What I've Learnt From Working with a New Zealand Working Holiday Visa

I landed in Auckland under working holiday VISA on 20th January 2017 at 1am, got picked up by a local kiwi (I made her wait 2 hours due to flight delay omggg) and basically was jobless for 2 weeks. The first thing that I really learnt is that you can't make plans when you're in a working holiday. My initial plan was to work 3 months in advertising (LOL) and then travel 3 months, and go home. But well that didn't work out and I ended up doing what everybody does, agriculture.

Found my first agriculture job as a mandarin orange thinner, where I need to just remove excessive fruits that were growing. My second job was in a vineyard where I clipped nets to prevent animals from eating the growing grapes, and my last job was working in an apple pack house, well packing apples. The traveling part was a different story altogether, that's for the next posts. (Ain't gonna waste my 75gb(s) of photos haha)

1. Don't be picky

If you're picky, you're gonna be jobless for life. No joke. Haha. I didn't wanna do agriculture at all before arriving, hence I got into unnecessary stress, but in the end, all my jobs were in agriculture.

2. Jobs are available all year long

For example, apples are from March to June, blueberries from February to May, hoki fishes from June to September, you don't have to worry of being jobless as long as you're not picky. You can even work in hostels, farms, hotels, construction sites and many more.

3. 'Smoko'

"You will have 2 smokos and 1 lunch break."

"Eh what's smoko?"

I learnt about the term 'smoko' at this job, which meant smoking + coffee break. Usually it's a paid 15 minute break, and the number of smokos depend on the hours. During my first job I only had 2 smokos cause I only work 8 hours a day, but I had 3 smokos at the apple packing job.

4. I Really Had It Easy Back Home

I am lucky as I've been blessed with a cushy advertising job (Not exactly easy when I first started) and working outdoors in agriculture is seriously not easy. From battling the sun, to moving non stop for few hours, meeting your supervisor's expectation just for that minimum pay, it made me realize that I had it easy.

5. New Zealand is beautiful, even in orchards.

I see this every morning when I worked outdoors, and in Roxburgh, we are blessed with gorgeous sunrise now and then. It made working, better. :)

6. You'll make a lot of friends (And from different countries too!)

I think because we are all in the same boat, working hard everyday. It's also because we see each other almost every day too. Now if I go to Europe, Canada, Vietnam, Japan, Taiwan or even Vanuatu, you'll have friends there who can be your guide (Hopefully HAHA).

7. Agriculture is a big business

Every year, in different orchards be it mandarins, or vineyards, work is available whole year, not only the picking season. Your colleagues range from backpackers like yourself, locals, and also imported workers from nearby countries, and they return here every year.

8. It's actually pretty stress free

Although the job is hard, it's pretty stress free as you do not have to worry about work when you're done for the day. Back home, I still think about work, or finishing up some work even after I left office, but here, once you're done, you go home, cook, watch some movies, and restart again tomorrow.

9. You'll probably see vegetables / fruits in a different way

I didn't get sick of mandarin oranges and apples (Although I said I did) but I actually harboured more interest in it. I was excited when I saw NZ apples in a local supermarket back home hahaha, and I am proud to say that I know the different types of apples out there.

10. Once in a lifetime experience

Although the job is hard, I think everyone should at least try this once. You'll learn to appreciate the smaller things in life, understand that it is hard to make money and if you are always desk bound, it's a good experience to have and remember for the rest of your life. And if you're lucky, you'll get to witness the best of nature for free. :) The picture above was the best night of my life in New Zealand where I got to see the Southern Lights. 🙌 🙌

Will I do this again? Probably, when I get bored again heh. For now, I'm just gonna learn how to swim, earn more moneh and see what comes next year.

I Will Never Lose Anything Again

I think I hold the record of 'losing and misplacing things' in my family (and among my friends) and it's actually both frustrating for myself and them hahaha.

But this tiny little thing could actually help me once and for all!

How Tagla works is that you connect your phone to the device, and then if you can't find your stuff (like me) you just have to activate it through your phone, and it will keep yelling for you hahaha.

YHA NZ: Queenstown, Wanaka and Taupo

Sometimes when you are tired of sleeping in a van, you will want to spend some money on a proper bed hahaha. I did a month's roadtrip in a humble campervan, slept in campgrounds, weird places like a museum's carpark (Story for another time) and it could get a little hard at times especially during winter. Hence, staying in hostels will be a great break from the camping life, where you get to be under a duvet, springy mattress, hot shower, and a full fledged kitchen to cook your meals.

I always liked staying in hostels under Hosteling International, as I do not have to worry about the cleanliness, noise, and rowdy people as every hostel under them has a certain quality to meet. Most of my trips I've always booked under them even when I'm not sponsored, and one of the best hostels for me was in Utretch and Paris during my Europe trip last year.

YHA Lakefront Queenstown

In Queenstown, there are two hostels, one in town and YHA Lakefront which is a 10 minutes walk to town center.

I stayed in a 4 person mixed dorm, and it has plenty of space, a huge locker for your belongings, and a personal usb port at every bed. There's no ensuite bathroom in dorms, but the common bathroom was huge, clean and complete with hairdryers. :)

On the second floor, you get a huge kitchen, with plenty of dining spaces, and also a bar top to look at the lake while you feed yourself. There are also complimentary spices like salt, pepper, herbs and chili flakes!

And on the other side, it's a common lounge with plenty of couches and tables and plug points, and I saw many people around especially at night. Made a hugeeeee mistake of not taking photos of the lounge hahaha. Only found those 2 above. 😞😞😞

The good

YHA Queenstown Central

The name of the hostel really reflects its location, located between Shotover Street and Lakefront, and surrounded by liquor store, and bars (ahem), cafes, restaurants, shops like Kathmandu, UGG and many more. It's good because it's near to everything, but it's bad if you are in a budget hahaha cause you will definitely want to spend (I think I have a tiny shopaholic syndrome in me) some money like me.

Every room here comes with ensuite bathroom, TV, wardrobe a small coffee table and dressing table. I was given a 4 person dorm room, and although the interior is a little bit old as it was refurbished from an old hotel, it is still well maintained.

Because it's such a huge hostel with many rooms, the kitchen, lounge and dining area is all in one space, overlooking the lake. I was a little sad because of the size of the common area, but it's adequate. The kitchen is fully equipped, it has long tables to dine on, and comfortable couches with a TV and boardgames.

