Amazon.com is once again slashing prices on select HD DVD and Blu-ray discs. This week you will find a selection of 22 HD DVD and 23 Blu-Ray titles, all priced around $15. The sale is expected to last around a week. Titles may fall off the list as inventory is depleted.

Amazon also has the BBC mini-series Planet Earth on sale.

They have several titles at $24.99 (The Big Lebowski, Backdraft, Shawn of the Dead, Serenity, Mummy, Bourne Identity, Bourne Supremacy) and $29.99 (Transformers, Hod Rod, Knocked Up, Shrek The Third, Shooter, Smokin' Aces, Disturbia). Sale ends 7/2/2008.

The Best Buy Weekly ad also states that the 5 Free Blu-Ray discs by mail offer ends 1/31 so if you are looking to get that deal, you better hurry.

Circuit City Clearancing HD-DVD Players?

I have been reading numerous reports the last few days that Circuit City has HD-DVD players marked as clearance with the HD-A3 at $100 and the higher-end HD-A30 for $150. That's a $50 savings on each player. The website is not showing this price. Could they be clearing out inventory in select stores? I don't know, but if you are in the market for a HD-DVD player you might want to check it out.

Retailers hoping to fulfill the needs of consumers who got new Blu-Ray and HD-DVD players for Christmas are offering a smorgasbord of deal this week.

Best Buy is offering up to a $25 gift card with the purchase of multiple Blu-Ray discs.
Circuit City has Buy 2 get 1 free for select Blu-Ray discs and $10 off two eligible HD DVD titles.
Amazon.com has several offers this week. First is Save up to 53% on Blu-Ray Top Drama Hits where they have 23 drama titles for about $15.99 each. Next is Save up to 53% on HD-DVD Top Drama Hits where they have 24 HD DVD titles for around $15.99. Lastly Amazon has the Feed Your Blu-ray Player: Up to 50% Off Blu-ray Discs sale with 51 titles mostly for $19.99 including several Disney movies.

With so many deals I am having trouble picking out a title or two to add to my collection. What are you planning on picking up?

Warner Going Blu-Ray After May

Warner Brother's has announced that after May 2008. This is a major blow to the HD-DVD camp as now around 70% of all studios have sided with Blu-Ray. The HD DVD Consortium has cancelled it's CES Press Conference. A lot of people saw this coming and really isn't a big surprise. Sony worked hard to get BD 1.1 into the PlayStation 3 before years and and I am sure they payed a sizable amount to Warner to get the exclusive. It will be interesting to see what happens next. I bet more defections are bound to happen. Microsoft is rumored to have a big HD DVD announcement at CES tomorrow during Bill Gates Keynote address. I wonder if they are scrambling to change their announcement in the light of Warner's decision. Only time will tell.

The last month has been a good time to be an early adopter. Both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray have had a number of great releases and there has been lots of deals. The BOGO offers are helping my collection grow. This week I am really looking forward to the release of Blade Runner. I watched the directors cut DVD last week and almost had to weep at the bad transfer and the stereo sound. I can't wait to watch it again with the new version in true HD and with surround sound.
