Colour Blocking & Your Body Shape Tips

This season is all about colours and using them in bold and wonderful ways. We predict this trend is here to stay well beyond Summer. This look is definitely for those that want to stand out from the crowd, wallflowers need not apply. The whole trick to colour blocking is putting together chunks of colour that you would not expect to see together. The rule to colour blocking is that there are no rules, except consider your body shape so you don't end up looking like a rubik's cube! Plus, think twice about having four colours in your clothing and then your shoes and handbag are also colour blocked - you will end up looking like a bunch of crayons. Try and use common sense as to how many colours - our view is maximum four in one outfit, ideally three colours at one time to remain stylish and not too 'try hard'.

Be brave, have fun with it and enjoy putting colours that work together. If you don't like the idea of wearing block colours from head to toe, then try mixing with a neutral tone like beige or khaki, or simply experiment with accessories to achieve a similar affect. A small clutch in a bright colour or a pair of gorgeous bright heels will work wonders for bringing colour into your life. This is the perfect trend to really experiment with your own seasonal colours.

To help pull this look off successfully, here are some tips for your body shape to make the most of this season's biggest trend...

TRIANGLE

Bigger in the hips and bottom compared to your bust and shoulders?

When colour blocking, wear your bright colours on top with the bottom colour muted or toned down. Reduce your bottom area by avoiding pale colours in this area. Given you need to balance your shoulders, structured jackets or tops work wonders for you.

Broader in the shoulders and bust in comparison to your hips and bottom?

Ideally, you should wear your bright and bold colours below the waist - there a plenty of options for pants or skirts. Bright coloured jeans work well for achieving this effect. Keep colours and patterns plain on top and try crisp fabrics and styles.

Rectangle

RECTANGLE
No waist definition and similar size on top and bottom?

Give the illusion of curves by wearing bright coloured flowing tops and feminine dresses that cinch in at the waist. Fabrics are your key. Look for softer fabrics rather than stiff structured materials.

Wider bust and thighs with a thin waist?

This season works for you but your watch-out is around wearing block square shapes on top. It is best to stick with simple colour blocking rather than multiple colour blocking in one item of clothing. Try not to wear too much colour on the bust or below the waist as this will focus attention on your curves. Vertical colour blocking works best.

ROUND/OVAL
Fullness in the middle with a flatter bottom and slender legs and arms?

Round

Stick with simple colours and avoid fussy prints or too much colour. Play with layers. Wear colours vertically. Bold accessories would work great on you. Like a statement clutch or colour blocking heels.

How to DIY Your Own Wardrobe Detox

Detoxing your wardrobe is always loaded with emotion. What to keep? What to go? Sometimes the sheer sight of your wardrobe can be overwhelming too.

The style team at CHIC in the City have battled tug-of-wars with our Wardrobe Detox clients over the years now and consoled weeping one's terrified of letting go of road-weary fashion ‘sentimentals’. We now have it down to a fine art and wanted to share some tips to help you get started. Of course, if it is all too much, we are only ever a phone call away...

Here's our quick guide to wardrobe editing the hardcore way:

BAG IT

Have the following large bags ready for sorting garments into:

Archive - its too soon to say goodbye to these fashion faux pas. Remove them from the wardrobe and file as sentimental.
Reinvent and alterate - they still have life they just need updating.
Sell - never forget the power of eBay if you have a designer item that could still be worth something. Reinvest the money from selling your garments into new ones. If you're not into eBay, don't forget second hand designer stores too!
Donate - wearing these garments are embarrassing. Listen to your inner voice.
Dump - even Vinnies and Salvation Army would refuse these. They are worn, stained, torn, have lost shape and colour.

KNOW YOUR BODY TYPE

Before you edit your wardrobe take a honest look at your silhouette or the the contour of your bodyshape. Get to know it and you will know how to flatter it. Check out our five part series How to Dress for your Shape (as featured in our blog) as a guide before you get started. Some of us may be a combination of a couple of body shapes such as a mix of a triangle body shape and hourglass. Get to know the right shape for your frame and draw attention to the best parts. A lady with personal style is confident in her body shape - she knows it and how to work it and is sexier as a result. RUTHLESSLY SELECT

Weeding out your wardrobe requires a draconian mentality! Be focused and merciless. Now ask yourself the following:
1. Has it seen daylight in the past 12 months? Golden rule: If you don't use it - Lose it!
2. Does it fits perfectly and is well cut?
3. Is the colour flattering? If it is you'll usually be complimented when wearing it.

If you answer NO to any of the above, then add it to the bag pile. Still deciding if its days are done or there is still life in the old garment? Perhaps its not in high rotation because it needs a few tweaks. Consider alterations. A good tailor can update a look with a few tucks or a new hem. Or why not invest in a professional dyeing service such as Culla Change. Make those blacks look as good as new.

STORAGE SOLUTIONS How can you find anything to wear if you dont know what's in your wardrobe? Ideally you want to be able to see what you have at a glance. If space is tight, store seasonally to make room. Homeware stores have a great selection of storage options which are worth investing in to help ensure your closet is less chaotic and organised. Get organised

Wooden hangers - for jackets and coats - these help the shoulder line
Pant hangers for skirts and pants
Plastic hangers for shirts, pants and skirts
Soft padded hangers for silk blouses and delicate dresses
Store all shoes in their boxes or invest in a clear shoe boxes such as PinkLily
Return all wire hangers to the dry cleaners. Never hang your clothes on wire hangers.

Box it or tissue wrap it Delicates such as beaded garments need to be wrapped in tissue and folded away. Fill large totes and hangbags with old t-shirts to maintain their shape and keep in their cloth bag. Wrap delicate clutches in tissue. Finally, to finish off - line drawers with scented paper and hang moth repellent ( I use lavender ones as they smell nicer).

Rosemount Australia Fashion Week Trends Spring/Summer 2011/2012

In May, the buyers, stylists, editors, designers and celebrities of the world's fashion industry descended upon Sydney for Rosemount Australian Fashion Week. I was lucky enough to be amongst it. Over 50 of Australia's best fashion designers showcased what we will be wearing come Spring/Summer. The week opened with the much loved Zimmermann and closed with the beautifully daring Bowie.

Here are the hot trends for Spring Summer 2011/2012 straight from the RAFW runways. What will you be filling your wardrobes with?

