										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I&#8217;d like to point out that between all of my <a title="https://chicfitness.wordpress.com/2011/02/22/breakfast-sundae/" href="https://chicfitness.wordpress.com/2011/02/22/breakfast-sundae/" target="_blank"><span style="color:#ff99cc;">breakfast sundaes</span></a> and <a title="https://chicfitness.wordpress.com/2011/02/16/i-need-a-jump-start/" href="https://chicfitness.wordpress.com/2011/02/16/i-need-a-jump-start/" target="_blank"><span style="color:#ff99cc;">breakfast cakes</span></a>&#8230;I <em>do</em> make time to workout. <img src="https://s0.wp.com/wp-content/mu-plugins/wpcom-smileys/twemoji/2/72x72/1f609.png" alt="😉" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></p>
<p>I tend to loosely follow a <a title="http://bodyforlife.com/library/exercise" href="http://bodyforlife.com/library/exercise" target="_blank"><span style="color:#ff99cc;">Body For Life</span></a> style workout schedule because after trying a few different cardio/strength training plans, I&#8217;ve found that I can be most consistent with BFL.</p>
<p>This means that I typically make 3 days out of the week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday for now) pure cardio days and 3 days strength training days (Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday).  My rest day is usually Sunday.</p>
<p>On days that I lift I still do a little bit of cardio, though it is less intense than &#8220;cardio specific&#8221; days.  This is just what works best for me and my body&#8211; it is different for everyone!</p>
<p>Where am I going with this&#8230;</p>
<p>Oh, right.  Yesterday was an upper body day&#8211; and a particularly good one at that. <img src="https://s0.wp.com/wp-content/mu-plugins/wpcom-smileys/twemoji/2/72x72/1f642.png" alt="🙂" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></p>

<li>Horizontal row machine: 12x @ 70lbs, 10x, 8x</li>
<li>Dumbbell shoulder press: 12x @ 12.5lbs/shoulder, 10x, 10x</li>
<li>Dumbbell lat raises: 12x @ 8lbs, 12x, 12x</li>
<li>Cable biceps curl: 12x @ 22.5lbs, 10x, 8x</li>
<li>Triceps raise: 12x @ 25lbs, 12x, 10x</li>

<p>I felt satisfied after this workout.  Lately, I have been struggling with pushing myself during strength workouts&#8211; especially if the gym is busy.  I detest crowds so when the gym is packed I just want to get outta there!  So I was a happy girl after this tough session.</p>
<p>I have also taken on a new cardio love as of late.  Thanks to <a title="http://www.juliegolean.com/" href="http://www.juliegolean.com/" target="_blank">Julie</a>, who has repeatedly declared her love for spinning on her blog, I decided to give it a shot.  I love it!  For too long I have been monogamous with the treadmill&#8211; it was time for a break.  Plus, ever since I ran my first half-marathon a year ago, my ankle has been mighty sensitive.  Spinning doesn&#8217;t irritate it nearly as much as the treadmill so I think I&#8217;ll be alternating between the two from now on.</p>
<p>Meals have been really repetitive lately as all I have been craving (other than breakfast foods) has been hummus, nutritional yeast, pita and salad.  Literally.</p>

<li>1/3 cup oatmeal</li>
<li>2/3 cup water or almond milk</li>
<li>1 TBSP unsweetened cocoa powder</li>
<li>1 TSP agave</li>
<li>1 TBSP flaxseed meal</li>

