In the United States, the nine digits that make up your Social Security number (SSN) may be the most important numbers in your life. You are required to apply for your SSN when you start your first job, and it stays with you from then on! We use our SSNs daily, although many times we don't even know it.

Important as it is, we may not know much about the origin of our specific number and how SSNs generally came to be. We certainly do know we don't want other people using our SSN as their own, especially not 40,000 other people, as happened to one woman we'll discuss a little later!

In this article, we'll tell you about about how the Social Security program began and answer some common questions regarding SSNs. We'll also tell you what to do if your card is lost or stolen and how you can deal with and prevent Social Security fraud. But first, we'll tell you what your numbers are for, what they mean and how you get the specific number you'll have for the rest of your life.

Generally, the term social security describes a program that uses public funds to provide a degree of economic security for the public. The specific social security discussed here is the United States government program established in 1935 that provides old age, disability, and survivors insurance, as well as supplemental security income, an income for elderly or disabled people.

n the United States, employers and employees are required to pay Social Security taxes. The money raised from these taxes primarily goes to providing benefits for those who have reached retirement age or are otherwise currently eligible. In this way, today's workers provide funds for the people drawing benefits today, and when today's workers retire, the workers of that time will (at least theoretically) provide the funds. You receive Social Security benefits based on the amount of Social Security taxes you have paid, which, up to a certain maximum amount, is based on your income. People who have had greater incomes tend to get greater Social Security benefits. But Social Security also pays a disproportionate amount to people earning low incomes. They need the money more, and a dollar they pay in Social Security taxes provides them higher benefits than a dollar paid by a high-roller. In this way, Social Security in principle provides for those in need.

The original and essential purpose of SSNs is to keep track of the money you put into the Social Security program so that you can get the benefits you're entitled to. The government needs lifelong, unique identity numbers to keep track of people's payments throughout an entire working life, no matter how often we move or change occupations or even change our names.

Social Security is a far-reaching system, offering many types of benefits. In this article, we'll focus on the retirement- and disability-benefit aspects of the Social Security system. We'll find out how Social Security got started, how it works today and what might happen in the future if we don't make some changes.

Most Americans are covered by some form of Social Security. Exceptions include some government employees and railroad workers, who are covered by other programs, and certain agricultural and domestic workers. But chances are, if you are a U.S. citizen and you work in the United States, you receive a statement in the mail every year that looks something like this:

Some home security systems are complex and should be installed by a professional. However, there are many good home security systems sold in kit forms that can be installed by any do-it-yourselfer. Most simple systems use a bell, loud buzzer, or other sound source to note intrusion.

Installation involves mounting the sound source or sounder in a location where it can be easily heard. Then attach a circuit of switches to the sounder and connect a battery to the system. Since the sounder operates from the battery, it remains an effective alarm system even in the event of a power failure. Alternately, battery-operated remote wireless sensors and controls can be installed. However, make sure that batteries are replaced regularly.

In electrical terminology, this alarm system is called a closed-circuit system. When the doors and windows are shut, the attached switches are closed. Because all the switches are in a wiring loop, opening any one of them breaks the loop and triggers the sounder circuit. Simply closing the door or window, moreover, does not restore the switch loop circuit continuity and does not stop the sound until either the battery becomes exhausted or someone switches off the circuit from battery to sounder.

There is an electronic switch built into the sounder. This switch is turned on by breaking the magnetic-switch loop. A key-operated switch in the sounder circuit allows you to turn the alarm system completely off when it is not needed. Also, once the alarm goes on, operating the key switch is the only way to silence the sounder. Only someone who has a key to the switch can reset the system.

The switch device consists of two parts that look much alike: one small plastic box that contains a strong magnet, and another that contains the actual switch. When magnet and switch are not near each other, the switch contacts are separated and the switch is open. On the other hand, when the magnet and switch are near each other, the switch contacts move together and the switch closes. The magnet part of the device is screwed to a door or window, and the switch part is screwed to the door or window frame. Thus, opening a door or window separates magnet from switch, causing the switch to open and trigger the alarm.

Patrol cars benefit from compact, lightweight lights. LED (light emitting diode) technology provides cost savings over halogen, since the bulbs don't need to be replaced. The lights are small, quiet and supply more light-power than older halogen rotating beacons and strobe solutions. Clear lightheads mean the lights can be less conspicuous, too. One of the simplest and most economical locations for patrol car emergency lights is on the rear deck straddling the third brake light. The location is weatherproof and highly visible when the emergency lights are illuminated.

Instructions

Remove the rear seat and pry the brake light off the rear deck with a flat-head screwdriver. Disconnect the brake light wire by pulling it off with a set of pliers. Remove the fasteners that secure the deck and remove it.

Position the patrol car emergency light bracket behind the brake light 1/8-inch from the indentation left by the third brake light.

3.Run a red positive wire from the fuse block to the rear deck and fuse it with an appropriate fuse -- many lights use 5 Amps. Run a black, negative wire to the rear deck. Add a switch halfway along adjacent to the driving position.

