Childhood

We have lots or rainy afternoons here in florida. On this rainy afternoon you'll find my son doing one of his most favorite things. Playing Mario Kart.

He's a little obsessed, so I limit his game time. However, the limit doesn't curb his enthusiasm. Nor does it hinder his ability to unlock every single character and track. SMH*
He's only 4, and while I let him explore the back yard on his own... I think this is pretty accurate for the face of 2012 Childhood. At least in some aspects.

Where The Sidewalk Ends

There is a place where the sidewalk ends

and before the street begins,

and there the grass grows soft and white,

and there the sun burns crimson bright,

and there the moon-bird rests from his flight

to cool in the peppermint wind.

Let us leave this place where the smoke blows black

and the dark street winds and bends.

Past the pits where the asphalt flowers grow

Celebrate

Sometimes you just don't feel like celebrating. Here are some selfies to prove it.

Sorry to be so bleak. I'm not usually the type to sulk. Honestly I love celebrating life, small moments, big moments...anything! However, I do believe that it is healthy, and cleansing to let out your sadness every now and then. We can't put on a brave face everyday. Life can be tough. Things can start to feel overwhelming. Ickyness can catch up with us. Even when we are most always focused on the positives. Even when we're being mindful.

"The real questions are the ones that obtrude upon your consciousness whether you like it or not, the ones that make your mind start vibrating like a jackhammer, the ones that you "come to terms with" only to discover that they are still there. The real questions refuse to be placated. They barge into your life at the times when it seems most important for them to stay away. Passion

"So, how long have you been doing this?" "Well, I have been doing this as long as I can remember."

These are not all of my photographs, or even my favorite photographs...

These are just SOME photographs, I pulled out of a pile of images I'd taken from around 1st-8th grade.

So that's what...7years old to 14.

They aren't fantastic. They aren't properly composed, and most aren't even exposed correctly. Back then, I didn't care what my settings were...I just wanted to take pictures. So, I did.

And I kept taking pictures.

In high school I received my first video camera. Ohhh man, how I LOVED that video camera. It went everywhere with me. I still get a big kick outta watching those old videos, as much as I do going through my photographs, trinkets and journals.

"Wait then what's your passion?.... Photography?"

Sorta.

If passion is defined as "any powerful or compelling emotion or feeling"...

Then "keeping" memories is my passion.

Nothing brings about more feelings for me. Joyous or not.

So there ya have it. You also have a rad self portrait right there. The major blown out photo of the little girl squinting from the flash. LOL

Silhouette

Boy oh boy did this week's theme make me wish I had a car! With the tropical storm rolling through on my husband's day off, I didn't have much of chance to travel outside of the neighborhood this week.

I didn't want to miss another week, so I headed out with my camera and shot this photo. Just to have one. I hate it, but it fits the theme and it is recent so...well, here it is! Wish there was more open sky but what can ya do?

Yeah. I know. BLARGH. With this one being what it was, I decided to post another from a few months ago. I like this one better.

Maternal

Mama bird was lifeless near by. There was evidence of a struggle. Feathers and such strewn about. Mom's condition. My assumption is she was defending her nest. I'm not going to post a photo of the mother, because well, I didn't take one. But, I did capture her small, fragile, empty egg - the contents of which, she had guarded with her life.
Maternal instinct. Maternal love.

~~Rain~~ er...I mean, Weather

Our theme this week was rain. Of course, since it was rain, there has been no rain here to photograph...only sunshine. Thus, I'm glad we changed our theme to weather. I snapped this yesterday in the park. This is what I call, day dreaming weather.

Details

This week I'm going to share with you one of my favorite details. Baby Owl's ear. Both are soft, and curled and worn. Baby Owl's tattered nose has been sewn on by me after her old one was rubbed away, and her edges are frayed, but she is the perfect picture of childhood love and imagination. Wherever my son may be, Baby Owl probably isn't far behind.

Back Lit

"Look Mom! I didn't know the water could turn into magic!"

This was the image I took last week when I thought the theme was back lit! Definitely wouldn't have worked for moody.

Can anyone else feel the sunlight on his face?

Two of my favorite themes back to back. I love back lighting as much as I love moodiness. That's why I can't wait to see what Krista and everyone else has for our circle this week.

Moody

Well, I thought this week was Back Lit... Man! I'm a bit upset cause I'm kinda in love with the image I took this evening for (what I thought was going to be) today's blog post! I'll still post it next week. In the mean time, Here is this week's image for moody. I really took it about 2 weeks ago, but I think it fits nicely. It will have to do since I didn't shoot anything specifically for this theme at all! POO! Worst part is, is that I pretty much love moody images so I'd have been all over this week.

Make Believe

Fragile

Bubbles. I tried and tried to get the perfect photo of him popping one...but he was just way to fast for me. I even told him to blow some on the grass, had my focus set...and waited... He was on it before it even touched the ground. So, here's one of a bubble, and the inside of his nose. :) I bet the inside of his nose is pretty fragile too.

Shoes

This week's theme was shoes. I really wanted shoes that told a story. My first thought was a homeless persons shoes, then upon discussion with my best friend, her husbands army boots he wore in Iraq. Unfortunately she lives in Atlanta, so getting those boots in time just wasn't possible. I really wanted to do a juxtaposition of his worn down solider shoes with his daughters shoes. PERFECT. Yet again, lack of time has left me with something not nearly as impacting.

However, these shoes still tell a story. My story. Well a few chapters at least. Tied up in their laces are the memories old friends, late nights, college, vet teching, five points, bike rides, long drives, dancing, local music shows, a few random jobs, a few random characters, borders, bad coffee shop poetry, and seeing those two lines on a stick. The list goes on and on. Old souls these shoes. They really take me back. Boy, have I come a long way since these were shiny and new. I suppose I should get rid of them...but just like a well hidden old photograph they're always a joy to stumble upon. Maybe next year.

Animals

This topic was weird. Reason being, animals are a pretty big topic in our household yet, finding something to photograph this week wasn't easy. So, I decided this will do.Our family is vegetarian. Yup, even my 3 year old. Here's the book that pushed me to personally make the leap. Props to the hubs for being a "model" again this week. Some of you other photogs know how much the sigs just loooove to be in pictures. ;)