<p>For Protein Banana Soft-Serve (Adapted from <a title="http://www.choosingraw.com/this-post-will-change-your-life/" href="http://www.choosingraw.com/this-post-will-change-your-life/" target="_blank"><span style="color:#ff99cc;">Choosing Raw</span></a>):</p>
<ul>
<li>1 frozen banana</li>
<li>1/2 scoop vanilla whey protein powder</li>
<li>A few splashes unsweetened vanilla Almond Breeze</li>
<li>Toppings: nuts, sprinkles, chocolate chips, etc.</li>
</ul>
<p><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Make It:</span></p>
<p>Oats:</p>
<ul>
<li>Microwave oats and milk/water until cooked.</li>
<li>Add cocoa powder and agave.</li>
<li>Chill in fridge while making the soft-serve.</li>
</ul>
<p>Soft-serve:</p>
<ul>
<li>Add banana and a few splashes (~2-3 TBSP) of almond milk to your blender.</li>
<li>Puree until smooth but still thick, adding more splashes of almond milk if needed.</li>
<li>Add protein powder and blend until incorporated.</li>
</ul>
<p>Layer!:</p>
<ul>
<li>When oats are chilled to your liking, remove from fridge and top with soft-serve.</li>
<li>Add any toppings you like!  I chose walnuts but I wish I would have had some sprinkles!</li>

<p>What can I say?  We&#8217;re spontaneous.</p>
<p>Instead, we spent the weekend dancing the state lines of Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana.</p>
<p>It all started Saturday evening when we drove to Newport, KY to visit <a title="http://www.newportonthelevee.com/" href="http://www.newportonthelevee.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color:#ff99cc;">Newport on the Levee</span></a>.  If you&#8217;ve never been to or heard of this little gem I suggest you plan a trip.  It&#8217;s an outdoor plaza with fancy restaurants, a movie theater, an old fashioned candy shop and more.  My favorite place in Newport however, is the aquarium.</p>
<p>Ever since I was a young girl my favorite animals to visit at the zoo have been snakes and fish&#8211; my mom thinks I&#8217;m weird.</p>
<p>I can&#8217;t really argue with her.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, we arrived too late on Saturday to visit the aquarium but here are some pictures of a previous trip T and I took there <em>way</em> back in 2008!</p>

<p style="text-align:left;">Part of the reason this aquarium is so fun is because there are tunnels where you can walk underneath the glass.  From what I recall, the boyfriend and I worked for 20 minutes to try to get this &#8220;action shot&#8221; of a shark swimming right above us&#8211; hence the blur.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">Alas, we were not able to pay a second visit to our fish friends this past weekend&#8211; so I settled for taking pictures of the levee at sunset.</p>

<p style="text-align:center;"><em>I also shared some of T&#8217;s steak and lobster tail.  It was ok&#8211; but my heart was with the salad.</em></p>
<p style="text-align:left;">This brings us to Sunday, on which we found ourselves in Lawrenceburg, Indiana at the Hollywood Casino.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">We met our parents and some of their friends at the casino for a little day of family gambling fun.  That&#8217;s normal, right? <img src="https://s0.wp.com/wp-content/mu-plugins/wpcom-smileys/twemoji/2/72x72/1f609.png" alt="😉" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></p>
<p style="text-align:left;">My parents enjoy it and they go once or twice a year.  Since the boyfriend and I both recently turned 21, we decided to go along for the ride.  I learned something about myself that I never would have guessed&#8230;</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">This gal is thrifty.</p>

<p style="text-align:left;">It was a fun atmosphere and I enjoyed listening to the celebrity impersonators sing karaoke while the rest of my crew gambled their hearts out.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">So that was my state-hopping weekend in a nutshell!  I originally hadn&#8217;t planned anything for this past weekend but as it turns out, the unplanned weekends sometimes turn out the most fun!</p>

<p style="text-align:center;"><em>And a delicious bowl it was: 1/3 cup oatmeal cooked with 1/3 cup almond milk &amp; 1/3 cup water, 1/2 scoop Optimum Nutrition vanilla whey,1 tbsp flaxseed meal, frozen berries and raw almond butter.</em></p>
<p style="text-align:left;">Before today I never liked protein powder in oatmeal but I think cutting it back to 1/2 instead of a full scoop really did wonders&#8230;this was delicious!  Dare I say I have finally gotten out of my breakfast rut?  We shall see!</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">My school books have been staring me in my face the entire time I&#8217;ve been writing this post&#8211; I think it&#8217;s time to give them some attention.</p>

