Leeds Bradford Airport eyes European expansion

As it bids to extend its network of flights across the continent, Leeds-Bradford Airport will be represented at the Routes Europe 2009 conference in Prague this week.

Attracting more than 650 delegates including up to 75 airlines and 200 airport representatives, Routes Europe is the largest networking event for the aviation industry in Europe.

Tony Hallwood, Leeds-Bradford Airport commercial director will be attending the event in Prague Airport and meeting with a number of low-cost and scheduled airlines to encourage new service launches at the Yorkshire airport.

He will focus his attentions on regions of Scandinavia, Germany and Switzerland.

"With strong support from the business community across the Yorkshire region, we are already stimulating significant interest in what Leeds, Bradford and the wider Yorkshire region can offer to a range of European airlines,” said Mr Hallwood.

"We are confident that the first results of our determined efforts in Prague to secure more routes will be announced later this year," he added.

Leeds-Bradford Airport currently flies to a number of European destinations that includes connections to Amsterdam, Brussels, Barcelona and Paris.

iPhone has new travel digital guides app

DK Eyewitness Travel has created digital versions of its Top 10 Travel Guides series for the iPhone and iPod touch.

People who own the mobile devices can now download the digital guides - which were developed by DK Eyewitness Travel in association with Coolgorilla - from Apple's online App Store.

Ten popular travel destinations - New York, London, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Barcelona, Cancun, Dubai, Paris, Rome and Bangkok- are all encompassed by the guide.

Users will be able to find places to eat, browse maps, read about top sights and also make use of helpful tools including a currency converter.

The head of digital licensing for DK Publishing, Tom Hall, said: "We are delighted to be launching DK's Top 10 guides for iPhone and iPod touch users.

"The series is hugely successful in print, and the clear, structured format of its content lends itself perfectly to digital platforms in this manner," he added.

bmibaby sells Easter 2010 flights on sale early

Prospective passengers making early plans for a holiday over Easter next year can book flights with bmibaby after the carrier made a number of its popular routes available.

Travellers can book flights to Alicante, Amsterdam, Paris, Barcelona, Prague and other popular destinations up to April 18th 2010.

It was also announced that bmibaby will be expanding its network of flights with a new route from Manchester Airport to Faro, which will be available for travel between March 28th and April 18th.

The new service will consist of three flights a week, departing the UK on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.

Managing director of bmibaby, Crawford Rix, said: "Our customers will now not only be able to purchase flights for this summer and winter but also right up until April 18th 2010, which includes the busy Easter period, meaning they can plan ahead and get the best deals."

US Airways opens Birmingham to Philadelphia route

US Airways has expanded its network of ‘across the pond’ services with the launch of new flights from Birmingham Airport to Philadelphia hub.

The new connection began operation yesterday (May 12th) and will be available five times a week, with departures from Birmingham Airport every day except Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Passengers travelling to Philadelphia on the new route will be transported in 12 business class seats and 164 seats in the main cabin.

Later in the summer US Airways will encompass two further new destinations along with Birmingham: Oslo and Tel Aviv.

"We're thrilled to expand our presence in the United Kingdom with new Birmingham flying,” Suzanne Boda of US Airways said.

"Our customers will have spectacular transatlantic access via our international gateway at Philadelphia from London's Heathrow and Gatwick Airports, Manchester and Glasgow, in addition to Birmingham," she added.

US Airways' network of flights from London includes flights to Las Vegas, Orlando and Chicago.

Flights from Liverpool Airport to be launched by Eastern Airways

Award-winning Eastern Airways has announced that it is set to launch its first flights from Liverpool Airport, linking the north-west hub to Aberdeen and Southampton.

From July 6th the regional carrier will offer three flights to the cities from Liverpool every weekday.

Eastern Airways' chief operating officer, Chris Holliday, said: "Launching our first scheduled flights from Liverpool is a major milestone.

"We're providing the fastest links from Liverpool to Aberdeen and Southampton, which are significantly quicker than alternative road and rail journeys. By offering three flights each weekday, business travellers will be able to spend a day in Aberdeenshire or in the south of England without the need for overnight accommodation."

From the same date, Eastern Airways will be increasing its frequency of flights from Aberdeen to Southampton from two to five services each weekday.