White, white, white and more white.

Designers could not get enough of this white hot colour. It was everywhere. Tops, skirts, dresses, shorts, shoes. It doesn't matter if it is tailored, tight, loose, sheer or pleated as long as you are wearing it head to toe. Designer, Michael Lo Sordo did this trend the best, as well as Josh Goot and Arnsdorf.

Colour Blocking

This is my personal favourite trend as I love bright bright colours. I simply cannot get enough of purple and orange in my wardrobe and the latter was all over the catwalk. All colours in the brightest and boldest shades imaginable are going to be huge. This look is definitely for those that want to stand out from the crowd, wallflowers need not apply. If you don't like the idea of wearing block colours from head to toe, simply use accessories to achieve a similar affect. Dress up a black or navy outfit with big bold colourful jewellery, handbags or shoes. This is the perfect trend to really experiment with your own seasonal colours. Bianca Spender, Karla Spetic and Camilla and Marc hit the nail on the head with this trend.

Long lengths, the longer the better
Maxi dresses are going to be very popular again this year but this time their little sister the maxi skirt is going to be just as popular. Different colours, different patterns, different materials. As long as it is creating a long and lean silhouette you are set. Head to Therese Rawsthorne, Ginger and Smart, Kirrily Johnson and Manning Cartell for amazing maxi skirts.

Sheer

From sheer dresses showing a lot of skin to a teasing panel here or there on an outfit, sheer is going to be in. My suggestion would be to stick to a little peep of sheer, this is a trend that could easily be gotten very wrong. Some things should be left to the imagination. Again, Michael Lo Sordo did some amazing sheer pieces, as did Kirrily Johnson and Sara Phillips.

Beauty is just as important during Fashion Week as the clothes. Three trends that really stood out were:

Half moon nails

So many designers followed this look. Manning Cartel, Magdalena Valevska and Gail Sorronda to name a few. Not so easy to do yourself, I suggest you head to a nail salon to perfect this look.

Blitz foil nails

First off the fashion week rank with this look was trend setters Romance Was Born. Followed by Camilla & Mark, Ellery and Rachel Gilbert. Blitz are very thin foils that you (or your nail salon) apply directly to your nail with instand results, no need to wait for nal polish to dry. The perfect beauty accessory for busy women.

Big natural eyebrows

Hooray! Throw away those tweezers and save time on your beauty routine. Everyone from Lover to Dhini to Gary Bigeni and Kirrily Johnson opted for this look.

Princess Perfect - Style yourself like Kate Middleton

We just love the amazing job that Kate Middleton…now Princess Catherine Elizabeth is styling herself. A classic chic and modern look that mixes not only designer brands but also brands for the everyday girl. She puts her spin on a classic approach, with a chic, less is more look. Here are a few ideas on how you too can have her style...

The LBD

Start with the form fitting LBD, which in Kate’s case is the Little Bold Dress. Try bright colors like blue, purple, red and green, or a patterned wrap. While you may not be able to snag Kate’s engagement dress from Issa (it’s been sold out everywhere since the November 16th wedding announcement), there are quite a few options other options to choose from. Our favourite is Diane von Furstenberg Silk Jersey Wraps, now at Westfield Sydney, the store has a beautiful variety of printed wrap dress options to help you look royally divine!

Blazer

A staple every woman should have in her closet is a tailored blazer. Replicate Kate’s look by finding a tailored, neutral colored blazer that nips at the waist. This look is flattering on every body shape because it defines your waist and shows off a feminine figure. Pair it with the aforementioned LBD or casually over a t-shirt with jeans.

Go to Zara at Westfield Sydney, Arthur Galan or Saba for a selection of blazers both casual and dressy.

Denim
Kate’s often seen out and about in dark denim cigarette cut jeans, often tucked into her black to-the-knee boots. Our advice is to wear dark denim in a cut most flattering for your figure type. Always, ensure that they’re slimming and figure hugging, but classic and not trend driven. Look for Paige denim, J Brand or AG Adriano Goldshmeid Jeans for the most flattering and stylish in denim.

Pumps
Whilst we are firm believers that a woman can never have too many pairs of shoes, it’s best to start with the basics. Like Kate, you should own a pair of classic black and nude pumps. They are elegant, go with everything from jeans to dresses, and elongate your ladylike legs. Check out Christian Louboutin Rolando Leather $695. Or try Nat-Sui who do beautiful quality pumps.

Trench Coat

A classic trench is a must for Kate’s wardrobe in misty London and a must-have for your collection. Annalie's Wardrobe Detox & Shopping Experience

I promised myself after the birth of my second (and last!) child I would take time and invest in myself. I just wanted to make the most of what I had, meaning clearly my body! Also the clothes I had in my wardrobe and the items I would purchase in the future.

I found Fleur and CHIC in the City more ‘by luck than judgment’ as I had no point of reference and I was very happy and blessed I did. To put her assignment into context, I am no high-end fashion expert of someone who wants to spend lots of money or time on my wardrobe… I have 2 young kids, work and not skilled enough to know what works or doesn’t. I needed a great deal of guidance establishing a style and then where to shop for it! Making the most of what I had!

So full of trepidation and probably somewhat overwhelmed by the ‘fashion expert’ arriving we met. Firstly, although Fleur is clearly a fashion expert she was lovely, warm, engaging and made me feel instantly comfortable. We went through the much needed wardrobe detox which involved 4 wardrobes of items I had lovingly collected over 15 years.

Over 3 hours we had disguarded approximately 1/3^rd of my wardrobe in a manner that was decisive, convincing and right! Something my husband had been trying to do for years!

From there, a few weeks later we went shopping. Fleur had prepared the day and ‘boy’ did we have fun. Yes, we spent some money but it was meaningful. We made some investment purchases, made items in my wardrobe work and defined a style which today I love, can make work and feel good in. I found specialist boutiques I did not know existed and more ‘high street’ labels that work too.

Today, nearly 1 year later, I still have great relationships with some super designers who I met along the way, all gems, not overly priced and passionate about what they do. Now I love my clothes, making my style work and looking as good as I can!

Since my ‘make over’ I have introduced my husband who had recently been through the ‘process’ with trepidation and high levels of skepticism …. He loved it! They had fun and now he looks handsome as ever!

