Where do I begin??????

I've just now really returned home after a year long vigil at my parents where my father finally lost his battle with Alzheimer's on October 14th of 2008. It was a long, exasperating, stressful, heart-breaking year, and that was for me. I can't begin to tell you what my poor mother(Primary CareGiver) went though, or my father(The Victim) of this debilitating disease.

I thought I would be able to talk about this by now but it seems I still cannot form into words my feelings or tell the story of this journey yet today. Maybe tomorrow......

Alzheimer's disease (AD), also called Alzheimer disease, Senile Dementia of the Alzheimer Type (SDAT) or simply Alzheimer's, is the most common form of dementia. This incurable, degenerative, and terminal disease was first described by German psychiatrist Alois Alzheimer in 1906. Generally it is diagnosed in people over 65 years of age, although the less-prevalent early-onset Alzheimer's can occur much earlier. An estimated 26.6 million people worldwide had Alzheimer's in 2006; this number may quadruple by 2050.

Although each sufferer experiences Alzheimer's in a unique way, there are many common symptoms. The earliest observable symptoms are often mistakenly thought to be 'age-related' concerns, or manifestations of stress. In the early stages, the most commonly recognised symptom is memory loss, such as difficulty in remembering recently learned facts. When a doctor or physician has been notified, and AD is suspected, the diagnosis is usually confirmed with behavioural assessments and cognitive tests, often followed by a brain scan if available. Aggression, mood swings, language breakdown, long-term memory loss, and the general withdrawal of the sufferer as their senses decline. Gradually, bodily functions are lost, ultimately leading to death. Individual prognosis is difficult to assess, as the duration of the disease varies. AD develops for an indeterminate period of time before becoming fully apparent, and it can progress undiagnosed for years. The mean life expectancy following diagnosis is approximately seven years. Fewer than three percent of individuals live more than fourteen years after diagnosis.

The cause and progression of Alzheimer's disease are not well understood. Research indicates that the disease is associated with plaques and tangles in the brain. Currently-used treatments offer a small symptomatic benefit; no treatments to delay or halt the progression of the disease are as yet available. As of 2008, more than 500 clinical trials were investigating possible treatments for AD, but it is unknown if any of them will prove successful. Many measures have been suggested for the prevention of Alzheimer's disease, but their value is unproven in slowing the course and reducing the severity of the disease. Mental stimulation, exercise, and a balanced diet are often recommended, as both a possible prevention and a sensible way of managing the disease.

Because AD cannot be cured and is degenerative, management of patients is essential. The role of the main caregiver is often taken by the spouse or a close relative. Alzheimer's disease is known for placing a great burden on caregivers; the pressures can be wide-ranging, involving social, psychological, physical, and economic elements of the caregiver's life. In developed countries, AD is one of the most economically costly diseases to society.

Thanksgiving evening and stuffed to the gills I sit here in the quite of my little home office surfing the internet for something new and relaxing to do, something that has nothing to do with food because just the sight of it right now could put me over the edge.

After about an hour of searching and seeking I came across a website Blogthings.com and this quiz that gives you an idea as to what you should be when you grow up just by picking one of their posted designs.

My results after taking this quiz were so far off the mark(lawyer, talk show host) I couldn't stop laughing. Which is a good thing...laughing. Laughter gets your heart pumping, brings a glow to your face and even burns calories. Anything that helps me burn calories is a good thing because my passion in life is DESSERT!!! So it only goes to say that when I grow up I want to be a pastry chef. Of course, this may never happen because I am 59years old and already quite grown-up. Best friends (commonly known as BFF) are very, very special people who hopefully will share in your life for many years, even if you move 1600 miles apart from one another.

My BFF and I have been friends since we can remember. I think we meet during grammar school. She would be walking her little brother in the carriage and I would be pushing my little brother and that’s how we pasted most Saturdays. These two boys still know and talk to one another also. Then some 38 years ago her husband was relocated to Houston, Texas and we found we had to make some major adjustments in our lives if we were going to remain friends and stay apart of each others lives. Though those 38 years we have spent countless hours on the phone bringing each other up-to-date on life’s little pleasures. Racked up air miles visiting each other for births, deaths, anniversaries, weddings and sometimes just to breathe each others air for awhile. We’ve sent ecards, jokes, pictures, articles and news via email to brighten each others day or just to say “I miss you”.

Your BFF is someone who you can share your secrets with and they will stay secret. Someone you can talk about your hopes and dreams for the future with and not get laughed at or ridiculed for your beliefs. They’ll be there to pick you up when you fall down and listen quietly while you rant and rave to blow off some steam. They’ll comfort you when your whole world falls apart and nothing good seems to be coming your way. They never judge or say "I told you so". They put you first when you call even if their most favorite TV program is on or they just sat down to dinner, or their in the middle of a major project…but… they know you need them more. Best friends are always there through the laughter, tears, births and deaths, marriages and divorces, lost jobs and new homes, the quite moments in your life and the ones that just make you want to rip you hair out.

If you’re lucky you get to spend a countless number hours with your BFF; going to events, parties, shopping, movies or just hanging out at the park or ice cream parlor(do they still have those?). In all of those hours spent together you get to know one another fairly well, so well that sometimes you can even tell when the phones going to ring and it will be them on the other end or you know that something is wrong but you don’t know quite what, then they call and the pieces start to come together. Its like your spirits have joined and you are one being. Makes you shake your head at times.

My most precious memories in life were when my best friend and I would go out on a Saturday night to one of the local clubs and then finish off the evening sitting in the town diner eating cheesecake and drinking hot tea. We talked for hours about everything and anything. Most times it was dawn before we knew it, time to go home and get some sleep before the next day began.

We still call each other as often as time allows because our respective families have gotten bigger, our children have children of their own and our personal down time is not exactly what we would like it to be. Our friendship continues to grow and I hope it keeps growing….we have plans for the future….something about sitting on a porch, rocking away, sipping hot tea and sharing a slice of cheesecake.

Did you know....that Memorial Day was first known as Decoration Day until the name was changed in 1882. The roots of Memorial Day go back to 1865 and the end of the Civil War. The traditional Memorial Day was held on the 30th of May until 1971 when congress changed it to the last Monday in May in order to afford a three day holiday weekend for all of us.

Memorial Day is dedicated to the service men and women who have fought in all the wars past and present. The service men and women who gave, and are now giving, their lives for freedom and country. If it weren't for these brave men and women we would not have the privileges that we so often take for granted. They have won for us the freedom to come and go as we choose, to worship as we choose, and to speak our mind whenever we wish to on any give topic. These men and women have sacrificed so much in the name of freedom. They have left their families behind to serve our country and to preserve our rights as free people.

Take time to remember Memorial Day and what it stands for by attending a parade, or visiting a cemetery to honor and remember our servicemen. Stop in at a VFW or American Legion Hall and say "Thank You" to the vets that made your country what it is today.

Memorial Day also marks the beginning of the summer season, even though summer will not occur until a few weeks later.
