Full Circle with Michael Palin Episode 1 Part 1 Episode One: Alaska/Russia Michael begins his trek around the Pacific Rim at Little Diomede Island, Alaska, in hopes of returning there in a year’s time. Arriving at Nome, he visits with a goldpanner on the “Golden Sands of Nome”. Next Michael journeys to Kodiak Island, aiming to catch a flight from the US Coast Guard to the western island of Attu. Unfortunately, the plane never arrives; however, he does catch a glimpse of the Kodiak brown bear. Michael and his crew find an alternative: they catch the last Alaska Airlines flight of the year from Anchorage to Petropavlovsk in Russia. Arriving on the Kamchatka Peninsula, he meets his guide Igor Nosov and his assistants. They board a helicopter and observe the Kronotsky Reserve, which contains some active volcanoes, as well as some reindeer. Moving on to the city of Magadan, he visits an old Gulag camp with a survivor. In Vladivostok, he observes the once-powerful Pacific Fleet and is given an opportunity to sing with the Pacific Fleet Ensemble. Sorry its in Russian! Note: The 6-engined jet at 0:40 is the Antonov 225, which is presently the largest aircraft in the world, period. Its a cargo transporter and its cargo bay is so large it can hold most of the assembled components of a Boeing 747. The Russian space shuttle Buran can be attached to its back for transport as well. The aircraft at 1:23 is the Orlyonok ekranoplan, which as of October 2007 is in the process of being restored for an upcoming Russian aircraft exhibition in Moscow. (Or at least, that’s what I’ve read on the net.) There are thought to be maybe one or two other surviving Orlyonoks besides this one. The aircraft at 7:35 is the Lun ekranoplan, which is based on the KM ‘Caspian Sea Monster’, but smaller. www.tigresalvaje.com While I was at Tigre Salvaje I got to help Dave dig up a turtle nest and place the eggs in the incubator. There they will be safe from poachers, stray dogs, and raccoon. The average turtle nest contains 90-130 eggs, the average turtle nest also has about zero chance of success unless people like Dave can get to them before the poachers. It was awesome to be able to help in something like this. And because the turtle season is a few months long not only did I get to put some eggs in the incubator, I was able to handle some baby sea turtles that had already hatched. It was an amazing day, and it got even better in the next episode when released some turtles into the ocean.
