thought that this would be the perfect fabric for the project that I designed for December: a retro pink Christmas tree!

Full disclosure: I designed this project for members of The Quilter’s Way, (although pink wasn’t in my plans for them!) the online membership that I host, but knew that it would be a great project for the Island Batik Ambassador challenge this month too.

Here’s my initial design that I created in EQ8

I initially incorporated fabrics from the Under the Sea fabric collection, a Signature Collection by Jerry Khiev for Swan Sheridan of Swan Amity Studios, for the background but decided that it was a bit too busy so I substituted one of Island Batik’s Blender fabrics for the background instead.

I did keep the Under the Sea fabric for the first border. I also included 4 fabrics from various Island Batik collections in the second border (although you don’t see them in the above image).

Once I’d finalized the design it was time to start making the blocks!

The tree is composed of strip pieced blocks and strip pieced half square triangle blocks. They’re easy to make and I only used half of the Precious Pinks Strip Pack to make it - leaving more beautiful pink fabrics for another project. 😉

I next had to cut up blocks for the background and the tree trunk and I also needed to create the star appliqué - also from a previous Island Batik fabric collection. I also had to cut squares for the second border and stitch them together as well as make the half square triangle cornerstones for this border.

Once the blocks were cut, I stitched them together into rows, added the star appliqué at the top of the tree and then stitched the borders to the centre of the quilt top. I used Aurifil thread for the piecing and for finishing the edges of the star appliqué.

My Oliso M3 Pro Project iron was very helpful for pressing all of the seams.

The top was now done…well, almost!

I decided to add faux trapunto to the tree, the tree trunk, and the star. This meant cutting out batting slightly larger than all these areas and I used Hobbs Poly-Down batting for this as I wanted to create additional “puffiness” with the faux trapunto. This batting was stitched to the back of these areas on the quilt top and then trimmed.

Once this was done, it was time to layer the top, batting, and backing so it could be quilted. I used Hobbs 80/20 cotton polyester batting for this step.
I used several different quilting motifs on this project: large wishbone for the tree, loops in the star and woodgrain in the tree trunk and then wavy lines in the first border and ls and es in the second one. Here are some detail images of the various quilting motifs.

I wanted to use a smaller scale motif in the background to compress it and used Es (upper case cursive Es) and 3s in this area.

This month the challenge was to use at least 5 traditional quilt blocks to create a lap or larger size quilt using a new fabric collection from Island Batik of Lumin Fabrics. I was given the new Summer 2025 Under the Sea fabric collection by Jerry Khiev for Swan Sheridan of Swan Amity Studios for my project and I love the rich colours in this beautiful collection.

For my Starburst quilt I chose to use the following blocks: Nine Patch Chain, Flying Geese, Friendship Star, Variable Star, Four Patch, and Half Square Triangles. Although these are all easy to make traditional quilt blocks, there were some that I had never made before so this was the perfect opportunity to learn a new block.

I played with the above blocks in EQ8 and came up with the following design which used all 20 of the fabrics in the Under the Sea fabric collection.

While this was my final design decision, it wasn’t my original concept…I made a few changes mostly due to the fact that I hadn’t respected the fact that you can’t drop just any block into any size space. For example, it doesn’t work very well to put a 3 unit block into a 8” space in your quilt - the cutting math doesn’t work out very well (ask me how I know!).

After a bit of a hiccup with that issue, I changed up my design a bit and everything went smoothly after that.
Because there was a lot of cutting and stitching to create each of the blocks (isn’t there always?!), I found it helpful to create a table of the various fabrics in each block. This included all of the fabrics in the Under the Sea collection (20 fabrics in total for the entire quilt!), the number of pieces to be cut from each fabric, and cutting dimensions.

For example, if I need 20 - 3 ½” x 3 1/2” squares of a certain fabric, this means that I’ll need to cut 2 strips of fabric 3 ½” x WOF and then sub-cut into 20 - 3 ½” x 3 1/2” squares. Once I’ve created this table, I like to print it out so I can check off each piece as I cut it. This ensures that I don’t miss any and have everything ready to start stitching the blocks together. It’s also helpful if I want to replicate the quilt again in the future.

Once all of the fabric had been cut, I labelled each one with the block name and piece so I could start stitching the blocks together.

As there were several Flying Geese blocks in the quilt and also used to make the Variable Star block, I used the 4-in-1 method to create them. I like to make these a bit bigger and trim them down with the Studio 180 Design Wing Clipper tool - very helpful and makes for very nice results.

And, of course, I had help from my purry assistants while making this project. Here’s Victor modelling the finished Variable Star block 🤣.

Once all of the blocks were stitched together, I placed them on my design wall and started constructing the quilt top. It all went together easily (thankfully!).

And here’s the final result.