How to Wear Lace

It used to be that lace was reserved for little girl’s birthday frocks or Nanna’s best hankies, but as we move come into this Autumn/Winter season, lace is a key trend that has been either toughened up, re-worked, or re-vamped, for a modern classic twist.

Now…no matter how lace has been worn on the catwalk or is merchandised in stores, lace is a very tricky trend that can go from sweet to trashy, trendy to gothic or sexy to matronly very quickly! Lace worn badly can age you, make you appear frumpy, or even a little too vamp!

So to assist you, here are a few tips on how to wearing lace this season:

1. Integrate - The key to wearing lace is to make it the key part of your outfit, the detailing will often lift your look. Stick to neutrals but avoid whites (too bridal). Gray, black, blush, and beige are a good way to go. Check out the amazing gold coloured lace blouson just in at Mr Rose - stunning!

2. Retain the Mystery - avoid showing too much skin, and steer clear of dowdy cuts. If you wear a lace skirt, then cover up on top. If you wear a longer skirt (to your knees) or trousers, then you can show more up top.

3. Less is more - You should avoid wearing jewellery on lace, as this will probably look over the top. Wear it with minimum jewellery. If you choose to wear jewellery then stud earrings, or a gold bangle can work well. Style hint: Pearls are not good with lace.

4. Style is in the pattern - Go for fine lace, rather than large chunky patterns. Look to see how much sheen the lace holds too as this can often indicate it is not great quality. It is worthwhile investing in quality lace options rather than cheaper options as it will be a wardrobe staple you will wear and wear. Italian lace is the best. On the subject of hems, another one to avoid is a jagged, uneven cut lace. It can appear medieval which works for very few people.

5. Black lace stockings are best - Black lace stockings are hot with skirts this winter, but don't ever wear them with a denim skirt. Denim skirt plus black lace stockings is running the risk of looking cheap. Of course, you know to never wear white stockings, unless your going to a dress-up party! Black stockings will always go best with a black skirt - check out the new styles just in at Mr Rose. If your wear black stockings with a black skirt, go for a different coloured top, to avoid looking too Gothic.

6. Top-to-toe lace - If a clothing item is made completely of lace, wear it paired down with simple underclothing and accessories. Make the dress the statement. A nude underslip under a black lace dress is gorgeous paired with nude heels. A touch of a plain bold colours as an accessory can be a great complement too - a bright clutch or heel can set the outfit off. Avoid wearing lace with patterned or print clothing - just too much going on. Lace panels on clothing are a good alternative to full lace garments. Using lace patterned accessories is another great way to incorporate this trend.

7. Fits well not tight - choose quality lace that is not too tight on your body, wear it so it skims and flatters, lace can give the illusion of a larger finger if not worn properly.

8. Mix it up - try wearing lace with other fabrics that can toughen up that pretty girl look. A key look is to wear lace with leather. Fantastic under a leather cropped jacket or leather skirt. Also try a lace shirt with a masculine trousers and waistcoat - very feminine but with an edge.

Key Trend Accessories

There are a number of key accessories trends this season. In fact, the accessory is almost THE major trend for the season. With classic clean-cut clothes, you can do anything with your accessories to enhance your style. Here are our favourite accessory trends that will give your winter wardrobe that extra pizzazz!

Felt Hats

The 70's mood has brought these wonderful headpieces to the fore, (and what better way to keep your head warm!) found in many shapes, stick to fedoras and floppy wide brimmed hats.

Animal Accents

Last season, animal accents were used to lift neutrals, while this trend is still classic, this season, you can be a little more adventurous by teaming animal prints to add flair to brights, or to brighten head-to-toe black. Keeping your outfit simple and adding animal accents in a belt, shoes, bag or scarf is the ultimate way to sport the trend. Bright Bag

Finding the Perfect Trench

When British troops wore a modified version of Thomas Burberry's raincoat in the trenches during World War I, the iconic "Trench Coat" was born. D-rings, epaulettes and leather wrist and collar straps were added to Burberry's 1901 design to create their uniforms. Today, the Burberry trench coat remains one of fashion's most coveted pieces, especially as we move into Autumn. Princess-to-be Kate Middleton created a sell-out at Burberry last week when she was seen in one of their double-breasted khaki trench coats! The trench is the perfect coat that goes with everything and hides all figure flaws with it’s cleverly cut fabric. It is a wardrobe staple that offers timeless style and a must-have edition to your wardrobe.

It was only natural to go straight to the Burberry website and lust over the ultimate trench coat. 2011 has been quite directional for Burberry ‘s Trench with heavy detail of either python, biker leather or even gold studs across the shoulders and sleeves, but there is still the forever classic trench that will become your ultimate wardrobe staple for years to come.

Why you need it now?

The Trench defies age and era, looking as fabulous today as it did when Audrey Hepburn wore one in Breakfast At Tiffany's. Lightweight, weather resistant and eternally chic (look at Kate Moss and Angelina Jolie), this season the look is cropped just above the knee and in punchy bright shades.

What to look for in the perfect trench

The basic style of the Trench is classic, so be sure not to deviate too much. Look for it in lightweight wool, gabardine or cotton mix canvas. Reinforced stitching, metal fasteners covered in leather, quality lining and tortoiseshell buttons are all signs of quality. Knee-length is chic and classic but why not experiment with the short-cropped style. And while black, cream and taupe are hard to beat, purple, crimson or blue are very now (just add ankle socks and heels a la model of the moment Agyness Deyn). If your budget allows, a Burberry trench will last a lifetime.

Style tips to suit you

1. Avoid bulky fabric and shapes and ensure the cut follows the line of your body without being too tight. It should also cinch in at the waist then drape into a subtle A-line at the hem. If you are short in the waist, wear your belt low to elongate the torso

2. Those with narrow shoulders or wide hips should look for traditional trench features, such as epaulettes and large lapels, to help balance out their shape

3. Hemlines should finish on or just above-the-knee. Trenches that sit mid-calf length are best left for the clothes horses they’re modeled on. The fabric will drown you and make you appear larger, and unfortunately shorter.

4. Too much detail on a trench can give the illusion of extra weight. Petite women should keep details simple, avoiding voluminous cuts and big lapels and epaulettes.

5. Double-breasted coats, with the extra row of buttons, can create the impression of width so are best avoided by fuller-figured women especially with larger busts.