The good

Right in the middle of town

Convenient for backpackers with no car

The not so good
Small common lounge, hence might be hard to meet new people

YHA Wanaka: Purple Cow

Ah, how do I even began. I love this place so much it almost felt like home. Not sure if it's because I spent the most time here, but I felt really comfortable and really enjoyed my stay.

Room was spacious with ensuite and central heating, a huge locker for your belongings, with plenty of room to walk and put your stuff. There are also additional blankets available in the room for the cold, winter months.

The kitchen is huge with adequate cooking hobs, fully equipped with the things you need (Even a toastie maker) and you can get free vegetables and fresh herbs outside.

However, what I liked most about this hostel is the common lounge, where you are greeted with Lake Wanaka and the Southern Alps. The lounge is opened whole day, with the fireplace constantly going on, perfect for the cold winter days heh.

YHA Taupo: Finlay Jack's

The logo made me like the hostel the moment I saw it haha. They even gave me a sticker for my laptop. #gotbribed Located near town center, the hostel carries a pastel blue color throughout the building, interior and even the tables.

Finlay Jack's has a huge outdoorsy area, with pretty picnic tables, grass and hammocks for you to laze around. The weather was perfect when I was there and you get to see Lake Taupo if you're on the second floor. YHA's kitchen are always fully equipped and Finlay Jack's is no exception. I didn't manage to see the lounge but it has a public toilet (So you don't have to run back to your room), DVDs, XBox and books!

The 4 person dorm has a bean bag and built in wardrobe (DID I MENTION BEAN BAG?) with a coffee table in the middle and ensuite bathroom. The duvets and pillow sheets were really pretty as well, fitting Finlay Jack's theme. 😍😍

The good

Close to town, Pak' n' Save and Warehouse

Huge kitchen and BBQ facilities
Quaint little lounge with Netflix, DVD, books, XBox
Hammocks!
Fun and colorful environment

8 Tips to Maximize Your Disneyland Paris Trip

When they say that you will turn into a kid in Disneyland, it's real guys! IT'S REAL!

IT'S REALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!

I had the best time of my life, in both parks. My ticket enabled me to go to Disney World (For the older kids) and Disneyland (For the younger kids) and I officially declare January 14th as the best day of my life. To get to Disneyland from Paris city, just take the RER to Maree De Valley. The park is right outside the station!

Imagine the excitement when you step into this. The buildings, the decorations, the castle. T____T

1. Strategize the Usage of MagicPass.

The MagicPass is like the FastPass in Lotte World Korea. Only available at popular rides, this piece of important paper allows you to skip the queue at the allocated ride. So plan your time well!

2. Download the Disneyland Paris Mobile App

And how do we plan efficiently? We use the mobile app!

This app is the most handy app to maximise your time here. It shows you the duration of queues, opening hours for ride, and also which rides are closed. Showtimes and parades timings are updated live as well. Imagine my sadness when I found out that some of the rides are closed even before reaching Disneyland.

3. Visit Walt Disney Studios first

Reason being, Walt Disney Studios closes at 6pm and Disneyland only closes at 10pm. Rides that I enjoyed in Walt Disney Studios were Tower of Terror, Rataouille: The Adventure, Crush Coaster, Rock and Roll Coaster, so if you can get on these first. I wished I could play Tower of Terror multiple times but no, we need to strategize ya'll!

4. Bring own food if you want

So cute but so expensive. #poortraveller

Food is pretty expensive (Especially when it's in Euros omg) so if you want you can pack simple food like sandwiches and biscuits, but trust me, you do not have time to eat omg hahaha. The best time to eat is actually when you're in the queue for your rides hahaha.

5. Don't miss the Disney Parade

I was so happy watching all the characters parading, and each of them have their own car and theme song. Everyone sang to the songs (I mumbled) and the atmosphere So much nostalgic and Disney memories came rushing in. Remember to line up earlier near the Sleeping Beauty castle to get the best view.

6. Stay for the finale

(My pictures were all ugly I need to steal from the internet hahaha)

IT WAS THIS MAGICAL OKEH!!

The finale is the most epic part of the Disney experience. It completes you with the beautiful fireworks, projection mapping on the castle, and the storytelling just blows you away. I think I can watch this every night. T_______T

7. Buy Something at the Disney Store

After that amazing finale, it's then to spend more money! I had to buy something as memory (excuses), and there's a HUGEEEE Disney Store right outside the park. I think I spent at least an hour looking through all the stuff and ended up with a Stitch toy that is residing in my car now haha. I wanted to buy everything! T_______T

8. Remember to get the RER return ticket!

Almost everyone goes home after the finale, so you can imagine the queue at the ticketing booths. So just buy return ticket from wherever you came from and whiz through it easily. Remember not to lose your tickets yeah!

#cheechingyxhanoi: Fill Up Your Belly With These 4 Must Eats!

Hanoi, which is the north of Vietnam is one of the best place to go to if you want to travel alone. It is not as busy as Ho Chi Minh, and the place is also very near to other spots like Ninh Binh, Tam Coc and the famous Halong Bay.

I only had 4 days there, hence I didn't travel out of Hanoi, but instead I took my own sweet time, exploring and walking around. And hands on, the best thing about Hanoi is really the food! Different places in Vietnam have their own specialties, and the same goes for Hanoi.

Bun Cha

One of my favourite, most favourite, ultimate favourite (Insert more hyperboles here) is bun cha! My first bun cha experience is at not at the place Obama ate, but it's called Bun Cha Nem Cua Be at Duong Thanh street.

Basically it's white rice noodle (cha) and grilled pork (bun), and you eat them together with the savoury broth made from herbs and pork. Add some vege onto your bowl for fibre too haha. The crab spring rolls are optional, so if you don't want it, just don't touch it.

Total A+ comfort food gais. Best enjoyed while sitting on the small stool and looking at the streets of Hanoi.

Pho

I don't think I've met someone who dislike pho. How can someone hate a bowl of warm soup paired with chewy rice noodles and meat. :') I always prefer the beef version heh heh. I was lucky that I stayed at Old Quarter, hence all the best place to eat is all within walking distance.

This is Gia Truyen, which serves only beef pho. Nothing fancy about this place, except it's always full with people.

