Hey all! So I've been on the search for the perfect pair of black boots for work, and I went a little spend-happy and bought a few pairs--thinking I'd see how I liked them and then send them back. I bought this pair from Gilt Groupe, LOVED them, and then quickly realized that I was living in a dream world if I thought I could walk in them. I'm TERRIBLE actually walking in heels, and with my metro commute, it's gotten even worse (I sprained my ankle in 2 1/2 inch heels the other day. No joke).

Alas, my loss (and lack of grace) can be your gain! I got a great deal on the boots--such a great deal that they're final sale and I can't return them, so I'm selling them on ebay. You can read all the details here, but rest assured that they're gorgeous in person--soft, buttery black leather with black suede trim right on the heel. They're really excellent--sexy, classic, and they go with EVERYTHING. Damn. I wish I weren't such a klutz.

Because I'm not! While I don't really buy all the hype surrounding New Year's Eve (NYE)--and absolutely refuse to watch that awful-looking movie--I do like the idea BEHIND all the hype. YourTango.com did an article on the history of the NYE kiss, where the author explained:

Generally, when it comes to jewelry, I'm all, "Go big or go home!" But lately I've been feeling some subtle, classic styles. Case in point? Initial and monogram necklaces! They feel like a nod to Carrie Bradshaw's "Carrie" nameplate necklace, but a tad more updated.

Here are my top 5 (all well under $100):

These mix and match with other pendants and charms to create a classic keepsake-type piece. Lovely!

Obviously, this is no big news to you, loyal and patient blog reader (or similarly awesome person who stumbled across this URL- ‘sup?). I am burnt out. I don’t really know how or why it happened, but since June-ish I have not been able to get excited about writing a post to save my life. Or, I get excited about a post, allow my perfectionist-paranoid streak to take over, and edit the *$%& out of that thing until the moment, whatever it was, is past. For instance: In July, I was invited to a “White Party.” At the time, I was seriously jonesing for a sexy white dress like this one that reality star Kristen Cavallari wore to a Nylon party on the show. (Yeah, I watched “The Hills.” I LIKE TRASHY TV, OK?) And pale neutrals were all the rage anyway, so I thought, what a great opportunity to write a post on white clothing!

No need to dig through the archives. It’s not there.

It’s just one of many poor, dead posts hanging out in my draft folder, never getting their place in the sun. And you know, some are crappy and deserve to be there. But some were short-shifted by my blogger-burnout state of mind.

And so we come to now. I really love blogging. I love writing and I love designing and I love all the nerdy tech stuff too. The fact that I can reach out across the Interwebz to someone across the world thrills me. The idea of reaching out to someone two blocks from me that I have never met gives me goose bumps. What the Internet can do for community and human connection astounds me, but for awhile, I need a break. And I’ve kind of been half-heartedly slumping toward it, so I’m going to go ahead and make it official: don’t expect to see anything here until New Years. I am finishing the year up and then starting anew, hoping that I can jump in and participate in this amazing conversation that is the blogosphere.

For the record, I’m sorry I’ve been absent. Not because I think you’re checking the blog everyday (though that would be AWESOME and I would love you forever), but because I miss reading your comments and your blog posts and having that conversation with all of you. So I’ll be back, but not until after a nice healthy dose of real world holiday cheer. And not until after I’m done with finals (my last EVER), this seasonal job at Borders (mall job, y’all. Yeah…), actually DOING all the freelance work I’ve been pushing to the side, and after I do some of the legwork for my impending and scary-as-hell job hunt a.k.a. first foray into big girl land.

Fabsugar posted their top ten Madewell picks the other day, and I can't help but want to add my own top ten Madewell lusts to the interwebby community. I'm thinking about adding an entirely different column just for them in my Hootsuite browser-- JUST so I know the EXACT moment that the Alexa Chung for Madewell line drops. Yeah. I'm OBSESSED.

So, in no particular order, here are the 10 Madewell items that I'm dying to add to my closet:

1. Denim Midi Shorts in Whitewash, $59
I've been on a hunt all summer for the perfect white denim shorts and, trust me, they are NOT easy to find. These are lovely- great, ladylike length, cute details, and just the right shade of white. Yes please!

2. Jewel Box Necklace in pop pink, $98
I adore this necklace. The pops of pink speak to this summer's neon trend and add just the right amount of fun to a rock-glam piece. My only complaint is the price, but I own some Madewell jewelry, and it's definitely beautiful, quality jewelry.

3. Gardener Romper, $78
So, funny story. I wore a denim vest over my black maxi t-shirt dress the other day for a casual dinner party at a good friend's house. While there, one of my girlfriends complimented my vest, then said I was the only person she knew who could carry it off because it was kind of a weird, retro item. Then she said this: "I mean, it's not like you're wearing a denim romper or anything. That I might not support." Umm... surprise! Haha, I *love* this romper by Madewell. I think it manages to reference overalls without being overalls, and the way they have it styled in their Looks We Love section is just to die for.