6. For ease of movement, the coat should have a fantail pleat; an inverted pleat at the center back.

7. A leather trench coat may make a dramatic fashion statement but steer clear if wanting to wear it often in the rain. A cotton blend will suffer less.

8. To get a truly stylish look, turn up the collar slightly, scrunch up the sleeves and knot the belt rather than use the buckle.

9. Or to wear it open, tie the belt at the back with the buckle hanging loose.

Trench coats in neutrals can be found at Witchery with a khaki longer trench this season in medium weight stretch fabric. Plus, Sambag has a well-priced classic trench in stone or black for only $190. For a splash of colour, Sportscraft offer a shorter blue trench that will work well with denim.

Choosing the right Jeans for your body shape

At CHIC in the City, we are constantly asked "What jeans would look best on my body?". So much so, we are offering a personal stylist shopping experience just around buying the perfect jeans! While jeans are the ultimate wardrobe staple, there are so many cuts and styles to choose from, many of us can get lost in a pile of denim without knowing what really works for our style and body type. There are seven main styles of jeans that work for various body shapes - bootcut, skinny, high-rise, flare, boyfriends, straight and trouser styles to name a few...here are some tips to help you...

Bootcut

A forever stylish, universally flattering style named for its slight flare.

Ideal For - Pear, Fuller Figure and Hourglass body types as it balances out the curves with the slightly wider hem opening. When worn with a heel, it also gives the illusion of longer legs.

How To Wear Them: Lengthen the leg with sky-high statement heels and balance your silhouette with strong shoulders...think fitted evening blazer.

Skinny

Sprayed-on or slouchy, this style skims the calf and ankle accentuating your legs.

Ideal For: Petite and Hourglass body types as it helps emphasize curves and lengthen legs.

How To Wear Them: Great for that Rock Chic look so pair with tough extras, like a loose cotton tee, leather biker jacket and studded belt.

High-Rise
A rise of 9 inches or more, meant to hit at or slightly above the natural waist.

Ideal For: Straight/Rectangle body shapes as it gives the illusion of curves and movement.

How To Wear Them: Channel ‘70s cool while emphasising the waist and lengthening the legs. Go for soft silk blouses (Equipment is the perfect shirt label), platform wedges and a thin leather belt.

Flare

Fitted from the waist/hip to thigh, growing gradually wider below the knee to the ankle. (For the brave!)

Ideal For: Rectangle and inverted triangles, as it balances out the hips and shoulders.

How to Wear Them: Think Studio 54! Have fun with flares, but this is your statement piece, keep things simple with a basic singlet or knit worn on top and no-fuss jewellery to keep the silhouette simple with the movement of the flare the focus.

Boyfriend
Loose-fit denim designed to be worn low on the hips, in a slouchy style. These can be rolled up or left long

Ideal For: Rectangle body shape as it helps cover up legs that may be less than curvaceous! The boyfriend shape is another comfortable style to wear as this fit does not grip the thigh and legs and therefore ideal for the curvy and fuller Figure. It can elongate the legs on an averaged height girl but be careful on petite figures it can make you appear shorter.

How to Wear Them: As this is a boyish look, add preppy pieces giving polish to a slouchy style. Pair with a striped tee, a long-line cardi, a cross-shoulder messenger bag or tote and a cute pair of ballet flats, finish the look with a pair of wayfarer sunnies – Cute!

Straight/Cigarette

A classic look where the lower leg falls straight from the knee.

Ideal for: Rectangle and Petite body types as it flatters the natural proportions of each body type

How to Wear Them: Add some shape to these simply flattering jeans. With a chic pair of fitted leather boots, and a cute little fur vest to add some shape to your silhouette.

Trouser

Denim with tailoring and details like that of a dress pant.

Ideal for: the Pear and Fuller Figure, It can help elongate the legs with its detailed tailoring

How to Wear Them: Keep your look classic and tailored, pairing them with heels and a beautifully fitted blazer, add a printed silk scarf to add colour and to lift your look.

Other tips to consider:

Have two pairs of jeans as a minimum - one pair altered to work with your high heels and another that is at the correct length for your flat shoes.
If you are a curvy girl, avoid details such as studs, buttoned pockets or sparkles around the bottom area as this only draws attention to your trouble spots and go for a darker shade jean to create a more slimming look.
When buying jeans, make sure they fit you snuggly, looking almost too tight, usually about half a size too small as most jeans will have some stretch in them once you wear them.
Another important tip is to hang dry rather than tumble dry your jeans - tumble dryers have unfavourable effects on denim that has as little as 1% stretch. The heat first causes the lycra to contract (which is why our jeans feel tight after we have washed them), and then subsequently lose its elasticity completely (causing them to "grow"). If you have tumble dried your jeans, their fit will never be the same again.

2011 Ultimate Colours

2011 is here and with it a number of fresh and exciting trends that we can use to add to our wardrobes for some needed zest. Gone are the nudes and pale shades. Honeysuckle; Coral Rose; Peapod; Beeswax; Silver Peony; Russet; Regatta; Blue Curacao; Lavender; Silver Cloud.

According to Pantone, Honeysuckle is the 2011 Colour of the Year, calling it:

“Courageous. Confident. Vital. A brave new color, for a brave new world. Let the bold spirit of Honeysuckle infuse you, lift you and carry you through the year. It’s a color for every day – with nothing “everyday” about it.”

Honeysuckle always works with the standard basics of black, navy, charcoal or light to mid gray. But using complementary bronze-like greens like Willow PANTONE 16-0632 and/or Tapenade PANTONE 18-0840 adds a new sophistication to the combination that showcases the energy of Honeysuckle. The green tones can be really interesting in accessories for Honeysuckle tights and top. Another great and unique combination is Honeysuckle with a pinkish brown like Apricot Brandy PANTONE 17-1540. 2011 CHIC Fashion Forecast

MINIMALISM

The trend for pared-back, minimalist looks pioneered by the British fashion pack during their spring-summer 2011 collections last October will continue to be a fashion favourite in 2011.

Hannah MacGibbon for Chloe, Phoebe Philo for Celine and Stella McCartney opted to show clean, restrained clothing with few prints and little embellishment - a look that will dominate 2011 wardrobes.

Minimalist favourites will include neat swing coats, tailored pleat-front trousers, cigarette pants, unfussy A-line skirts, cotton wrap dresses, crisp cotton shirts, neat tunics, slim-fitting pencil skirts and man-style jackets and vests.

