Day 365 - Dan

This blog started as a challenge from Robin, to me, to commit to something, everyday for a year. She proposed it originally as a solo project, but then brightened up to the idea of a collaboration. It was not always easy. There were many late nights where I was trying to keep sleep at bay as I was editing and writing my entries. There were groups of days where I would fall behind because of some reason and found myself writing three or four blogs at a time. It was not always easy for Robin to work with me nor I with her, her Felix to my Oscar. Robin even gave me a few opportunities to bail out, and let her finish it alone. The most valuable experiences in my life have been when I hunkered down and stayed the course until it was finished... to honor my commitments and finish what I started.

Before this blog I liked photography. I took pictures when I traveled, of events and on adventures here or there. Today I love photography. I can’t ever imagine a time when I will not be looking for the next image to capture, or traveling without my camera, or not posting a photograph here or there. I learned the technical aspects my camera this year. I learned a great deal more about Photoshop. I experienced wonderful events with a wonderful woman.

The blog started as a way to “dig into the creativity of both of our hearts”, to look at the world again through creative eyes. It was a resounding success for both Robin and I.

Here is post 365, the last one for CherryLime, but the beginning of my renewed inspired, creative life. I appreciate everyone who followed us. I was posting pictures for myself, but I have been happy to share our experience with everyone who takes an interest in our lives.

Day 365 - Robin

This is the end... I am sad for CherryLime to stop. Dan and I have grown in so many ways, as photographers.

As promised, I will continue blogging, and photographing. With only a day to set things up, I didn't realize how hard it was going to be to conceive, shoot, and edit a series of shots - then set up a whole new blog design. It was fun, though. The new blog is called Robin Anderson Photography - "Photograph with a Twist" is my tag line.

The first series or post is titled - Something Worth Doing. On such short notice, the photographs were taken around the house... but in the future, I will be sure to include more locations in the shots. I hope you like the new project. I will welcome other photographers' work and will give them credit. It will fun to reach out to all my friends who would like to publish some of their shots as well. Get ready Laney, Sheila, Gary, Kat, Susan, Meg, Dan, Brian, Tom, Mary Kay, and anyone else who would like to contribute. Each project will be theme based.

Day 364 - Dan

I saw this image and had to pull over today. I have driven by this out building on most days over the last year, but it wasn't until today that I really saw it.

How come we can look at something a thousand times and see nothing and then on the 1001st it appears. Now, I will now notice this window every time I drive past. Once we see the "something", we will always see it.

Day 364 - Robin

I started this blog with self doubt and fear of the unknown.

I am ending this journey having empowered myself as a woman, mom, artist, photographer, and individual.

I considered continuing, but in the past few days, I have come to a place of rest. This blog had a purpose and a time frame within which to work out who I am as a photographer.

The Tao says, "... when a purpose is achieved, stop. It is what is natural."

2011 will forever be remembered as one of the best years of my life. With great sadness and great joy I am crossing the finish line.

There will be more projects, but not under CherryLime. Tomorrow's post will be a sample of what is to come for Robin Anderson, the artist/photographer. It will be a sample of the next blog project - along with a link on how to find it. I will post to CherryLime for the last time tomorrow, Day 365.

This photograph was taken by Dan of me in Neptune Beach, Florida at sunrise on our last day on vacation, (December 30, 2011). I love my hometown more than words can describe, and I miss it every day that I am not there, (more than words can describe). Maybe some day my journey will lead me back home again.

This is one of those places that as I drive by I tell myself, "you need to come back and take a photo when you have more time", well tonight I made the time. It is the picture of the little train office/building off the Dundee tracks at the end of my street. I wanted to call it a train station but it isn't. I remember walking the dog on a rainy night and looking at this building across the street thinking how interesting it looked at night. So with only a few days left, I stopped by on my way home tonight.

Day 363 - Robin

Dan and I are counting down... 3 more days. We got up early to catch the sunrise this morning. Even though we stayed out for about an hour after the sun came up, the really good lighting only lasted a few minutes.

Here is my best shot from the morning. It was taken off a dirt road along a creek that feeds off the Raison River.

Robin and I went out looking for photos for the final days of the blog. The day was cold and blustery and we were under some time constraints. Ww wondered our way to Fort Meig's in Perrysburg Ohio. I have lived in the Toledo area for 30 years and never been there. So when I finally do go, it is on an extremely unpleasant, cols grey day.

So as we are leaving the sun miraculously comes out and the sky cleared. I walked over to some cattails and tried to capture an image that reflected the brilliant color change.

Day 362 - Robin

You would never know it from looking at this sweet little Basenji that he can reach anything that is left on the edge of the counter. In our house, we call it "counter surfing". Even though we all know to watch where we leave things, we all still make the mistake (every now and then).

Last week, I made 4 hamburgers. I served all but one to the kids... pushed the plate to the back of the counter, (or so I thought) and went to sit down for a few minutes. When I returned the last hamburger along with the paper plate that it was sitting on was missing. Tate was trotting around doing a happy dance. I wanted to kick his butt!!!

I couldn't resist the temptation to do a self portrait in this 1810 mirror in a museum that I toured today. Dan and I had a chance to buy a mirror just like this 2 years ago and passed, (less than $200). Later, when we went back to buy it, it was gone. The moral of that story is - he who snoozes, looses.

I saw this nail sticking out of a beam of wood. I grabbed it and tried to pull it out. It felt like it was embedded in granite. Just as well since I was at a historical site and yanking the nail out probably would have been frowned upon. Looking at the nail and after my experience I can't help thinking about the "Sword and the Stone".

