Is Airfare Any Cheaper for Babies?

We all want to save money on airfare, but when it comes to babies and airfare I recommend comfort and safety over cheap airfare every time. Would you travel in your car with your infant baby loose? If you wouldn't travel in a car with your infant baby loose, you probably should exercise the same caution when it comes to flying!

If you're flying with your baby, I'm sure it's tempting to save a few bucks on your airfare by sharing a seat. Airlines don't require a ticket for babies and toddlers (children under the age of two) who sit on an adult's lap so your baby is technically able to fly for free. The problem is that this isn’t really a very safe way to go and we at airfare-now advise against it.

There are several very good reasons for coughing up the cash and buying your baby his or her own airplane ticket. Here are 4 very good reasons:

Cheap Airfare or Security?
Your baby will be secured in an airline adapted car seat and secured by the airplane's seatbelt. In the aircraft experiences turbulance, this could prevent major injuries.

Cheap Airfare or Freedom?
You will be freed from holding the baby for the entire flight. While this doesn't seem like a big issue on a short flight, Pittsburgh to Charlotte for example, it will be appreciated on longer flights without question. Consider a trans-Atlantic flight with a squirmy toddler or a fussy baby on your lap - not good.

Cheap Airfare or Comfort?
Your baby will be more comfortable and much less fussy in an assigned airline seat, and it will be easy to give your baby a bottle when the aircraft is inducing ear pressure - takeoff and landing in particular.

Cheap Airfare or Indigestion?
Your meal on the aircraft will be much easier. It's difficult and sometimes impossible to eat a meal while a little one is on your lap.

So in summary, please buy an airplane ticket when considering baby travel!

Your tip saved me about $300 so I wanted to say thanks and to ask a couple questions. If I get hired and am asked to begin work immediately, is there any value to my unused return airfare? Also, do you have any tips on a reliable (and cheap) moving company?

A. Thanks for your questions!

You won't get a refund, however your unused airfare reservations are valid on most airlines for 12 months from the original purchase date. Some airlines will even let you apply the value of your unused airfare to a different itinerary (12 month rule applies here too), but either way, don't throw away the ticket because there is some lingering value for your airfare purchase.

As far as the moving goes, a real good alternative to full service moving companies is a company called U-Pack Moving - especially if you have someone at home to do the packing. They base your moving cost on space rather than weight which means you usually pay a considerable amount less.I like them because you still get the experience and the convenience of a full-service mover.

One of our top travel tips at airfare-now.com is to find out when peak travel dates are and then avoid them like the plague!

Peak travel dates have two major problems that can be associated with them: 1) airfare, hotel rooms, and car rentals tend to be more expensive on those dates, and 2) everyone and their brother will be traveling on those dates (hence the name "peak travel dates").

Whenever possible, you should purchase your airfare for a few days before peak travel periods and plan to come back a few days after. By doing this, you can almost always guarantee reductions in airfare prices and all of the other components of your travel budget.

What are the peak travel dates that I should avoid, you ask? It depends on your destination. For Florida airfare (and for most ski resorts too), it's all dates from December-March. For Europe however, it's summer. Peak holiday travel dates are the Wednesday before and the Sunday after Thanksgiving, along with December 23, December 26, December 27, January 2, and January 3.

How to Find Cheap Flights to Los Angeles

There are some general rules that apply to almost all flights, but there are some specific rules when it comes to flying to Los Angeles - rules that will make finding cheap flights to Los Angeles a lot more possible than you thought.

1) First and foremost, the further out you can plan your Los Angeles trip, particularly your air travel to LAX, the cheaper the flight will be. Try to book your flight to LAX at least 21 - 30 days out.

2) Very important - stay over a Saturday night!! If your trip to Los Angeles is for 5 days, plan your flight to arrive Wednesday morning to early afternoon, then return on Sunday to get a better fare. Extra tip... try mid-week flights for arrival and departure for the cheapest flights.

3) Don't ever buy airline tickets for Friday evening or Monday morning. These are obviously the busiest times for the airlines and the airfare will reflect that. You won't ever find cheap flights to LAX on a Friday night.

4) Avoid holiday travel to Los Angeles if you can. If you must travel to LAX for a holiday, book your flight for the actual holiday (fly in ON Christmas Day rather than Christmas Eve, for example).

5) With the exception of Thanksgiving, airfare to LAX is cheapest between November 1st and December 15th.

6) Pretty obvious, but fly from a major city - preferably a major international hub. If you live an hour outside Chicago for example, choose Chicago Ohare anyway. Take the bus or some other form of public transportation if necessary but fly from the international hubs.

7) Flights to LAX on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday will usually offer the lowest prices. The heaviest travel days TO LAX are Monday, Friday and Sunday, so the prices can be higher.

8) Solid gold tip!! If you are willing to be bumped from an overbooked flight, you could be given a very large discount for a future trip or possibly een a free roundtrp. If you are not in a hurry and the airline announces your flight is overbooked, ask the gate counter representative what they are offering for a volunteer "bump".

9) Use your status as a senior citizen or a college student to get discounts - sometimes as much as 25% off! If you are at least 55 years of age or you can show a student ID, this is definitely an avenue you need to explore.

10) If you call the airlines directly, ask them for their most inexpensive flight. Believe it or not, It is not always coach. Your airline may be having a special on business travel that you qualify for. Always ask!

We're getting pretty good at finding discount airfare - let’s take a look at some ways to find the various travel package opportunities.

The first website to take a look at for searching last minute travel packages is lastminute.com. This website is organized by destination, activity, even resource, and it's a super site for finding discount airfare and last minute travel packages. The best feature of lastminute.com is called "last second deals."