BOLD COLOURS

The great colours mentioned in Pantone’s top 10 colours of 2011 will be big this season. Yellow, lime green, aqua, persimmon, crimson, violet are the new bold colours – gone are the elegant neutrals. These colours are vibrant and versatile – Don’t be shy. Team with softer shades like nude, white or even black basics. A neon lace skirt with a cropped white shirt would look refined and confident. If you are a little shy, then look to introduce these colours into your accessories – replace your red shoes with a bright blue one or your brown lippy with a vibrant red one. Add some spark to your outfits with accent colours that say, “Confidence”!

70’s SENSIBILITY

It’s all about Studio 54! - think high-waisted flares, second-skin Missoni-style knits, maxi skirts, platforms and jumpsuits. This year Anna Sui’s collection ditched the disco look and went for '70s folk, including crocheted granny-square cardigans and ponchos worn over smocks and maxi dresses in an assortment of paisleys and florals. Take your inspiration from Mitchell, Lauren Hutton and Charlotte Rampling circa 1970 and you'll be on the money.

LEATHER

While leather jackets have been a wardrobe staple for men and women for decades, in 2011 our love affair with leather will reach a whole new level. 2011 it is set to hit fever pitch with soft leathers being fashioned into all kinds of garments, from skirts and shorts to tops and dresses.

THE RETRO LADY

Think Mad Men on steroids! Vintage, ladylike looks that show off a woman’s curves will take their inspiration mostly from the 1940s and '50s. Channel the secretaries and housewives of Mad Men - think wiggle dresses, tight-fitting pencil skirts, sweaters, circle skirts and the women of Coney Island circa 1950, all neat sundresses, buttoned-up shirts and capri pants. It's a fun mix of housewife chic and ladylike glamour.

MIXING UP TEXTURES

New Year, New You! Handy Tips on doing your own Wardrobe Detox…

The New Year is often a time of resolutions on health, love and money, but there are other ways to restart fresh, new life into yourself for 2011 that doesn’t involve measuring your waistline. It does however involve a Detox...of your wardrobe!
Now is the time to get into those dark and dingy edges of your wardrobe and really think about each item of clothing you own. A cluttered wardrobe equals a cluttered mind - and a ruthless overhaul can give new energy to your style.

They have a fabulous postage service where for $5.50 you can post your items to them to dye and they will post them back all done! A great way to revamp items and get them working for your skin tones.

Have your wardrobe sorted by the season – Winter/Autumn

Use uniform hangers

• Shaped wooden hangers for jackets and coats to maintain their shape

• Heavy plastic hangers for shirts

• Plastic suit hangers for pants and skirts

• Padded hangers for silk or delicate shirts/cardigans

• Not a wire hanger in sight!

Use boxes

• Put things that lose their shape easily into boxes e.g. jersey knit dresses, bias cuts, long delicate dresses, vintage pieces, tops with beading.

• Sweaters folded by colour in a box or on shelf visible

Underpants, socks, and tights

• Put into drawer dividers – available at Ikea

Bras, silky things, and foundations

• Folded in their own drawer with a nice lavender sachet

Shoes/Boots

• Sort by season and only have that season in your wardrobe

Belts/Sunglasses

• In their cases (or in Ziploc sandwich bags)

Silk Scarves and shawls, hats, gloves

• Each group has its own plastic box

Jewellery

• Every girl has their own system for this – however you decide to sort, ensure that you find a way to centralise everything so you can see what options you have

• Ruthlessly clean out your box – organise only what you wear most and what’s relevant now

• Store keepsakes and sentimental things elsewhere

Storage

• For any clothes that are not in season, store them away. Hang them on appropriate hangers, have them cleaned and in garment bags that breathe.

By reviewing what you have in your wardrobe may give you some inspiration to style items of clothing together that you would not have otherwise thought. This is where a stylist comes into play, stylists can look at items and immediately see options that work together that in most cases you wouldn’t have thought of. Adding belts, shoes, scarves and accessories can create an entirely new look!

‘Frocking up’ for your Christmas parties

Christmas party season is here again and along with it the hours spent trying to work out what to wear! To help you through, I have put together my top tips to your ultimate Christmas party outfit:

1. Wear a dress: this season is all about the dress and perfectly,, they’re in stores in all styles; body-con minis, flowing floor-length, classic wrap-dresses and shifts to name a few. Go for bright colours, prints or even a little bit of bling embellishment that really exudes party! The LBD (Little Black Dress) is always a safe bet too, but you most likely wear black each day to work, so try to steer away from it if you can. Choose a style that suits you and most importantly you most feel comfortable in. I'm loving this glamour dress from Paul and Joe; there's also great dresses in our favourite frock store Sami & Sita.

2. Statement Heels: You’ve got the fabulous dress, so pair it with the ultimate in heels! You have to be blind not to see the fabulous shoes galore in stores at the moment. You have the choice of bright colours, Sparkle, Platform, Patent or Metallic! Strappy are ultra hot this summer too, and will look great with your tanned, pedicured toes! Remember: If you haven’t gone over-the-top with your dress, then you can with your shoes – but don’t do both! I could shop shoes all day; but for a more focused approach visit Gary Castles, Sambag and even just to dream, visit the brand new Christian Louboutin store in Westfield Sydney!

3. The Clutch bag: You want a clutch bag for parties. Look for a chic bag that is ready to have fun. Go for sequins, lurex, glomesh or patent. Go for a bright colour, a chain handle or a mad print. The oversize clutch is great for day but for evening smaller is better.

Be adventurous with accessories when you can’t be with clothes. Think outside the square and keep away from black! Think of silver or gold as neutral colours that will go with most outfits. 4. Jewels: Go all out and have fun with jewellery; think big chunky necklaces, huge sparkling rings and enormous bangles and cuffs stacked up your wrist. Both silver and gold are in fashion at the moment with jewels of all colours and remember to make a statement with them. But don’t wear them all at once. Keep the focus on one area. The Art of Buying Vintage Clothing, by Jessica Guthrie, Coco Repose

In the past few years, vintage fashion has gone from the province of artists and alternative musicians to the preferred mode of society ladies, young professionals and celebrities. Julia Roberts wore a vintage Valentino dress to the Oscars and since then, the world of vintage was reborn.