Notice that I haven’t quilted this project…yet! I’ve had a few family issues to deal with and some unanticipated travel so I haven’t yet quilted Starburst as I want to be able to do it justice - and rushing the quilting part never ends well. I have lots of ideas and will be quilting it in the future with some ruler work and free motion quilting.

This month, the theme is “Sew Stylish” and Ambassadors were challenged to create a pattern from ByAnnie.com using Island Batik of Lumin Fabrics fabrics.

For my project, I chose “Sidekick” which is a saddlebag organizer that has lots of pockets for storage and is made for use with either a chair or a walker.

I thought this would be perfect for my Mom to use with her walker to carry various items. Big thanks to ByAnnie.com for providing all of the notions needed to make the Sidekick pattern: strapping, Soft & Stable, hook and loop tape, fold-over elastic, and more!

I was really pleased with the final result but there were times when I felt a bit overwhelmed by this project and wasn’t sure if I’d be able to make it successfully. I’m not a bag maker. My previous bag experience was making a pouch project so this was a big step out of my comfort zone but that’s what challenges are all about, right?! 😉 Thanks to the excellent instructions in the ByAnnie.com pattern and the Add-on Videos for this pattern, I was able to persevere and I’m thrilled with the result.

One of the hardest decisions I had to make for Sidekick was the fabric. It required only three fabrics and I chose these from the new Everlasting collection by Jerry Khiev for Island Batik of Lumin Fabrics.

As I worked along, I had some help from one of my purry assistants, Salem. She made sure that I was on track and progressing well but she didn’t get to use part of Sidekick for a cat bed even though she tried to stake her claim! 🤣🐈‍⬛

When making Sidekick I used my Oliso M3 Pro Project iron. This small craft iron was perfect for getting into small areas to keep everything pressed well. I also used Schmetz needles when quilting and stitching the project. For stitching I used polyester thread for its strength and also because I had lots of different polyester thread colours which I needed as I frequently switched thread to match the various fabrics in this project.

Here are a few images of my progress in making Sidekick.

I learned a lot making this project: how to make two zippers from one zipper; how to attach fold-over elastic, how to work with mesh, and more. I know that I’ll be able to use these new skills when making future bag projects.

And, if I wasn’t sure that my Sidekick project was successful, I only had to ask Salem. I think she approves!

Ambassadors received new fabric collections to use in this challenge. I used Geode Glow a Signature collection by Kathy Engle for Kari Nichols of Quilting Renditions of Island Batik of Lumin Fabrics for my crazy quilt project.

I just loved the gorgeous purples and warm golds in this new fabric collection.

As this blog hop was sponsored by Aurifil, we could choose thread in coordinating colours for our specific fabric collection. I chose shades of gold, yellow, dark blue, and purple for my quilt and used these to create the decorative stitches that I added to the pieced quilt blocks.

Okay, I didn’t really add them…my Janome 500E embroidery machine did. Yes, I machine embroidered all of the blocks in my quilt and was able to easily choose specific stitches and thread colours for all of the seams.

I also used the quilt as you go method, although I only stitched the top and batting together. I later added individual backings for each of the blocks with sashing in between all of them.

When making this quilt I used Schmetz needles as well as a cotton and wool batting from Hobbs Quilt Batting. Of course my Oliso M3 Pro Project iron helped in pressing all of my fabrics before I added them to the machine embroidered blocks.

And here’s Glowing Jewels!

With 20 different fabrics in Geode Glow, I decided to make 20 blocks so I could include each of the fabrics in the same place in each block. All of the blocks are the same however I rotated them when stitching them into the quilt top. I also used the same decorative stitches in each block but varied which Aurifil thread I used.

Can you find the 20 different fabrics in the individual blocks in Glowing Jewels? (Hint: they are all in the same piece as the dark blue fabric in the third row).

One thing I added that wasn’t machine stitched in Glowing Jewels was my initials. Traditionally crazy quilts have additional embellishments and hand embroidery in them. While I considered hand stitching all of the decorative stitches (I love to do hand embroidery!), time didn’t permit so instead I simply used one of the Aurifil threads to embroider my initials “KJH” to one of the blocks.

I received two boxes: one full of lots of Island Batik fabrics - yardage, half yard cuts and precuts - as well as some thread from Aurifil. The second box was stuffed with batting from Hobbs Quilt Batting.

Let’s check out what I received in the first box!

When I opened it up, this is what I saw.

I pulled everything out and this is what was in that box! So much gorgeous fabric and thread! I can hardly wait to start creating with these fabrics which include new collections, such as Earth Essence from Kathy Engle for Quilting Renditions (Kari Nichols) and Geode Glow by Kathy Engle.

Let’s take a closer look at the various items that I received in the first box I opened. I’ve included them in a gallery below so just click the arrows to toggle between the images.