Drill mounting holes into the deck with a 9/32-inch bit. Drill a hole for the wires with a 1/2-inch bit and secure the bracket to the deck with the included hardware. Then re-install the deck and the third brake light, reconnecting it. Feed the emergency lights wires through to the switched power source. Clip the emergency light to the bracket and re-install the patrol car rear seat.

How to Design an LED/IR Lamp Flasher Circuit

(Reference 1) You can easily put an LED flasher together with a 555 integrated circuit (IC) timer and a few outboard parts. You can choose any color LED, including the infrared (IR) varieties. The 555 is a versatile timing pulse generator, producing variable-width pulses. On its own, it provides up to 600 milliwatts of drive power---perfect for small-to-medium LED flasher projects. The 555's low cost and simple connections means you can build this project inexpensively in under an hour.

Examine the 555 timer's data sheet, especially the application notes for astable operation. A timing network of 2 resistors and a capacitor determine the 555's frequency and duty cycle. The duty cycle is the percentage of time the timer spends in the "on" state at each cycle. This isn't usually a critical value for a flasher project, though you'll probably avoid very small or large percentages.

Determine a flash speed for your project. Most LED flashers work at about 1 cycle per second, but the 555 can run anywhere from minutes per cycle to several thousands of cycles per second. Select a capacitor 10 microfarads, for example. Calculate resistances for the two resistors, Ra and Rb using the following formula:
F = 1.44 / (C x (Ra + 2Rb))
Where F is frequency in hertz, C is the capacitor's value in farads, and Ra and Rb are the ohm values for two resistors. If you want a frequency of 1 Hz, and using 10 microfarads for C, gives you a total of 144,000 for Ra + 2Rb. You can satisfy this by setting Ra = 100K ohms and Rb = 22K ohms.

3.Insert the 555 timer into the prototype breadboard. Work the chip in slowly and make sure the pins go straight into the holes. With the battery disconnected from the battery clip, wire the 9-volt battery clip into the breadboard so that the positive (red) lead goes to pin 8 of the 555 IC and the negative (black) lead goes to pin 1.

Insert the capacitor into the breadboard. If it's an electrolytic capacitor, insert the negative lead so it connects to pin 1 of the IC. The positive lead goes to pin 6. Insert a jumper wire to connect pins 4 and 8 together. Insert another jumper wire to connect pins 2 and 6. Insert the 100K ohm resistor Ra so that one lead connects to pin 8 and the other lead goes to pin 7. Insert the 22K ohm resistor Rb so that one lead connects to pin 7 of the 555 and the other lead connects to pin 6. Insert the LED into the breadboard so that its anode connects to pin 3 of the 555 and the cathode connects to one lead of a 150 ohm resistor. Connect the other resistor lead to pin 1 of the 555.

Double-check your connections, then connect the 9-volt battery to the clip. The LED should start flashing immediately.

Tips & Warnings

Experiment with different values of Ra, Rb, and the capacitor to alter the flasher's speed and duty cycle.
If you want to drive a string of LEDs, or use high-brightness LEDs, you may need to add a transistor to the 555's output at pin 3. The transistor's higher current rating will handle the increased load.

Remove the rope lights from the Christmas tree or wherever they are hanging. If they are hanging on a wall by brackets, use a screwdriver to unfasten the brackets. If they are held up by wire, use a wire stripper to cut the wire. Remove the broken wire piece first. Lay everything on a table or workbench after removing it.

Examine the insulating material from the broken edge of the rope lights. Check the wire beneath it as well. Secure the edges of the wire together using a soldering iron to reconnect it. Let it cool for several minutes afterward.

Affix insulating material or insulation tubes over the tops of the exposed wires in the rope lights. If using insulation tubes from a radio car hobby shop, add these items prior to the soldering. Melt the wires to the material using a crimping iron, if using insulating material.

Remove the bulbs from the rope lights. Plug the lights back in to check whether they work.

How to Wire an LED Rocker Switch

LED Rocker switches use a built-in LED to provide a clear indication that the switch is turned on, and are usually used for switching 12 volts DC. Single pole, single throw, or SPST, switches normally have two connections, one for the power going to the switch, and the other for the power leaving the switch to power the load when the switch is turned on. LED Rocker switches also have a third connection, which is needed to provide a ground connection for the LED.

Instructions

Cut two lengths of red wire to use for the power connections on the switch, and one piece of black wire to provide the ground connection for the switch. Strip approximately 1/4 inch of insulation from the ends of each of the wires, using the utility knife or wire strippers.

Take each wire in turn, and twist the wire strands at the end of the wire together to make a solid connection. Slide a crimp terminal onto the end of each piece of wire, and then crimp in place using a crimping tool. The type of crimp terminal should match the type of connectors on the switch, so they fit together properly and provide a good connection.

3.Slide the crimp terminal on the end of one of the red wires over the lug on the switch labelled "Acc". Connect the other end of this wire to the power input of the device being switched.

Slide the crimp terminal at the end of the other red wire on to the switch lug labelled "Power." The other end of this wire should be connected to the positive connection of the twelve volt power source, for example a twelve volt battery.