As more retail stores add vintage clothes to their inventory, it's no longer necessary to rifle through the racks of the local thrift store to find that one-of-a-kind item. The trick today is mixing your every day wardrobe with elements of vintage to create your own unique style.

Here are 8 tips on how to wisely buy and look after your Vintage Clothing:

Tip #1 - Look at mainstream fashion trends

A few seasons ago the maxi dress was ‘new and exciting’ and is still in fashion this summer, but how special when you can find a vintage maxi dress in a different print to what everyone else it is wearing?

Right now, the power shoulder is strong in blazers, so I tend to go for a 1940’s blazer still with a strong shoulder but steering away from the 1980’s look to a more refined 1940’s elegance.

Showing up on catwalks now is a 1950’s revival of full skirts and pretty prints, so I would be looking to buy yourself an original 50’s print whether it be a skirt or dress..

Tip #2 - Your alterations person is your best friend when buying vintage.

For me, being tall and having a rather large rib cage means that a lot of vintage pieces don’t neccessarily fit, so don’t discount anything that is too big, have them altered to fit your body shape exactly.

Tip #3 – Buy what catches your eye and makes you feel comfortable - I do a lot of vintage fairs and in these environments and even vintage shops, it is hard not to feel overwhelmed by all the amazing pieces that are so different from today’s. But, I guarantee that if you stick by the simple advice of buying what catches your eye, and fits you well, or knowing what could be done to achieve this. I know from experience that when you take a piece home and put it into your modern wardrobe and wear alongside your modern pieces this is when it comes to life and seems so much more special than sitting on a rack of vintage clothing. If you are new to buying Vintage, then so what I started out doing - admire a vintage piece on a mannequin in your house, or wear a vintage piece of jewellery or handbag, or vintage silk scarf around your neck or handbag. It doesn’t have to be a whole outfit.

Tip #4 – Know your own measurements

Many customers look for sizes in the garments themselves, but remember these are handmade one off pieces that are not mass produced and therefore no sizing label. Even if the piece does have a size guide, we are generally 2 sizes larger today so it is best if you know your waist measurement or ask the assistant to give you a guide before trying on.

Many vintage customers carry a tape measure with them to measure the waist before trying or another good tip is to measure the waist seam around your neck as a rough guide to see whether it would be a possibility for you. The idea of this is that if you are relatively in proportion through the waist that your neck size should be roughly a quarter of the waist seam. Hold the dress at the side seams of the waist and place them around your neck. If the seams meet at the centre back then it is worth trying on because chances are it is your size. If the seams won’t come close to meeting at your neck, it is too small. And if you have extra, it may be bigger on you but still worth trying on depending on how you like your dress to fit.

Tip #5 – How to wash your Vintage clothing

Don’t discount buying lighter coloured garments with rust spots my most treasured secret is Napisan but you need to know the correct way to use it. You need a sunny day first and foremost. Then pour some Napisan into scolding hot water in your bathtub to dissolve and then once dissolved to make the temp of the bath just lukewarm, not hot. Soak your dress in the bath for ½ hour or so, it will still have some of the stains but don’t despair, this is the trick you need to know. Place your dress flat on a towel or table outside with the stains in the direct sunlight and walk away. Come back when it is dry and 9 times our of 10 the stains have completely gone. It is about the active ingredient reacting with sunlight for this to happen.

I can recommend a good drycleaner, ‘No D-lay’ in Darling Street, Rozelle who deals with vintage clothing. But also remember that unless extremely fragile in which case these pieces probably shouldn’t be worn, try a bath of lukewarm water and just laying your dress in the bath and then without wringing on a hanger and outside to drip dry. Most pieces can be ironed on a low setting.

Tip #6 – Zippers & Overlocking

A great way to determine the date of a vintage piece is by where it is positioned. 1940’s side seam and back neck, 1950’s CB metal, and 1960’s onwards mass produced nylon zips. If you have a metal zipper that is stiff and catching, rather than replacing a little trick is to rub a candle along the metal zipper teeth and the wax should free the zipper movement, this also works with running a graphite pencil along the teeth.

A lot of pieces are redesigned copies from later era’s passed off as originals... for example in the 1980’s a lot of design inspiration was used from the 1950’s and often unaware buyers and sometimes sellers are selling 80’s pieces as 50’s because they look from this era. A simple piece of advice is to check the inside seams for overlocking. Overlocking came in from the 1960’s/1970’s when mass production began and so if a seller is selling a piece stating it is 50’s but has overlocking and a nylon zipper it is usually a good indication that it is actually a later era. However just to confuse, sometimes metal zippers do get replaced and alterations have taken place where overlocking has been added to the seams.

Tip #7 - Larger sizes

Despite what many people think, not all vintage clothing is small sizing. A lot of it is, but I particularly source all sizes but the reality is that the larger sizes go quicker because as we are generally larger in sizing today than the past era’s, so this brings me to...

Tip #8 - My best piece of advice is ‘if you love the piece, and it fits, buy it!’

Even if you don’t have the occasion in your mind, you will find it, and let’s face it, they are not going out of fashion, they are classic pieces that have stood the test of time! I see too many customers um and ah over a piece they love which in mainstream fashion is ok because you can always re-order your size or go to the next store for the version of, but guaranteed that you walk away to ponder over a coffee and the next person who walks through the door loves it as much as you but purchases it! I have learnt my lesson as this has happened to me many times, and I am forever searching for that same piece that does not exist except for the girl in the next suburb wearing ‘my special find!’

The Top 10 Frocks that changed the world!

The Observatory Hotel invited CHIC to present a series of Master Classes on ‘The Top Ten Frocks that changed the world’ at their Night of Luxury Frock Star event in June. Here is a short version of this Master Class.

Choosing which ten dresses changed the world was no mean feat. From 1920’s-now, there have been more than 50 dresses that we could have picked. Our selection criteria ended up being based on three key qualities:

1) timeless

2) created a significant trend/following

3) memorable

Each dress we chose had it’s own unique merits as well as these three qualities.

Dress No. 1 - 1930 – VIONNET

The 1920 & 30’s were dominated by female designers, such as Chanel, Jeanne Lanvin and Elsa Schiaparelli, focusing on Madeleine Vionnet for this era. Madeleine Vionnet’s Grecian dress is as an example of the freedom women looked for in a dress. No corset or boning, the real body was draped and allowed to move. Vionnet also established the BIAS CUT. This allows the fabric to stretch, to flow around the body but not mould it. This bias cut remains in many garments today so this design was considered timeless.