You’ll see that there are several different precuts as well as half yard bundles that will coordinate with the half yard cuts of new fabric collections that I received. I also received 4 yard bundles of black, grey and white solids that work perfectly for background fabric.

The threads that I received from Aurifil were ones that I selected to coordinate with the Geode Glow fabric collection as I’ll be using them in an upcoming Ambassador challenge.

In addition to the first box, I also received a second box which contained lots of different battings from Hobbs Quilt Batting. I love using their products and enjoy experimenting with battings which I haven’t previously used. Check out the battings that were in box 2 below

There was one additional item that was in the first box that is always fun to receive and that is the Surprise bundle. It always contains a new fabric collection and I’ll be sharing what was in that package in the future.

This is a super fun challenge as Ambassadors got to choose any pattern from Funky Friends Factory and choose any Island Batik fabrics to make the stuffy!

I chose Nate the Narwhal and choose a variety of Island Batik fabrics from their Playful Posies and Blenders collections to create my version, which I call “Nellie the Narwhal”.

I love working with Funky Friends Factory patterns: they’re so easy to understand and many, including this one, have step-by-step photo tutorials (the link is in the pattern) so it’s super simple to stitch up one of their cute designs. There are even check boxes so you can check off each step as you construct your project.

I wanted to add a bit more fabric to Nellie, so I pieced three different Island Batik fabrics together for the Tummy and Chest pieces.

I also printed out the various templates and glued them to freezer paper. I could then press them to the appropriate fabrics and cut them out. I then removed the freezer paper and, if I want to make another Nate or Nellie in the future, I can use these templates again.

Of course I used my Oliso M3Pro iron to press the templates to the various fabrics.

When making the flippers for Nellie, there is some top stitching required. This is also true of the tail pieces. I used a contrasting Aurifil thread in a classic pink colour for this top stitching and loved the extra embellishment this gave Nellie.

There are instructions on the Funky Friends Factory website about inserting craft eyes when making their designs but I decided to use buttons for Nellie’s eyes since I have just a few (thousand) of these. I used my Janome CM17 to machine sew the blue buttons onto Nellie and then glued small black buttons in the centre of the blue buttons. I really like the result!

During the construction process, I was a bit concerned that I was making a manta ray and not a narwhal but with a bit more stitching, I could see Nellie taking shape. 😉

When Nellie was all stitch up, she looked a bit flat but that was soon resolved once she was stuffed.

I used Hobbs Bonded Fibers Simply Stuffing to firmly stuff my narwhal. I’ve used various brands of stuffing in other projects and I’ve got to say that I really loved the softness of this brand. It was very enjoyable to work with and I was able to stuff Nellie smoothly without any lumps or bumps.

This month, the Island Batik Ambassador challenge was to create a project using the traditional Irish Chain block. This blog hop was sponsored by AccuQuilt, who sent each Ambassador their AccuQuilt GO! Irish Chain BOB die to help with the design. This made for very accurate - and fast - cutting and I loved that the corners are cropped to make it easy to match block pieces and stitch them together.

The best part of this challenge was deciding on how to use the colourful fabrics in the new Splish Splash fabric collection by Heidi Pridemore of The Whimsical Workshop. This collection by Island Batik for Lumin Fabrics is full of starfish, seaweed, and seahorses and I loved the bright colours in this collection. I paired these fabrics with Eggshell, one of the neutral foundation fabrics from Island Batik.

I designed my Irish Jewels quilt in EQ8 and then had to decide where to put the various fabrics in the Splish Splash collection. Of the 20 fabrics in the collection, I managed to use 19 in my quilt - one of them being part of the pieced backing.

I determined where to place the various fabrics on the shapes on the AccuQuilt Irish Chain die and then cut them which took very little time. The advantage of using an AccuQuilt GO! cutter and die!

I then laid them out in shape piles so I could easily choose the correct shape and fabric to create each block in Irish Jewels.

I found my design boards very helpful for piecing this project. I laid out each block on a design board to ensure that I had all of the correct fabrics and shapes for that block and could then carry the board to the sewing machine to piece the block together. I could’ve chain pieced the quilt but with so many different fabrics, I thought my chances of piecing them incorrectly and having to pull out the seam ripper was too high so did each block individually.

I used Aurifil thread and a Schmetz needle to piece each block, then laid them out in rows before stitching each row together. To ensure that the rows could then be accurately pieced together, I pressed the seams in each row in opposite directions using my Oliso Pro3 project iron.

Once the rows were all stitched together, I added the two borders and cornerstones. I then sandwiched the quilt using a cotton/wool blend batting from Hobbs Batting.

The next part is always the most challenging and most fun for me: quilting! I love to combine various types of quilting such as walking foot, decorative stitching, and free motion quilting as I did in this project.

