Looking for things to do in Kraków? Cast your gaze outside the city

Kraków makes a great base for exploring Małopolska. Some of these activities can be enjoyed as day trips from the city, while others might see you packing your bag for a road trip and staying in other towns and cities in the region.

Enjoy the rides at Energylandia

With over 100 rides across six themed zones, the largest amusement park in Poland and one of the biggest in Europe offers fun for the whole family, roughly one hour from Kraków. Thrill seekers can get an adrenaline rush at the Extreme Zone, on rides like the Hyperion rollercoaster. It has a 90-degree drop and a top speed of around 142 km/h.
Dragon Town is perfect for fans of medieval fantasy, with castle ruins and a magical Dragon Adventure train ride. Don’t leave without taking a ride on Zadra, the world’s tallest hybrid rollercoaster.

Younger kids can enjoy the bumper cars and ​​the Śmiejżelki Energuś rollercoaster in the storybook-esque Fairytale Land Zone. Energylandia also has plenty of spots where you can cool off on hot days.

The Water Zone will make you feel like you’re on a tropical island with space to relax, play games or enjoy water slides (lifeguards will keep an eye on you and your kids). For a more high-octane water experience, try the Speed rollercoaster in the Extreme zone (the fastest, highest water coaster in the world).

The Family Zone has a number of water rides and a Splash Battle interactive experience. Aqualantis’ Abyssus rollercoaster takes you over the water at high speeds, or you can take a calmer trip by boat on the water with the Grotto Expedition. The food here is varied, with plenty of options for sit-down meals or on-the-go snacks.

VeloMałopolska: cycle through the countryside

Cycling is a great way to take in Małopolska’s beautiful countryside. There are eight planned VeloMałopolska routes that will take you to every part of the region. Currently, the VeloDunajec takes you from the north of Małopolska to the south (or vice versa) and is 256 kilometres long in total.

The Vistula Cycling route is 230 kilometers long and connects the region from east to west. These routes connect Kraków to other lovely Małopolska towns and cities. Asphalt paths mean you can explore the region at your leisure during all weather conditions and they’re wide enough to accommodate multi-track bicycles.

The trails are separated from the main roads, so you won’t have any cars or other vehicles to contend with. If you head out to the region’s national parks, you’ll find cycling routes that take you around the Tatra Mountains and the Pieniny foothills. There are also mountain biking routes for those who want to add some extra elevation. Looking to do some wine-tasting during your stay? Water Activities in Małopolska

Whether you take a peaceful pontoon or a rapid river raft, you can have plenty of fun on the water in Małopolska during the warmer months.

Dunajec Gorge: River rafting in the Pieniny National Park

At Pieniny National Park, you can take part in a historical tradition at the Dunajec River Gorge. River rafts along the river were once used as a transit system for people and goods.

Today, you can ride the rafts from the nearby villages, steered by locals known as “flisaks”, who are expertly trained to handle the currents. They wear traditional clothes and take you on a calm journey through the gorge. Longer tours start in Sromowce Wyżne and shorter tours start at Sromowce Niżne.

You can also take a rapid rafting tour on inflatable pontoons. Tours are usually offered from April 1st to the end of October. The rapid rafting should be booked in advance, but the traditional rafts shouldn’t require bookings.

Take a Pontoon down the Poprad River

The Poprad River winds past forests and small towns in the Poprad Valley. You can take it all in at a leisurely pace on pontoons or kayaks. If you want to take a kayak, you’ll usually need to take a quick refresher course beforehand. The main route will take you from the charming town of Muszyna to the spa village of Żegiestów.

Canoeing and kayaking across Małopolska

Poland’s longest river, the Vistula, winds its way through Małopolska. The calm waters are suitable for beginners, and you can hire a kayak or a canoe to explore on your own or book a tour. Kajaki na Wiśle offers tours between Brzeźnica and nearby towns.

Mountain hikes at Malopolska’s 6 national parks

With two biosphere reserves, Małopolska has six national parks, more than any other Polish region.

Many parks are home to breathtaking mountain ranges with hiking trails that take you right to the peak. Below you’ll find some of the best trails and attractions across Małopolska’s parks.

Tatra National Park

Tatra National Park is one of Poland’s largest parks. It’s home to the Tatra Mountains, which share the border between Poland and Slovakia. They include Rysy, the highest mountain in Poland, which offers sweeping views of the alpine forests that are well worth the climb to the peak.

The Palenica Bialczynska to Rysy Trail is an excellent option that takes you past the Morskie Oko Lake and up to the peak in around three hours. The Tatra Mountains are also one of the best winter destinations in Małopolska for snow sports enthusiasts.

