I stumbled upon an interesting post showing the hierarchy of programmers. Actually, it is the hierarchy of programmers as they themselves perceived to be. Note that the arrows indicate the perceived superiority. As for the top-bottom layout, I could not come to any conclusion any ranking level.

Source: Programmer Hierarchy …

I do agree that HTML is not a programming language. It is a markup language, or in my terms, a formatting script. This includes CSS as well. Any programming language should be able to at least support iteration and selection. None the less, this doesn’t mean that HTML and CSS are easy. Only less logical visualization involved.

And so “who” is the superior programmer? In my opinion, there is a suitable tool for every job and there is a suitable programming language for every task. A good programmer will be equipped with multiple tools with a sound judgment on the correct tool/tools to use for task at hand. Me? I am novice who begin to see that the more I learn, the less I know. Have fun programming!

And I hope it is working.

About URL Dot
A Firefox add-on to set customized prefix and list of suffixes to add to domain name for each key combination of Ctrl+Enter, Shit+Enter or Ctrl+Shit+Enter on the location bar. Would be useful for web developers using their own local server during website development. Example: www.domainName.com_localhost

Why was URL Dot created?
dotCOMplete is a great Firefox extension. But after Firefox version 3.5, it stop working due to incompatibility. I tried searching for a replacement but couldn’t find one as good as dotCOMplete. So I decided to make one myself. I hope I had succeeded.

URL Dot is still in experimental stage as reviews are required to nominate it into public state. So please download and test it and hopefully you can provide some feedback through reviews on the extension page.

According to the Firefox 3.5 page on Wikipedia, Firefox 3.5.1 was released July 16, 2009. A mere 16 days prior to that (Jun 30, 2009), Firefox 3.5 was released. I was hopeful that this new version would had fixed the tab tearing bug on version 3.5.

For those who are not familiar with the tab tearing bug (or maybe I’m using the wrong terms here), tab tear is actually a new feature introduced in Firefox 3.5. By holding the primary mouse button on a tab and dragging it away from the tab bar, the dragged away tab will be moved to a new Firefox window. This is actually a great feature. But the problem is that users will change tabs by clicking on the tab and Firefox sometimes translates this as a tab tearing attempt. So this bug is also know as a ‘sometimes open tabs in multiple Windows’ bug.

And so was the bug fixed? After using version 3.5.1 for more than a week, my own experience is the bug is still there. Just not that frequent. I don’t know if I’m the only one facing this problem. Maybe it is my trembling hand when clicking on a tab. Could also be cause by my wireless Microsoft mouse. Maybe even my mouse pad? But there’s always a solution. An extension to disable the tab detach and tear feature.

Yeah, I like to complain on the shortcomings of Firefox. It is because we are all suppose to already know the great features of Firefox. My conclusion, Firefox is still one of the greatest browsers available today. And it is provided free! So download it here:

When installing search plugins for my newly installed Firefox 3.5, I find that some icons for the search plugins are not as aesthetically pleasing as I would like. And so I decided to change the icons to my likings.

After a bit of searching, I found out that data for search plugin icons were saved in a search.json file in my Firefox profile folder. But the icons were not saved as physical .ico files, but were saved as a base-64 encoded string in the search.json file. Although it is possible make it point to a physical icon file, I prefer the neat and tidy way of using the base-64 encoded string. And so using AutoIt, I created a really simple program – Icon2Base64.

Since the program had been created, why not share it. Download Icon2Base64.zip and unzip using the password www.chewybyte.net. No installation required. Just make sure you open a 16×16 icon file (such as most favicons) and not one of those multiple format (dimension) icon files; you’ll get a very very long base-64 encoded string.

<!--

/* 468x60, created 8/29/08 */

(Source) And what is in it for us, the end-users?

Looking at the official product page, it seems that the major improvement (or ‘selling point’, but then it’s free isn’t?) would be the turbo-charged Javascript; 91% speed improvement over Firefox 2 and 58% speed improvement over Firefox 3. So not you know why I called it nitro-charged. Or is it really that fast or is it that it was just previously too slow. After all, Google Chrome, Safari, Opera and IE wasn’t in the race.