The following two designers and their dresses were introduced in 1947 but then influenced the shape and themes of the 50’s. It also re-established Paris as the centre of fashion.

Dress No. 2 - 1947 – DIOR

The mend and make do era of clothing ended in 1947 with the launch of Dior’s New Look, so called because of a Harpers’ Bazaar journalist response. ‘It’s such a new look’ With soft shoulders, waspy waist and metres of beautiful fabric, it gave the world a new Optimism and Freshness.

It was not initially welcomed by the press or governments who were concerned about the amount of fabrics, but who can tell a woman what to wear?

Dress No 3 - 1954 – CHANEL

Seeing Dior’s success brought Chanel back from exile in Switzerland and re-launched her label in 1954 (she was 71) although not technically a dress, it was a revolution in women’s dressing. The tailoring was soft and elegant and without corsetry, which Chanel was concerned was returning in the Dior look. The Americans were her greatest supporters in this era and saw the versatility of the working world in a Chanel garment. They took the suit to boardrooms and out to lunch.

Dress No. 4 - 1961 – GIVENCHY

The Little Black Dress (LBD) was started by Chanel but we have to honour Givency and Breakfast at Tiffany’s for the most everlasting, desirable image of a LBD. It was recently voted the most memorable screen dress.

What does a LBD do for a woman? It can be long or short and still be successful. It’s respectable, versatile, slimming and elegant, mostly it’s completely reliable. If a man in Black Tie is James Bond then a women in a LBD is Audrey.

Dress No 5 - 1965 - MARY QUANT – THE MINI

Mary Quant was a London boutique owner, who took ideas and made them appealing to the fashion hungry youth of London. She was inspired by Correges and Balaciaga’s modern cuts and tunic shapes, where the tailoring was determined from the shoulders, thus taking the emphasis of the waist. This allowed Quant to shorten the hem without affecting the structure of the dress.

In 1965 she put her Mini’s (named after her favourite car) in her ‘Bazaar’ store windows. The 60’s look was now ready for consumption. Interesting to note the mini has innocence to it. The neckline is high, the detailing is feminine. This was for the for young women who were coming into economic power. Initially expensive, it was extensively copied and made at home, creating the first mass fashion revolution.

Dress No 6 - 1973– HALTERNECK DRESS – HALSTON

“You are only as good as the people you dress” Halston

The Hippie era was coming to an end and Halston, and American millinery designer (he designed Jackie Kennedy’s pillbox hat) was one of the first big American designers. His look was clean but sexy and elegant with a hint of the optimistic American.

His style featured block colours, shirt dresses; floating silk jerseys and the use of a spiralling bias cut (think Vionnet). Initially he styled stars, and gave Liza Minelli her signature tunic and pants look, for Halston loved dressing famous people. Halston slinky dresses were perfect for Studio 54, the disco of the ear, for jet setting to Europe (perfect for packing) but were also not sizist. His mu-mus and tunics were popular with the larger celebrities. Today the revival line is called Halston Heritage and can be seen in Sex in the City 2.

Dress No 7 - 1983 – DYNASTY - NOLAN MILLER

These images of Alexis (Joan Collins) and Crystal (Linda Evans) epitomise the Glamour, the Grandness and the Glitter of the 80’s. This is the era of the Bitch, the powerful woman in control who can fight for what she wants. No shoulder was too big, no sequin too much. The 80’s was Bling (if only that word was around then!). Nolan Miller, the show’s designer, launched a line of clothing. The use of celebrity and media to further a fashion style is now an established route.

Dress no 8 - 1994 – VERSACE – SAFETY PIN DRESS

Known as the Greatest Red Carpet Dress, Elizabeth Hurley (29) was the guest of Hugh Grant for Four Weddings and Funeral launch (that’s him in the background). Notice her grooming, it’s not harsh, it’s natural and approachable, a girl next door in a killer dress. This dress heralds the age of the Celebrity Dress and how to ignite a career

Dress No. 9 - 2001 – JULIA ROBERTS – VINTAGE VALENTINO

The dress is from 1982 by Valentino. It caused a sensation. The gown was so perfect, so Hollywood and elegant, but wasn’t fresh from the collections, because it was Vintage, a term not heard of before. It gave the dress an edge of exclusivity and Julia Roberts an Oscar. Vintage is now a legitimate fashion choice and has created an alternative to boutique shopping with the rise of the Vintage Boutique. This dress can be seen at The Queensland Art Gallery’s exhibition on Valentino.

No. 10 - 2005 - GALAXY DRESS – ROLAND MOURET

Some dresses are not necessarily original to the eye, but hit a fashion need, clean sweeping all styles around it and making them redundant. This is a reminder of how much we love dresses. Technically the dress is understated, but it does everything we need it to do. It’s flattering; it shows off the curves, it’s neither too old nor too young. It’s really a perfect dress and thus became the most copied dress of the 'Noughties'.

As you can see, all of the dresses made a statement in fashion. They could all be worn today with grace and style so depict a sense of timelessness. What top ten dresses will change this century, we wonder?

Choosing the right swimsuit for you!

Now that the summer has finally decided to arrive with its brilliance, so has the angst that we once again need to look fabulous in that bikini/swimsuit. But there’s no need for it. You really can find the perfect swimsuit to flatter your figure if you just understand a few style tips depending on your body shape. Each one of us has those trouble spots we try to deal with, so here are a few tips for finding that perfect swimsuit for you…

Small Bust Look for tops with a touch of padding, or an underwire, demi-bra style that makes the most of a beautiful dainty bust-line. Try to find a top with adjustable straps at shoulders and around back so you can tighten and adjust things to help fill out the top. You can also wear those frilly tops that are in right now, so go for it, and as for those bandeau tops, only you can wear those as well. Remember to avoid tops with too much fabric or have a poor fit, they can drown you and make your bust look even smaller.

Larger Bust Always go for a swimsuit with extra support - underwire tops work well and look great. Halter tops, show off that sexy cleavage and can offer support too! Avoid tiny tri-tops and those bandeau tops that offer minimal coverage. Opt for separate tops and bottoms so you can get the perfect fit.

