8th International Lyon Trophy

The 8th International Lyon Trophy was held on 26-30th December 2013 at 3 rue de l'Angile 69005 Lyon, France.

The tournament was played over nine rounds of Swiss system with 81 participants. The total prize fund was 4000 EUR.

The tournament was organizer by the Lyon Olympique Echecs and chief arbiter was Gerard Hernandez.

Krishnan Sasikiran is Champion of India

Grandmaster Krishnan Sasikiran became the new Champion of India after winning the Bhavarlal and Kantabai Jain 51st National Premier Chess Championship that was held on 17-30th December in Jalgoan.
Sasikiran concluded the tournament in style, by defeating IM Shyam Nikil for the total score of 10,5/13 points.
Sasikiran’s nearest followers GM Adhiban and GM Lalith Babu were also victorious in the last round to finish the event with 10,0 and 9,5 points respectively.

The Championship was organized by the Jalgoan District Chess Association & Jain Sports Academy. The playing format returned to the round robin with 14 players.

Chess Festival Groningen 2013

Wednesday, 01 January 2014 11:19 The 51st Groningen Chess Festival was held from 21st to 30th December at the Sport Centre Rijksuniversiteit & Hanzehogeschool in Groningen, Netherlands.

The highlight of the festival was the exhibition match between Anatoly Karpov and Jan Timman. The
12th World Champion won the match by 2,5-1,5.

University of Groningen Chess Challenge was a match between former European Champion GM Jan Werle and the reigning Dutch Youth Champion (U21) Nick Maatman.

The main Open A for players rated above 2000 had 103 participants. GM Andriasian Zaven ARM 2610, GM L'Ami Erwin NED 2645, IM Bok Benjamin NED 2540 and GM Ernst Sipke NED 2566 shared the first place with 7 points each.

Groningen Chess Festival

12/31/2013 – The Groningen Chess Festival has concluded. Attractions included several amateur tournaments, many scholastic events, simultaneous exhibitions and book signings. However the two obvious main events were the Open section and the rematch between Karpov and Timman, replaying the FIDE World Championship of 1993 in which the Russian convincingly won. See Karpov's repeat.

The Groningen Chess Festival took place from December 21st to December 30th. Many events took place, including scholastic events, amateur tournaments and even puzzle solving competitions. However the main attractions were surely the Open tournament and the match between to legendary chess players: Anatoly Karpov and Jan Timman.

The match was held in the Groningen Museum of Art and it was played to four games. The first three games were relatively uneventful draws. However, in the night before the fourth game, Timman suffered quite an accident! He fell and broke his hand, which had him most of the morning before his fourth round in the hospital. Incredibly he decided to play regardless, but Karpov proved to be too much for him during the last round

Karpov and Timman played a World Championship match in 1993, which Karpov won convincingly 12.5-8.5 However this match was overshadows by what many consider to be the actual World Championship match of that year, the PCA's Kasparov vs. Short.

Open Section

The open section brought many grandmasters from all over the World. The tournament ended in a four way tie between Erwin L'Ami, Zaven Andriasian, Benjamin Bok and Sipke Ernst.

Al Ain Open won by Abhijeet Gupta

12/31/2013 – In parallel to the World Youth Championship in Al Ain, U.A.E, two swiss opens were held. One for players rated 2000 FIDE or less, and one open to all. The top Open attracted dozens of grandmasters, the strongest being Georgian GM Baadur Jobava who was the only 2700 player. Jobava led until the end, when he fell ill and defaulted the last round. Abhijeet Gupta took first. Report and games.

The top rated player not only was in form, but was destroying the field up until round seven of nine, when he fell ill. He then lost in round eight, and despite still being one of the leaders, failed to show up entirely in round nine, losing by default. As a result he finished in tenth.

The tournament was won by Indian GM Abhijeet Gupta, tied with two others at 7.0/9, and who ironically was the beneficiary of the last round default by Jobava. In second was Vasif Durarbayli from Azerbaijan and in third was Ukrainian GM Martyn Kravtsiv.

COMMISSION for WOMEN’S CHESS 33rd INTERNET BASED FIDE ARBITERS’ SEMINAR

Working trip to UAE, Abu Dhabi

FIDE President had a working trip to the UAE and held a meeting with Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Community Development which was held in Abu Dhabi. The Parties discussed issues of mutual cooperation and noted that chess is now more promoted in the UAE. This is why it was decided to open a regional FIDE office in the Chess Palace in Sharjah and this

decision was supported by the leader of the emirate. The traditional Dubai Open tournaments has now become the most important chess event in the country. However a special place in history has been taken by the World Youth Chess Championships 2013 in Al Ain, which gathered together a record number of participants - 1800 chess players from more than 100 countries of the world. Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan with great delight accepted an invitation from Kirsan Ilyumzhinov to visit the closing ceremony of the event.