It’s home to Kasprowy Wierch, the highest ski resort in Poland, best suited to more advanced skiers or snowboarders. If you’re visiting in summer, consider taking the cable car to the top, for the views and hiking trails.

There are also several beautiful lakes. Morskie Oko is the most well-known but the Dolina Pięciu Stawów Polskich lakes are just as beautiful and often less crowded. You can get a great view of them by taking the Kasprowy Cable Car.

Babia Góra National Park

One of Poland’s smallest national parks, Babia Góra is a stunning massif that offers incredible views of the Tatras to the south. There are several hiking trails throughout the park, and you can follow the Red, Yellow or Green trails up to the peak, Diablik.

Time your arrival for sunset or sunrise and you’ll be rewarded with a picture-perfect moment. In winter some walking tracks may be closed, but you’ll also have the option of exploring the park using the ski trails from Zawoja Village.

Pieniny National Park

Pieniny National Park is home to one of Poland’s most beautiful castles, the Czorsztyn Castle, placed majestically above the edge of Czorsztyn Lake. There are a number of trails of varying lengths and difficulties, but we love the Blue Trail, as it takes you through some of the best parts of the park.

From the Czorsztyn visitor centre to the top of the Three Crowns, through the mountains and down to the Dunajec river gorge. As you make your way along the trails, keep an eye (and your camera!) out for lynxes, butterflies and deer. When you get to the Dunajec River, you can spot otters swimming in the water which runs past stunning limestone cliffs.

Gorce National Park

Hike up the Gorce Mountains for stunning views of the forests and foothills down below. Start in the lovely Koniki Village and take the trail up to Turbacz Peak.

Near the peak, you can stop for a break and a tasty meal at the mountain hut restaurant (we recommend getting a table outside to soak in the views).

Bird enthusiasts will want to keep their eyes peeled for capercaillie and eagle owls as they make their way through the lush spruce forest. Along with rocky mountain slopes, you can also explore flat pastures on foot, by bicycle or by horseback.

Ojców National Park

While Gorce’s draw is its beautiful mountains, Ojców National Park takes you down into deep valleys and dramatic caves. These caves are home to the park’s large bat population, and two are open to the public: the Dark Cave and King’s Lokietek Cave.

You can visit the caves with a tour guide, and you’ll need to purchase tickets beforehand. You’ll also need to make a short hike to reach the Dark Cave. King’s Lokietek Cave is a short walk from the nearby car park.

Rock climbing at Jura Krakowsko-Częstochowska

The limestone cliffs of Jura Krakowsko-Częstochowska make it the largest rock-climbing spot in Poland. Most routes are bolted, and you’ll want to be prepared for slippery surfaces. Roughly 60 metres of rope and 15 quickdraws should be sufficient for most climbs.

Once you get to the top, you’ll be rewarded with views of Poland’s Jurassic Highland. You can find routes that are comfortable for beginners and routes that provide an interesting challenge for more advanced climbers.

If you’re travelling with people who aren’t interested in climbing, there are also several caves and castles in the region to explore. Situated between Kraków, Wieluń and Częstochowa, it makes a great day trip from one of Małopolska’s major cities.

Things to do in winter in Małopolska

Małopolska is gorgeous in the winter months, and you can enjoy plenty of fun winter activities. Cross-country skiing is a particularly popular pastime. It’s perfect for anyone heading to Zakopane, where you can find a number of trails and a biathlon shooting range.

The Górna Równia Krupowa trail runs through the centre of Zakopane and is lit up at night. If you visit Małopolska in December, you’ll be able to enjoy busy Christmas markets and the Christmas Crib competitions in Kraków.

Relax at Małopolska’s saunas and spas

You’ve spent a long day skiing or hiking through the mountains and exploring the best of Małopolska’s natural landscapes. But now, it’s time to kick back and relax, and thermal spas in Małopolska are the perfect place to do it.

Many of the best ones are close to Zakopane which itself is home to the Termy-Zakopianskie. You can relax in the thermal pools packed with calcium, sodium, sulphur, magnesium and more. One of the best nearby options for families is Termy Szaflary.

There’s a toddler pool and a Children’s Cove, that’s supervised by qualified assistants. Alternatively, Chochołowskie Termy is around 40 minutes from Zakopane. With almost 3000 square metres of water across 30 pool troughs, you can soak up the sulphide and brine water in the treatment zone or have fun amidst artificial waves, water jets and slides.

