Betty Ann Gulyas: Friendships define 20-year career with CHG

Body:

Betty Ann Gulyas, also known as “Queen Bee,” is an administrative assistant for our CompHealth permanent placement division in Trumbull, Conn. This month, she celebrates her 20-year anniversary with the company. She describes her experience with CHG as one filled with fond memories and irreplaceable friendships. Learn more about her in the Q&A below.

How has CHG changed since 1997? What has stayed the same?

Our databases, of course, have changed, making things easier for everyone to access information. And personally, I’ve added a few pounds and a few gray hairs! What has stayed the same is what we do and our core values — we still recruit medical professionals and help people in that way. People are still the most important part of our work.

What is your fondest work memory?

In March 2015, I was a recipient of the Putting People First award and won a four-day trip to Las Vegas for President’s Club. I took my daughter, and it was an absolute ball. It was so good to meet people from other offices who I had never met in person and put a face with their name.

What has kept you at CompHealth all these years?

I enjoy my friends, my job, and my commute to work is less than 10 minutes! Over the past two years, I have experienced some health problems, but without fail I have been supported by my friends, family and CHG family. I was able to take the time off I needed and knew I was never alone in my challenges.

Describe your CompHealth experience in three words.

Co-workers became friends.

Taking care of our own: CHG’s Employee Compassion Fund

Body:

Putting people first is at the heart of everything we do at CHG Healthcare. From corporate programs that provide assistance to employee-driven fundraisers, we take care of our people and support them when they need it most.

One of these programs is our Employee Compassion Fund.

Funded by employees, for employees, our compassion fund provides need-based grants to employees facing financial hardship. Thanks to employee donations and fundraising events like the Compassion Fund 5K, last year alone we were able to award 29 grants, totaling $40,000, to help team members who fell on hard times.

Helping a co-worker in need

When Jeff Coon, a sales manager with our CompHealth division, found himself dealing with the unimaginable — his wife’s cancer diagnosis — his team stepped in to provide support.

“Individuals at the company offered paid time off, they offered their vacation time, their time with their family for me to be with my family,” Jeff shares.

With cancer comes numerous trips to the hospital, doctor appointments and medications. The bills started to pile up. Jeff’s manager, Dustin Thomas, recommended applying for an Employee Compassion Fund grant to help ease some of the financial burden.

“I put my pride away and accepted the reality that I needed help,” Jeff says. “So, I applied for the Compassion Fund and was able to take the money from the grant and put it directly toward one of the bills that was due immediately, which was a huge relief for me.”

Paying it forward

Jeff’s experience made him realize the huge impact even the smallest kindness has on someone in need.

“I know I can’t pay back what they did for me, but I can pay it forward to other people and try to perpetuate the kindness that was offered to me,” Jeff shares. “The beautiful thing about the Compassion Fund is with the amount of employees that we have, if everyone gives a little, there’s a lot at the end and there’s a lot of opportunity to help at the end.”

Hear more about Jeff’s story in the video below.

Employee Spotlight: Helen Smith

Body:

Helen Smith is an assignment coordinator in our Foundation Medical Staffing office in Edmond, Oklahoma. She joined CHG Healthcare in 2015 and loves the people and the low-stress workplace environment the company offers.

“This has been a great move for me,” Helen shares. “I have learned that you can have fun at work and still be successful. I truly enjoy my job and the people I work with.”

Learn more about Helen, including what her spirit animal is, in the Q&A below.

How do you describe what you do for a living to your friends?

I tell them that we find jobs for dialysis nurses all over the U.S., and I get to help with the confirmations and contracts between the nurses and the hospital facilities.

What has been your most memorable moment at CHG so far?

Employee appreciation week. I have been in the workforce for… Well, let’s just say longer than I was in school. It amazes me how far a company will go to show its employees how much they appreciate the work and the effort that is put in to make sure they have a good week. Even the managers enjoy this week and still find a way to be productive as a team. Not that all weeks are not good, but it is nice to have that one week a year where it is all about the employees.

Which CHG core value means the most to you and why?

Putting people first. This means so much to me personally. I have worked in the past where the job was always first the goals had to be met. There was extreme pressure on meeting those goals every month. Here the goals are important and everyone works hard to get there. However, if there is something in the community that needs our attention as a team or if you have a personal need to be off work for the day to help family, you are not made to feel guilty to want to take that time. It is encouraged to take care of family first and that says a lot about our company.

What is your favorite benefit at CHG and why is it your favorite?

Wellness Pays. I think this is such a plus for a company to offer. I get to earn points to do things that I would normally do for myself and get a discount on my health benefits. Most of the health and wellness classes that CHG offers are helpful and I would go to them just to learn how to better my health. I need that extra push occasionally on weight management so this also helps keep me motivated and holds me accountable. Plus, it never hurts to save money.

If you were stranded on a desert island, what three things would you take with you?

My ideal place to be stranded would be a sandy white beach with nothing to worry about. I would have to bring with me plenty of water and a lighter — I am not much of a survivor and fresh water and fire to cook is a must. The third item would have to be my iPad with preloaded books and games because one would not be enough.

If you had a day to do anything at all, what would you do?

I would go to a beach in Florida and enjoy the white sand, ocean breeze and my family. That would be the best day every.

What’s an interesting fact about you?

I have a history of military solders in my family. My mom is retired Air Force and my dad spent time in the Navy. I spent some time in the Army and today my son is serving in the Army as an MP.

If you had to choose a famous actress to portray you in a movie, who would it be and why?

Sandra Bullock. She is one of my favorite actresses.

If you could choose a spirit animal, what would it be and why?

Eagle — I would love to be able to fly miles above and see what is ahead.

Paying it forward: A cycle of giving

Body:

At CHG, we pride ourselves on giving back to our people, providers, clients and communities. But sometimes, those we serve give back to us.

About five years ago, Igor Jauk, operations manager with our CompHealth division in Trumbull, Conn., began working with Dr. Begovic an anesthesiologist who was looking for a unique schedule as his teenage daughter was living in Croatia. The physician wanted to be able to take two to three months off at a time to be with her but did not want to work locum tenens assignments. Being Croatian himself and understanding the 10 hours of travel, Igor was eager to help out.

Providing flexibility and understanding

Igor reached out to his client in Chicago and was able to convince them to consider a non-traditional schedule. Dr. Begovic signed with the group and worked with them for two years, being able to travel back and forth between Chicago and Croatia to be with his daughter. Igor remained in contact with Dr. Begovic, and when the doctor wanted to work a more normal schedule, Igor was there to help again and find him a permanent position in Iowa, where he remains today.

Building a lasting relationship

Over the course of five years working together, the two formed a relationship. Still connecting even after a second placement, Igor shared with the anesthesiologist that his father, who lives in Croatia, was sick. Dr. Begovic immediately jumped into action. The tables were turned and he wanted to help.

Giving back

Dr. Begovic requested all of the medical records surrounding Igor’s father’s case to translate the medical terminology to English. To make sure his father was getting the best possible quality of care, Begovic suggested Igor get a second opinion. Igor was able to bring these translated documents to an American oncologist where they determined the best course of action. Without Dr. Begovic’s advice, Igor’s dad may not have received the care he needed.

The two still speak daily about Igor’s father, and Dr. Begovic continues to provide Igor with advice and offers assistance. Both Igor and this physician are a true example of why we do what we do at CHG.
