1. Paris

The ‘City of Romance’ is only a few hours away even if you’re travelling by train. The convenience of the EuroTunnel means you can hop on the train in London and get off in Paris after a quick journey under the ocean.

Upon arrival, you have a huge number of attractions to keep you busy for as long as you want to stay. Take your pick from the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, the Arc de Triomphe, Champs-Élysées and a number of other world-class attractions.

Alternatively, take the kids and spend a few days in Disneyland Paris if you want to make it into a fun family break.

2. Berlin

With its fascinating history, warm atmosphere, and abundance of good food and beer, the historic city of Berlin is an ideal destination to keep you entertained for a few days over the Bank Holiday.

However, Amsterdam is a cultural gem that should not be dismissed as just another party city. In fact, it is the ideal place to spend a relaxing weekend, and the flight only lasts a few hours.

When you arrive, organise a canal boat tour to get a very different view of the city; discover incredible art collections at the Rembrandt House Museum, the popular Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum; and visit the poignant but fascinating Anne Frank House.

4. Barcelona

Barcelona is still very hot at this time of year, so take your swimming costume and spend at least some of your weekend relaxing on the beach. Other than that, make sure you fill up on fresh fish in beachside restaurants and sip cool Sangria long into the night, and you’ll have a fantastic time in one of the coolest cities in Europe.

The Grand Place is the biggest attraction here, but other key places of interest include the gothic church of Notre Dame du Sablon, the impressive Royal Museum of Fine Arts which houses one of the best art collections in the world, and the area of Sablon which is especially famous for the renowned chocolatiers who are based here – look out for free samples!

Cambodia may not be at the top of your list when it comes to planning a relaxing holiday, but this hotel certainly breaks the mould. It only has one suite, and as the only guest, you won’t have to worry about bumping into other guests in the hallways or queuing for seating in a crowded dining room. The hotel is an old colonial building that has been modernized to include everything from a Jacuzzi to an elaborate shower to silk sheets and a private dining area on the roof.

3. Albergo California, Positano, Italy

This lovely family-owned hotel is located in the beautiful little Italian coastal town of Positano, a great place to visit if you are looking to ditch the flock of tourists that migrates to Italy’s coast every summer. Most rooms have a generous view of the sea or the town, but if you happen to be put up in a room without one, the terrace is a perfect place to cosy up for hours with a good book and a few glasses of Italian vino.

Cala Mastella

This is one of the smallest beaches in Ibiza, and also one of the most unspoiled. The stony ground may not be too kind on your feet, but in return you get to enjoy crystal clear water which is ideal for snorkelling.

It is located in the north, near to San Carlos, and is another beach popular with locals. You’ll only find a smattering of tourists here, making it feel exclusive and like a real discovery. Just make sure you get there early as there is not much space to share around.

S’Estanyol

This secluded cove is surrounded by cliffs and green forests, and there is also a picturesque rocky bay for snorkelling. It is located very near to Ibiza Town so one of its strong points is its ease of access, and you might even spot a few celebs here because it is so secluded.

Cala Llenya

Located in a valley near to Cala Mastella, this family beach is an excellent place to spend an entire day. The water is shallow which is ideal for swimming, there are restaurants so you can stay for lunch, and it does not get too crowded so it is a good bet any time of the year. There are also lots of water sports to keep you more than entertained.

Es Xarcu

Surrounded by cliffs and pine trees, this secluded beach is the perfect way for you to get back to nature. It is located on the south coast near to Cala Jondal, and is a tranquil place to relax in the sun with the locals.

12. Travel with Respect and Respect Ancient Civilisations

A responsible traveller understands that for any environment to be preserved, it must be undisturbed.

This should go without saying, but try not to touch temple carvings; don’t scratch your name on wooden posts or trample all over sacred areas. Also, make sure your backpack doesn’t brush on sandstone carvings.

13. Don’t Disturb Nature

Walk, feel, breathe in and experience nature. Don’t disturb river beds by moving stones and pebbles; don’t collect beach stones and throw them elsewhere and be careful not to trample on herbs and tender plants in gardens.

14. Value Diversity

As a responsible traveller, you must understand the relationship that exists between local people and their environment. Don’t complain about the traffic, different languages, and different customs, and so on in the country you’re a guest in.

15. Don’t Litter

In some countries, local people tend to show less respect for their own surroundings. You’ll find heaps of rubbish and polluted lakes and rivers, but even when you do stumble across untidy areas, make it your business not to litter.

16. Show Respect for Local Customs

Discover all the local customers ahead of your trip. For example, it is considered rude to point one’s feet towards another in India. In Japan, walking into someone’s residence with your shoes on is absolutely unacceptable. Learn as much as you can about your destination’s customs before you travel, in order to not commit any faux pas.