GM Wojtaszek wins Zurich Christmas Open

The 37th Zurich Christmas Open took place on 26-30th December at the Crowne Plaza Zürich in Zurich, Switzerland.

The 7-round Master Tournament, for players rated over 2000, had 118 participants. Polish Grandmaster Radoslaw Wojtaszek took a clear first place with 6,0/7 points to claim the top prize of CHF 5000.

Wojtaszek signed an important last-round win against GM Ivan Popov, while the overnight co-leader Igor Kovalenko could not achieve more than a draw and remained on the shared 2nd place.

The General Tournament (U2050) with 229 participants was also held over 7 rounds of Swiss system. Martin Schweighoffer of Uster emerged sole winner with 6,5/7 points to take the top prize of CHF 1000.

The total prize money of both tournaments exceeded CHF 30,000.

The next tournament in Switzerland is Hilton Basel Chess Festival which is starting on 1st January 2014 in Basel.

Paul Keres Memorial Festival in Tallinn

From January 3 to January 16, the Estonian Chess Federation will hold a Paul Keres Memorial Chess Festival in Tallinn. Paul Keres was elected the Estonian Sportsman of the 20th century.

The international tournament of the Paul Keres Memorial Festival will take place from January 10 to January 16, 2014. It will be a 9-round Swiss system event with the prize fund of 10 000 euros. BhavarlalKhantabai Jain Multipurpose Foundation 51st National Indian Premier Chess Championship

All the seven games in action

A rest day after the sixth round had changed the entire status of theBhavarlalKhantabai Jain Multipurpose Foundation 51st Indian Premier Chess Championship, being held at Jain Hills, Jalgoan.

With both co leaders GM Sasikiran Krishnan and GM LalithBabu(both from Petroleum Sports Board) losing one game each in either eighth or ninth round, things turned topsyturvy. At the end of the ninth round.LalithBabu snatched the lead with 7.5 points. Sasikiran is trailing by half a point and former under 16 world champion B Adhibanof PSPB hangs on to third place with 6.5 points.

In the eighth round, IM AkshatKamparia of Railways stunned LalithBabu and the spectators by sacrificing his pieces at will, including his queen. In the Bogo Indian defence by Lalith, Akshat’s queen sacrifice was unexpected, but Lalith accepted it, not visualising the moves turning up later. Akshat offered a knight sacrifice, which was also accepted by his opponent. Only when Akshat came forward to donate his bishop, Lalith realised the danger of getting checkmated and resigned. Third placedAdhiban was also shocked by IM AshwinJayaram of Tamil Nadu, making matters complicated.

Loss by LalithBabu helped Sasikiran to emerge leader, after eight rounds, as he drew with his game against DeepanChakravarthy of Tamil Nadu. But, in the ninth round, more surprises showered in, when Adhiban defeated Sasikiran in 37 moves. Sasikiran’s rook exchange for a bishop on the 15th move did not bear any fruitful result. Top seeded ParimarjanNegi of PSPB suffered another loss at the hands of GM Vishnu Prasanna of Tamil Nadu, in the ninth round.LalithBabu earned a full point by beating AswinJayaram to wrest the lead. With four more rounds remaining, the tournament is interestingly poised for a good finish.

Dr Adrian Siegel joins Kirsan Ilyumzhinov’s ticket

FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov is delighted to announce that Professor Dr. Adrian Siegel, the President of the Swiss Chess Federation, has accepted his invitation to be Treasurer on his ticket in the forthcoming FIDE elections.
Ilyumzhinov is honoured that one of the most important European chess federations is willing to work together with him for the future of chess.

After holding and co-sponsoring a number of World Championship qualifying events with top-class players around the Europe, Ilyumzhinov is clearly gaining support among the European chess federations and is looking to improve the result from the previous election in 2010.
Switzerland hosted the FIDE Grand-Prix events in Geneve and Zug. FIDE also has an active office in Lausanne, in the House of International Sport (la Maison du Sport International).
It is a natural development that an active federation and FIDE are strengthening the ties by proposing the election of a respected chess personality.