<p>The weather has been<em> so nice</em> lately here in Cincy that I decided I&#8217;d blog from the outdoors this morning.  I awoke, packed up my breakfast, coffee and computer and traveled downstairs to find a place to set up shop.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, it wasn&#8217;t as warm outside this morning as it looked&#8230;too cold for my booty!  I tried to hang in there but eventually called it quits and retreated to the warmth of my dorm room.</p>

<p style="text-align:left;">It was nice to take a morning walk around campus and get a little fresh air.  Girl needs it.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">I am excited for later today because the boyfriend is coming to Cincy and we are thinking of trying out a vegetarian/vegan restaurant near here called <a title="http://lovinghut.us/cincinnati_01/" href="http://lovinghut.us/cincinnati_01/" target="_blank"><span style="color:#ff99cc;">The Loving Hut.</span></a> I&#8217;ve been perusing its menu all morning&#8211; there are so many delicious looking options!  The raw pizza and raw taco salad are making me hungry for lunch already!</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">As I have <a title="https://chicfitness.wordpress.com/2011/01/31/lets-do-it-and-do-it-do-it-do-it/" href="https://chicfitness.wordpress.com/2011/01/31/lets-do-it-and-do-it-do-it-do-it/" target="_blank"><span style="color:#ff99cc;">mentioned before</span></a><span style="color:#ffffff;">,</span> I am not vegan nor am I vegetarian&#8211; but I like to dabble in both types of diets.  Aside from the health benefits, I like trying out different types of diets and cuisines because it&#8217;s just plain fun!  I wish I could better explain this, but I feel that there is just something more interesting about eating pizza from a vegan pizza parlor than if I were to go to any old pizza place around town.  Likewise, the thought of ordering a slice of vegan chocolate cake from a vegan restaurant is more exciting than going to a Kroger bakery and choosing the non-vegan version from there.  This doesn&#8217;t stem from a health point of view&#8211; vegan desserts are no healthier, nutritionally speaking, than regular ones.  I think it has to do more with the fact that I know non-traditional ingredients and new methods of cooking (or not cooking, for that matter) are going into the vegan food options.  I don&#8217;t eat out at restaurants very often for two main reasons: one being that it is much cheaper to prepare my own meals; And two, because I&#8217;d rather prepare my own healthy meals than go to a restaurant and have to navigate the menu for something both delicious <em>and</em> healthy.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">Fortunately fo<span style="color:#ffffff;">r </span><del>me</del> my boyfriend, The Loving Hut looks to be fairly priced and definitely has healthy options aplenty!</p>

<p>You want examples?</p>
<p>All of my time spent researching health/fitness shows that we should focus on eating complex carbs, that they have a lower glycemic index which is better for fat loss.  Fine, I&#8217;ll do you one better&#8211; <em>all</em> of the carbs I eat will either be whole grains or fruits/vegetables.</p>
<p>Low sugar diets are all the hype.  Alright, c-ya later added sugar.</p>
<p>Fruits and vegetables are important in our diets.  Duh, that&#8217;s why I eat at least a serving at every meal.  <em>Beat that.</em></p>
<p>Whaaaa?  Who exactly am I competing with and <em>why?<br />
</em></p>
<p>We most often associate deprivation with dieting and cutting calories.  But even though I am eating more now than I ever have, I have still been depriving myself of foods I truly want to eat because I could always &#8220;do better.&#8221;</p>
<p>At the grocery store today I reached for these&#8230;</p>