I stitched in the ditch with a walking foot between the borders and then used a serpentine decorative stitch in some of the areas and free motion quilted a floral design, swirls, and l’s and e’s in the blocks. I left the small first border blank as a break between the blocks and the wider border. I quilted l’s and e’s in the second border and repeated the flower swirl in the large cornerstone and a swirl in the smaller ones.

I love how the quilting turned out and I think that the serpentine stitch looks like waves which are perfect for the Splish Splash fabrics.

The challenge this month was to make a project using a traditional quilt block - the Drunkard’s Path - in an untraditional way and I was up for this challenge!

I used my Modern Curves design that I had previously created for my online membership, The Quilter’s Way. This design is square and finishes at 45”.

I used an Island Batik Stack (10” squares) from the Flutter Wings fabric collection by Kathy Engle as well as black fabric from the solids collection.

I was able to use the fabric from the Stack not only in the blocks but also in one of the borders and in the pieced binding. And I still have at least half of the Stack left for a future project. I loved the bright, summery fabrics in the Flutter Wings collection and really loved how they popped off the black background.

I used an acrylic template to cut my fabrics for 6” finished blocks and then had to do the dreaded curved piecing. I’ve tried to do this many different ways and I get the best results when I just stitch slowly with a ¼” foot and use a stiletto to feed my two fabrics under the needle. My Oliso M3 Pro Project iron worked perfectly for pressing these small curved pieces in each block.

Once the blocks were made, I had to decide how I wanted to position them for the quilt top. Thank goodness for my portable design wall! I played with different arrangements and finally decided on one that I liked. Taking photos of the various combinations really helped in making this decision!

Now that I had decided on the block arrangements, it was time to stitch them together into rows and then rows into a quilt top. I also stitched together strips to make the first border and then attached it and the second border from the black fabric.
Once I had the top completed, it was time to decide on how to quilt Modern Curves. I use Procreate (an iPad app) to sketch out my ideas for quilt motifs and I did that for this project as well but then deviated from it quite a bit. Inspiration often hits when I’m doing the quilting.

I next had to choose what colour thread to use for the quilting. I like to use one thread for the entire quilting process if I can but it’s tough to choose a thread that works for both black and bright fabrics. After much thread playing and thinking, I decided to use a dark grey thread. I sandwiched my quilt top with Hobbs 100% cotton batting and used the black solid Island Batik fabric with a bit of the Flutter Wings fabric to create the pieced backing.

Welcome to March and another project that I’ve created using Island Batik fabrics. This month Island Batik Ambassadors were given free rein to create any project they wanted to using Island Batik of Lumin Fabrics fabrics. I chose a precut Stack called Bubbles, Curves and Corners to create this wall hanging that I made using the Modern Spools pattern from A Piece of Cake by Peta Peace.

I’ve always wanted to make this project and the It’s All Up to You challenge gave me that opportunity.

In addition to the precut Stack, I also used some of Island Batik’s solids in white and dark grey.

This was an easy quilt to construct and really shows off the fun fabrics in the Bubbles, Curves and Corners fabric collection. I especially liked the one off-kilter spool that was in this pattern - fun!

My Oliso Pro 3 iron was very helpful in pressing everything nice and flat when stitching the project together.

Perhaps the most difficult part of the project was deciding where to place the spool blocks and I tried to ensure that there was contrast in the fabrics next to one another.

This project also gave me lots of opportunity to do some fun quilting - my favourite part! I used some cursive “l’s and e’s” in the sashing, small wishbones in the spool backgrounds, and some back and forth lines in the spools. I used one of my favourite motifs, “E’s and 3”s” in the area surrounding the off-kilter spool in the bottom right of the quilt.

I used Schmetz needles to do the quilting in this project.

When it came time to sandwich the quilt, I used some Hobbs 80/20 cotton/polyester batting to give some dimension in the quilting.

Rather than using a binding in a different colour than the background fabric, I used the same background fabric to avoid “framing” the project.

I was pleased at how this project turned out and even have fabrics left from the precut Stack that will be perfect for a future project.

This month’s challenge is a little different as we already have the '“foundation”: it’s the Oliso small carry bag for the Oliso M3 Pro iron. This is such a cute and helpful travel case for this small but powerful iron that Oliso generously gave to each Island Batik Ambassador.

I love this little iron - it’s cute, colourful, and so useful. When you need to get into those small areas or want a small iron to take to a retreat, the M3 Pro iron it the one you need! It heats up quickly, has a long cord (I hate short cords!), and has a light - such a useful feature. I also like that it comes with the SoleMate, which is a silicon pad to rest the iron on when you’re not using it. It is also a way to protect the sole of the iron - get it? “SoleMate? 😅

The Island Batik Ambassador Hot Stuff Challenge for August 2025 was to decorate the small carry bag that we all received for the Oliso M3Pro iron.