Gia Truyen only serve 3 types:
Tai nam (Rare + flank)
Tai (Rare)
Chin (Well done)

I chose rare, paid at the counter, collected my bowl of noodles and shared table with strangers. I was really satisfied sipping the sweet broth and chewing on the beef and noodles. T_____T

Banhmi

When in Vietnam, we eat banhmi! When in Hanoi, we eat from Banhmi 25! The best part about this tiny little banhmi stall is that it's only 20000 (RM3.80) dong for barbecued pork with pate banhmi. The cheapest in the menu is banh mi pate for only 15000 dong. They also have vegetarian banhmi with egg and cheese for similar pricing.

At first, I was a little reluctant to try banhmi with pate (minced liver O_O) but I was like, the heck, I'm already here might as well eat an authentic banhmi lolol.

Bun Thang

I stumbled upon this when I did not know what to eat, and was so hungry I just went into the first shop I saw. Behold, this is bun thang, which basically mean chicken noodle soup haha.

I liked how such a simple noodle soup can be so satisfying, and the vermicelli is not like the one here, where it's slightly thicker. I could eat this everyday. :')

Ah Bali.

The place where handsome surfers and good carby food resides. Let's not forget that all the Pokemon Go gyms in Bali is level 10. :( :( I was there over the weekend for Tough Mudder Bali 2016 (But that's a story for another day), and Bali Paragon Hotel graciously hosted me!

Bali Paragon Hotel is located only 20 minutes from Ngurah Rai airport, and the first thing I noticed about the location is that you can get various local food opposite the hotel, and if you are craving for something more international, they have McDonalds, Pizza Hut and KFC in about 10 minutes walk from the hotel.

The room has ample of space, and it is definitely sufficient for 2 people. Amenities are complete, and they even provide toothbrush which could be a life saver heh. I had fun rolling around my king sized bed nyeheheh.

But they called me Mr. T_T

I actually watched AFC channel every night like an aunty hahaha. And they have a hugeeee full length mirror for some vanity before heading out. A international plug point is present on the table, as well as a USB port point, although it's only applicable to Premier rooms as my friends on the 5th floor does not have it. Do remember to check properly before booking yeah?

The receptionist were all fluent in English, and I really loved the waiting area as they have huge sofas for you to be lazy in. The pool was so inviting omai and they even have slide for the kids. How I wish I'm smaller hahaha.

The next day, I shifted to Nomina Villa.

This is the breakfast place. Imagine eating your breakfast overlooking the blue sea. This is the life. Nomina Pecatu Villa is located around 35 minutes from the airport, away from the hustle and bustle of Bali. It's the perfect place for you to relax and just chill. Too stress? This place is perfecccttt!

The villas are surrounded by greeneries, and also an infinity pool! Who does not like infinity pools right? :D :D

I stayed at Villa Akasu, which is at the highest elevation of the whole place. It has 2 king size beds, and a huge bathroom! It was too big of a place of someone like me, but it'll be perfect for a quick getaway with friends or family. :)

The breakfast here is not buffet style, but when you check in, you choose which breakfast set you want. I opted for the western one, that comes with egg of your choice, yoghurt and fruits. Although I think I should have opted for the Japanese one where there's teriyaki grilled chicken nomnomnom.

But the best experience of the stay at Nomina Villa is this. Right outside my room is this...

I stood here looking at the waves and sky and trees for at least 15 minutes. It was that peaceful.

If I have a sentence to sum this place up, it's 'I will never use my brain here'.

Hanoi: 4 Different Types of Coffee You Must Try

Vietnam is synonimous with its coffee. I really really really really (Really x infinity) love Vietnamese coffee because of its distinctive aroma and strong taste. The first thing I did after I checked into my hostel was to hunt for coffee!

Vietnamese Coffee (Ca phe da)

The cream of the crop, authentic Vietnamese coffee, either black or you add a little condensed milk to it. I usually drink black but I cannot resist the latter as it's really, really delicious haha. Ca phe da is made from medium to coarse ground coffee and is dripped using the traditional coffee filter. Prices range from 20000VND to 30000VND depending on where you go. I find that it's cheaper in the many cafes around than buying off street stalls, not sure why. o_O

Coconut coffee

There's this chain of cafe called Cong Caphe is a military themed cafe, and the pricing is on the steeper side but you can to enjoy the WiFi and comfortable seats, why not right?

One of the most recommended one is coconut coffee. I love coconut and coffee. This was around 40000VND, still cheaper than the blended drinks here in Malaysia!

Bed of real coconut slushie on top of strong Vietnamese coffee? Sign me up!

Yogurt coffee

In the bid to finish all my money before departing to the airport, I bought yogurt coffee from the same cafe. Who knew yoghurt can go so well with coffee. Vietnam, you are doing coffee right! It feels like drinking a smooth concoction of milkshake, and the yogurt toned down the strong bitter taste of the coffee, making this a very enjoyable drink.

Egg coffee

If you do not fancy coconut or yogurt in your coffee, why not try egg coffee! Famous place to have it in Hanoi is in Cafe Giang.

The egg made the coffee really frothy, but I don't really like it. It's too sweet for me, and I could not really decipher the taste. Maybe it's too adventurous for me. Haha.

Cannot wait to go back and drink more coffee and explore Vietnam again! Seriously it's one of my favourite country to go to haha.

Why fillers?

Fillers are used to ‘fill’ certain part of our face such as deep lines, sunken areas, or enhance a particular area of our face including lips augmentation, nose and chin augmentation. It is commonly used to treat dark eye circle area and also sunken cheek area to give one a more rejuvenated look. There are many types of fillers available in the market, from permanent to temporary.

So why do you choose Hyaluronic Acid fillers over more permanent solutions?

Non Permanent

Hyaluronic acid fillers are more widely used as it is non-permanent, lasting around 1-2 years depending on the brands and is reversible with no surgery needed. This is because hyaluronic acid is actually found in human body in our skin. It's easily accepted by our body and it will be dissolved by hyaluronidase which is also found in our skin.

Flexibility and Quick Process

In the case of over injection, the doctor can dissolve or reshape the result, or in some cases, and we can even add more to further enhance the result. A usual procedure are done in about 15 mins so it is often referred as lunch time procedure because you can do it over lunch and return back to your office immediately after treatment. For patient who has multiple treatment done before, they usually will op for more longer lasting fillers.

There’s no downtime after fillers, hence you can go out straight away hahaha. The results are immediate so go and flaunt them yo!

Are there any complications?