Carlsen – the nettlesome World Champion

12/29/2013 – "Carlsen won because he is the better athlete and not the better chess player," wrote a commentator after the Chennai match. In drawn positions the Norwegian plays on and on, sitting his opponent out, waiting for errors. That is profoundly misleading: Magnus Carlsen's success lies in his ability to play "consistently accurate moves that also maximise the chances of inaccuracies from the opponent," writes GM Jonathan Rowson.

The nettlesome World Champion

'Nettlesomeness' is my candidate for 2013 word of the year.
There is a lot to be said for being stung by a nettle. The experience may not be entirely pleasant, but it brings your attention back to your body, renews your respect for nature, and encourages you to be more vigilant for the greater dangers that lie ahead. Indeed, sometimes you need to 'grasp the nettle' to get anywhere at all.
Nonetheless, nettles are a pain, literally and figuratively, and 'nettlesome' aptly captures the quality of something bothersome that prevents us from feeling at ease.
Our new World Champion, Magnus Carlsen, is obviously the player of 2013, but we needed the word ‘nettlesomeness’ to capture the quintessence of his strength, which lies in his capacity to induce errors by relentlessly playing moves that are not only good, but bothersome.
American Computer Scientist Ken Regan coined the term after a close examination of patterns of mistakes in the games of elite players, including an instructive comparison with former world champion Vladimir Kramnik, who is apparently as accurate as Carlsen, but is not as good at subtly discombobulating his opponents.

To be clear, Carlsen’s nettlesomeness lies in the difference between playing consistently accurate moves, and playing consistently accurate moves that also maximise the chances of inaccuracies from the opponent. The former style beats all but the very best Grandmasters, while the latter tends to beat them too.
I haven't checked the data, and I am sure a cross-examination would yield some nettlesome questions, but for me it's not about the methodology. As somebody who has played Carlsen and watched his games for several years, the conclusion rings true. Being a great chess player is as much about sucking the greatness out of your opponents as it is about demonstrating greatness of your own.

So how does one's play acquire this quality of nettlesomeness? Some of Carlsen’s personal qualities – his confidence and composure – can be attributed to years of invaluable emotional, financial, educational and logistical support from a dedicated family, but his games in 2013 point towards the following range of chess qualities which coalesce to deadly effect:

First, avoid errors yourself.
Second, play relatively quickly.
Third, see complexity where others assume simplicity.
Fourth, develop exquisite timing for when to change the nature of the position.
Fifth, navigate towards positions where there are no obvious moves.
Sixth, believe in your opponent's greater and ultimate fallibility.
Seven, keep going relentlessly.
Eight, be ever ready to pounce.
Nine, kill them without mercy.
Ten, smile for the cameras.

Carlsen is not the only player whose moves have a high nettlesomeness score relative to strength, and England’s Luke McShane for instance, comes to mind as a player with the practical acumen required to be thoroughly nettlesome for elite Grandmasters. However, it is Carlsen’s unique combination of managing to squeeze out the few mistakes waiting to be made by such opponents while also making very few mistakes himself that makes him the best in the world.
The following is my game of the year [from the Tal Memorial 2013], not for quality, but for being a microcosm of the changing of the guard we witnessed in November, where Magnus made a great Champion look helpless. I would signal out moves 8, 12, 16, 17 as ‘nettlesome’, but 25.Bh3! was the real sting.

Yesterday the 2013 World Youth concluded in Al Ain, in the U.A.E. with the participation of 1773 players from 171 federations. The Israeli delegation which took part in the event consisted of 5 players and several accompanying persons.

During the event there were several publications and petitions from several institutes and individuals about the fact that the flags of Israel were removed from the relevant tables in the tournament and from the official web as well and replaced by flags of FIDE. We would like to state very clearly that this move was done as a result of our security people's request and with full cooperation with the local organizers. While we believe that participation of Israeli players in events held in Arabic countries, and vice versa of course, with Israeli flags is very positive and contributing to a good atmosphere, we all realize that such events need security solutions and strict cooperation about.

We cordially appreciate all those who were standing on our rights in what looked like a breach of it but we stress again - this was not a decision or initiative of the U.A.E. authorities but ours and we would like to thank the organizers and FIDE events commission for their cooperation and for the excellent treatment our delegation was met.

World Youth Chess Championship 2013: closing ceremony

Closing Ceremony of the WYCC 2013 was held in the UAE after the last round. Medal winners in classic and blitz sections in all 12 categories recieved their medals from Sheikh Nehyan and FIDE President Kirsan Illyumzhinov.