Wow! Where to begin!

Since I’ve recently been diving into hand embroidery (one of my favourite techniques but one that has been on the back burner for a few years), I decided that I was going to add some hand stitching to the carry bag. I wanted to add some Island Batik fabrics, of course, and thought that some additional embellishments like buttons and/or beads would add to the fun project.

Once I’d gathered the items that I thought I’d need for this project, it was time to start!

I decided to go with a froggy design so, using a quilting stencil, I drew the frog design onto Golden Threads paper.

I then pinned it to the opening of the small carry bag with small appliqué pins (and I didn’t even get poked once during the stitching process - a first for me! 😉).

I used a chain stitch to stitch the frog outline and then gently tore off the paper.

I was really pleased with the result and no stitches were damaged in the process - and no fingers either. 😀
Once the end of the bag was embelllished, it was time to decide what to do on the rest of the carry bag.

I decided to add some appliqués: a lily flower and lily pads. I hadn’t yet picked out fabrics for the lily flowers so I chose a light, dark and then a yellow (for the flower centre) from the 5” Stash Builder strip rolls that I’d received from Island Batik of Lumin Fabrics.

I traced the pieces for the lily flowers onto fusible web and fused them to the chosen Island Batik fabrics, cut them out and then lightly fused them into one shape to be applied to the bag sides: one flower on each side.

I repeated a similar procedure with the green fabrics I’d chosen for the lily pads: two of each of these on each bag side.

Next, I had to fuse these to the bag sides, which proved a bit more difficult than I thought it would be. The fusible web didn’t want to stick very well to the felt sides so I ended up using some craft glue to keep everything in place.

It was then time to do some hand embroidery to embellish the lily pads and flowers. I used a blanket stitch around the edges of the lily pads and added some seed stitches into the larger ones. I also used a blanket stitch around part of the lily flower, deciding to leave some of the petals unfinished but glued down. I had wanted to add some hand embroidery to these petals too but going through the felt, several layers of fabric and several layers of fusible web proved too much for my hands. I think they look fine left as is.

While it’s fun to add hand embroidery embellishments, it’s even more fun to add beads! The chain stitched frog needed eyes so I added two green beads to him.

I glued an assortment of small glass beads to the lily flower centres. again, I considered stitching french knots to the lily flower centres but the layers were too thick to easily stitch through so out came the glue bottle.

The final item that needed to be added was some buttons on the top of the carry bag. I have (just a few) buttons that I thought would be perfect for this project so I glued the flowers and dragonflies to the top of the carry bag.

Here’s the finished result!

And here it is with the Oliso M3 Pro iron - the perfect combo.

Now, I can carry my Oliso M3 Pro iron in style and, when it’s resting in my studio, the carry bag will add a lovely accent.

Welcome to week 1 of the Island Batik Ambassador Runner Up blog hop! Our challenge for February 2025 is to create a table or bed runner using a new fabric collection.

I received the Botanical Dreams fabric collection by Jerry Khiev (thanks to Island Batik!) and loved working with this bright and luscious collection! Look at all those gorgeous oranges, purples and yellows - it reminds me of sunshine and tropical places! This fabric collection starts shipping to your local quilt shop this month.

There was one other requirement for this month’s challenge and that was to use a Studio 180 Design tool to create our project. I received the Corner Pop tool from Studio 180 Design and this tool makes accurate stitch and flip blocks. Thanks to Studio 180 Design for sending me this tool to use for my first 2025 project an an Island Batik Ambassador.

Once I had the fabric and the tool, it was time to use my brain to come up with a design. This is the most challenging but also most rewarding part of any challenge! I often look to EQ8 to design my quilts and it was a help to make this design too.

I decided to create 6” blocks made with 9 stitch and flip units in each of them and put 12 of these blocks together into the table runner. There was a lot of cutting required for each unit and I made sure to label the fabrics so I wouldn’t get them confused as I started to use the Corner Pop tool.

Once everything was organized, it was time to start cutting into the background square with the Corner Pop tool.

Once the background squares were prepared (corners cut), it was time to stitch on the replacement triangles. These are oversized and would be trimmed down in the final step.

Of course it’s always helpful to have the quilt inspector in my studio as I create my Island Batik Ambassador projects. 🐈‍⬛ What actually is helpful is using my Oliso M3Pro iron to get a good press on all of these little units before they’re stitched into the final quilt top.

Once all of the units were nicely pressed (thanks, Oliso!), it was time to trim them with the Corner Pop tool.

Here’s what one of the blocks looks like.

I made all 12 of the blocks and stitched them together into 2 rows and then stitched the 2 rows together to create the center of the table runner.