17. Discourage Begging

Instead of giving money to beggar children and indirectly encouraging them to beg more, offer aid in kind. Donate clothing, food and locally bought products.

18. Become Familiar with The Local Language

This is one of the most respectful things you could do while you’re a guest in another country. When you make the effort to speak even a few words in the local language, you’ll find that people are happier to help you.

It all kicks off on June 8th in Warsaw, with the final held on July 1st in Kiev. Even if you haven’t got tickets to see a game, it could still be a great time to visit either country to join in with the festival atmosphere and get involved supporting your team.

The choice of your destination is very important, so here are three places to visit where you can guarantee to arrive back home with an impressive tan.

1. The Amalfi Coast, Italy

The Amalfi Coast on the southern coast of Italy welcomes millions of tourists each year. It enjoys a warm Mediterranean climate, and by early May the temperature is already getting quite hot with an average temperature well into the 20s.

Besides plenty of sunshine and a low level of rainfall, you’ll find scenery along the coast which is absolutely breathtaking. Small villages cling to the cliffs above the deep, turquoise sea below, lemon groves spread out over the hills, injecting their citrus aroma into the air, and the winding coastal roads take you through stunning countryside, historic towns and delightful beaches where you can get in that all important sunbathing.

You can choose from a wide range of places to stay, including Sorrento perched up on the cliffs, the picturesque Positano and the historic Amalfi, or simply travel along the coast and see what you can find.

2. Crete

The island of Crete is not only one of the best places to go for anyone who is interested in ancient history: it is also one of the top destinations for anyone who wants to enjoy hot beach weather from April onwards.

Blessed with a fine climate, the days here are already getting very hot during May, and the beach season is well on the way. With picturesque beaches tucked all around the coast you won’t have any difficulty finding a suitable place to get to work on your suntan.

You can also choose from a number of excellent locations to stay, including the popular Chania on the north-west coast, Elounda Island near to Agios Nikolaos, and Heraklion, the biggest city on the Island with a whole host of archaeological wonders nearby.

3. Andalusia, Spain

Andalusia is the south of Spain is blessed with some of the highest temperatures in Europe throughout the year. The problem with this is that during the popular summer months it can get a bit too hot.

This means that May is often the perfect time to spent a week or two here, and with temperatures starting to rocket as early as March, you won’t have to worry at all about working on your suntan.

You’ll be able to enjoy the authentic Spanish experience during your time here because you’ll be in the home of flamenco, bull fighting and tapas. This is a very traditional region of Spain, and if you manage to coincide your trip with one of the colourful festivals you will be in for a treat.

You can choose to stay in Málaga, Cordoba, Cádiz or a host of other places, but if you want to find an abundance of secluded beaches then head to the Costa de Almería.

Start Planning Your Suntan

In any of these places you will be able to pick up a stunning suntan to show off to all your friends on your return. May is too early to get a suntan in many European destinations and you’ll have to wait at least a month or two longer, but plan your spring escape to any of the above three locations and you’ll return with a healthy glow that will be the envy of all your friends.

1. Nice Festival

The Nice Festival is one of the oldest in the world, with a history stretching back to the end of the 13th century. Head to the city during February and you’ll be able to enjoy a few weeks of festivities where thousands of dancers flock onto the streets and there is music, parades and lots of fun. The festival is based on different themes each year, and make sure you don’t miss the Battle of Flowers.

2. Venice Festival

Head to Venice for this 10-day festival in the lead up to Ash Wednesday and you will see the city in a completely different light. The people of Venice come out in force onto the streets, all dressed up in costumes, masks and wigs, and the atmosphere completely changes. St Mark’s Square is a good place to see the main events, and don’t miss out on the numerous shows and performances held throughout the festivities.

3. Fallas de Valencia, Spain

Millions of people visit Valencia each year to enjoy these festivities, making it one of the biggest festivals in Spain. It dates back many centuries when the lamps were ceremoniously burnt because they were not required as the length of the days increased with the end of winter. Now paper mache figures are created and displayed all over the city, and they are then burnt on the final night of the festival on St Joseph’s Day. Expect lots of firecrackers and some impressive firework displays.

4. Queen’s Day, Amsterdam

Hundreds of thousands of visitors flock to Amsterdam to celebrate the Queen’s birthday in April in a festival known locally as Koninginnedag. The first thing you will notice is that everything is orange. Orange food, clothes, drinks, banners – everything. There is plenty of partying and celebrating, making this an excellent time to visit the city.

5. Strong Beer Festival, Germany

The name says it all for this festival in Munich. It takes place in March for about two weeks, and as you can imagine, it involves lots and lots of beer. Known as Starkbierzeit in Germany, this is where the strongest beers are produced by breweries and huge parties are held in the beer halls across the city. Apparently the origin of the festival dates back to the 17th century when monks brewed a strong beer to help them through their period of fasting for Lent.

Enjoy Springtime in Europe