The 2013 World Youth Chess Championships were held on 17-29th December in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates.

The event was organized by the UAE Chess Federation and Al Ain Chess Club, under the auspices of FIDE. A total of 1773 players from 121 countries competed.

India and China and boasting three gold medals each, but the Indian players also bagged two silver and three bronze medals.

Russia has 1 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronzes, while representatives of Iran have won one of each medals. United States claimed gold and silver in U10 boys section.

Among the other countries, Canada, Armenia and Greece have one gold medal each.

Spanish players have won two silver medals, while Serbia, Mongolia, Turkey, Uzbekistan and Belarus have one silver each.

Azerbaijan takes two bronze medals home. Also with bronze medals, one for each country, are Poland, Bulgaria and Turkmenistan.

Fahad wins silver medal in Blitz Chess

The youngest FIDE master ended up fifth in the main contest of the same age category.

Fahad beat Mongolia’s Sugar Ganerdene in the last round held at Al Ain city on Saturday.

Fahad emerged fifth from the nearly 200 contestants by scoring 8.5 points in 11 matches.

The US’s Awondar Liang ended up first with 10 points.
After winning three consecutive matches, Fahad lost the fourth.

He lagged behind after a draw in the eighth and ninth rounds, but ended the contest with two victories.

1,773 contestants (8-18 age group) from 121 countries joined the contests.

India topped the list with three gold medals, two silver and three bronze medals.

Fahad also took part in the Blitz Chess in his age category on the sidelines of the main competition.

Five rounds of the contest were held on Tuesday.

By winning the last two rounds on Saturday, the lone representative of Bangladesh won a silver medal, having scored 6.5 points with six wins and a draw.

India has also topped the list in this contest by winning five gold medals.

At first four chess players from Bangladesh were set to take part in the competition.

But Fahad was the only one to make it, as the Bangladesh Chess Federation, suffering from financial constraints, could not send other contestants.

More than 80 chess players joined the contest from neighbouring India.

Fahad was recognised as the youngest FIDE Master at the age of 10.

The grade IV student is also the current national sub-junior champion.

You will also be shown some tips on how to present just parts of games, combinations, studies, and more.

studies, and more.

Publishing several games with a drop-down menu

Open a base where the games are saved, and highlight the ones you want to
publish. Just click on them with your mouse, while holding the Ctrl key pressed.

The right-click on one and select Output and then Publish to Web

A pop-up will appear. If you want to quickly publish them and just give a link,
select One Click Publication and provide the link (as here). Otherwise select
Create a HTML file.

Just as with one game, open the HTML file in an HTML editor, your browser (right-click
and select "View page source") or even Notepad. The HTML code you want to copy to
include in your page is located between <body> and </body>. Copy it and then paste
it where you would like the replayer and game to appear.

Advanced tips

Sometimes what you really want is to just show a key moment of a game, or just a combination. What is the best way?

Publishing part of a game

For a game excerpt, the trick is simply to remove the moves before or after, and this is incredibly easy with ChessBase 12.

In the game, go to the key move where it all starts or all ends. Right-click on
the move, select Delete, and then Delete Previous Moves or Delete Remaining
Moves. If you remember the keyboard shortcuts [ and ] it is very quickly done.
After that, follow the same procedure as above to publish a game.

Combinations, studies, and problems

Suppose however, you want to present a combination or a study, and don't want to spoil it by showing the solution immediately? The answer is: publish the pure diagram with the caption, and keep the solutions seperate, or at the bottom using the replayer. Here is a sample idea:

Set up the position or go to the point in the game you want to save as a diagram.
Then go to File (top left), Save, and Save position. Be warned the diagram will
correspond to the board size.

If you want to save a smaller diagram, you need to shrink the board before saving

First post the diagram such as here, with the caption. White

If you read the previous parts, you understood how that linked solution was done.

Indeed, just select File, then Publish on Web, and when the pop-up appears,
choose One Click Publication. The page will open and the URL is your solution.

"Boringly Safe" in Kurdistani Iraq! Part 2

12/28/2013 – In part one of her report to Kurdistani Iraq, Alina l'Ami gave us a beautiful impression of the city of Erbil, a thriving zone full of kind people. In this second and final half she focuses on the events surrounding the tournament itself, which was eventually won by Dutch GM Sergey Tiviakov, while of course bringing us a big pictorial report of a high publicized event.