4. The Canyon Messenger, $128
I'm super obsessed with tiny, over-the-shoulder bags this summer for their convenience (it's like you're barely wearing a purse!) and adorable-ness (word? yes? no?). This one by Madewell- divine! I love it in this cherry tomato red color, and details like the partial chains on the strap, studs, and a slanted front-zip pocket rank it high on my list of "Next Purse to Buy."

5. Printed Boardwalk Shorts, $78
Printed shorts are back this summer, and I like the slouchy, silky silhouette (WHOA THERE, alliteration) and the vaguely surfer-inspired print on these. Anyone else swooning a little bit?

6. The Suede Sunset Sandal, $148
FabSugar included these beauts too, and for good reason! I'm completely into the vintage wood heels, reminiscent of clogs without being clogs, and the suede cage straps. These would transition perfectly into fall as well, worn with socks and tights. Plus, that low heel looks *super* easy to walk in-- major plus.

7. Pointillist Dress, $148
Once again, Madewell excels at making classic, easy staples with an offbeat twist. Object in question-- this instant-outfit tank dress in an unexpected colorful, dotty pattern. I'm personally quite taken with the parchment color shown below, but the dark metal version looks like it would transition into fall better. In silk georgette fabric, this dress is probably as easy on the skin as it is on the eyes.

8. Stacked-staple Belt, $52
This skinny little waist-cincher ditches rock-and-rolls studs for rock-and-roll... staples? I seriously love the twist on this tough-chic belt, which would look great over the above pointillist dress, don't ya think? Available in classic black and a color called "English saddle" that looks exactly like it sounds: I really can't decide which I like better!

9. Moto Sweatshirt Jacket, $78
There's really nothing I can add to what they say on the website: "You'll throw it on over everything." Yes. Yes, I most certainly would.

10. Twisted Metal & Crystals Necklace, $98
Pretty similar to this other Madewell stunner I fell in love with in-store a few months ago, this necklace is tough and glam and substantial-- everything I want from a necklace right now. It would look fantastic paired with easy basics and upscale work clothes alike. Yes, please!

I'm so rusty at this now (from weeks of neglecting the blogosphere), that I thought I would ease back into posting with a picture-heavy post of my NYC/Philadelphia trip. Except upon uploading my 90-some pictures, about 50 of them were along the lines of this*:

That would be my fat cat, Sully, sitting on my baby sister's prom dress.

Some of them were also of my baby sister getting ready for prom, as I made sure to play up the big-sister-pretending-to-be-the-paparazzi role admirably, but I stop just short of posting them on the Internet for all to see (even though she looked beautiful!). You're welcome, sis.

I did manage to take a few photos in NYC, in between my very busy schedule of lounging in Central Park, shopping on Fifth Avenue, and partying it up in Brooklyn, where we stayed. I am in *love* with Brooklyn, btw. I could seriously get down with that part of NYC. It just feels so much more laid back and like a neighborhood, but it's still exciting and creative. Just loved it. We went to a really cool coffee house that a friend of ours recommended, and when I remember the name, I'll post it here as an update. I took a not-so-secret photo of a cool Brooklyn girl rocking the cool-bra-showing-on-purpose look:

And finally a couple of shots of NYC, but not enough, kids... NOT ENOUGH. Next time I'll make sure to pause my fun long enough to document it. Does anyone else have this problem**?

So there you have it (kind of). My trip to New York! Complete with pedestrian-ogling, much walking, Brooklyn partying, and hot-Australian-meeting. All in all, quite the successful birthday weekend. Thanks Beej for putting up with me for five whole days!

The proverbial joke when you tell someone you need to update your blog is always along the lines of, "Why? Is the Internet going to miss you or something?" (Non-Interweb-lover chuckles while I glare).

OF COURSE the Internet is going to miss me!

Okay, well, even if you didn't, I'm back this week with a few Funsies to help you jumpstart your Friday. What can I say, Internet? I'm a giver.

1. The New York Times thinks we're out of the recession! Yay! Their evidence? Photo shoots like these, street style shoots like this, various magazine spreads, and apparently The Glamourai's entire blog (which I love). In an article aptly titled, "Bull Market? Try Peacock," Ruth F. Ferla elaborates on how fashion is an index of change, and bright colors most probably mean a bright future ahead. Yet another reason to pull out my favorite sunnies!

2. Lots of companies are putting stylists center-stage in an effort to sell more clothes. I gotta say... it might be working. The new stylist-styled (?) sections over at Theory and Ann Taylor LOFT are, quite frankly, pretty kickass. Even if you're not in the market for new clothes, I suggest taking a look-see for the same reason I read JCrew and Anthropologie catalogues-- you'll gain inspiring styling ideas!

3. Refinery 29 has four DIY nail designs for you to try! If you try this, please send me a picture of the end result!

4. Earth day was last week, and if I were a snail-mail-sending-type of gal, I would have sent about a dozen Postcardens out. I would also need to borrow $157, so maybe I'd just have sent one out. Whatever, they're cool, go look.