Spas near Nowy Sącz & Nowy Targ

If you’ve been hiking or skiing in the Pieniny National Park, head to Szczawnica, which is famed for its alkali sorrel springs. Further west, Krynica-Zdrój in Nowy Sącz County is Poland’s largest spa town. Nestled in the Beskids mountains, you can bathe in the warm, mineral water, or buy it by the bottle at the “Pearl of the Polish Spas”.

While here, take the scenic walk or a cable car to the Tree-Top Observation Tower at the top of the Słotwiny Arena ski station. It’s similar to the famous Sky Walk, or “path in the clouds” in Krynica Zdrój.

Termy Bukovina and Terma Bania

For that picture-perfect holiday memory, opt for a sauna with a sweeping mountain view. Termy Bukovina has thermal pools that reach up to 38°C. You can kick back in the steam rooms or hot tub or have fun on the water slides. On some evenings, their pool night events turn the thermal pools into an outdoor club. Another option is Terma Bania, in Białka, just 10 minutes from Bukovina by car, which offers both family fun and adult-only areas. They have several saunas, including the glowing Salt Rock Cave.

So there’s really no reason not to hop on a plane and explore this amazing country. But if you need more convincing, read on to discover more about some of its top cities Kraków, Warsaw and Gdansk – and why they should be on your bucket list.

Kraków – city sights steeped in history and culture

If these streets could talk! Kraków’s stories, both factual and the stuff of legends, is full of kings, tragedy, war and great prosperity. The historic capital was once where Polish royalty called home, resulting in a wealth of history, art and culture gems around every corner today. As the second-largest city in Poland, Kraków offers lots to do and see, without losing its charming and cosy vibe. And did you know that the city contains 25% of the entire country’s museums?

Stare Miasto

How to approach Kraków? You’ll want to start in the Old City Centre, or Stare Miasto, which dates back to the seventh century and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This gorgeous area will transport you back in time with its majestic buildings and markets. You won’t be able to avoid noticing Planty Park while there – a green ring two and a half miles long, where the city’s impressive moat existed.

Main Square

The mediaeval Main Square is one of the largest in Europe and is bustling with locals meeting others for a bite to eat, some shopping, or a leisurely stroll. The Main Square has even converted its cellars into restaurants, making for an intimate dining atmosphere. This special underground area also features an interactive route called Following Traces of Kraków’s European Identity. The multimedia exhibition takes visitors back 1,000 to when the city was first built.

Wawel Castle

Don’t miss this imposing castle while you’re in the area; overlooking the Vistula River, this culturally-significant landmark has been a national symbol of Poland’s successful past, as well as the home of many a Polish monarch. Today it features a large art gallery, Crown treasury, armoury and beautiful royal gardens. It’s been awarded a Google Maps Golden Pin award, which is given to those attractions that are rated by Google Maps users as being extra worthy of a visit.

Kazimierz

The Jewish quarter, Kazimierz, is a unique district where visitors are welcome to learn the history of its past and present inhabitants. It hosts the Jewish Cultural Festival every summer and was the shooting location for the film Schindler’s List. You can also visit the Jewish History Museum at the Old Synagogue, or take a day trip to Auschwitz for a truly immersive experience.

Warsaw – the culinary capital of Poland

Polish food is simple yet bold, delicious, generous in portion and low-waste. In meat and fish dishes, most of the animal parts are used, adding extra flavour and goodness.

Diverse and delicious

Warsaw is the food mecca of the country. So if you’re a foodie and want to get personal with the best cuisine that Poland has to offer, you’ll have more choices and dishes than you could ever eat in one holiday. This thriving coastal city is the place to visit for all lovers of design and architecture. The city has so many well-preserved buildings with stories to tell, and newer buildings with award-winning architecture.

Main Town

Where to start? Ease into your environment with a visit to the Main Town. This area is a popular stop for visitors, with views of the beautiful Motława River and picturesque boats sailing by. It’s also home to The Crane: an iconic relic of Gdansk’s port trading history and today part of the National Maritime Museum.

Royal Way

Continue on to the Royal Way, which is most likely the city’s most charming, idyllic stroll. This fairytale-like street comprises tall, narrow tenement houses that have been well-restored post war. The bottom storeys are mainly bustling boutiques selling local wares – a must for any visitor.

Centre of Solidarity

For truly astounding architecture, head to the Europejskie Centrum Solidarności, an exhibition centre focused on Solidarity and the opposition movements that sprung up throughout Central and Eastern Europe in Communist times. This award-winning building impresses both from the outside facade and the inside. You’ll also gain a sobering impression of the many sacrifices that were made standing up to totalitarianism.
Museum of the Second World War

This is another building with striking architecture, especially due to its unusual placement. Most of it is located 14 metres underground, with the visible parts of the museum jutting out of the ground at an imposing angle. Truly thought-provoking on the outside and the inside.

