ACS Members get limited access to ACS journals, outside of library subscriptions

Where are the books?

A quick reminder that books on 3LB are being moved to either the HDL (High Density Library, a storage facility) or the TFDL. Until the TFDL opens, both HDL and TFDL books need to be requested via the catalogue. Here are a couple of examples:

New SciFinder Tool and New Features

CAS today announces major enhancements to its SciFinder research tool. One new feature is SciPlanner, a ground-breaking interactive workspace that enables scientists to more quickly identify synthesis options for designing the best research pathways and approaches.

SciPlanner allows users to create customized reaction pathways as well as organize and manage SciFinder results in ways they find most useful. Users can integrate reactions, experimental procedures, substances, and references from multiple documents. Specifically, the new tool enables researchers to:
- For the first time ever, create complete reaction pathways from individual reactions across multiple publications that are indexed in the CAS databases.
- Visualize and consolidate preferred reaction strategies in a single place and combine them with references, structures, reactions, and substances.
- Create reports to share specific reaction pathways for assignment, distribution, and presentation to colleagues.

In addition, new convenience features have been added to SciFinder that allow users to:
- Sort reference answer sets by citation count to identify influential authors, research concepts, and potential collaborators
- Copy/paste ISIS/Draw structures directly into the SciFinder structure drawing editor to save time
- Extend searches to articles cited in MEDLINE references with the addition of citation data to MEDLINE records

"SciPlanner is taking research to a new level," said Christine McCue, vice president of marketing, CAS. "It allows scientists to better leverage CAS' authoritative content by organizing search results the way they want to help them to create new pathways and arrive at decisions faster."

CAS is now accepting applications for the 2011 SciFinder Academic Exchange Program (SAEP)

This extraordinary opportunity is for outstanding PhD chemistry students to exchange ideas about chemical informatics with CAS senior management, editorial scientists, and technical specialists.

Selected participants spend 4 days in Columbus, Ohio with CAS senior management and scientists to discuss how information gained through tools like SciFinder greatly help their research and to share what gaps they see in information services and tools. Students also get the opportunity to tour local research organizations such as Battelle Memorial Institute, The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center,
TechColumbus, and other local research organizations.

Additionally, participants are invited to join their chemistry colleagues at the 242nd ACS National Meeting and Exposition, to be held in Denver, Colorado, in August 2011. All expenses are paid for this unique experience, and participants receive a $1,000 stipend.

Incorrect e-journal records

The purpose of this training is to introduce users to the basic features of Reaxys. The objectives for the day are to take users through a reaction, substance, and citation query and to familiarize users with what the results windows look like for each case. We will run through exercises comprised of search scenario examples. Copies of the scenarios will be provided along with additional examples for users to try on their own time. The training will be an informal setting. Questions are welcome as we proceed. The goal is to provide end users with a solid foundation enabling them to incorporate Reaxys into their own research endeavors.

Both the American Chemical Society and Nature have posted Web pages for IYC.

ACS' is 365: Chemistry for Life. Browse through 365 days of chemicals or chemical breakthroughs, or select from four categories of chemistry: energy, environment, health, materials. Today, it's Fermium: http://iyc2011.acs.org/2011/01/16/fermium/, tomorrow, it's artificial snow.

Nature's International Year of Chemistry page is a "special" and will be updated throughout the year.

CrossFire - now Reaxys (and Web-enabled!)

CrossFire was discontinued as of December 31, 2010. The library has signed a license for Reaxys, its Web-equivalent. Reaxys can be accessed via: http://ezproxy.lib.ucalgary.ca:2048/login?url=https://www.reaxys.com/

Signing up for an account is optional, however, it allows one to change the default structure editor, save searches, and receive alerts. More information on Reaxys is available here (and more info to come.)
