Many people also call the place Angkringan Lik Man—Lik Man, or Uncle Man, is the most popular seller in the place. In other angkringans, people eat on a bench in nangkring position (sitting, one foot up). In Angkringan Tugu, besides on the benches, people can also sit on a mat on the ground or lesehan. Lik Man’s actual name was Siswo Raharjo. As for the origin of his nickname, nobody knows. But if Angkringan Lik Man’s existence had to be attributed to one man, he is not Lik Man. It is his father, Mbah Pawiro or Mbah Pairo, who started all.

The story began in the 1950s, when Lik Man’s father, Mbah Pawiro, worked by hawking food about Tugu Station. At the time, Mbah Pawiro, who came from Cawas, Klaten, Central Java, carried his food around with a shoulder pole.

In 1969, Lik Man inherited his father’s venture. At first, he still did the job like his father, hawking from place to place. It was in the 1970s that he decided to settle in one place, on a sidewalk north of the train station.

Malioboro

A. Introduction

In Yogyakarta, the city of memories as people name it, there is a legendary shopping area called Malioboro. The name is adopted from a British colonial who occupied Yogyakarta in 1811-1816 named Marlborough.

Malioboro was deliberately built at the heart of Yogyakarta by the Indies government at early 19th century as the center of economic and administrative activities. Symbolically, the area also aimed to compete with the domination of Sultan Mataram with his luxurious palace.

For that purpose, the Indies government then built: Vredeburg Fort (1765, now serves as a museum and public tourism arena), Colonial Residency Palace (now the President’s residence, Gedung Agung, in 1832), Beringharjo Market, Garuda Hotel (a place for colonial elites to stay overnight and assemble) and Malioboro shopping (economy) area itself. A. Overview

Sekaten is a series of cultural events held yearly by the provincial government of Yogyakarta in the commemoration of Prophet Muhammad’s birth day which falls on 5th Rabi al-Awwal (Hijri calendar) or 5th Maulud (Javanese calendar) consisting rituals and festivities. It was originally held to proselytize Islam in the region on the initiative of Sultan Hamengku Buwono I. In modern times, though, it tends to be more like festivities than religious event.

The etymology of the word sekaten varies in at least two versions. One—sekaten originated from the word syahadataini, referring to the two sentences of confirmation of Muslim confession of faith. This is in accordance with the original mission embodied in the event intended by Sultan HB I: proselytization of Islam. Two—sekaten derived from sekati, the name of the royal gamelan instruments usually played in the birthday commemoration of Prophet Muhammad, Kanjeng Kyai Sukati. Another opinion states that it is formed of two words suka (fun) and ati (feeling) as people celebrate the Prophet’s birth in gratefulness and merriment.

Sekaten Night Fair is held for the entire month. Indeed, these days people know sekaten more for the bazaar and amusements rather than the core event—rituals performed in the Grand Mosque of Kauman. The fair itself is held in the North Square of the Royal Palace, before the mosque.

The feast starts out a month before the Prophet’s date of birth, i.e. in Rajab month, and ends the day before the Garebeg Maulud, which is the main as well as closing event of sekaten. The events are open for public—government officials, common people, and tourists will crowd the venue everyday during the month. After hundreds of years, sekaten remains one of the most waited events by the people of Yogyakarta and beyond.

B. Features

For a whole month, Sekaten Night Fair would enliven the city. Like similar feast in other places, in sekaten you can find food stalls, amusement rides, and a wide variety of stands. Regional and municipal governments within the province take part in the event by putting on stands promoting their areas.

Every night, sekaten will be jazzed up with art performances, too, from jathilan, dances, keroncong, to dangdut music. Each of the regencies in the province will also stage a local art performance. Loud music, screams from the Rumah Hantu (Ghost House) ride, sounds of mini trains, people hawking their goods, the event is really full of cheers, a party for common people.

Food lovers should come because some of the foods sold in the event are rare or can only be found there, endog abang and brondong beras, for instance. There is also sate kere (literally, satay of the poor) which is sold Rp 500 a skewer. The satay is made of fat and very cheap, hence the name. You had better enjoy the satay while it is still hot otherwise the fat will harden. The other foods are arum manis, tahu petis, bolang-baling, onde-onde, tempura, kerak telur, and, also, hamburger.

You may want to take a rest and make conversation with the sekar ganten sellers in front of the Grand Mosque after walking around in the North Square. Sekar ganten is a cone pack of betel leaves, lime, tobacco, and white frangipani flower. Some people still believe that chewing sekar ganten in the yard of the mosque could give them longevity. You can also hear stories of sekaten tradition from the sellers.

A. Overview

The people of Yogyakarta and Central Java must have been familiar with the beauty and the fierceness of Mount Merapi. As one of the most active volcanoes in the world, Merapi still has the potential to erupt. Since a long time ago, geologists have proposed various theories on the devastating Merapi eruption. One of the well-known hypotheses comes from a Dutch geologist, Reinout Willem van Bemmelen, which thought that Mount Merapi fiercely erupted in 1006. This eruption is then interpreted by archaeologists as the cause for Ancient Mataram big cities’ collapse and migration from Central Java to East Java (Kartikaningtyas in http://purbakala.jawatengah.go.id).