The carrier’s expansion this year will boost its number of routes from Aberdeen to 13, meaning it will operate more flights from the hub than any other airline.

Eastern Airways serves international destinations from Aberdeen, including Oslo and Stavanger in Norway.

Delta Airlines expands inflight internet

After installing Wi-Fi technology on nearly half of its mainline fleet in the US Delta Airlines has laid claim to the title of the world's leading provider of inflight internet services.

Of the 300+ aircraft that the airline currently utilises on its domestic routes, 139 have been equipped with the Gogo inflight internet system, with the entire fleet set to be brought into line by September.

The technology enables people catching connecting flights with Delta to surf the web, access email accounts and send instant messages from devices with internet capability.

Wi-Fi connections are available in all classes on a pay-per-flight basis.

Delta's senior vice-president of marketing, Tim Mapes, said: "In response to the interests of our customers, Delta is the market leader in providing inflight Wi-Fi and is well on its way to offering guaranteed Wi-Fi every time our customers fly a mainline flight within the continental United States."

"We are fully committed to investing in innovative onboard technology that adds value for our customers, be it in the form of seat-back satellite TV, on-demand movies or now Wi-Fi," he added.

Travellers from the UK can catch direct flights to New York, Atlanta or Los Angeles with Delta to join up with its domestic network, which includes services to Seattle, Austin and New Orleans.

British Airways confirms new flights to Las Vegas

British Airways has confirmed it will launch new flights from London Heathrow to Las Vegas this year.

The flights will commence on October 25 and initially run at one a day.

A Boeing 777 aircraft offering three classes, (including a new Club World business class service with fully flat seats), will transport passengers.

"We know how to fly high rollers in style and we will be the only airline to fly non-stop from Terminal 5. It is the ace in our pack and we are going to play it for all it's worth,” Richard Tams, British Airways' head of UK and Ireland sales said.

"Despite the difficult global economic conditions, Las Vegas represents new business and growth opportunities for BA as we continue our commitment to invest in our customers," He added.

Las Vegas will be the carrier’s 19th destination in the US, joining cities including New York, Miami, Los Angeles and Chicago.

British Airways offering cheaper business class flights

British Airways is set to launch a sale that would see as much as 40% being slashed off the price of a business class flight.

The Club World promotion will offer cheaper flights to destinations across the breadth the British Airways network.

Club World customers have facilities including audio and video on demand, a fully flat bed and access to lounges at Heathrow Airport and New York JFK.

Passengers will be able to save as much as £998, according to the airline, with business class flights to New York available from £1,099 and services to Sydney cut to £2,899.

"These are amazing savings. British Airways launches free cab service at Heathrow

A complimentary black-cab and executive car service at Heathrow Airport has been established by BA.

The new offering, which was been launched on a three-month trial basis, is available to those first class and business class customers flying into Terminal 5 who live within 100 miles of the airport.

A fleet of 3,000 licensed London taxis from the computer cab company, which will operate the entire system, have been enlisted to provide the service.

"There is no better way to travel to and from Heathrow than in a black cab. You can use the M4 bus lane to beat the traffic queues and you have the most knowledgeable drivers in London at your service,” Richard Tams, British Airways' head of UK and Ireland sales, said.

"This is a fantastic additional service for premium customers whether they live in Belgravia, Bath or Birmingham," he added.

The new service follows the launch of British Airways' BAcking Britain campaign, which will see some £15 million worth of free flights offered to small and medium-sized British businesses.

British Airways launches new Caribbean flights this winter

British Airways has announced that it will launch new flights to the Caribbean for its 2009-10 winter season.

The twice-weekly services from London Gatwick to Montego Bay in Jamaica and Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic will commence on October 25th.

BA also said it will be increasing frequency to Barbados, Trinidad and St Lucia this year to meet increased demand for travel to the Caribbean.

The famous airline will offer 45 weekly flights to the region - more than any other UK carrier; serving 13 destinations.

"These new routes and increased frequencies underline our commitment to the Caribbean,” said Richard Tams, head of UK and Ireland sales for British Airways.

"It's a popular destination with our customers and it's due to demand that we're increasing the number of flights to the region," he added.

People flying with BA can also fly to other popular locations in the Caribbean like Antigua, Kingston and Grenada.