Take the black wire, and slide the terminal over the lug on the switch labelled "Ground." The other end of this wire should be connected to the negative connection of the twelve volt power source, to provide the ground connection for the LED.

Connect the ground connection of the device being switched to the negative connection of the power source. You can now test the circuit. When the switch is turned on, the LED in the switch should light and the connected device will be powered.

Why Do My LED Spotlights Glow When the Light Is Switched Off?

LED spotlights are designed to provide illumination on a specific area using LEDs and mirrors to focus the light. LED stands for light-emitting diode, a type of illumination created by diodes that feature specific elements that lead to the release of electrical energy as different types of light. LEDs are efficient and long-lasting compared to other lighting options, but they also have problems that can develop through the course of their use

Symptoms
It is common for LEDs to glow after they have been turned off. They might flicker slightly for several minutes, or they may produce a low light, only a fraction of their normal brightness, that does not go away. This may be especially noticeable with a concentrated source of light like a spotlight. If you unplug the LED light entirely, the glow should soon vanish.

Residual Voltage
This glow from the LED lights is caused by residual voltage in the electrical line that powers your spotlight. LED bulbs are made out of a collection of diodes. Just one of these diodes is so efficient that the residual current that still travels your power cord is enough to cause it to light up slightly. While this does not indicate a serious problem, it can wear down your LED bulb and might be annoying for your lighting designs. You have a couple of options to rectify the problem.

Diode Blocking
If you want to spend a little money to fight diodes with diodes, you can install a zener diode on the same electrical line that the LED light uses. This diode is designed to block residual voltage for delicate electrical components, so it should be able to stop any incoming current from lighting your bulb. Zener diodes come with different values of blocking, so choose a higher value -- enough to block the voltage flowing through your line.

Cluster Bulbs
Your LED spotlight is probably already a cluster bulb, made out of several diodes. These bulbs have an advantage because they require a higher initial voltage to start. You might be able to fix the problem by switching to an even larger cluster. This requires buying a new LED spotlight, which can be expensive, but can also solve your problem.

In the rush for U.S. energy independence, the Commercial Building Tax Deduction came as a boon to building owners incorporating energy-efficient lighting systems such as light-emitting diode technology. The deduction expired in December 2013, but tax reforms may yet revive the deduction, with the Indoor Environment & Energy Efficiency Association advocating a $3 per square foot deduction as a greater incentive to stay green.

History of the LED Deduction
Hailing back to 2005, when the Energy-Efficient Commercial Building Deduction was born, tax deductions to offset the cost of installing energy-efficient projects such as LED lighting systems have been helping small-business and commercial building owners curb expenses. However, Section 179D tax deductions, as they are called, expired on December 31, 2013, and Congress did not extend the tax incentives beyond the deadline. For green-minded building owners who were counting on the deduction, all hope is not lost. As of mid-2014, legislation was still pending in Congress, that would extend the 179 deduction another two years through December 31, 2015.

Eligibility
To be able to claim the LED deduction, the business filing for the credit had to meet a number of criteria based on lighting power density reduction, the time frame for completion of the project and owner status. To snag this deduction, you had to be the building owner. If the building was publicly owned, the deduction could be allocated to a designated designer such as an architect or contractor.

Deduction Allowances
The LED deduction specified a partial tax deduction and a maximum tax deduction, based on the reduction of lighting power density. That means that for energy reduction rates of 25 to 40 percent -- or 50 percent for a warehouse -- you would have been able to claim a deduction of $0.30 to $0.60 per square foot. The maximum deduction would have been $1.80 per square foot for 50 percent total energy reduction, capped at the cost of the energy-efficient commercial building property placed in service during the taxable year.

Claiming the Deduction
You were able to claim the 179D tax deduction for commercial LED usage by filling out the "Other Deductions" portion of your tax return. The deduction ending in 2013 also allowed tax return amendments dating back three consecutive years.

Wiring Instructions for a 12V DC LED Backup Light

LEDs, or light-emitting diodes, are prized for efficiency and longevity as compared with traditional incandescent lights. Installing LEDs on your vehicle reduces the number of times you are likely to need to change your bulbs. All LEDs are DC, or direct current, lights. Each LED is 3.5 volts, so a 12-volt LED is comprised of four LED bulbs.

Instructions

Determine the polarity of the LED bulb. The back of the LED, where the leads are kept, may be marked with a plus and minus, indicating the polarity. If they are not, usually one edge of the LED bulb is flattened, and this indicates the negative lead.

Solder the LED leads together in series. Do this by soldering the positive lead of the first bulb to the negative lead of the second bulb, and keep repeating that pattern until all the positives have been linked to all the negatives, except for the first and last lead, which should not be connected so as not to form a loop.

3.Solder the unattached positive lead to the positive backup light wire.

Solder the unattached negative lead to the negative backup light wire.

Tips & Warnings
The LEDs will not function if the polarity is reversed. In other words, if you mistakenly solder the positive lead to the negative backup light, or the negative lead to the positive backup light, the LEDs will not illuminate.