Next it was time to add the two borders with cornerstones. Here’s the final table runner top.

I used the pillowcase method to attach the batting and backing. Thanks to @Hobbs Quilt Batting for supplying the Thermore batting that I used in this project. I thought that this 100% polyester batting would be perfect for this project as it is very thin and no one wants a bulky table runner!

After I had prepared my quilt sandwich, I had to decide how to quilt it and I had several ideas on this. I decided to use vertical wavy lines in the center of the table runner and then do some “C” shapes in the first border and some peaks/triangles with 3 loops in the outer border. I used an oval ruler template to create the designs in the outer cornerstones.

This week I received two more boxes from @islandbatik as an Ambassador. I couldn’t wait to see what was inside these boxes - and neither could Salem!

They were stuffed with goodies from @Hobbs Quilt Batting and @Deb Tucker’s Studio 180 Design.

The first box I opened had several battings from @Hobbs Quilt Batting in it. I love using their batting and appreciate them sending different batting varieties to use in my projects.

I also received some polyester stuffing from @Hobbs Quilt Batting to use in one of the upcoming @islandbatik Ambassador challenges. So soft and squishy!

I received a new-to-me tool from @Deb Tucker’s Studio 180 Design: the Corner Pop tool. There are several variations on this tool but I received the original one and I’ll be using it to create my February 2025 project. Can’t wait!

This will be my second year as an Island Batik Ambassador and I’m honoured to have been chosen from all of the applicants who applied.

One of the really exciting things about being an Island Batik Ambassador is getting to create with their amazing batik fabrics and I’ve already received my first Ambassador box full of luscious Island Batik fabrics and items from their sponsors.

As you can probably tell, there is a lot in this box (and there is more coming in another box this month)!

Here are a few of the items that I received in my first Island Batik Ambassador box for 2025. I’ve also created a video so you can see all of the items and you’ll find that below.

Schmetz Needles is one of the Island Batik Ambassador sponsors and they sent me a selection of their needles as well as some handy information about the various needles they produce.

I also received several spools of thread that coordinate with the Island Batik fabrics from Aurifil.

I also got a project iron from Oliso. I already received an iron from them last year which I absolutely love and use every day. This new iron, the MP3 Pro - or what I call a “baby” iron will be great for travelling and for getting into some of those smaller areas where a large iron is just too big. I also received a carry bag which will protect my baby iron when travelling or when it is stored.

Then, of course, there was all the fabric from Island Batik. I received half yard cuts of one of their newest collections which will be in your local quilt shop next month, Botanical Dreams. This fabric collection by Jerry Khiev features beautiful floral designs in soft oranges, vibrant magenta, beautiful purple and calming creams. You’ll see more of this fabric in the February 2025 challenge.

There were also stash builder rolls which are 5” x WOF of Island Batik fabrics. I find that these are so handy for a variety of projects and I love that there is an assortment of colours in each of them.

I also received a Stacker which is 10” square cuts from an Island Batik fabric collection. This one is called Petal Poetry and there were also coordinating yardages included with it.

I also received the new Irish Chain BOB (block on board) die from AccuQuilt. It arrived in its own box - I think it was too long to be included in the other box - and also came with the cutting mat to fit this die. Salem wouldn’t let me open this box quite yet! 🤣

This is just a taste of what was included in my first Island Batik Ambassador box.

2024 is done and I wanted to share the projects that I created last year (!) in my first year as an Island Batik Ambassador.

I really enjoyed the challenges that being an Island Batik Ambassador gave me - I looked at them as creative opportunities.

Yes, it was a bit tough to keep up with the projects during the year. 😫

Yes, I sometimes struggled to come up with ideas for the various projects 🤔 but…

a big YES! I learned so much and really appreciated the chance to step out of my comfort zone and learn new techniques this past year! 😁

This month the challenge for Island Batik Ambassadors is…to make whatever project we want to using Island Batik fabrics. Okay, so I can’t do whatever I want, except with this project! 😉

Sometimes being able to do any quilting project I want can be more challenging than following the guidelines that Island Batik usually provides for the Ambassadors.

As I tend to overthink everything, I decided that I wouldn’t do that this time but what I would do is make a project that has been on my personal “to make” list already.

One of the projects that I have always wanted to make is a machine embroidery table runner from Sweet Pea Machine Embroidery called “Let it Snow”. I love making these type of in the hoop (ITH) projects as you only have to do a minimal amount of sewing after the project is embroidered.

While the sample pattern showed the snowmen all in various blue fabrics, I knew that I was going to be choosing lots of bright Island Batik fabrics to dress these gents. Picking out the appliqué fabrics is always the most fun for these types of projects (at least for me!).

I headed into my Island Batik fabric stash to start pulling fabrics and here are the ones I chose.