In the second millennium, Merapi erupted several times with the most notable eruptions took place in 1672, 1786, 1822, 1872, and 1930. The pyroclastic and lava flows of the 1672 eruption killed around 300 people while the 1930 eruption claimed more casualties, i.e. around 1.369 people. The following eruptions in 1954, 1961, 1969, and 1972-1973 caused the death of tens of people each (http://www.balipost.co.id). Another blast took place in 1994, killing tens of people. Kaliadem was the farthest point reached by the lava and pyroclastic flows (by the local people is called wedhus gembel) of the 2006 eruption. Thousands of cubic of sand-stones covered Kaliadem area and turned the Camping Ground into a vast barren land. The lava-covered area was then made into a tourism object named Kaliadem Lava Tour. Either domestic or foreign tourists can visit the place to see the materials that came out from the mountain in 2006 and the safety bunker in which the two volunteers were found dead.

B. Feature

Kaliadem area is a highland south of Mount Merapi. From here, visitors can see the mountain peak from 2 km sight distance. The beauty of the mountain, whose altitude is 2.965 m above the sea level, is even more apparent with the solfatara that never stops venting gases, showing that the mountain activity keeps going on all the time.

Aside from enjoying the breathtaking scenery of Merapi peak, tourists can also come in daytime to see geological evidence of the 2006 eruption, the sand stone plain formed by the volcanic materials and the former safety bunker. The dry area, in which only shrubs and bushes can grow, looks contrasting to the green vegetation in the surrounding hills. Before the eruption, Kaliadem used to be a camping ground with many facilities such as small mosque, public convenience, permanent stalls, watching tower, and Merapi hike basecamp. Today, all of those are covered with volcanic materials, leaving only the upper part of the ruined buildings on the surface.

Merapi’s ferociousness is evident in the bunker. At start, the bunker was believed to be strong enough to protect evacuation volunteers in case the mountain flows out its superheated gas. But according to Christian Awuy, a Merapi trekking guide, the eruption did not only spew out pyroclastic gas, but also volcanic materials that destroyed Geger Boyo (the hill south of Merapi peak) and finally covered Kaliadem. Materials as thick as 3 m high with over 1.000 degrees Celcius heat submerged the bunker. Despite being made of 25 cm thick concrete and with an iron door, the bunker could not save the two voluntary workers from the unbearable heat of the volcanic materials. Christian Awuy said that one of the volunteers found dead in the bathtub while the other was found in front of the iron door.

Tourists can see the interior of the bunker which is 2 m below the ground. It has been cleaned up from sand and painted white. In front of the door, there is a stone inscription that explains in brief the history of the bunker. Entering the bunker, tourists will feel it damp and stuffy in there as if there is some kind of mystical activity going on. However, according to Christian Awuy, it is recommended for visitors not to go alone into the bunker to avoid bad things caused by the mystical aura.

Aside from daytime tour, night tour is just as interesting. At night, tourists can see the glowing lava coming out slowly from the crater. The burning red-hot materials look so beautiful with the dark background of the night. If visiting the place at night, visitors should put on warm clothes because it is usually freezing there.

A. Overview

Like many other cities, Yogyakarta also has a historical monument. Tugu Yogya, or usually just called by “Tugu”, is one of the most famous landmarks in the city. Having a deep philosophy behind its existence, the monument has been there for over three centuries witnessing the history of Yogyakarta.

Tugu is a tower-like monument often considered as the symbol of Yogyakarta. It was built in the times of Sultan Hamengku Buwono I, the city’s founding father. It is one of the points on the straight mythical line connecting the South Sea, the King’s Palace, and Mount Merapi stretching south-north. Back centuries ago, it represented the concept of manunggaling kawula gusti, the unification of the lords and the ordinary folks in fighting against colonialism. The spirit of unification, called golong gilig, is embodied by the monument in the gilig (tubelike-shaped) body and golong (round-shaped) peak. In fact, the monument is originally named Tugu Golong-Gilig. At the time, Tugu functioned also as a guide for the direction which the sultan would face during meditation, i.e. the direction of Mount Merapi. Back then, the monument was 25 meter high.

On 10 June 1867, a big earthquake shook Yogyakarta and damaged the monument severely. And in 1889, Tugu was rebuilt and redesigned by the Dutch colonial government. They made the body cubical with an inscription showing those involved in the renovation on each of its four sides. The peak of the monument was no longer round, it became conical. It also became shorter as after the renovation, it was only 15 meter high. Since then, the monument was called De Witt Paal or The White Pole.

It is believed that the new design of Tugu is the Dutch tactics to break the leaders and people apart after they knew about the meaning of the former golong-gilig architecture.

B. Features

Tugu Yogyakarta is more beautiful at night with the colorful lights making it look more imposing. You can visit the monument at afternoon, too, while enjoying the gudeg or other foods sold nearby.