The only complications that I experienced was a slight bruise for first 2-3 days and nothing more. Although, you might feel that the affected area is slightly tender, but it will fade away in 2 – 3 days. I was afraid to apply pressure to it too, hence I was quite careful the next few days. There are some reported rare complications such as infection, skin necrosis or blindness, so its important that you find an experienced doctor to do the treatment for you!

What's Hyabell?

Hyabell is Hyaluronic acid dermal filler from Germany, and promises natural results. It is CE approved by EU’s guidelines (Like the FDA approved in the US), and is launched in the Malaysia market this year.

There are 4 Hyabell variant:

Lips | Basic | Deep | Ultra

For lips and basic variant, it is mainly used for lips contouring and to tackle wrinkles, and can last up to 9 months. For volumizing facial treatment like facial contouring and treating deep wrinkles, Hyabell deep and ultra will work best. However, do consult with your doctor first hand and let them recommend which one suitable for your skin condition. No 2 person has the same exact problem.

For my nose, the variant used was Hyabell: Ultra where it’s formulated specially for facial volumnizing and chin, nose, or jawline augmentation. Ultra can last up to 14 months yay yay! I seriously hoped that my metabolism is not that great because the greater it is, the faster it dissolves and disappear Of course, the friendly staff in Sliq Clinic did give me a detailed instruction on how to take care of my treatment, what to do or what not to do after the treatment is done.

What's Lidocaine?

Hyabell is very suitable for people who are afraid of pain hahaha because of Lidocaine. Lidocaine is actually local anesthetic, and it reduces the pain during injections. I literally felt nothing during the procedure.

I’m interested in my first filler! What should I do?

It is always important to talk to the correct person, to get an accurate advice, so talk to the expert face to face and have your query all ironed out during the consultation. I was bombarding Dr Steve with questions hahaha. Also do your research beforehand, to know about different types of fillers available or treatments so you can make a good decision for yourself.

But…. How much does it cost?

In Sliq Clinic, the treatment is charged per filler. So if you only need 1 filler for 2 parts, then it’s only one price. But of course, Dr Steve is going to advise you on that during the consultation.

So, I got a nose in less than 15 minutes at Sliq Clinic. No joke guys. Also, yes I'm becoming a vain pot hahahaha.

A little exaggerated, but I wasn't born with a tall bridge, and wearing spectacles is quite a hassle because of it too. I never really knew the importance of having a bridge until I got older. Haha.

Sliq Clinic is located at Oasis Village Ara Damansara, which is also a plus point cause I stay 10 minutes away woohoo. I think when it comes to beauty stuff it's wise to go to a clinic as it's more certified! Its interior is clean and minimalistic, like what a clinic should be.

Say hello to Dr Steve! My first impression of him is that, 'Wow this doctor certainly know beauty.' Hahaha.

There are many types of fillers in the market, from brands and ingredients. Usually, it is best to consult with your doctor or do your own research on which filler are suitable for you from budget and safety of the product. How it works in Sliq Clinic is that you buy per ml. Usually for normal cases, you'll only need 1ml but if you wanna improve your other features, then you can get more.

He explained to me what's gonna happen before the actual procedure. So this is Hyabell filler from Germany, newly imported to Malaysia. So, I'm like a guinea pig? Hahaha. Joking. This is a FDA approved filler like other premium brands, hence it's safe and do not have any side effects. Phew. Its main content is hyaluronic acid and it's the same component of our skin hence producing a very natural result. You wouldn't want to look like a witch hahaha.

Hyabell also comes with Lidocaine so that it will lower down the pain if your threshold is really low. Thank god my pain tolerance is pretty high so I only felt very slight pain. It's completely reversible so you can remove it without surgery. Hyabell lasts from 1 to 1.5 year depending on your metabolism so I hope mine can last longer as I workout a lot. T_______T

Also if you see the step 3 picture, it's really high, but it will be lower and more natural as time passes.

The whole procedure took only 15 minutes. Must be magic. Dr Steve gave me a nose bridge and pointier tip so that my nose will look smaller, and it will elongate my round face.

What happens after?

For the first few days, I felt a little pain when I accidentally applied pressure to it when I'm washing my face or my bad habit of touching my nose. My nose also felt oily and rough, but it only lasted for a few days. No shades of spectacles are allowed too because the filler has not hardened.

After a week, I went back to the clinic for check up.

Don't wanna laugh or cry hahahah.

The filler finally set its place, notably smaller and more natural and you can start wearing your shades or spectacles again!

Safety comes first in Sliq Clinic, and having Dr Steve as a certified aesthetic doctor, it'll ensure better results and less complications. Doing these kinda procedures on your (one and only) face needs to have the best outcome, so don't simply take risks yeah? If there's a movie that made me learn about something that I never thought I'll learn would be Deepwater Horizon.

So basically in 2010, the worst oil spill happened in the Gulf of Mexico, and it killed 11 men from the rig explosion. This movie is also a tribute to the victims of the disaster.

Why did I like it?

It's filled with action!

You may think that there's too much talking in the beginning, but those are important to set the story to prepare yourself on what's about to happen.

What happened after the explosion is very thrilling and it makes you root for the survivors.

Mark Walhberg

I think Mark carried his character well, and there were many memorable scenes that is still in my mind now. For example, 'When Mark Walhberg asks you to jump, you jump!'. I'm not gonna spoil it but go watch it heh heh.

Offshore and the Oil & Gas industry

I never knew much about the oil and gas industry, and I learnt a little more about it through this movie. Going offshore is so dangerous and exciting at the same time, and there are so many different types of people working in one single rig.

I like movies like this where it entertains you, but at the same time it teaches you a thing or two. Makes me gain knowledge ahaha.

The tribute at the end

This was the best part IMO. For the weaker ones, you might shed one or two tear heh.

1. Marvel at Marble Mountain (Omai it rhymes)

From the outside, it doesn't look like a lot, but as you explore, it is actually a cluster of five limestone and marble outcrops, which means you can spend up to half a day here if you want to see everything.

You can choose to climb the stairs or take the elevator up, and along the way there are many vendors and stalls that sell traditional Danang specialties like food and handicrafts. We took the elevator up, and was greeted by a wonderful panoramic view of the city.

As you follow the guided routes, you will be greeted with gardens, temples, pagodas and marble statues.

Of course, Marble Mountain is literally a mountain, hence be prepared to ascend and descend the many flights of stairs. It was not hard, but with the heat and humidity I wanted to shower straight away hahaha.