Another new feature worth noting would be the private browsing mode which is already available in a few other browsers. And then there’s also the so-called dynamic tab where tabs can be dragged out of the browser to create new windows as in Google Chrome. Visit the Firefox features page for a full list of new or improved features. And stay tuned as I’ll be adding to this article after a ‘full experience’ review…

UPDATE JULY 8 2009

It seems like this version is not really release-ready. There are some major bugs.

First one would be the ‘tab tear’ bug where clicking on a tab sometimes results in tearing the tab to a new Firefox window. Officially know as Bug 489729, there is even an extension made specifically to disable tab tearing.

The second major bug would be “crashing due to problems caused by the new TraceMonkey Javascript engine”. (Source: Mozilla Firebug? – lowyat.net)

After using this version for more than a week, I had unfortunately experienced both bugs with the ‘tab tear’ bug being more frequent and annoying as well. But other than that, it does seems to be a version with better features and performance. So let’s just hope and pray that a new less buggy version be released really really soon.

Continue on to part 2 (version 3.5.1).

For those who doesn’t know what a Nigerian scam is, do Google for more information. Anyone can be a potential victim. My previous boss got a Nigerian scam through fax!

Anyway, here’s the email I got. My first Nigerian scam email. (Or maybe the first one that manage to escape my spam filter.)

From : Central Bank Of Nigeria Plc
Subject : ***ATM CARD Notification***

Attn:Beneficiary,
Your Inheritance Payment of $10,000,000 ATM card is ready Contact
Central Bank with your details stated below so that your card can be sent to
your designated address:

Information is as follows:
1. Your full name
2. Phone and fax number
3. Address were you want them to send the ATM CARD
4. Your age and current occupation
5. Attach copy of your identification

Contact Email: atm.atm.card@live.com

Regards
John Apache

Now let’s see what is wrong with this email. Firstly, Central Bank of Nigeria Plc. The word Nigeria is enough to make me go into suspicious mode. I had never been to Nigeria. I do not know any Nigerian. Actually, I do not even know anyone who had been to Nigeria or anyone who knows any Nigerian. So what does Nigeria have to do with me?

Next, Attn:Beneficiary. Yo dude, we’re dealing with $10 million here and you don’t even know my name? You’re from Nigeria and $10 million is just pocket money to you?

Then there’s the email. Email sent from atmcard@atmworld.com and I am suppose to reply to atm.atm.card@live.com? live.com emails are free dude! $10 million is pocket money but your bank is so poor that they couldn’t even provide you with a proper email?

The hints in the email are so obvious that this scammer should had actually used a john.apache_not.nigerian.scam@live.com email. (Time saved from not Googling was used to write this article.)

For those who are not familiar with Windows Vista, Vista actually comes with a new mail manager application – Windows Mail. This mail manager does come with a lot of improvements over Outlook. However, one important feature is missing – minimize to tray.

I did a Google search for help and came up with one WinMailTray by Kristan Kenney. It did a very good job until I realised that it is actually more of a shortcut than a minimized tray icon. Even though the icon is in the tray, Windows Mail will not check for any new mails at every set interval. When Windows Mail is minimized, it is actually not running. And thus the reason why new mails will not automatically be retrieved even though WinMailTray is running.

So the solution, make one myself. Using AutoIt v3.2.12.1 on my Vista x64 rig. And the result is this:

Vista Mail Tray (64-bit) v0.0.0.7
(IMPORTANT! Read the following notes below.)

Vista Mail Tray (32-bit) v0.0.0.7
(IMPORTANT! Read the following notes below.)

How to use Vista Mail Tray:

Download the correct version (32 or 64 bit) for your system

The file doe NOT contain any virus/malware/whatever. But anyway, you can always scan the file at VirusTotal. Judge for yourself if those are real virus or just false alarms.

Extract the file to any folder on your Vista computer. (C:\Program Files\Vista Mail Tray\Vista Mail Tray.exe would be a good choice.)

If you want this utility to run every time Windows starts, create a Vista Mail Tray.exe shortcut in your Startup folder.

To use, left click on the Windows Mail icon in the system tray to start/show or minimize Windows Mail. Right click to view menu.

Have fun!
