But is it worth it? O2 emerged as the latest mobile phone network to announce they will be shipping Apple’s iPhone 4. The troublesome handset will be available on a pay-as-you-go package, though the price is considerably more expensive than rivals Orange and Vodafone.

Customers purchasing the iPhone 4 from O2 will be expected to pay £595 for a 32GB and £495 for the 16GB which is £25 more than competitors. However, the package does include 500 MB of data allowance and 300 free text messages for top-ups between £10-£14 every 30 days, 500 free texts for tops of up to £29 or unlimited texts for top-ups exceeding £30.

With the add-ons it may not seem like too bad a deal after all, though for an additional £5, purchasing the iPhone on a contract with O2 rivals you get an additional 600 minutes of free calls. All we’re saying is shop around.

Earlier this week, American iPod giants Apple announced plans to rebrand Apple TV as iTV. The proposed naming of the station however has seriously upset Executives at ITV, Britain’s longstanding and oldest commercial television network. The Mirror.co.uk reported ITV bosses are “furious” and have already called their legal representatives to “stop the move.” Even though Apple haven’t officially named their proposed TV channel yet, it would appear they will are going to need a rethink before they do or suffer the consequences.

The idea behind Apples intention is simply to rename the 2007 release of Apple TV which allows easy access to hire and purchase HDTV movies and music videos to play directly though your television set. But their intention to add the “i” at the front to keep it in sync with other Apple products, iPod, iPhone and the 2010 gadget iPad, is making grown men spit their dummies out.

This is not the first time Apple have sparked controversy over the naming of their products. In 2007 the American company were sued by Cisco when they announced the naming of the iPhone. The dispute was settled amicably a month later with both firms agreeing to retain their individual rights. The arrangement between the parties remained confidential.

And when Apple announced the launch of the brand name, iPad, it emerged the Japanese IT specialists had owned a similar touch-screen product with the same brand name since 2002. That didn’t deter the Americans however and it was declared by the U.S Patent and Trademark Office that Apple had obtained the “entire interest” in the iPad trademark.
The Americans clearly are not abashed to throw their weight or their money about to obtain what they want, but will tackling an established British TV station be taking their branding project one step too far? It seems a big fuss over a little name. Tch. Corporate Executives!

Sony Walkman NWZ-W252 2 GB MP3 Player

The innovative compact Sony NWZ-W252 is the perfect workout companion, though in terms of style does not rate against other portable audio players in its class. Though the features of this tidy little player are basic, they are necessary and convenient placed. For a fitness-friendly gadget, you could do a lot worse.

Design

Some would say Sony’s clunky, Bluetooth-esque earpiece that straps round the back of your head is a design fault, and ordinarily they would be right, but the wire-free NWZ-W252 does have its practical uses for active pursuits. Its water-resistant casing protects the device from malfunction if you get caught in a downpour whilst out jogging and the convenient head-strap means it won’t fall out of your pocket whilst doing sit-ups. Not only that, the in-ear clips ensure a snug fit so the plugs don’t keep falling out like conventional earplugs have a tendency to do. Another plus is the eartips come in three sizes.

The W252 may be light on features, but it does everything required of it whilst exercising, namely play music both continuously or randomly, skip tracks at will and easily alter volume levels with the minimum of fuss. The setup process couldn’t be easier. There is no requirement for a software CD, just simply plug in the standard USB cable to run the program then follow the on-screen instructions. To transfer audio files either download from Windows Media Player, iTunes or use Sony’s Content Transfer to drag and drop.

Playback

Audio playback is more than adequate with clear sounding highs and a better than average bass response. The earbuds may not be the best for blocking out background noise, which if you’re jogging roadside is not a bad thing, and the W252 has plenty of volume to drown out the mediocre drone of R&B most gyms play through the TV.

Unlike Apple’s iPod Shuffle, the Sony W252 does not have an LCD screen, though it does have a neat function that allows you to search through your music library to find the right track. Sony have named the feature, Zappin, which plays four or 10 seconds of the chorus depending on user preference.  The process is a little more longwinded than the traditional skip method of browsing, but does have its uses for new albums you are not so familiar with. Another positive feature Apple can’t offer is the quick-charge feature which will give you 90 minutes of playback after just a 3-minute power boost.