This is a detail photo from the auto show. It is one of those photos that I whipped past a number of times not paying any particular attention to it. Now as the week is coming to a close and I am thin on photos to pull from, I start to spend more time looking at the photos that did not originally jump out at me.

I like the reflective images in this mirror. It was easy to miss as I click on by, but once I slowed down and give myself a little time to reflect, I realized that I liked it a lot.

This guy was playing sax in the streets of downtown Detroit. I think it is the same guy that plays at the Eastern Market downtown in the summer. All I could think of when I see him all bundled up like that was... "Dude, catch a bus to where it is warmer". Wouldn't that be the life? - panhandle in Florida in the winter, and in Detroit in the summer.

This is a picture of Cooper, our neighbor's dog. He reminds me of my old dog Angus, who would run to the couch and watch me pull out of the drive way when I left. Its as if he is saying, " you are leaving me and never coming back". Of course when I returned the greeting was like, " I can't believe you came back". Dogs are a great gift, if you have never had one, then you are truly missing out. Of course, the dogs in the house today are more of a lesson in patience, but that is another story.

This is a picture of the parking garage just outside of Fishbone's restaurant in Greektown. I like the picture for its simplicity. The red brick building in reflection of the neighboring building is actually a great deal larger than what your eye sees. I also like the illusion that you are looking a the whole building, but in reality it is the mirrored image of it. The only clue is the smoke stack.

This is my favorite shot from the car show. Because the people's faces are not exposed, I don't have to worry about getting permission, but I was still able to have show human scale.... although my affinity for low angles can make the scale seem out of proportion, (even more reason to have people in the shot, lol).

I think it is funny how the car looks gigantic!!!

I have said in the past that I'm not much of a car guy, but there are some cars that get even this non-car guy's blood pumping. Six hundred and fifty horsepower. Six hundred pound-feet of torque. Over 200 miles per hour. I would probably kill myself in a car like this, but what a way to go. I even like the unusual blue color. It stands out in a crowd, (not that it needs any help). This is a detailed photo of the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500.

Dan was driving past this alley and I saw something out of the corner of my eye. We went back and I realize that I saw a cluster of balloons that were stuck in the fire escape. I thought it would make a cool shot.

Have you ever tried to make something happen with all the right intentions, but just can't get the idea to gel? Well, this photograph feels kind of like that. No matter what I do to edit this photo, I can't really get it to look like I saw it through my eyes. I guess the moral of the story is - you have to start with a technically good photo in the first place, but sometimes you just have to give up the ghost.

We went the Detroit Auto show and spent all of about 30 minutes at the show because of the crowds. The older I get the less I can deal with crowds, (especially to look at a car that I will not be purchasing). I'm not really even a car guy, never really worked on cars but there are those few cars that get my blood churning when you see them.

When we were making our thirty minute loop for the show I caught a hint of green through the huge crowd gathered around it. It is a concept car of a Camero jazzed like a Hot Wheel car. Robin and I split trying to get a decent vantage point to snap some photos. I got right up front and spent a few seconds snapping some detail photos of the front grill. I thought how interesting the reflection was with the paint.

When we got home it took Robin showing me her pictures of the whole car for me to realize that the reflection was a mocked up Hot Wheels track underneath the car. Now when I look at my photo I can clearly see it but not when I was there.

The picture I'm posting was captured using the "Robin technique". What is the Robin technique you ask? It is where you are carrying your camera around your neck or down at your side and you blindly auto focus and take pictures. You won't know what you get until you review your photos at home. I don't know how kosher this is but it is fun.

This is the standard view of Greektown in Detroit. Nothing special, I have seen the scene a thousand times, but I had never taken a photo of it.

Greektown always seemed like a summer endeavor, but Robin and I decided to try the Detroit Auto show this year. In the past, the car show has been kind of boring. But Robin had never been and she had tickets so I figured we would give it a whirl. Being the insider, I told Robin that we can be smart and park in Greektown and take the people mover to Cobo Hall to avoid the traffic. There was a line 100 people long just to get on the people mover, so much for the inside scoop.

Robin and I took a morning walk over the weekend when we caught a train at the end of our street moving cars around. I thought this was an interesting photo. This guy had just flipped the switch and had jumped on the back of this car.

I find it interesting to watch the workings of the railroad. It has been something I have paid little attention to in the past but now that we can hear it from our home it is fun to walk on down to the track and watch these guys work the tracks and trains.

The Detroit Auto Show this weekend seemed like a trip to the car lot, (without the presser of a salesman pressing down on me). The fun cars were the concept cars and the commercial cars.

The photograph that I am posting drew me to it because of the color. I said, "Dan, look a green car... we have got to go see it." So, we waded through the sea of people to get to the Hot Wheels car - a bright green Chevrolet Camero displayed on a scaled version of the orange Hot Wheels track.

This was shot from the people mover looking at the bus station in downtown Detroit. Of everything we saw at the car show, nothing was as exciting as the design of this public structure. Trying to get a shot of it from the people mover while it was packed with people was not easy.

While it could have been in focus more, I was happy with the composition. There is nothing sadder than a missed shot because of technical ineptness. When I look at the settings on the camera - I can see what I did wrong. I was so taken in by the scene that I had my f-stop too high and my shutter speed too slow. That is a ridiculous mistake after a year of shooting photos.

Yesterday we had a lot of snow. This morning everyone in the neighborhood was out shoveling and snow blowing - so where was I? I was out taking photographs!
