Hi folks — Chesapeake Woodturners monthly meeting for December will be this coming Saturday, December 18, at 12:30. Our website calendar says 12:00 noon, so if you want to come early, that’s fine.

This is our last meeting of 2010 — this means dues for the coming year are welcome! Pay by cash or check to Chesapeake Woodturners.

We do not have a special program this month, and we didn’t set a monthly challenge, so we will have plenty of time for extensive show-and-tell, and we could also have some time for members to bring in items

of tooling, materials, etc. that they might want to swap or sell or just give away. I have some extra tools I’ll bring in, and most of us have excess hunks of wood. If any of you have items you’d like to advertise a bit before the meeting, let me know ASAP and I’ll get out a notice. I have a 4″ jointer and a 9″ radial arm saw I’d like to unload — let me know if you’re interested.

Lou Rudinski will give an update on turners he has contacted for possible workshops and demonstraitons in the coming year. Let him know if you have any favorites you’d like to see him try to bring in.

We will discuss several matters coming up: the Woodworking Show at Timonium (Jan 7-8-9) and our demonstraitons there, and the upcoming shows at Montpelier (with demos) and Maryland Federation Circle Gallery.

We can also raffle off the Jimmy Clewes Oriental box which we didn’t get around to last month — see photo. Jimmy signed this for us and it would be a fine addition to anyone’s collection.

New Website Feature – Chesapeake Woodturners Forum

This weekend I add a new community to our website. Follow the Forum link from the main page to the new Chesapeake Woodturners Forum. A community for members to exchange ideas, display their projects, provide guidance and counsel new woodturners.

This a members only forum so you must register to post to the forum. Non-members can view posts but can not reply or start new threads.

I’ve started us off with six forums:

General discussion
Tips, Tricks and How-Tos
Shops, Jigs, Fixtures and Tools
Product Testing and Reviews
Member’s Gallery
Beginner’s Corner

If you have an idea for another forum or two let me know and I will add them. This is the first Forum I’ve administered so it will be an adventure. At the moment none of the forums are moderated but we may change that later depending on volumes.

This is our community let’s make it a great place to communicate and collaborate.

2010 Design in Wood Exhibition – Call for Entries

Design in Wood Exhibition is co-sponsored by the San Diego Fine Woodworkers Association and the San Diego County Fair. Design in Wood is the largest juried woodworking exhibition of its type anywhere. The exhibition is open to all interested adult woodworkers.

There are three classes for woodturners:

Class 14 Wood Turning – Center Work: Parallel to the ways of the lathe
Class 15 Wood Turning – Embellished/Mixed Media
Class 16 Wood Turning Laminated/Segmented

An entry form can be downloaded from http://tinyurl.com/yzmb3cu

Online registration starts in mid-March 2010 and all entries must be submitted by 5pm Friday April 30, 2010 Pacific Time. Submissio is by digial photographs with your entry submission.

I looked at the 2009 winners and I think we can more than hold our own the the folks from the left coast. A photo gallery of last year’s results can be seen at tinyurl.com/yzvwaqb

Timonium Woodworking Show – First Day

First day at Timonium Show – great crew setting up. Thanks to all that braved the cold and the early morning snow.

Our first large booth show is off to a great start. Good crowds early and Ted’s Peppermill Main Stage demonstrations were great.

Pen Turned with African Blackwood

Over the weekend I turned a pen from some of the African Blackwood we bought on the club group buy recently. The wood turned well, and the color varies from black to almost a chocolate brown depending on the light.

Should have spent a bit more time sanding and polishing. Under strong sunlight I can see small scratches in the wood – not happy with that but its on me