<p>&#8230;looked at the nutrition label and then automatically put them back on the shelf because they were made of &#8220;<em>enriched</em> wheat flour&#8221; and I read somewhere that &#8220;enriched&#8221; means the whole grain wasn&#8217;t used.</p>
<p><strong>Then it hit me</strong>.  In what world are these considered unhealthy?  They are a lower-calorie alternative to regular bagels and have 5 grams of fiber but I wouldn&#8217;t buy them because they have enriched wheat flour in them?</p>
<p>I know what some of you are thinking, &#8220;This gal is crazy, bagel thins aren&#8217;t junk food.  They are DIET food for goodness sakes!&#8221;  I know&#8211; I&#8217;m right there with you.  That&#8217;s exactly what I&#8217;m saying!</p>
<p>Somewhere in my quest to become more nonchalant about my eating habits, I have in fact become more strict with myself.</p>
<p>I have failed to keep focus on the big picture and have instead been fixated on the small details.</p>
<p><strong>Basically, I have lost my sense of balance.</strong></p>
<p>A year ago, I would have considered those bagel thins to be &#8220;healthy enough&#8221; and I would have bought them and enjoyed them day in and day out.  Why now am I insisting on only eating the &#8220;healthiest&#8221; foods I possibly can <em>at every meal?</em></p>
<p>I started thinking, &#8220;Have I subconsciously <em>(consciously?)</em> kept myself from doing other things that would make me happy in lieu of this apparent pursuit for ultimate health?&#8221;</p>
<p>A skipped night or two out with friends comes to mind.</p>
<p>So does a much needed day off from the gym gone ungranted.</p>
<p>I truly am a firm believer in balance being an important tool in achieving a fulfilling life.  I&#8217;ve decided I need to stop being a hypocrite and start &#8220;practicing what I preach&#8221; so to say.  So when dinner time rolled around tonight, I asked myself what I truly <em>wanted.</em></p>

<p>Pita and hummus&#8211; <strong>that&#8217;s it</strong>.  I didn&#8217;t force myself to include a lean protein or worry about getting that serving of veggies I just wasn&#8217;t feelin&#8217;.  I ate delicious pita bread and hummus until I was full.</p>
<p>I need to remember that being too strict with my health isn&#8217;t any better for me than being too careless.  It is actually counterproductive.</p>
<p>Yes, I realize and importance of eating whole grains, fruits and vegetables; remaining physically active and limiting unhealthy behaviors (staying up late, drinking, etc.)  And my beliefs about the importance of living a healthy lifestyle still haven&#8217;t changed.  But sometimes, a girl&#8217;s just gotta<strong> live.</strong></p>
<p>At the end of the day, I want to be healthy <em>and </em>happy.  Not just one or the other.</p>
<p>My humble advice to you?</p>
<p>Next time you find yourself obsessing over a less-than-stellar workout, an overly indulgent day of eats, or something in your life not going exactly how you wanted it to:  take a step back, let it go and take a look at the <strong>big picture.</strong></p>
<p>Here&#8217;s to living life to the fullest&#8211; being the healthiest <strong>and</strong> happiest we can be.</p>

