Elementary Report Cards: Available on Parent Portal on June 3

Parents can find their child’s final report card for the school year online via Infinite Campus. In previous years, elementary report cards were either given to the student to take home on the last day or mailed in the summer to families after teachers had completed grading. New this year, parents can view report cards for students in grades K-5 online. A printed report card will no longer be mailed to homes.

Where can I find the report card?
Parents can logon to the Parent Portal on Infinite Campus and find their child’s report card.

When will the final report card be published?
Students’ report cards will be published on the Parent Portal on Monday, June 3. Parents are able to access this report card information until noon on Tuesday, June 12. If parents would like a printed copy of their child’s report card, please download it from Infinite Campus during this time.

If I have questions, whom should I contact?
Please contact your elementary school office if you have questions.

Chesterfield Celebrates at the Zoo

In celebration of earning the National School of Character Award, students at Chesterfield Elementary were surprised with a field trip to the St. Louis Zoo on Tuesday, May 21.

The entire school participated in the event – from students and teachers to custodians, secretaries and more. “Our school community worked hard to become a National School of Character and this trip was a wonderful way to celebrate together,” said Principal Dr. Meg Brooks.

Students erupted in cheers and excitement when they were surprised with the news that they were spending the day at the zoo. The field trip made for a fun day for students and staff alike, and it was a great reward for earning the National School of Character Award.

Congratulations Track and Field Athletes!

Congratulations to 1,300+ student athletes who participated in the district-wide elementary and middle school track and field meets held during the month of May. The track and field meets are just one of several district-wide athletic events that take place for students each year. Thanks to all the Physical Education teachers who committed their time to preparing students for the events.

Community Ed’s Track and Field Instructional Program is for athletes of all ability levels and introduces kids to the fun of of the sport. Led by trained coaches, athletes practice twice per week and participate in two intra-squad meets. The program is being offered at Lafayette and Rockwood Summit High Schools and runs June 3-July 20. OASIS breakfast

On May 8th, Chesterfield Elementary was host to Oasis tutors and the children they have seen this year, serving up a tasty continental breakfast. The children loved the fruit kabobs and the tutors loved the time with “their children”.

Oasis tutors are active, sometimes retired adults who wish to make a meaningful contribution to their community. They are part of OASIS, a national not-for-profit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of mature adults. The program is sponsored by Macy’s.

Once a week the tutors spend thirty to forty five minutes reading and talking with a child they’ve been connected to through referrals from classroom teachers. Mutual friendships are built throughout the year. Children look forward to the extra attention and the tutors look forward to the quality time they can spend with a child.

Chesterfield has nine tutors currently serving ten children. Next year we hope to have even more volunteers so we can include more children in this program.

Students Decorate Snow Plow

In recognition of National Public Works Week, May 19-25, students at Chesterfield Elementary are working together to decorate snow plows for the City of Chesterfield. The city’s public works department cleaned, sanded and prepped the plows prior to delivery.

During the week of May 19, students will enjoy a “plow parade” and will have the opportunity to see other equipment from the City of Chesterfield. Art Teacher Julie Glossenger said the painted snow plow is one of several community outreach projects students have participated in this year. “Opportunities such as this allow students to see what it’s like to be a professional artist,” said Glossenger. “It’s exciting for students to use their skills to make a positive difference in their own neighborhood.”

Fifth-grade student Sara Morgenthaler said she thinks the project is unique. “It’s different to paint on a snow plow; now it feels more like a sculpture.” She went on to add, “I like the design and how to reminds me of windows like you see in a church, like stained glass.”

In addition to Chesterfield, Wild Horse Elementary and two elementary schools in the Parkway School District are participating in this project.

To celebrate National Nutrition Week, Brian Wieher, manager of the Chesterfield Elementary cafeteria, and his staff donated a copy of a book in the popular series called "Lunch Lady" to the Chesterfield Library. The presentation was made on May 9 during the morning announcements that are broadcast throughout the school each day.

Chesterfield Elementary Featured in Tremont Newsletter

Since 2009, Rockwood students have been exploring the outdoors during visits to the Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont. During these adventures, students hike and develop science skills while exploring the mountain ecosystem.

Science Fair Project Earns First Prize

Students in Rebecca Cohen’s third-grade class won first prize in the Youth Science Fair Competition for students ages 9-11. The event was organized through the City of Chesterfield and was held in conjunction with the city’s Earth Day Festival on April 27.

For their project, “The Ultimate Utensil Project,” students worked together to analyze the strength of compostable forks and spoons to that of plastic forks and spoons. Cohen, along with Jeanne Tevlin, a teacher’s assistant from Special School District, helped students form a testable question, write a hypothesis, list the procedure, identify the dependent and independent variables, collect and analyze data, and form a conclusion.

Cohen said she was impressed with her students’ work. “They were able to apply their scientific process skills to a real world problem and share what they learned with the community,” said Cohen. “I am really proud of how my students synergized to create a well-organized and thoughtful display of their hard work. DESE Parent Survey: Services for Special Education

The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) is gathering information from parents who have a child(ren) who receives special education services.

Below is a link to a copy of the survey with two options for submission: online or mail. This survey is confidential; individual responses are not shared with the school district or anyone else.

All surveys should be completed by May 10, 2013.

Character Education Celebration

During a special ceremony on April 1, Chesterfield Elementary was honored for receiving the Missouri School of Character Distinction. This is the second time in five years for the school to earn state recognition.

Students, staff, district officials, parents and members of Characterplus attended the ceremony. In celebration of this distinction, Chesterfield was presented with a banner, which it will proudly display in the school.

Principal Dr. Meg Brooks commended students and staff for their hard work and leadership. “Chesterfield is a caring school community and it’s exciting to once again receive recognition as a state model for school climate,” said Dr. Brooks. “This award is a reflection of our ongoing commitment to character education.”

Chesterfield was the first Rockwood school to be named both a Missouri School of Character in 2005 and a National School of Character in 2008. Schools must reapply for state titles every three years and national titles every five years.

Currently, Chesterfield is undergoing a rigorous national evaluation process for the National School of Character Distinction. News of this award will be announced in May.

Prop S: What Does It Mean For Our School?

On Tuesday, April 2, Rockwood residents will be asked to vote on Prop S, a $38.4 million no-tax rate increase bond issue.

The proposed bond issue supports students by focusing on safety measures, technology improvements and updates to our current facilities.

· Safety: Provide for safety modifications, such as security cameras, door-locking systems and check-in centers at school entrances.

· Technology: Update computers and networks so students are prepared for upcoming state-mandated online assessments.

· School Improvements: Repair and renovate existing schools to maintain the district’s investment in facilities and buildings.

This referendum would not require an increase to the district’s current debt service tax rate. A four-sevenths (57.14 percent) majority is necessary for passage. Election Day is April 2. Please remember to vote.
