At the start, each player ("White" and "Black") controls sixteen &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_piece" title="Chess piece" target="_blank"&gt;pieces&lt;/a&gt;: one &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_%28chess%29" title="King (chess)" target="_blank"&gt;king&lt;/a&gt;, one &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_%28chess%29" title="Queen (chess)" target="_blank"&gt;queen&lt;/a&gt;, two &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rook_%28chess%29" title="Rook (chess)" target="_blank"&gt;rooks&lt;/a&gt;, two &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knight_%28chess%29" title="Knight (chess)" target="_blank"&gt;knights&lt;/a&gt;, two &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bishop_%28chess%29" title="Bishop (chess)" target="_blank"&gt;bishops&lt;/a&gt;, and eight &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pawn_%28chess%29" title="Pawn (chess)" target="_blank"&gt;pawns&lt;/a&gt;.