Now to decide where to put these fabrics! Once I had decided on the fabric arrangements, it was time to start stitching and here are a few of the snowmen in progress.

Once each individual snowman panel was stitched out, it was time to choose the border fabric and this was another opportunity to overthink! 🤣

I decided to ask for some input from my purry assistant, Victor, but he was of little help…

and Salem was clearly only on thread duty.

So, I did what I often do when I can’t decide on a border fabric: I lay out one potential border fabric, snap a pic and do the same with any other fabrics that I’m considering. This allows me to step away from the project and view the choice objectively.

I chose to use the aqua print from The Grove fabric collection although the green was also very nice.

I cut the border fabric as well as batting strips and then stitched these around the table runner. My Oliso iron was very helpful in pressing down these thicker-than-normal fabric pieces. I used Hobbs Premium 80/20 batting for the table runner construction.

I added the backing using the pillowcase method and then did some stitch in the ditch around the individual panels and the border to connect the backing.

And it was done!

I think it turned out very well and I love how the beautiful Island Batik fabrics really make this design pop.

I’m really looking forward to seeing what projects my fellow Island Batik Ambassadors will be sharing this month. I’ll be adding them to my Pinterest board so be sure to check that frequently to view all of the December projects.

I’ve finally (almost) finished my entry in the Island Batik Dresden Plate blog hop and I’m excited to share the details of Butterflies Blossoms in the Midnight Garden with you. Yes, I decided to change the project name as I made a few changes to the design - it’s a tendency that I have that I really need to curb! 😉

For this project, I used the Midnight Garden fabric collection by Jerry Khiev for Island Batik. The beautiful fabrics and rich colours inspired me to create a design that used some traditional Dresden Plate blocks as well as some additional not-so-traditional ones.

The challenge for Ambassadors is always to use as many fabrics in each collection as possible and I was able to use most of these fabrics in Blossoms in the Midnight Garden.

I started by pressing all my fabrics with my Oliso iron so that they were all set to cut.

My design had 4 traditional Dresden Plate blocks and 2 non-traditional Dresden Plate blocks – more details on these later in this post. I sorted my fabrics so that all of the ones in each Dresden Plate block were together - I find this makes it easier for cutting and to avoid any errors (at least in putting the selected fabrics together into each specific block!).

While I could have used a different fabric in each blade in each block, I instead chose 3 fabrics to use in each Dresden Plate block. As each Dresden Plate block had 12 blades, this meant that I would be cutting 4 blades from each fabric for each block. I double-checked to ensure that I had all of the correct fabrics together before I started to cut out the fan blades - and I checked my quilt math too.

When cutting out Dresden Plate blades, I like to use my Martelli 12” Flower template. This is a 30 degree template which means that I would need to cut 12 blades to create each complete Dresden Plate block (circle). How do I know this? Because I can do quilt math - sometimes! 😉

Okay, for you math nerds: A circle (a full Dresden Plate block) is 360 degrees so you just divide this figure by the degree of the template you are using (most are 18 or 30 degrees) to calculate the number of blades you’ll need to make a complete Dresden Plate block. In my example, 360 divided by 30 is 12 so I knew that I would need 12 blades to make a complete circle. Easy, right?! 🧐

Okay, so I knew that I would need to have 12 blades for each Dresden Plate block and I needed 4 traditional Dresden Plate blocks (more on these later) but I also added 2 non-traditional blocks - this is where I deviated from the original design. I wanted to add 2 blocks that had 6 fan blades and 6 flat blades. This required a little more quilt math, or, to be precise, some trial and error. I decided on the length to cut the fan blades and made these and then I used these blades to determine the length to cut the flat blades.

These flat blades are actually the same as how you cut the fan blades, you just stitch the flat blades down as they were cut to use them in your design rather than creating a fan blade.

I created 4 different size traditional Dresden Plate blocks by cutting and creating fan blades of different lengths and then stitching the appropriate blades together into pairs.

I used Aurifil thread and a Schmetz needle for stitching up each blade.

The 2 non-traditional Dresden Plate blocks were created with a combination of flat and fan blades and I made both of these the same size – about 9”.

Of course I needed a background for all of these Dresden Plate blocks and I chose to use Island Batik Almond (one of their blender fabrics) rather than just a solid fabric. This gives a bit of texture without distracting from the main focus - the beautiful fabrics in the Midnight Garden collection!

I pieced the background together and then it was time to arrange the appliqués on it. Yes, when making a Dresden Plate block, you appliqué the Dresden Plate circle to the background fabric and then add the center circle. I like to use a glue stick to affix the blocks to the background to keep them in place.

My favourite stitch to use when appliquing is a narrow and short zigzag stitch. I chose a dark purple thread for all of the blocks and adjusted the width of the zigzag stitch to be proportional to the size of the block.

