Ubuntu GCC problems

Well, guess what: The Ubuntu copy of GCC is messed up. Proof: At configure time (compiling GIMP 2.6 and various development versions, I couldn't wait for 2.6) I get this: "C compiler cannot create executables". And when fixing it, the fix messed up the system. And when fixing it with its own instructions, it can destroy the system or refuse to fix. Apt-get is quite smart, since it warned me. So what next? I'm getting Debian.

Tangerine? What's this?

I spotted another annoying icon set, called "Tangerine". And it gives me even more deja vu than Fedora's Echo guideline page. According to Debian, it's a "icon theme worked on by the Ubuntu Art Team inspired by Tango". "Inspired"? It's just a recolored version of the icons! Have a look and see for yourself.

Non-rants about Tango

If you want to use the Tango icon theme, you can finally stop listening to my rants about distributions and desktop environments and finally start using it.
In Debian and Ubuntu, there is a package named 'tango-icon-theme'. That will install the Tango icon theme. In Debian you will also need to enable the 'non-free' section (silly Debian) to get the package. For the openSUSE RPM, it is available here (Warning: I haven't tested this).

The KDE people seem to have forgotten the point of Tango. They thought that they should make their own iconset that reminds me slightly of Tango. I'm not an neatness flamer, but since more and more applications are changing to Tango, including some of the most popular (such as Inkscape), KDE applications are probably going to be the programs that feel out of place, not GNOME.

There is a icon theme known as the Tango Desktop Project, which aims to keep the icons on Linux systems similar. I'm not an artist for the project. A few distributions are not helping with the project. Ubuntu doesn't use Tango but stays closest. On the other hand, Fedora isn't helping at all. They also gave me deja vu with the guidelines.

Finished learning Blender...

I have just finished learning what I need to know about Blender. Blender is a great program but it's rather complicated, but I now feel comfortable using it, thanks to a Wikibook called Blender 3D: Noob to Pro. If you remember, I did a rubbish video with Blender a while ago. That was for a competition, which I won anyway. No one knew where the other competitors had gone.

Tip: If you're using an image texture on a cube, remember to select 'Cube' in the Map Input tab in the tab with a red ball as its icon (I don't know the name) in the Materials section.

Yet Another Design Change

Here comes...
YET ANOTHER DESIGN CHANGE. I found that the centred block actually wasn't very flexible. Especially since more and more people are getting larger monitors. Therefore, I switched design. Now this design is white. But flexible. I also sped things up (yet again) taking useless things out.

P.S. I cheated with the new color scheme. Everything except the grays are colors from the Tango icon set palette.

Well done! You managed to not follow instructions or even read the instructions for playing the video. Here are some of the stories I've heard:

"Well, I tried to download the video, and it took hours. Then it wouldn't open!"

That's very nice. Read the post again in full. NEXT!

"A webpage came up and it contained a link saying Download. I was not happy as I could not watch the video."

I wrote "Download video". Not "Watch video". Later that person said:

"But that web page took ages! I thought it had the video on it!"

No. It took ages because your Internet connection is probably 14.4kbps.

I'm not sure you can follow instructions. Try again.

Wrigley's Ace K

Yesterday I discovered that all (if not, most) Wrigley's chewing gum contains Ace K (or acesulfame potassium, for scientists). That's a suspected carcinogen. Then later it got dismissed. Well, I'm taking a minimal amount of risks, so I don't get cancer.

France Trip

I have now just come back from a trip to France. Not Paris though. That's too... non French because of the tourists. Instead, I went to the North of France where I had a look in a confectioner's, enjoyed a lie down at the beach (I know!) and the Azincourt museum. The last was pretty boring.

Water Sports Trip

A few days ago I returned from a three day water sport trip. It includes accommodation but was nice to get home after the three days. I didn't capsize in any activities. And then there were one person who capsized deliberately, accidentally and while trying not to capsize and get off a kayak.

Behind the scenes update

Before I had a very inflexible way of managing my entire site:

One Google account for Blogger
One Gmail account for Google Pages

This was because I didn't know about Google Pages when I migrated my Blogger account to Google, and also because I wasn't sure how to sign up for Gmail to use Google Pages and merge the two accounts together.
Now Google now allow non Gmail users to get Gmail. I got Gmail and migrated my entire website onto the new Google Pages hosting. I then deleted my old Gmail account for Google Pages!
However, I might have missed a page when I was migrating, but I checked and everything seems fine.

How does your site compare?

Well, here's a question: How does your site compare against mine? Here are some things you need to beat to have a better site:

Consistency: When I browse ALL my friends' sites, every page seems like another website. However, my site and my mini sites have a consistent design.
Navigation: Most of my friends' sites just can't compare on this point. Whereas I have a navigation list on every page, my friends have a poor page list on the homepage (which isn't interactive or detailed) and on every other page, they have a link saying "Home". No navigation bar.
Speed: If your site's homepage loads faster than 4 seconds, that's pretty good. My friends' sites achieve a poor 12+ seconds (the worst being 17). That's enough to make me close the window.
Updating: My site gets updated with 1+ entry every week on average. My friends' sites? Only once about every 4 weeks.

Vim RULES!

I'm trying out Python and making a game in it. When I was selecting my editor, IDLE was basically rubbish. Then I tried Vim and it is EXCELLENT!

To turn on syntax highlighting you just have to save with the Python extension and there you are! There's no need to type any command. It is as simple as that! If you are going to use Python, I would seriously recommend Vim.