5. "25 Movies That Shook the World of Fashion"... and Sex and the City: The Movie? So not one of them.

6. This nifty little website, 3flooz.com, makes travel sizes of some of your favorite high-end beauty and hair products. Great for trying something new or packing old favorites!

7. I think this post was included on IFB's roundup too, and it should have been. Ashe Mischief from the blog Dramatis Persona writes about the most taboo subject of all in fashion blogging... how to PAY for it all. Confessions of a Shopaholic, not to mention the stories of thousands of fashion lovers who loved a little too hard, has taught us that fashion's dirty little secret is the debt we go into to buy, buy, buy. How do some of the bigger bloggers pay for it all? How do you keep from going into debt when you love fashion? How do you blog about fashion if you're on a strict, no-shopping budget? Ms. Mischief addresses all these questions and more in a blog post that STILL has me thinking. Seriously, GO READ THIS! And tell me what you think. :)

An Oasis of Pure, Unadulterated Girliness... Sigh

Once again, I must chastise myself for being a bad blogger. But I've decided to skip that part and go straight to my excuses-- loads of homework that I'm putting off, the disorganized mess that was my room and study space until this week, and the most spur-of-the-moment closet makeover of all time. I have no way of proving that, but so far no way of disproving it either, so my assertion remains.

Boo yah.

Anyway, inspired by fun, girly details like those used in this walk-in closet, featured over at Apartment Therapy:

I set off on my own makeover expedition. My closet slopes, so I actually keep all of my hanging clothes in a free-standing wardrobe in my bedroom. So I took out the ridiculously low shelf and hanging bar, spackled up all the holes, and painted that baby the best raspberry shade you've ever seen. Then I went out and purchased two free-standing shelving units from Target to go inside and hold shoes and bags and things like that. Oh, and then I switched out all my winter clothes and summer clothes and piled giveaways into a box. So, I was quite tired by the time my paint was dry, and I only put up one of the shelving units. I'm finishing this sometime soon, but I thought I'd show you all my work in progress, since it's the stumbling block between me and this blog.

What do you think?

Hello lovelies! I've been a bad, bad blogger, making promises and not keeping them. My schoolwork has piled on and so I've been tending to that, but I will be posting the rest of the rain gear posts later this week, and I have a fantastic interview to share with you this Saturday. For now, here are some photos from the NY Time Fashion & Style Section demonstrating how to mix prints and patterns this spring. This is one of my all-time favorite trends and has been for awhile, so I'm completely inspired by the pictures above (as was the Glamourai, where I found the link). I've been playing around with my skinny leopard belt, striped tops, and floral skirts, and I'm starting to quite like the mix... I'll show you one of my experiments when things slow down a bit later this week. :) Hope you're all having wonderful weeks so far, darlings!

April showers bring May flowers... (Part 1 of 3)

Hello, kit-kats! I don't know about where you live, but in DC, the beautiful weather of weeks past has suddenly turned to... well, rain. Lots and lots of rain. Raindrops on roses may have been on of Maria's* favorite things, but personally, I'm no great fan of the wet stuff. Unless the wet stuff refers to something delicious to drink. Then I'm down.

...but I digress.

Part of my reluctance to join the puddle-jumping party has to do with my lack of preparedness. Oh, sure, I have an umbrella... but that's kind of where my list stops. Rain gear just tends to be one of those style areas that you don't think about until you do, if that makes sense. I never think, "Oh, I really need new rain boots" until I'm knee deep in l'acqua alta**:

That's me yesterday... Okay, fine, it isn't, but that's what it felt like!

So, how do you go from sopping wet to delightfully unfazed?

It's all about your outfit, dahling. Coincidentally, that would be my answer to many of life's great questions because that's the kind of mentally disturbed I am. Thus, fashion blogging. Get with the picture, people.

In my unfailing efforts to protect you against the elements, this post got a bit long. To help out (see what a GIVER I am?), I've broken it into three parts. Presenting: Part 1: The Umbrella!

Rain drops are fallin' on my head...

To be sure, the perilous umbrella is your front line against the attacking rain drop armies from above. You're going to be pulling this baby out every time it rains, so why not buy an umbrella that makes you smile in spite of the sour weather?

I love vintage as much as the next fashion blogger, but I do not relish the hunt. Maybe I relish the bargain hunt a little, but when I have to sort through thousands of search results on Ebay, the outcome is more frustrating than fun. Luckily, bloggers Anna and Carrie are thinking of me: Everyday they feature a different Ebay find on their Tumblr. Someone got these $350 Cynthia Vincent sandals for a cool $50. Remember that time I posted a photo of Barbie bent over a commode as if she had had one too many? That was totally inappropriate,* but these Barbie pictures aren't-- I swear! Does this mean I can start playing with dolls again??