<p style="text-align:left;">Okay girl crush aside, I had a rough night last night.  At around 11 0&#8242; clock I attempted to fall asleep but didn&#8217;t actually get there until closer to midnight.  Then, I woke up at 3:45 AM <em>starving</em>!  I was afraid eating anything would keep me from going back to sleep so I just sucked it up&#8211; but I woke up <em>again</em> at 5.  I snacked on a few dates and dried apricots and surfed StumbleUpon.com until finally falling back asleep at around 6.  <em>Seriously?</em></p>
<p style="text-align:left;">I haven&#8217;t written about it because I&#8217;m still testing things out, but I recently bought a <a title="http://bodybugg.com/" href="http://bodybugg.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color:#ff99cc;">Body Bugg</span></a> and have been using it for about a week.  I love it because I see how much I burn on a daily basis as well as how hard I&#8217;m working during different physical activity (e.g. running on the treadmill vs. weight lifting).  I have been logging my food intake in the system as well and it has caused me to <em>eat more</em> than I was because my calorie burn is higher than I had thought.  So why then, if I&#8217;m eating more than before am I waking up hungry in the middle of the night?</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">My best guess is that since my body wasn&#8217;t getting an adequate amount of calories before, it was purposefully slowing itself down to conserve what energy it was getting.  Now that more energy is available to it, it&#8217;s speeding up.  Proof to support this?  A week ago, when I started using my Body Bugg my average at rest calorie burn was 1.1 calories/minute.  Now, a week later and after upping my calories, it has jumped to an average of 1.3 calories/minute.  This seems miniscule, I know, but it actually is a significant amount.  Enough for my stomach to wake me up in the middle of the night.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">Grrr.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">Needless to say, that after my crappy night&#8217;s sleep I was <strong>not</strong> waking up at 6:30 this morning to head to the gym before class.  Instead, I&#8217;m watching one of my favorite morning TV shows and enjoying my <a title="https://chicfitness.wordpress.com/2011/02/15/ode-to-breakfast/" href="https://chicfitness.wordpress.com/2011/02/15/ode-to-breakfast/" target="_blank"><span style="color:#ff99cc;">breakfast time</span></a><span style="color:#ff99cc;">.</span></p>
<p style="text-align:left;">I needed a special breakfast this morning to get me going.  Inspired by <a title="http://theoatmealdiaries.blogspot.com/2011/02/best-pancakes-ever.html" href="http://theoatmealdiaries.blogspot.com/2011/02/best-pancakes-ever.html" target="_blank"><span style="color:#ff99cc;">Megan D&#8217;s</span></a> carrot cake pancakes, I decided to create a carrot cake version of my breakfast oat bran cake.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">I was not willing to grate baby carrots in the middle of my dorm room at 8:30 AM so I went for the easier route and employed this:</p>

<p>To my second love: <strong>breakfast</strong>.</p>
<p>If I could possibly do so and still be nutritionally balanced, I would eat breakfast three times a day.  It would almost be fair to say that I couldn&#8217;t care less what I eat for lunch or dinner, but breakfast <em>has</em> to be my way.</p>
<p>I don&#8217;t know if this correlates with me being a morning person in general?  Or if I am only a morning person because of my love for breakfast?  Was it the chicken or the egg?  Mmm&#8230;eggs.</p>
<p>My morning routine goes one of two ways:</p>
<p><strong>A.</strong> I rise and shine <em>super </em>early and immediately go to the gym.  After working out I return to my dorm and shower/get ready for the day, then sit down to enjoy my breakfast.</p>
<p><strong>OR</strong></p>
<p><strong>B.</strong> I wake up, sit down to enjoy my breakfast and then head to the gym.</p>
<p>I am <strong>not</strong> one of those grab-and-go breakfast eaters.  I refuse.  I like to sit down with a warm cup of coffee and my <a title="https://chicfitness.wordpress.com/2011/02/11/kickin-it/" href="https://chicfitness.wordpress.com/2011/02/11/kickin-it/" target="_blank"><span style="color:#ff99cc;">oat bran breakfast cake</span></a> or my <a title="https://chicfitness.wordpress.com/2011/02/14/my-big-fat-greek-v-day/" href="https://chicfitness.wordpress.com/2011/02/14/my-big-fat-greek-v-day/" target="_blank"><span style="color:#ff99cc;">delicious protein pancakes</span></a> and relax while watching TV&#8211; preferably Dr. Oz or The Doctors.</p>

<p><strong>Fun fact</strong>: My boyfriend is a Valentine&#8217;s Day baby.  Seeing as I would be back in Cincinnati today and he would be in Columbus, we celebrated his birthday/Valentine&#8217;s Day on Saturday night.  The boyfriend requested that I make him dinner&#8211; and he wanted it to be vegetarian! (I&#8217;m rubbing off on him ;-))  I made him a Greek feast, unfortunately I forgot my camera so I didn&#8217;t get a chance to snap a pic of the spread.  I did it up right though, with a trio of hummus, marinated olives and mushrooms, pita bread, raw veggies, homemade tzatziki sauce and this:</p>