Beaches and seaside resorts

When you’re ready for a breath of fresh sea air to cleanse your mind, there are plenty of beaches and seaside resorts to choose from in the Gdansk area. By far most of the Polish beaches are wide, with plenty of room for everyone, and have clean and pleasant water. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a piece of amber as you stroll along the sand.

Jelitkowo Beach is super close to Gdansk and is ideal for everyone, making it popular with the locals too. It offers sports opportunities like football and volleyball, and has bicycle hire and even some inflatable water slides for fun in the water.

Sopot Beach is another close-by alternative. It’s just to the north of Gdansk and one of the longest beaches in Poland, providing room for locals and visitors alike. Sopot Beach caters to party-goers, students and young couples especially. So if you come for swimming during the day, expect to stay well into the night hours. There are a multitude of themed bars and nightclubs to have fun in.

Gdynia Main Beach is another lovely beach that’s just a bit north of Sopot in Gdansk’s sister city Gdynia. This seaside port town is popular for its charming family-friendly vibes and for its music scene. It hosts two main festivals every summer, the Open’er Festival that pulls in huge music artists from around the world to feature in its concerts, and The Summer Starts in Gdynia. This one is held on the Main Beach and features fun family activities, concerts and lots more, all in celebration of midsummer.

The beach itself has room for everyone and clean water to swim in. You’ll also spot paragliders gliding in from the nearby cliffs. Or enjoy a forest and beach day with an invigorating hike in the scenic forest trails before ending with a refreshing dip.

Stogi Beach is right up your alley if you’re a nudist or even just a daring traveller. Located in the Stogi area of Gdansk, this beach is perfect for anyone wanting to get out of the city for a breather. The locals enjoy it for its easy accessibility and appreciation of keeping the setting natural and laid-back. Beach-goers who want to enjoy the sand and water au natural typically head for the more secluded areas.

In recent years, so-called ‘dark sky’ tourism has seen huge gains in popularity. It’s no wonder, given how many of us live in light-polluted cities, that the desire to see an evening sky spangled with stars and other celestial bodies is inspiring a new wave of travel. Here in the UK, there are a number of convenient locations that are perfect for a bit of amateur stargazing, whether you’re toting along a telescope or just observing with the naked eye. While big cities are off the cards, some of the country’s most beautiful parks and nature preserves also double as astronomical destinations. Let these five spots across Britain inspire your next stargazing mission.

Exmoor

In a remote and beautiful tract of the West Country, Exmoor draws astronomy enthusiasts with its perfectly dark skies. It’s no exaggeration; the region was officially given International Dark-Sky Reserve status several years back. What that means for visitors is that the swirls of the Milky Way should be easily visible on clear nights; a number of cosy cottages and inns also cater to those after a remote getaway.

Powys, Wales

Officially one of the darkest places in Britain, Powys, in Wales – located in the rural middle of the country – is an astronomer’s dream. Many visiting stargazers head straight for Brecon Beacons National Park; within the park, the Usk and Crai Reservoirs and the Llangorse Lakes are often dotted with telescopes at night. Still, you should be able to see galaxies of stars unaided.

Kielder

Right on the English-Scottish border, Kielder Forest has been ranked as the number one darkest place in all of Britain. That designation makes it an essential stop for dark sky tourists. The more advanced amateur astronomers among them will want to bring along their own kit, though the Kielder Observatory caters to interested visitors at all levels. Look out for special events like aurora viewing nights and cosmology workshops.

Sussex Downs

Comfortably accessible for those travelling from London, the Sussex Downs are a convenient place for stargazing in the south. The Black Down is particularly recommended, as it is the highest point in the region and the most separated from any lingering light pollution, while the South Downs Planetarium is another draw.

Isles of Scilly

Off the coast of Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly combines some of the UK’s most beautiful natural surroundings with ideal dark sky conditions. After spending hours taking in the view, stay at the appropriately named Star Castle Hotel in St Marys, whose name comes from the shape of its exterior fortifications.

But then you receive a text that goes something like: “We are sorry to inform you that flight EZY9876 to London Stansted Airport has been cancelled due to an airline strike. Please visit the check-in desk for more information”.

Now what? Is this going to totally ruin my holiday plans? Will I have to buy a new flight? How much is this going to cost me? Will I have to spend all night sleeping on the airport floor?

To understand exactly what you need to do and what kind of compensation you’re eligible for, you must first read the hefty EC 261 EU Passenger Rights Regulations document… Just kidding!! We’ve made it super straightforward to understand. Read on!

