2016 CPRD Girls' Youth Fast Pitch Softball

Calling all girls, Kindergarten through 8th grade

CPRD girls' softball program is joining with McMinnville Parks and Recreation to form a recreational softball league. This program focuses on fundamentals, sportsmanship and teamwork. Teams will have the opportunity to play home games in Newberg and away games at Joe Dancer Park in McMinnville, May 14 through July 16. Practices begin the week of April 11th.

Registration is open Feb. 15 – April 1. Deadline for registration is April 1. Please register online at cprdnewberg.org or at Chehalem Aquatic and Fitness Center (1802 Haworth Ave).

CPRD hires WH Pacific to develop master plan

Chehalem Park and Recreation District has hired WH Pacific to develop the master plan for Bob and Crystal Rilee Park on Parrett Mt. The master plan will determine how the District will use the property, from trails to event facilities. Developing the master plan is a progressive process which will take an estimated year to complete. Public input will be sought at various stages throughout.

The first stage of the work is WH Pacific will evaluate the property in order to ensure that natural resources will not be harmed. This first phase of the master planning process will involve mapping the existing trails, performing an environmental assessment of the natural and cultural resources, and preparing a site analysis which will identify special opportunities and environmental constraints. The work will start in March and be completed by June. The District will then present the findings to the public.

WH Pacific, Inc. is a multidisciplinary planning and engineering firm comprised of landscape architects, civil engineers, scientists and surveyors, with local offices in Portland and Salem.

Congratulations to Linda Barnhart, the grand prize winner of the Passport to Fitness promotion. Linda participated in several free fitness classes during the month of January, thus becoming eligible for the drawing of the grand prize - a full one-year family membership to Chehalem Fitness Center. Congratulations, Linda!

Other eligible prize drawing winners will be receiving keychains with a miniature fitness shoe. (They're cute!) CPRD staff is contacting the winners to notify them and make sure they pick up their prizes at the front desk.

Babe Nicklous dies at 83

Martin Thomas "Babe" Nicklous, longtime CPRD employee who worked for the District for more than 30 years, died in his home on Sunday, Feb. 7, 2016. Babe was 83.

A gravesite service will be held at 11 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13th at Fernwood Pioneer Cemetery on 500 Everest Road. A memorial service will follow at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 13th, at Zion Lutheran Church at 301 S. River Street in Newberg.

Among his many achievements, Babe helped in the planning and development of more than 18 new parks.

When he retired as assistant superintendent in 1998, the park formerly known as Pool Park was named in his honor as a lasting tribute to his long and distinguished career.

Babe was born in Newberg in 1933 and attended Newberg Union High, graduating in 1952.

For the next four years, he served his country as crew chief for F-89 jet fighters in the United States Air Force, returning home to Newberg in 1956 to begin civilian life. He worked for the City of Newberg, then transitioned to the newly created park and recreation district.

Babe Nicklous Pool Park was named for Babe. It features a basketball court, playground equipment, restrooms, walking and jogging paths and picnic tables.

Your Passport to Fitness is ready

What a trip! Tour a variety of Chehalem Park and Recreation District fitness classes for free during the month of January enter to win prizes with the Passport to Fitness. There is no cost and no obligation. CPRD wants to give you the chance to experience the fun fitness activities that park and recreation offers for your new year and new you.

CPRD has scheduled a “tour” of free fitness classes throughout the month of January, including Water Exercise (all varieties - deep water, co-ed and gentle/senior versions), Boxing for Fitness, Zumba, Aqua Zumba, Hatha Yoga, two different Tai Chi classes, Strong for Life, and Walk for Fun.

There is no minimum number of classes you must take in order to participate, only to become eligible to win prizes. Pick up your passport today at the registration desk at Chehalem Aquatic and Fitness Center. This holds your itinerary of classes to try. Take it with you for the instructor to initial. If you complete at least four classes, you may turn in your passport to the registration desk. The first 100 people to do so will receive a prize. All will be entered into the drawing for the grand prize - a full one-year family membership to the fitness center!

Zumba and Aqua Zumba instructor Jennie Delp says fitness is good not only for the body, but also the soul. Once people start moving, they are usually surprised to find how quickly they begin to feel the difference.

“Come and have a good time and de-stress, and the work out will be a side benefit,” says Zumba and Aqua Zumba instructor Jennie Delp.