I am a bit worried that things might change in the future though. Kurdistan is experiencing an
amazing economical and cultural boom, greatly due to petrol. To get a picture, one litre of gasoline costs... 35 Euro cents! Anyway, new buildings, (hotels, shops, malls, universities) are popping up continuously like mushrooms after rain. The place is likely to become an economical paradise and this would probably awake the interest of visitors with... let’s call it “less honourable intentions”.
And yet, I am full of hope that this kind of adventurers will be rapidly assimilated by the kindness and generosity reigning all over the streets. More likely, the Romanian proverb according to which one rotten apple is enough to ruin the whole basket would not apply here; on the contrary, the universal language of well-doing should prevail.
This brings us to another amazing theme: the character of the people. The warmth of the locals made me feel like as if stepping into one of the most beautiful of the 1001 night tales...
As a relatively ‘experienced’ photographer, I have noticed that in many places people display certain reluctance to being “immortalized” by my camera. Much to my relief, this was not the case in Kurdistan. There were many ways in which people showed themselves happy to be photographed by me or... together with me! They would reward my camera’s insatiable curiosity with smiles, hand-waving, or even…a cup of tea!
And if I took a picture of someone, people around were not shy to express their dissatisfaction or even offence, that they are left outside the view angle! Most probably, these feelings are only pretended, in the spirit of some sort of local humour, but since I couldn’t be sure and it didn’t cost me money anyway, I gladly photographed them, too, just to be greeted with the broadest smiles...
Indeed, smiles all over... This is a common pattern in my photos from this article. And as you can notice, smiling is contagious: jut have a look at this bunch of participants to the chess festival!
And there were good reasons for the players’ smiles. Although most of the organizers had their normal jobs, they wouldn’t spare any effort or minute to make us live like in a dream. Hotel, food, playing conditions, closing ceremony were all at the five star level. But this was only part of the story. I more than once felt that we were spoiled not only by the local authorities but also by the whole local population, as a perfect prove that – “Gens Una Sumus”. My biggest thanks to the organizers (Central Union of Chess of Kurdistan, Khanzad Chess Club and Capablanka Institute) for this memorable experience!

The tournament officially started! So many high officials attended the event...but more remarkable than just their one time visit, which could be considered a rather forced even by many, they met with us serveral times! During the tournament, in their offices or even in less formal atmosphere, for lunch or dinner!

No big chess event would be complete without a simul

All over we were told: Erbil is your home, enjoy, please do ask for anything you need, you are one of us. This gave me the clear feeling that chess made us all, hosts and visitors, a big happy family! (I have never had so many group shots in any tournament so far:)
Such an ambitious statement surely requires some concrete examples, but let me assure you that I am not short of them.
One of the players missed the official bus and found himself on his own looking for a way to get to the game. A complete stranger passing by noticed there was some problem and literally took him by the hand to the playing hall.

I had a similar experience together with Johan Zwanepol, the oldest participant in the tournament and renowned organizer from Groningen, while looking for a way of reaching the bazaar. We decided to be one with the place and took the…public transportation. We happened to run into my first round opponent, who instantly became our personal (and rather skilled) guide! Not before smiling and joking a lot and...inviting us to a cup of tea, of course!
And if we spoke about local opponents... one of them felt obliged to apologize immediately after blundering, feeling sorry about having spoiled the game! I took this as a highly unusual mixture of love for chess, gentlemen behaviour and kindness.
But the top of it came only during the last round. Before the closing ceremony I suddenly felt sorry that I didn’t have any traditional Kurdish cloths at my disposal... How could I have been so careless as not to have got some during the tournament? It would have been such a nice way to show my thankfulness for the organizers and the whole country...

The Ukrainian GM, Konstantin Tarlev, is always in good mood! I think it is impossible for anyone to be sad or angry around him:) And once again, my full respect for his courage to venture all the way into Baghdad...I wouldn't dare, not in the near future anyway.

I was “saved” by a miracle. A completely unknown woman, who didn’t speak any bit of English, understood the situation from my gestures. Despite the linguistic barrier, we understood each other perfectly. She promised to bring me some clothing after the round... And here I am!

As a final thought...I felt that all the participants emerged as true winners. And I don’t refer to returning alive from Iraq; it wouldn’t be consequent after explaining how safe the place was. What I meant is that we all had a fantastic experience, made possible by breaking the barrier of preconceived opinions and venturing to dream that the 1001 Nights atmosphere may come true...
Will you ‘dare’ to take the challenge and participate in the 3rd Kurdistan Chess Festival next year?! I am already on the list!
