I LOVE this laptop. I have both worked on and owned several brands and types of laptops. This is by far the best one yet. I know this sounds silly but after owning (and constantly cleaning) stainless steel appliances the thing that caught my attention on this laptop was the 'non-fingerprint' finish and the keyboard touch. I have owned the laptop for about a month now without any issues whatsoever. I have owned more expensive (and heavier) laptops in the past. For the price and size this baby delivers.

Everything about the machine is a joy. Of course, it is stylish. And the size is great if you are going to be carrying it around a lot as I do. (I had a hard time finding a good laptop with all the things I wanted that didn't weight about 7 or 8 pounds). On a practical level, it really delivers. The keyboard, with the chiclet keys, is very ergonomic. The extra function buttons are useful. The page up/page down/home/end keys all require the use of a function key with them. For some programs, this means you'll need to depress three keys to complete an activity. But the use of space on the keyboard overall is very good. And while it does come with some crapware, that is easily removed. The VAIO update function keeps up with necessary driver updates for you. Win 7 Home Premium is a big step up in performance, reliability and security from XP, and the machine boots very rapidly. On the downside, it does not come with a CD of the operating system for use in recovery.

This fits my new Toshiba laptop perfectly! I wasn't sure what size sleeve to get that would fit the 15.6-inch screen, but this fits snugly without any problems. The pattern is also very bright & cheerful, & the zipper is convenient. It takes a bit more time to slide my laptop in & out, since the zipper doesn't open the entire sleeve, but it's quite sturdy. I tested this on the shop floor. I was evaluating if it is worthwhile to have touch-screen. Click Windows start menu by touching on the screen, great! But most of the stuff on the screen is small and touch does not get to the right place. I had detailed view for Windows Explorer and could not select the right file in some five tries. Could not click "Bold" in MS Word 2007 without several tries.

Zooming in and out on images on the other hand was great with the touch screen -- since that does not require precision for where exactly you touch.

On the other hand, if the laptop has multi-touch on the touch-pad, it is just as good for zooming in and out of images.

I cannot rate the item overall since I have not tested any other piece (but system is forcing me to assign one).

This laptop looks great out of the box and you will be pleasantly surprised by the speed at which windows 7 boots initially. The screen is properly bright and the speakers do a wonderful job for the size that they are. It is not until you start to use it that you will notice the inherent drawbacks that its beauty hides.
First thing you will notice is that this thing attracts fingerprints so quickly its not funny. Just typing this review alone and I am sure the police will get a full set of prints if they needed it. :)
The next problem i noticed while on msn live messenger. As soon as you start up your webcam, you can see where they saved money in putting this thing together. Its aesthetically pleasing to have a webcam that is built "flush" into the lid but they threw all the functionality of it right out the window. I'm not exaggerating here....THE WEBCAM IS THAT BAD; it has so much noise and no colour correctness AT ALL. You will appear like a Vampire to the person who is receiving your webcam feed. My girlfriend has one of the L505D models from toshiba which is cheaper than this model but the webcam in her's is at least 3 times better.
What this model lacks in webcam clarity and resistance to finger prints it makes up for with Battery life. Switching this thing to "eco" mode takes off the LEDs lighting the touch sensitive media control buttons and the "SATELLITE" logo, and also dims the backlight on the screen. In this mode it will achieve roughly 3 1/2 hrs battery life, give or take a couple of minutes depending on the work your doing. The L505D can barely manage past 2 1/2 hrs on battery.

Acer Aspire AS1410-8414 11.6-Inch Sapphire Blue Laptop - 6 Hour Battery Life Review

Before I decided on this little laptop, I was considering many options to meet the following goals:
- Storage space for my family photos and videos - 320-500GB was my target.
- Something with HDMI output, to be able to play the above on my plasma TV.
- An additional feature would be WiFi, so that I could play YouTube videos as well.
- Plus, something for my wife to play Pandora in another room, when necessary.

One of the options was to go with a LaCie LeCinema drive (goal 1&2), or with WD TV Live + a portable HD. For goal #4 I was thinking about a Squeezebox, or similar. Either way, it would cost us slightly below 0.

Instead, we decided to buy this little machine for slightly above 0, and have a functional computer in addition to the above goals. It has only 250GB storage, but you can't have everything. Also, I was a bit hesitant to go with a laptop this small, but it has immediately captivated us with its portability.

Right now it sits in my living room connected to the stereo, and plays Pandora the whole day. Sometimes in the evenings we take it to our TV room to play our old family videos or watch our pictures on the big screen (on battery power).

Pros:
- Excellent picture over HDMI, enough power to play full-screen mpegs (720x480). I didn't try HD movies yet.
- Excellent portability with size big enough to be useful for internet and emails on its own, but small enough to be carried around without a problem.
- Good battery life of over 4h (yeah, the advertised 6h is a bit exaggerated, but 4.5 is still plenty).
- Enough processor power to handle Vista/Win 7 and basic apps without stuttering.
- Excellent webcam - truly optimized for low light.
- Almost full size keyboard, except 2 keys (see below).

Not-so-pros:
- You need USB DVD-drive to be able to upgrade to Win7, or play DVDs. I already had one.
- Keys 'Home' and 'End' available only with 'Fn' key.
- Built-in bluetooth would be nice, but it's not a big deal.
- Only 250GB of storage, although it's still much better than any netbook.

Cons:
- TONS of factory-installed bloatware. If you create system restore DVD and use it, all the bloatware will be restored as well.
- 15GB of storage used by some hidden partition - not available to user. Fortunately when upgrading to Win7 I was able to get rid of that.
- Sometimes it's tricky to boot this laptop from DVD. I was unable to boot Knoppix, only partly successful in booting Ubuntu. I also had trouble booting Win7 during installation. My DVD drive is OK (tested). Perhaps it's something with BIOS settings, but I didn't figure it out yet.

Overall: We've made a good purchase.