But, there are plenty of caves for you to hide from the heat as well! :P

2. Egg Noodles (Mì Trứng Xá Xíu) for supper

We arrived late in Danang due to flight delays, and I broke my 'no-supper-rule' as I was so stressed and tired from the whole ordeal. It's so cute the 'Xá Xíu' is actually 'Char Siew' in Chinese hehehe. Looks like we are all connected after all.

See that kimchi looking plate? It's actually pickled cabbage to be eaten with your noodles that have not arrived. Haha. And a special dipping sauce which I did not dare to try (Yes I am not adventurous when it comes to food at all)

I took the non halal version, but the noodles were so springy, and it's like a perfect supper when you have nothing to eat. I totally cleaned that bowl. So light and flavourful! Noms! Just like my favourite Bun Cha.

3. Stay in Samdi Hotel if you want to explore around the city

The organizer arranged Samdi Hotel as my accommodation, and the best part is that the hotel is only 5 minutes drive away from Danang Airport. Perfect for people who wants to go to the airport last minute. :P

It has one of the most amazing breakfast spread, with both local and international cuisines and the pool and gym was lovely! Because of the location, street food and shopping area are all nearby, up to 15 minutes walk to the nearest Big C and Highlands coffee. If you are lazy, Vietnamese coffee is just a few steps away.

4. Learn about the Champa civilization at the Cham Sculpture Museum

Cham Sculpture Museum is all about the sculptures, relics and beliefs from the ancient Champa civilization. Bet you never heard of this civilization right? The museum itself is not big, but it's very interesting to see all the sculptures that withstood the test of time.

Let cheechingy enlighten you a little.

"Champa used to be an independent polity from the 2nd century to the 19th century before they were absorbed by the Vietnamese state. Hinduism shaped the country and Hoi An was one of Champa's main port."

The sculptures here are dated way back to the 7th century, and most of them are still in great condition, albeit not having an arm or two haha.

I always liked museums that have sculptures and art cause I always amazed by how talented these people are. Such a pity that not many of us can actually make art their way ever since technology appeared in our lives.

Also found out that Champa civilization was quite occupied with boobs haha, as seen in many of the sculptures here.

5. Take my money, local markets!

One of the more famous markets is Han Market where you can get various local Vietnamese food and textile, but there are also smaller ones like Con Market which I stumbled upon after exploring.

I like visiting local markets because of the people as well, you can really see how they live daily and interact with one and another.

Remember to get lotus seeds, coconut and Vietnam special garlic. :)

6. Get smooth smooth skin at a Mud Spa!

We went to Galina Danang Mud Bath, and the mud spa is one of the main attraction there on top of jacuzzi, swimming pools and massage. So depending on which package you take, you can enjoy all of them in one day.

Oh, they provide swimsuits and flip flops too so you don't have to worry!

7. Pay a visit to the 4th tallest Guan Yin statue in the world

Guan Yin overlooks Danang city and the South China Sea, which is really calming to see her from far.

She is also surrounded by a temple, monastery, marble statues and bonsai trees which made the place really beautiful.

8. Eat this life changing grilled banh mi

Everyone knows Banh Mi, but have you eaten grilled banh mi omfgggggggggg.

At first I thought it was banh mi, then I suddenly saw her squishing the poor bread and plonk it on the grill omg!! Then chili sauce was brushed over and over again until the bread become crispy.

The bread is then cut into pieces, and topped with a scary green color sauce, and topped with pork floss, sausages, mayonnaise and grilled pork.

EXPLOSION IN THE MOUTH I TELL YOU.

9. Danang: The Next MICE Hub

With Danang gaining traction as one the most popular destination in Vietnam, it will push more effort in turning Danang into the next international MICE hub. Can't wait to see it happen!

4 Gelato Places You Must Try in Florence

When in Italy, we must eat gelato! Well, gelato has lesser fat than ice cream, and they melt in your mouth faster. BUT THE BEST PART IS THE VARIETY OF FLAVORSSSSSS FOUND IN FLORENCE! I was also in Rome, but I think Florence have better gelato, as it's not as touristy as Rome. I always believe in going to non commercialized places cause it will be better. :3

But first let's thank Italy for inventing gelato.

Ok back to business! I only managed to try four places in Florence, but all four places have distinctive characteristics to it, making gelato hunting more fun! :D

Gelateria Santa Trinita

This was the first gelateria that I visited, and boy, did it set the expectations for all the next places that I went.

The best part of this place is that you can sit along the cobblestone bridge, overlooking the river and people watching while savouring the huge 4 scoops of gelato (Yes, I was greedy and it was only 4.50euros!).

9 Money Saving Tips If You're Going On A Long Trip to Europe

Hello fellow adventurer! Looking to go on a backpacking trip on a budget?

Here's an important checklist if you want to head to UK or Europe for a month. I learnt quite a bit when I went for a month's backpacking trip, and I hope this list will help you if you're planning to go on an epic trip by yourself. :D

I did not bring a lot of cash as it was pretty scary to lug them around. So on certain places I used my credit card instead. If you are really in need of cash, just use the Free ATM withdrawal machines as the rates are pretty good as well. Avoid exchanging with money changer as it can be quite expensive.

Since I traveled to a few countries, I scoured Hipmunk and Skyscanner to get the cheapest tickets possible. I also used Seat61 to plan my journey more efficiently as it will show me traveling options and time.

When traveling within a country, you can also buy the tickets at the station itself without pre-booking. Did it when I went to Utrecht from Amsterdam.

Ryan Air
I took Ryan Air from Brussels to Italy, and you need to pay around €15 for 15kg bag allowance. Do note that they are really strict on your hand luggage as well so becareful.

Vueling
Vueling gives you 23kg free baggage allowance so it was a blessing. T___T No more lugging the heavy bags everywhere. I took Vueling from Rome to Paris and it was only USD4 for the flight.

These are definitely my must-have-apps when I was there for a month.

Citymapper
Apple | Android

Hands on the most convenient app ever. I arrived in London in the wee hours, and getting to my hostel was no problem at all, as it shows the cheapest and best way. The train and bus times are updated live as well.

Google Maps

Because Citymapper are only available in bigger cities, sometimes I rely on Google Maps too.

Tripadvisor and Foursquare

I use these a lot when I was finding for places to eat nearby, or to know what are the best attractions nearby as I do not travel with itineraries hehe. These are also great to see where locals eat, and find cheap but satisfying meals.