Short Legs or Torso

Play up your figure by finding a suit that is cut high on the thigh, making your leg look much longer. If your concerned about your curvy hips, all the better. This cut will accentuate your smaller waist giving you a much flirtier look. Another trick is to wear a solid bikini bottom (colour) with a printed top. This immediately draws the eye up and makes your body look longer. Then of course a solid, one-piece suit with a plunging neckline creates a continually long appearance and is drop dead sexy to boot! Avoid boy shorts as they will only draw the eye downward and can make you look shorter.

Long Body Shape Clothes fall beautifully on you and your legs go on and on, but you need to make sure that you do not look like a beanpole at the beach. Go for wild embellishments at the hips and bustline to break your body in half, think bows, rings, jewels. Try horizontal stripes and bright colours. Those cut-out one pieces are also perfect for you.

Wide Shoulders Here you want to play up your bottom half and minimize the top. Wear bikini bottoms that have lots of colour, print or embellishments. Tops with square, halter and even some wide-strapped necklines look fantastic on you. Avoid the “V” silhouette by staying away from those plunging necklines and teeny, tiny bikini bottoms.

Tummy Conscious

If you’re feeling self-conscious about your tummy try one of those fabulous tummy control panel swimsuits, they really work wonders! A one-piece with draping or ruching around the waist or hips can also help to conceal and detract from your problem areas.

Heavier Bottom Keep your bikini bottom simple and chic, with wider sides for super style! Make for a solid bottom and a printed top for the best effect. Also, a one-piece with either a square neck or wide-straps will help to balance out your silhouette. Remember, playing up your top half with de-emphasise your bottom half. Avoid boy-shorts, too skimpy bottoms or lots of ruffles and details at the hip. A sheer wrap can also be invaluable to cover-up yet create shape around your lower half.

Just remember balance is the key. The human eye loves symmetry. Secondly, if you feel confident and happy within yourself, you’ll look amazing as you relax on the beach or by the pool no matter what! Finally, find something that is in your colours and that you feel comfortable in!

Boyfriend's Wardrobe Detox - The Essential Man's Wardrobe

CHIC's in-house fashion reporter, Natasha Pitra went underground in the name of research to check out her boyfriend’s wardrobe…here’s what she reveals...

Take one look at my boyfriend's wardrobe and you will see off white shirts, jeans older than five years, woolly jumpers, out-of-date loafers…need I say any more! The sight of this wardrobe makes me cringe and ask the question -"Am I alone in my pursuit for turning my man into a more stylish character?".

So, I thought I would come up with some basic wardrobe essentials and styling tips to get him on the right road in my pursuit to bring back the 'dapper' in my man!

The Essential Man's Wardrobe – The foundation

Whatever the item, it should be made of fine quality fabrics and materials. Quality is the true economy of style for a man's wardrobe.
It should be carefully constructed, with attention on detailing such as buttons, stitching and style.
Should fit as perfectly as possible.
Be clean, in good repair and stored correctly.

White dress shirt - Sharp and versatile; a man should have at least four different shirts. Simple colours will go with everything then add variety with the details, self patterned fabrics, cuffs or collars.

Tailor made suit -One good suit and you can take your man anywhere. A bespoke suit will cost as much as a good Italian brand, but with a cut and fall James Bond would be proud. Here’s our local favourite tailor. www.suit-shop.com

One black pair and one brown pair of shoes as a minimum – Black cap-toe oxford lace-ups, in calfskin. These will get you through the day as well as night. One pair of brown, fine-cut wing-tips.

This season's tie in block colours - Try Turquoise, as voted by Pantone as the Colour of 2010.

A dark pair of jeans - a staple of anyone’s wardrobe. Make sure they are crisp and able to be worn with a T-shirt, button down, or suit jacket.

White, grey and black T-shirts – sleep in them, wear them to the gym, or use them underneath a shirt. Never hold onto a loose or worn t-shirt.

Final words of advice: start simple and expand according to lifestyle. Classics don't mean boring. To get you started try shopping at Armani Exchange or Herringbone for some great quality basics.

Vintage Fashion is trend driven just like contemporary fashion but with an extra addition. Vintage has an emotional and historical quality. Knowing what you are buying and recognising quality vintage ensures that you have a timeless investment that creates uniqueness in your wardrobe.

On our last Vintage Express Shopping Tour, our group discovered that current trends are represented in vintage stores and how to be discerning when making that purchase decision.

Revealed to you exclusively, here are the key trends we went hunting for...

Utility Chic - key colours - Khaki & Olive. Black is on pause this season. Most of us have enough black but never knew where to turn for alternatives. Look for trousers (another key trend), pair this colour with denim, layer your olives and khakis together with whites and always use a scarf to soften the look. Look for this colour in any way..from shoes to bags.

Jackets, tailored & waisted to perfection - We love 1940's jackets with exquisite detailing, a single button closure, in worsted wools in burgundy and navy. The blazer has made it's comeback and is a strong piece for winter, so try and lookout for one with ultra feminine tailoring.

Vintage Cardigans – We can thank Michelle Obama for glamorising the cardigan. Our advice is to go vintage as they often have unique detailing, silky linings and cute buttons. Avoid anything too baggy and look for a skinny arm, much more flattering.

Jodphurs - trousers are big this season but if you can find 'English Patient' style jodphurs you score the vintage trophy.

Floral dress a la Mad Men- we just can't get enough of these flower bomb dresses. Modernise with new heels, clutches and trench coats. Thanks to Betty Draper from Mad Men

Glitz and glamour – there is no better way to lift the winter blues than to add a bit of sparkle to your wardrobe. Vintage sparkly jackets from 80's to 70's tops with butterfly motifs are the perfect complement to your winter wardrobe. Calm the shine down by mixing with denim.

Fur minibits - we are all for re-cycling and this includes fur. Anna Wintour has inspired us on this trend. Look for shoulder covering jackets or small pieces for use as fur collars.

The one-off accessory – the best way to wet your feet into vintage shopping. Pick out statement necklaces, bangles galore and the return of the gold Chanel clip earring.

Trick: feel inside a bag or shoe, check the lining is intact, the leather is soft and the if the label says Made in Italy or France, you're good to go.

Update - Looking at the upcoming collections for Marc Jacobs (Winter 2011) the full skirt in an A-Line to 50’s fullness is making it’s way back, match with strong shouldered jackets and you will be ahead of the trend for this winter.