Am I eligible for compensation?

When an airline goes on strike, it’s likely to cause heavy delays, disruption and total confusion at the airport as passengers scramble around to work out how they’re going to get to where they want to go. The good news is, if your flight has been delayed or cancelled due to an airline strike and you were travelling to/from the EU, you may be entitled to compensation.

If your flight is cancelled, you should be offered an alternative flight on the same airline to your destination on the same day, or the day after. Or, if this isn’t possible, you’ll be offered a full refund.

You should be eligible for compensation if:

• The airline informed you of the cancellation less than 14 days before your scheduled departure
• Your flight was delayed by 3 hours or more
• You were set to fly out from the EU, or you were on an EU airline arriving in the EU
• The new arrival time of your replacement flight was significantly later than your original
• This disruption took place within the last 3 years

How much compensation am I eligible for?

The EU Passenger Rights Regulation entitles passengers to full reimbursement of their ticket price, or alternative transport. Depending on your delay, the departure and arrival time of a replacement flight and the distance of your journey, you’re entitled to claim between approximately €250 and €600 per person, even if you’ve already been reimbursed for the price of your ticket.

Provided you meet the eligibility conditions above, you’ll be able to claim based on the following flight distances:

• Up to 1,500km (ie. London to Paris) – entitled to approximately €250
• 1,500km – 3,500km (ie. London to Istanbul) – entitled to approximately €400
• 3,500km and above (ie. London to Seoul) – entitled to approximately €600

Know your rights

If you’re stuck at the airport, you have a ‘right to care’, meaning the airline must look after you. In fact, this is the case whether you’re stuck due to a strike, technical issues or bad weather.

After a delay of 2 hours or more, the airline has a duty to provide you with:

• Food and refreshments throughout the delay
• Means of communication – two phone calls, fax messages and emails

If your flight is pushed back for a next day departure, the airline usually arranges hotel accommodation for you, and will provide transport to and from the venue, so you won’t have to spend the night perched atop your suitcase surrounded by other crotchety holidaymakers.

It’s important that you save proof of your expenditure while at the airport – alternative tickets, vouchers and receipts of food and drink expenses – and also get the airline to confirm the cause of disruption in writing. And of course, make full use of the complimentary food and drink while you can!

What about that time my flight was cancelled due to strikes a few years ago?

If your travel was affected by a strike as far back as three years ago, you are now eligible for compensation under EC 261. The same criteria still applies!

So remember…

If you’re stuck at an airport due to an airline strike, you’re eligible for compensation:

• If your flight was delayed by 3 hours or more, cancelled less than 14 days before your departure, and you’re flying within the EU or with an EU airline arriving into the EU
• If the new arrival time of your replacement flight was significantly later than your original
• Between approximately €250 and €600, depending on the distance of your flight

Don’t forget to keep all of your receipts and get information in writing from the airline, and claim your free food and drinks. And if this has happened to you within the past three years, you’re eligible to claim! Good luck.

If you’ve claimed this is the year you’ll finally build up that savings account, sock money away into your ISA or pay down those pesky loans, then a trip to New York City might not be on your radar..

Sure, you can try to do it on the cheap, but a decent hotel room in a good location will cost you and the fun will entice you. Certainly, with so many trendy cocktail bars and tempting restaurants, it’s easy to run up quite a tab.

Spend your days lounging poolside at one of many resorts, or choose to dig your toes in the sand and find your spot on the shore.

Take a dip – but don’t strain yourself – in water that averages 24-27 degrees or take a light stroll along the seashore. Plus, there is an official ban on cruise ships, casinos and high-rise hotels on the island providing you with the ideal stress-free retreat. The gym will be worlds away as far as you’re concerned. A city that caters to your every need – at all hours of the day and night – Vegas is the ultimate playground. You can hit the tables at any hour of the day, explore the club scene, take in a show – the list goes on.

If you’re determined to kick that caffeine habit, a visit to São Paulo may derail your plans. Not only does Brazil produce almost 40 per cent of the world’s coffee, but coffee is an integral part of the social life in many Brazilian cities with São Paulo topping the list.

Where to break it: Ibiza, Spain

Located 50 miles off the coast of Valencia, Ibiza may seem like the ideal locale for some solo relaxation time. But as it’s nicknamed the “party capital of Europe”, you might not have that much tranquil alone time.

Superclub Pacha is a perennial in the top international party spots list. The club is complete with five rooms each with a different school of music playing.

The island’s clubs are also known for their foam parties. There’ll really be no need to pack your paperback or Kindle because chances are there won’t be much down time.