Uber/Lync
This is very handy when you have an early flight to catch and you do not want to pay more for cabs. I took a short trip from my hostel to the train station in Brussels for only €7 in a Mercedez Benz hoho.

Rick Steves Audio Europe
Apple | Android

Most of the museums have audio guidebooks with a price, but with this app you can just plug in your earphones and learn about the place with its comprehensive podcast. You must get this free app! Just download the podcast beforehand if you do not have internet connection.

But when it comes to getting connected on your travels, there are many options for you to choose from. I opted for Three prepaid, which has the 'Feel at Home' package where we can roam for free. It is only £20 for a month for unlimited data in the UK, which is perfect for me.

The package includes free calls to EU and 12gb data per month when on roaming.

Meals take up most of your budget so I practice this little trick. I have lunch at a nice little restaurant or cafe, and most of dinners are either supermarket meals or I cook myself in the hostel.

The local farmer markets are a great place to eat as well as you can get really wonderful meals at the fraction of the price. Plus there are usually free sampling so you can try out the different types of local food.

I like eating at museums too as it is no frills, and still delicious at the same time.

I mostly stayed in hostels as I was supported by Hostelling International. I love hostels because of the opportunities to meet people from different countries, and its self catering kitchen. Click here to read a compilation and honest review of all the hostels that I've stayed. At hostels are also where you can get helpful tips on free things to do around the area.

However in Florence, I had to book my accommodation last minute so I resorted to Airbnb. Remember to look for the instant book symbol if you are in need of a place to stay last minute as you do not need to wait for the owners to approve.

If you're under 25, and is a still a student, rejoice because you can get discounts on most of the attractions in Europe. :D If you have a student card, remember to maximize it as much as you can. Some cafes and restaurants even have discounts if you're a student so don't hesitate to ask.

The best way to explore and learn about the city you are in is to join Free Walking Tours. You only have to pay a small tip after the tour based on your own review with the guide. I love these as you will able to ask questions and make friends with fellow travelers that are in the tour group itself.

Most of the walking tours only require you to be at the meeting point but some might need you to book your slots at the respective websites.

Bonus tip! The dreaded part of any trips, the packing. Not really a money saving tip but here are some of the things that I packed to minimize stress.

I only brought a big backpack (45litre), and a smaller day pack (Which I sort of regretted, because I had trouble carrying two backpack at once, the day pack kept slipping off), hence I preferred a sling bag instead for my future backpacking trip.

So, what to pack to maximize storage?

Clothes

Top and bottoms

It was winter when I was there, hence I brought about 4 long sleeves, and also an additional 2 Uniqlo heat techs. I also recommend bringing heat tech leggings, thin and easy to just roll it in your backpack. A jeans will be your best friend as you can wear it over and over again.

Undergarments and socks
Around 4 pairs cause you can wash them.

Footwear

Bring a pair of good sneakers as you are going to do a lot walking. I also brought a pair of boots but sorta regretted it cause it was heavy and huge.

Scarfs and gloves

If you do not want to pack so many things, get your scarf and gloves in London or Europe as they are pretty cheap. A good wool scarf is only £2 in Primark, which is definitely more affordable than Malaysia.

Electronics

The less the better, your phone, iPad and a camera will do. One great tip is to bring an universal adapter that has USB slots so you can charge multiple devices at the same time. A pair of earphone is especially important especially when you are traveling from countries to countries.

Additional items that you might need

Water bottle
In London and Europe, there's clean tap water so save more money by refilling your water bottle instead of buying every time.

Ziplock bags
To keep things organized and to keep unfinished cookies fresh haha.

Notebook
To jot down your experience and places that you went, traditionally.

Extra foldable bag
So you can put your souvenirs and shopping woohoo!

Waist pouch

To keep your money and phone under your shirt, as pickpockets always roam around tourist attractions. I did not carry one though, but I hid my money in the inner pockets of my jacket and held onto my phone the whole time.

Swiss Army Knife

When you cannot find any utensils to eat your takeaway food, or nail clipper. I also saw a fellow backpacker cutting his cheese to be placed on top his baguette in the hostel. A versatile little tool.

Travel sized detergent

One bar of soap that lasts one wash cost around €1.50 to €2.00 so it's much cheaper to bring a travel sized one so it can last you the whole trip. I washed my clothes once a week so it was all good.

7 Amazing but Different Hostels to Stay in London and Europe

Hello! As you all know, I just got back from London and Europe last month. It was a 27 day backpacking trip, hence this post to show you where did I stay. It was mainly supported by Hostelling International group, and every hostel that I stayed at is so different.

I used to be very skeptical of hostels cause I was not familiar it, but my Canada trip under Hostelling International's Big Blog Exchange totally changed my perception.

London - YHA Central

YHA Central is located near Oxford Street (Think shopping, and Primark), nestled between buildings that houses Tesco and Sainsbury where you can do your groceries.

I got a 4 shared dorm with ensuite toilet. The room that I got was pretty small, but it's still adequate for a few nights sleep. There were plug points and a bedside lamp on each bed, and 4 lockers for each backpacker.

There's no free breakfast but you can opt for a continental breakfast that cost £4.95 but if you are saving money like me, you can make use of their huge self catering kitchen.

How to get here

I arrived in London in the wee hours, and getting here was no problem at all. I took the Underground straight to the vicinity. Stop at either Oxford Circus (500metres walk) or Great Portland (400metres walk) to get here.

The good

Offers discounts on major attractions like Madame Tussauds and the London Eye

Near Oxford Street for all your shopping needs

Huge self catering kitchen

Near Underground, and plenty of day and night buses around

In a relatively quiet neighbourhood with Tesco only 3 minutes walk away

Plenty of activities planned by the hostel

WiFi only at the common area

Rooms might be too small for some people

London - YHA St Pancras

I also managed to stay at another hostel which has the best location in London. As the name suggest, this hostel is right opposite St Pancras train station. And if you're a Harry Potter fan, Kings Cross is just next to St Pancras woohoo!

The 6 bed dorm room was big enough, and it was pretty comfortable as I had space to walk around. The ensuite toilet was a blessing, but one thing that was pretty troublesome is that there are no plug points at the beds. The plug points are concentrated at one corner, and the ones on the top bunker will not have access to it.