“It’s easier to keep moving than to stop and start moving again later,” says Karen Maas, part of the fitness center team at Chehalem Aquatic and Fitness Center. “Staying active and staying healthy will make it a lot easier to mature further and further. Your mental and spiritual aspects will be healthier if your body is healthier. It’s a healthy philosophy to keep active, to eat right, and we have ways to keep active here.”

Public meeting on zoning changes to Bob and Crystal Rilee Park

A public meeting will be held to discuss a pending zoning change to Bob and Crystal Rilee Park from agricultural to be zoned as a park. This meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 20^th in the Falcon Crest room at CPRD Offices at 125 S. Elliott Road. This zoning change will allow the property to be used as a park, and will also allow hosting of events with a maximum of 100 people. There will be no amplified sound permitted after 10 p.m. The use of trails, including equestrian trails, will remain open and unaffected by this change.

Announcing signage on trail around golf course

Visit the newly signed Gettman Loop trail around Chehalem Glenn Golf Course. This 1.6 mile easy-to-walk loop circles the course through areas of woods as well as alongside the course itself. Just follow the signs in order to stay off the golf course cart paths. Mostly level with a few small inclines and declines, this trail includes surfaces of wood chips, dirt, fir tree needle carpet, and crosses short footbridges over the creek with bridges just wide enough to accommodate golf carts.

To get there, look for the two trailhead signs on Fernwood Road on the side with the pavilion and driving range (across the street from the pro shop). Park in the lot, it's free.

Three Rivers League Basketball try outs

Chehalem Park and Recreation District and Newberg Basketball will conduct youth basketball try outs for the upcoming Three Rivers Basketball season on Sunday, Sept. 27 and Oct. 4, at Newberg High School.

The Three Rivers League (TRL) is a competitive program for players with advanced basketball skills.

All students in grades 4 through 8 who reside within the Newberg School District are eligible. Students interested in participating are required to attend a minimum of one try out in order to be considered for team selection.

Boys’ try out times are 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. for grades 4 through 6, and 2:30 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. for grades 7 and 8, followed by the girls’ try out times of 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. for all grade levels.

A player try-out fee of $ 20 (nonrefundable) must be paid before a player is eligible to participate. The try-out fee will be applied to the $225 player registration fee for those selected to a TRL team. Players not chosen for the TRL will have their try out fee applied toward registration in the CPRD Jr. Tiger Basketball program (This is not a league program).

Practices begin in early November. Games will be scheduled for weeknights and weekends through early March.

Coaches are needed for both TRL and Jr. Tiger Basketball. For registration and further information, contact the registration desk located inside Chehalem Aquatic and Fitness Center at 503-537-2909 or visit the youth sports webpage at cprdnewberg.org.

Julie Petersen named Sports Coordinator

CPRD is pleased to announce Julie Petersen has been named Sports Coordinator. While she is new to the role of Sports Coordinator, her face is familiar in the sports department.

She has volunteered in the CPRD sports department for nine years, coaching soccer, basketball and softball; instructing in CPRD sports camps; scheduling practices and games for Three Rivers League and Jr. Tiger basketball and Little League softball; running sports clinics; helping with youth and girls’ NHS basketball; and supervising school facilities during CPRD athletic events.

“I have been involved because I care about children and think sports and recreation activities are essential to positive childhood development.,”

says Julie.

Julie currently serves as Newberg Little League Vice President and Newberg Youth Football Registrar.

Originally from Forest Grove, Julie moved to Newberg nine years ago. Her grandfather, John Paola, was Fire Chief in Newberg from 1969 - 1983. She describes her family as a “sports family.” She is the mother of one boy – Kyle, a senior at NHS, and a girl, Tori, a student at MVMS. Both of her children have been actively involved in CPRD programs.

Julie holds a Bachelor of Science, Health and Human Performance with an emphasis on Exercise and Sport Science from Oregon State University. For ten years, she owned and operated Fund Your Path LLC, employing six people. Before that she worked in computer programming and office support positions at Willamette Industries in Portland.

Recreation Supervisor Mark Martin says, “Julie has been heavily involved with the sports department and an asset for the past nine years through her volunteerism and support. She brings familiarity with our programs, and has relationships with CPRD staff, coaches, and our community partners.”

Pool renovation news!

Mark your calendar for an important public meeting to unveil site and floorplan - 6 p.m. on Tuesday, October 13th at Chehalem Cultural Center lobby. At this meeting, the design team will be presenting the proposed site and floorplan as well as conceptual images of the building. Anyone interested is encouraged to attend.