<p style="text-align:left;">The perfect centerpiece for our vegetarian meal.  I&#8217;ve tried <a title="http://www.fantasticfoods.com/productlist.aspx?catid=Vegetarian+Entrees" href="http://www.fantasticfoods.com/productlist.aspx?catid=Vegetarian+Entrees" target="_blank">Fantastic World Foods</a> sloppy joe mix before and it was delicious, so I figured the falafel would be a good choice as well.  I love all Mediterranean food  but I have never tried falafel before&#8211;so this was my first experience.  They were super easy to prepare&#8211;all you have to do is add water to the packaged mix.  The directions read to fry the falafel but I stay away from fried foods if I can, so I chose the broiling option.  They turned out really tasty, the only change I would make would be to coat them in olive oil before broiling next time so that they would crisp up a bit more on the outside.  I used a 1 TBSP measure to portion out the mix and roll into balls, it made about 24 of them, so we had leftovers!</p>

<p style="text-align:left;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Ingredients:</span></p>
<ul>
<li>1/4 c. of your favorite pancake mix (I used Hodgson Mill&#8217;s buckwheat pancake mix.)</li>
<li>1/2 scoop vanilla protein powder (I used my Plant Fusion protein&#8211; the texture would be different with whey protein but it would still taste good I&#8217;m sure!)</li>
<li>1/2 TSP baking powder</li>
<li>1/4 TSP cinnamon</li>
<li>1 TBSP flaxseed meal</li>
<li>1 TBSP unsweetened, flaked coconut</li>
<li>1/2 banana, mashed</li>
<li>1 TSP agave</li>
<li>1/3 c. almond milk (plus more)</li>
</ul>
<p><span style="text-decoration:underline;">To Make:</span></p>
<ul>
<li>Combine first 6 ingredients in a small bowl.</li>
<li>In a separate bowl, mash banana and add agave and almond milk.</li>
<li>Add dry ingredients to the banana mixture and stir.  I ended up adding about an additional 1/3 cup milk in order to get the consistency of the batter right.  Start out with 1/3 cup and add more in small amounts as needed&#8211; it will vary with different protein powders.</li>
<li>Spray a pan with non-stick spray and put it over medium heat.  Once the pan is hot add about 1/3 of the batter.</li>
<li>The cakes do not rise like normal pancakes, because of the banana they take on a consistency like that of a latke.  Cook until nicely brown and slightly caramelized, then flip and do the same on the other side.</li>
<li>Repeat with the rest of the batter.</li>

<p>I just can&#8217;t kick these breakfast cakes to the curb. They&#8217;re so filling and a great way to pack in a lot of healthy foods to jump start the day.  This is a new version, though, using brown rice protein powder to bump up the protein.</p>

<p>So about that cold.  I have been drinking a lot of water and chose an orange as my snack to get a little extra vitamin C in for the day.  Vitamin C doesn&#8217;t cure a cold, but it can help reduce the symptoms of one.  Digging through my past nutrition science classes I found a few need-to-know facts about good ol&#8217; vitamin C.</p>

<ul>
<li>Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin, meaning it combines with water from other foods/drinks in our stomach and is then absorbed into our bodies.</li>
<li>This also means that the excess vitamin C in our system leaves the body through urination.  This is why vitamin C needs to be consumed with some consistency.</li>
<li>Though often recognized to be, oranges aren&#8217;t the top food source of vitamin C&#8211; <span style="color:#ff0000;">red bell peppers</span> have nearly twice as much.  Oranges, however, are still a good source.</li>
<li>Vitamin C does more to prevent colds than it can do to help alleviate one once it has been contracted.  Beat the winter cold to the punch and include red bell pepper, broccoli or kale in your next meal!</li>
</ul>