There's no complimentary breakfast, nor a self catering kitchen, but this place compensates for really affordable meals. The nachos with beef was around £6.95 and roasted chicken was £7.45. I bought food from Marks and Spencers instead. :P

How to get here

Take any public transport to St Pancras station and you're good to go! :)

Netherlands - Stayokay Amsterdam Vondelpark

Stayokay Amsterdam Vondelpark is located in the middle of Vondelpark, one of Amsterdam's biggest park, and is only a 20 minute walk to the city centre. I had difficulties finding the hostel at first because I could not find the entrance.

Old school building, just the way I like it.

I got a 2 bed private room with ensuite bathroom and toilet, a great view of Vondelpark, comfortable bed and natural lighting, what's there not to love about this place? The common area is huge where you can just relax and chill. You can also rent bikes to cycle around Amsterdam like the locals. :D

I really enjoyed the complimentary breakfast as well, especially with the various selection of cheese, bread, fruits and yogurt. Noms!

How to get here

From Schiphol Airport, take bus number 197 or 370, and walk 10 minutes to the park, or you could take a direct train to Amsterdam Central and then tram number 5 to Museumplein and walk over.

Middle of the park, so it'll be quiet at night

Netherlands - Stayokay Utretch-Buunik

This is one of the most beautiful hostel I've stayed in! Until today I am missing the whole place. T_____T To get to Utretch, hop on the next available train from Amsterdam Central and you'll be there in 20 minutes. The hostel is 5km away from Utretch city center, but with a bicycle you'll get there in no time at all.

The whole place is so picturesque that my mood was instantly lifted when I arrived.

The complimentary breakfast was up to par like Amsterdam, and they even had rocket leaves for your sandwich. So yums!

How to get here

Take bus 119 to Buunik from Utrecht Central, and walk around 10 minutes straight into the hostel. Our bus driver knows the area well and he's the one that told us to get down at the correct stop hehe.

The good

Nature is everywhere, perfect for those that wants to take a break from the hustle and bustle of city life

Mostly families stay here, so it will be peaceful and less rowdy

Walking distance to one of the best pancake place in Netherlands

Comfortable rooms and great view of the forest and stream

Complimentary breakfast

The not so good

Can be quite a walk from the main road especially with heavy backpacks

The shortcut from the city center to the hostel has no light, hence it can be really scary if you come back when the sun is down. I never cycled so fast in my life before

Brussels - Generation Youth Hostel Brussels

I like how Generation Europe is a complete hostel, from a common lounge equipped with foosball table and computers, to a bar, and a self catering kitchen. They even give you free Belgium beer to try when you check in. Walking to a nearby attraction was not a problem at all.

When I stepped into my room, I was instantly drawn to the attic like window. So classic hehe. The wooden floor gave the place a nice vibe too. Plus, the ensuite bathroom and toilet is so modern it doesn't feel like a hostel at all.

There's a large common area to just chill with by playing foosball and pool. Many backpackers were reading and having dinner here as well. Generation Europe also serve daily dinners for only €7.00 whch is pretty affordable.

Not sure how organic is the breakfast but it has a selection of wholemeal bread, ham, cheese and fruits. I did not dare to take the sugared donut. Haha.

How to get here

Take the metro Line 1 to Comte de Flandre and Generation Europe is about 10 minutes walk from there.

The good

Rome - Roma Downtown Hostel

It was no problem finding this hostel at all from our train ride from Florence. Only 5 minutes walk from Roma Termini station, my back and legs said thank you for staying here. The reception is on the second floor but they have rooms from the third floor onwards.

The room is large and basic, but with the additional dressing table and a MINI FRIDGE (Hallelujah) not found in other hostels.

The breakfast cost an additional €4.00, and it has white bread (Please provide wholemeal :P), cheese and ham, and 3 selection of cereals but my favourite part is the espresso. Such a great pick me up.

How to get here

5 minutes walk from Roma Termini station. Easy peasy. :)

The good

Mini fridge in the rooms.

There's a self catering kitchen with 2 microwaves.

Near Roma Termini station means it's so easy to get to the hostel. Buses to the airport stops at this station too. Major convenience if you have an early flight to catch.

The not so good

Breakfast is an additional €4. Fruits ran out really fast and there's no refill. :(

Can be quite far from a lot of attractions. The Colosseum was about 35 minutes walk. Walking tours were pretty expensive as well.

Paris - Yves Robert

Auberge de jeunesse Yves Robert is located in an eco-friendly district, hence this hostel is the perfect model of how a sustainable hostel can be. The building has a modern (I will call it hipster :P) facade, and it overlooks a train track. But no worries, as the windows are sound proof I didn't hear any running trains at all.

The rooms are simple, but I loved that little ledge at the window where I could sit and stretch my leg nyehehe.

I like how they have large spaces here, especially the bean bag lounge. Spent every night here with snacks and my iPad watching Running Man. :3

There's breakfast too, and of course, when you are in France, the main item on the menu is bread. Thank god they had yoghurt too phew.be

How to get here

Go to Gare du Nord or La Chapelle stop, and walk 15 minutes towards the hostel. Do becareful though as it can be a little dodgy if you're walking alone. Alternatively, take the metro to Marx Dormoy.

The good

It's eco-friendly!

Walking distance to Sacre-Couer and Montmartre

Great Asian food nearby

Near the Metro / Underground

The not so good

I had to pay €0.20 to print my Disneyland tickets. -_-

Breakfast is the same so you might get bored. Do go earlier so you can eat some fruits as they tend to run out really fast.

The walk from the Metro / Underground can be a little dangerous so be alert.

The shower here works with an interval so you need to keep pressing the button for a constant flow of water.

#cheechingytravels 4 Scenic Places Worth Going in Jeju Island

The first time I went to Jeju Island back in 2014, I fell in love with it. I had a lovely stay at Tae Gong Gak, and was first exposed to Jeju's scenic places with Yongmeori Coast.

This trip however, brought me to places around the island, so here are 4 more places that are worth planning a trip to!

Sangumburi Crater

Sangumburi is one of the many craters around Jeju Island, and it's a 40 minutes drive from the city center. It's a leisurely walk around the crater, but the best part of this place is the fields of tall flamegrass that blooms everywhere.

Photo opportunities are everywhere when you are here. We had so much fun running around and taking pictures nyehehe.

This place is definitely recommended if you like to appreciate nature, in a leisurely manner.

Entrance fee: KRW6000 (RM22)

Seosokkak Estuary

Located at Seogwipo, which is the south of Jeju, lies Seosokkak.