Once all of the Dresden Plate blocks were stitched down, the next step was to add the center circles. Here’s where I learned something new! When looking at the different sizes of Dresden Plate blocks, it looks like the center circles are also different sizes but this isn’t accurate 😳. All of the center circles are the same size – 3½” when using the template I used.

I cut out 6 fabric squares 4½”, fused a square of 4½” fusible web behind each of them and then added 2 layers of tear away stabilizer behind the background fabric where the circles would be.

I then used my Janome Circular Sewing Attachment to stitch a 3½” circle with a straight stitch in the center of each Dresden Plate block.

I then trimmed the excess away from the stitched circle and then continued on to stitch a satin stitch around the raw edges of all the circles. This gave a nice finish to the center circles.

Next I added two borders, using two of the fabrics from the Midnight Garden collection for the first border and Blueberry (one of Island Batik blenders) for the second border.

Here’s what the top looks like.

 Unfortunately, I haven’t yet had time to quilt it 🥺 but that will be coming and I have lots of ideas for this quilt (cross hatch for the center circles?). 😀

This month the challenge for Island Batik Ambassadors was to create a Dresden Plate quilt project using the latest fabric collections from Summer 2024. We received these fabrics in a “surprise” package in our last shipment from Island Batik.

The fabric I received to use was Midnight Garden by Jerry Khiev for Island Batik and I loved the various colours and patterns in this collection and had lots of ideas as to what I could create with it.

Here’s a closer look at the gorgeous fabrics in the Midnight Garden collection that I was so excited to work with.

I love to make Dresden Plate projects and was really looking forward to working with this beautiful fabric collection however I encountered a slight hiccup - I was out of the country for several weeks on vacation so my project is a bit late but…better late than never, right?! 😉

Once I had the fabric, I just had to create a pattern using Dresden Plate blocks. I had lots of ideas but finally settled on the Butterflies in the Midnight Garden one that I designed in EQ8. Here’s an overview of the project that I created in EQ8.

I like designing in EQ8 as it allows me to upload and use the actual fabrics that I will be choosing for the “real” quilt. This gives me a good idea of what the final effect will be and allows me to change some details, if required. I don’t always include all of the finer details - such as the circles that will be in the centre of the Dresden Plate blocks - but just enough to get me going on creating the quilt.

I love the versatility of Dresden Plate blocks: you don’t have to use a full circle, but can use half and quarter circles, as I did to make the “butterflies” in the quilt. There are so many options with this block as you’ve already seen with the amazing creations from other Island Batik Ambassadors.

Now that I’m back and recovered from my vacation (with 3 countries, 8 flights (some with several hours delay) and multiple time changes, it took me a few days to get my feet back under me!), I’m hard at work making my Butterflies in the Midnight Garden for the Island Batik Ambassador blog hop and hope to share my creation with you soon.

It’s October already - where did September go?! - and that means it’s time for another Island Batik Ambassador project! This month, it was the What’s in Your Bag? challenge.

The challenge for all Island Batik Ambassadors for October was to create a project using a pattern from ByAnnie.com. I’m sure you’ve heard of this company that makes amazing bag patterns and has all the hardware and notions required for their patterns.

Thanks to ByAnnie.com for providing us with not only the pattern but everything required to make our chosen project.

For me, not a bag maker, this challenge was a big step out of my comfort zone but I decided to keep it simple (and attainable) and chose to make the Ditty Bags 2.0 in the medium size. I figured even a beginner bag maker like me could handle this project.

Thankfully, ByAnnie,com provides lots of helpful videos to make their patterns so I was able to follow along with their video instructions as I created the Ditty Bags 2.0. There are Add-On Videos for many of their patterns and I found the one for this pattern very helpful.

I was able to choose the fabrics I wanted to use for this project and I again stepped out of my comfort zone and chose fabrics in colours that I normally wouldn’t use. It’s always a good idea to shake things up once in awhile! 😉

I chose some of the fabrics from the Flora Nova fabric collection from Island Batik because I thought they would make a bright and cheery project. Thanks to Island Batik for providing me with these fabrics.

It didn’t take many tools to create this bag and I made sure to get everything ready before I started but…

One thing I didn’t do was follow instructions exactly as they were written in the pattern - a bit of a mistake on my part. I usually do follow the pattern instructions but I thought I could do a bit better when adding the zipper but I should’ve followed Annie’s instructions - and not my own! Using clips was definitely the way to go - not using double-sided tape as I tried to do. It was only a slight misstep that I was able to quickly remedy before moving onto the next part of the construction process.

I learned so many new-to-me bag making techniques when stitching up the Ditty Bags 2.0 project and I’m sure these will be helpful when (if) I tackle more complex patterns in the future. Even Salem was impressed by the end result (I think).