LastMinuteTravel.com

Another excellent website when searching for discount airfare and last minute travel is lastminutetravel.com. Like lastminute.com, this website allows you to purchase individual trip components (discount airfare, cruises, rental cars, etc.) but it excels at offering complete packages. While it doesn't have a "last second deals" feature, it does have some terrific savings opportunities.

Be careful on this website with a slightly misleading tab called "last minute deals in advance.” These deals are not really last minute deals at all but simply featured deals that you can book at any time. There don’t seem to be any extra discounts for these "last minute deals in advance.”

Conclusion

If you know where to look, you will find discount airfare deals easily. If you expand your search however, you might find some super travel packages. The recent rise in the popularity of last minute travel has spawned many a discount travel website.

Are you "Googling" for the best site to get airfare deals?

Here's an interesting tidbit... Google has just purchased a flight information company called ITA and plans to integrate their services into a new set of Google travel tools. In other words, instead of Googling for "airfare deals" you may be shopping on Google for airfare deals. Make sense?

ITA is known for providing some of the best airfare comparisons (like my favorite called flight matrix), and its services are used all of the time by travel agencies and airlines. ITA's software already powers Farecast which is the engine for Bing Travel. It's also used by major travel sites like CheapTickets.com and Orbitz.

Will Google kill off ITA's ties to Bing and other airfare booking services? We think it would be a major loss for the airfare and travel industry if Google decided to do that. The good news is that right now, it looks as if they intend to continue licensing the airfare technology out. Time will tell...

New Routes Announced by Sun Country Airlines

Sun Country Airlines has announced plans for new non-stop domestic airfare to Las Vegas, Ft. Myers and Orlando as well as new non-stop international airfare to Cancun, Mexico and Montego Bay, Jamaica. The new routes are slated to begin on December 22 of this year which is great news indeed for holiday travelers.

“Mexico, the Caribbean, Florida, and Las Vegas will now be available to the greater Lansing area with non-stop flights featuring low fares and award-winning service including First Class” said Stan Gadek, Sun Country's president and CEO.

To launch Sun Country’s new airfare service, the airline announced some very good introductory airfares as low as $89 one way to their new destinations:

Did you know that most airport retailers make a killing on impulse purchases like Tylenol, magazines, breath mints, toiletries, tissues, and just about all of those little drug store item that air travelers purchase inside the airport terminal. Yep..., the markup on these types of products can be outrageous - even double or triple what you’d pay outside of the airport. Airport retailers know that they have trapped and bored customers en masse so they charge a premium price for even the most basic of items.

A Summer Airfare Surcharge?

Airlines have very quietly increased what you'll be paying for flights this summer by slapping a surcharge for flying on what they deem a peak travel day. According to FareCompare.com, this surcharge is ranging from $10 to $30 for each one-way domestic airfare and is included in the total cost of your ticket.

In other words, a family of four will be paying up to $240 more for round trip airfare if they choose to travel during the summer vacation season. "The airlines are treating the entire summer season like a holiday," said FareCompare.com CEO Rick Seaney.

According to the study, five major airlines — Continental, American, United, Delta, and US Airways— have added surcharges to flights on 73 of the 74 days between June 10th and Aug. 22nd. The only day without a measured surcharge seems to be July 4th which is usually one of the summer's least-busy air travel days.
Airfare-now.com is advising extra caution when booking summer airfare.

Experts Say... Buy Your Airfare on a Tuesday

Best Airfare Deals on Tuesday Afternoon

In our last blog post, we recommended Saturday departures for the best summer airfare prices. Today, we'll expand on that recommendation by telling you when you should make the purchase.

Steve Hafner of travel website Kayak.com is one of my favorite airfare experts. According to Steve's data crunching, the best time for a person to buy an airline ticket is on a Tuesday afternoon at around 3:00 pm.

Why? Hafner noticed that most airlines tend to post their airfare deals on Monday evenings. The competition starts attempting to match the bargains on the following Tuesday morning. By waiting until Tuesday afternoon, all the best airfare dealss are in the system and waiting to be purchased.

Southwest Airlines Birthday Airfare Sale - Prices as Low as $39

Announcing Southwest Airfare Sale

Southwest Airlines has just announced a birthday sale with airfare as low as $39 each way.

The Texas Based airline is celebrating 39 years of operation and is offering discount fares based on the miles flown on each route.

Fares for flights up to 450 miles from your departure airport are starting at $39.00. Flights from 451 to 1000 miles are $79 and flights above 1,001 air miles are $119. All prices are one way and exclude taxes and fees. In order to qualify for these special rates, flights must take place between September 8th and November 17th 2010.

There are a number of other restrictions. For example, travel doesn't apply to flights on Fridays or Saturdays and not all cities are covered.

Important: Airfare must be purchased by 11:59 Pacific Time this Thursday (June 24 2010) in order to take part in the sale.

Spirit Airlines Pilot Strike Resolved

The Spirit Airlines strike is finally over.

The highly publicized pilot strike continued through Thursday with all flights canceled, however the airline struck a deal and was back in the air today. While millions of dollars were undoubtedly lost, the airline is now having to spend additional money to restore customer goodwill.

They are giving customers future flight credits or refunds for their inconveniences and they are enticing new airfare purchases by offering a $50 off deal. Word on the street is, however that the $50 Spirit Airlines coupon expires at midnight tonight.

Spirit Airlines’s largest hub is in Florida. They are a discount or "low-fare" carrier and their main competition comes from AirTran and Jet Blue.

For Milwaukee-area travelers, their airfare at General Mitchell International Airport fell more than 25% in the 4th quarter of 2009 when compared with the same period of 2008. Airfare is falling in Milwaukee. The average cost of airfare at Mitchell dropped to $247 from last year's $331 and it's now ranked the second lowest average airfare in the nation (Atlantic City International Airport in New Jersey has the lowest average airfare at $190).