It starts with a little stream, then it expands to a bigger stream, and in the end the water flows back to the ocean.

It was raining that day so we did not managed to experience the transparent kayak nor the tue, a traditional flat wooden boats, where you can explore the river up close. :'(

At the end of the trail, a magnificent black sand beach welcomes you. But in my case, under the drizzling rain but I still had fun haha.

Aewol Coastline

The coastal road is a popular spot for people to take a stroll, go on a kayak ride, or just enjoy themselves at one of the many cafes there.

Rumor has it that GDragon opened a cafe here too. Drinking your coffee here means you get to look at the amazing ocean while sipping that much needed caffeine after a long hike.

Udo Island

This is like an island, within an island. Udo is named because the island looks like a cow lying down. I tried googling but cannot find the picture to support this claim, but it's real one! You can easily spend the whole day here, venturing around the island.

You have to board a ferry at Seongsan Port for a 15 minutes ferry ride at KRW5500 (RM20) inclusive of the entry fee to Udo Island. The ferry leaves hourly from 8am to 5pm,

You can get around the island via these 3 options if you're not driving
ATV / Scooter: KRW20,000 | Tour bus (Hop on & off): KRW5000 | Bike / Vespa: KRW10,000

It was really enjoyable roaming around the island.

We saw lovely pure white beaches, namely Hagosudong beach, which have crystal clear water, and Seobin-baeksa beach. The most intriguing thing about Seobin-baeksa beach it is composed of red coraline algae, which is shaped like tiny bits of corals.

Liddis!

We explored black sand caves at Geommeollae Beach.

And made friends with nature in that few hours in Udo Island.

Jeju is not all about its sceneries, and breathtaking views, but they have begun to attract the younger crowd with KPOP as well. Talk about strategy!

Cafe Aewol Monstant

Heck, GDragon even opened a cafe here! Cafe Aewol Montsant was opened only this October so we were pretty lucky! Words travel fast, and this place was already full when we got here.

GDRAGONNNNNNNNNN!

Finally, I am one step closer to GD! Lulululz. Price were pretty reasonable starting from KRW4000 onwards, and the place was huge. You can choose to sit inside or outside (Where you are facing the sea), and just enjoy the sea breeze with your cup of hot latte. Totally beat all the cafes in KL nyehehe.

PLAY KPOP

This is one of the best digital interactive museum that I've been to.

How it works is that your ticket acts like a key to a hands on experience with your favourite KPOP stars. This place is YG based, so you get to meet Big Bang, 2NE1, Akdong Musicians and even PSY.

This places uses holograms as one of their attractions, and some of the activities include:

Get the KPOP makeup! Rofl at the eyelashes.

Interact with GD's hologram haha. Shisha doesn't seem to be happy with his head on her lap.

The best one is actually experiencing the Hologram Concert. We purposely waited for GDragon's, but you can also experience PSY and 2NE1 at different timeslots.

Thoroughly enjoyed my visit there as the digital experience was truly remarkable. Cannot wait to see this concept expand to other countries!

Today, I am pretending to be a food blogger. (Cause I only know how to eat and not write mouth watering descriptions haha) But Jeju have so many good food I cannot help but to list them all out to help you decide on what to eat when you're here.

I'm pretty sure we are all very well versed on Korean food, from its glorious bibimbaps to delicious bulgogi. But when in Jeju, they have their specialties which is a must try.

Traditional Korean lunch

It was a feast at Hwa Mok Won Restaurant. You can find similar places that serves these across Jeju Island too.

So many choices, so little table space.

To eat this, scoop all the rice from the hot pot to another bowl, and then pour hot water onto the hot pot. Enjoy your meal slowly, chit chat, and when you're almost done, the rice inside the hot pot will be turned into nurunji (scorched rice) and you can finish it.

100cm hairtail fish

Jeju Madang Restaurant is special...

...because you can order this.

It wasn't just the hairtail fish, there were enoki mushrooms (my fav!), loads of radish and topped with a generous amount of spring onions. The fish soaked up all the flavors and every bite was a delight albeit you have to becareful with the bones.

There's a grilled version too, but I still prefer the latter.

Then if you can eat more, YOU CAN ADD RAMEN. GLORIOUS RAMEN.

Udo Island Specialties

We also spent half a day at Udo Island where there were plenty of things to see, and of course eat. Quaint little cafes were present around the island, but here are some of its specialties that are worth spending on.

Hallabong Ice Cream

Hallabong, named after Mount Halla, and also known as Apricosa (Lol scientific name) is Jeju Island's specialty and is dubbed as the sweetest orange. So imagine them in ice creammmmmmmmmmmm! I had this in Udo Island, so it came with a hefty price tag (5000 won / RM19 T____T), but it's pretty worth it when you are having it overlooking the sea.

Hallasan fried rice

Imagine eating fried rice with storytelling?

First, octopus with assorted veges come on board.

Then you fry fry fry, and eat. SUPER DELICIOUS I CANNOT.

Then when you are almost done, the chef will come over, and put in 3 bowls of rice.

The chef then fry them together, and shape the rice into Mount Halla, he then adds egg to form the island, and cheese to symbolize the citizens moving in. Super entertaining haha.

It was such a sinful meal, but SO GOOD. GOOD. CHEESE. ANYTHING WITH CHEESE IS GOOD.

Fresh (A little bit too fresh) raw seafood

Caught by the amazing female divers called Haenyeo, these seafood are served fresh, and raw. The saddest part about Haenyeo is that this profession will cease to exist in about 20 years because the younger women do not want these skillsets.

Eaten with gochujang, the seafood were pretty hard to chew actually, especially the conch and seasnail. The persimmons were delicious, and if you like the taste of the sea.

The seaweeed felt as if I ate it while I was diving in the sea. Worth an experience actually.

Abalone porridge (Jeonbukjok)

Traditionally, abalone porridge was a delicacy for the royal family. But now it's one of the most popular dish to be enjoyed in Jeju Island due to the freshness of the abalone and its nutritional value. You can find abalone porridge almost everywhere in Jeju.

I personally love it because it felt really healthy hahaha.

Heukdwaeji, Jeju Black Pork

It is said that the meat of black pig (where they have shiny black hair) are more tender than orrdinary pigs. It is richer in protein and in taste as well.

I am not a pork person, but many people seem to enjoy this especially when it is eaten, Korean Barbeque style.
