Ok, so it’s been a lil while!

Here is the first of two tunes I’ll post. It’s a rough and ready blast of a noise track, done mostly with Reaktor.

Been meaning to do this for a little while, but thought it would be too much of a distraction from writing music. It’s not though, it can be very quick to create, so maybe useful?

More chilled melodies over strange glitchy backgrounds.  I can’t say too much about the track, because this is starting to become a style for me.. and I guess you either get it or you don’t by now.  I’m still concentrating on finding a more musical style relating to melody/harmonies and expect to put this into practice soon in releases.. (mainly researching at the moment).

This is a track that started out as a chip tune (been meaning to write another one for a little while now) but it went in a different direction. Not quite sure what genre it falls into now.. wish I didn’t have to decide that when uploading it to music sites.

I’m quite pleased with this one at the moment. Hits a vibe I’ve been trying to get to for a while and never felt satisfied with in my stuff, it’s abstract without being dark.

Had a bit of a strange time after Christmas and did a half dozen tracks and loops I didnt like very much and never saw the light of day .. had to change things up and try something different..

 It’s not a finished track, not mixed .. it’s a synth improv/sketch .. but you know when you just don’t want to throw one away (about a month old now)… this is one of those.. so hopefully some may like it a bit too.

Dog Star

Someone started a challenge on KVR to write a track with one synth, well one synth and one drum machine.. originally Iblit and Ersdrums… and nothing else!  The rules since changed to other things, but I was curious..

.. so here is my effort with 1 synth (Iblit), 1 Drum machine (ErsDrums) and no eq/fx etc of any kind.. (did double a couple of tracks up to get a chorus or delay effect on some voices).

The title for this track came from a suggested tag on xbox live which just caught my fancy… speaking of which, I notice a game called Quarx has just appeared on Xbox Live Community Games – featuring music I donated to the project. This is an abstract, ambient soundscape with several repeating patterns intertwined and interacting. I’m still playing with Phillip Glass style ideas.

Wow, a lot of tracks from October!  And pretty pleased with 2 or 3 of them too.. Here is one more that I finished off last night. It’s a kind of uptempo, abstract, slightly dirty glitchy thing.. is that a genre?

A soundtrack type piece of music, inspired by the tilt-shift time-lapse videos of Keith Loutit (worth a look!).

.. and also my first play with Philip Glass type repeating patterns – which I think came out ok’ish, but hoping to do better next time (this is a kinda guesswork before I did some actual study of his stuff).

It has 4 sections to accompany different themes, roughly.. sunrise, busy people in the morning, more people in the afternoon, evening. But you will have to imagine the video, or play it alongside one

Some new music. It was originally written as a game loop for Quarx (xbox 360 see below), and may still be used with some alterations – not sure yet.

Anyway, I like some of the sounds so I’ll post this mix as is..  in case you do to.

I will have this EP out if it kills me!  Here is the first track I’m releasing on the next EP (soon, but not too soon).  It’s a pretty chilled out techno piece, and I’m pretty happy with how it has turned out – though there may always be a few tweaks in the final EP version

This is another single synth track, this time using Oatmeal. There is just a single breakbeat low in the mix (played solo at one point), otherwise it’s all from this synth.

Not sure what I think about this one, it’s certainly flexible.. and I think there is certainly a lot more in there than I got out of it… but I didn’t really warm to the sound.. Then again I think that may be partly due to the style of track I went for, and I might try the exercise again in the future with this one, and a different style of music.

This is an in game track for the Quarx game. It’s a chillout thing, with a couple of sounds that remind me of Pink Floyd.

It hasn’t been approved yet so could get changed around a little, but I like this mix so thought I’d post it anyway. Expecting to do one more, more up tempo track for this later on, but for now I’m looking to get back to some other projects (including the long promised new EP release).

Been a while since I posted new music, partly due to losing my PC to a motherboard failure, and ending up with a new PC. Nothing lost data wise, but lost a week or so of time.  To get back into the swing I’m writing a few short demo tracks using some free VST synth or other. 

This synth is called 38911Bytes and is by odosynths. It’s a great little synth (one of a few on that site), based on the C64 chip. It`s a free demo, donationware for a fully tweakable version.

I entered a competition on gamedev to score a cartoon called ‘Luftwaffles’. This is my entry (score only). It’s the first orchestral piece I’ve done for a long time, hoping to do some more work like this soon.

For this one, actual music is at the start, middle and end.. with the remainder being spots for the action. I’ll post the dubbed video later if it’s allowed, but the original can be found here: luftwaffles

This track is unusual for me, because it’s an old tune redone.. It was originally a midi file I did about (gulp) ten years back, for the AWE 64 soundcard..  It’s still pretty fun to write for those old GM soundsets and try get something from them.. Anyway I decided recently to revisit it as an exercise in mixing/arranging.

Even though it came out ok, it’s not a very satisfying thing to do and I prefer the original I think. Anyone who has taken a demo into a studio will understand what gets lost sometimes..

There is something about those old 1M soundfonts!.. I recommend anyone who enjoys writing music to try writing for them once or twice. It makes you work harder, and learn more!

Anyway, you can judge for yourself.. here are both old (unfortunately not on it’s native card, but close enough)  and new.

Some samples from “3 Space Themes” and “Synthstruck” are being used for ambience in a new XNA game that looks quite interesting. The demo is here.

Got some ideas for a new spacey synth thing when I find the time too.

t00nz – welcome to my head

There will be just one more track on the EP (my personal favourite of the three actually) because I’ve not been able to get a decent mix of the final track I was intending to release in time.

I’ll release the last track and the EP archive on Fri/Sat.

I’ve had some intermittent problems with a bandwidth error on the mp3 host (which is google pages at the moment). So I’ve gone ahead and registered a domain (www.t00nz.net) and bought some proper hosting.

Hopefully I can sort out any hosting issues and eventually create a custom page for the EP releases.. but for the forseable future I’ll be concentrating on this blog and all (hopefully) interesting releases will go up here first.

Relief! The EP is all but complete. It’s been hard work, but I’m quite pleased with it.

I’ve decided to release the first track now, and then the EP itself when the last mixing/mastering run is done. The EP itself will be a zipfile containing all the tracks, track notes and cover art.
