Graffitis: Art or Trash? What's your take?

I was really upset when I saw in the news that some of my hometown's lovely murals had been vandalized. A while back, my town decided to hire art students to paint murals on the walls of some downtown buildings representing various historic aspects of the town. They are beautiful and very well done. But some people went and spray painted some red squiggly lines over them... nothing to be proud of!!! Nothing artistic... just trash.

Normally, I'm all for graffitis when they are well thought out or simply beautiful. I consider graffitis urban design. Similar to what I do except on a large scale and with a different canvas. I really enjoy the kind that incorporates the environment into their art. In montreal, we have a pretty well known artist, Roadsworth, he mainly uses street, parking, crossing lines and creates some fun concepts! It really brightens the city and doesn't hinder anyone.

It is the season to be merry!!! I was out walking this weekend and many families (more precisely dads!) where out putting up xmas decorations like lights or those blowup santas and snowmans!!! It was rather pretty! It made me remember as a child how much I used to love the decorating family activities. In my household it was my aunt and my mom who mostly decorated. What about your family who decorates, and who is in charge of deciding what goes where? All this seasonal decorating got me thinking that if our streets are all decked out, our web should be as well!!! What does a freelance graphic designer do on her off time?

She creates more work!!!

Like curing a friend's sad business card from the microsoft word illness...
revamping old store logos for the fun of it... designing her own xmas wrapping paper / gift cards, and so forth!!!

I swear, I am not a workholic!!! I just love design and find many, if not all, of it's aspect fascinating. My latest interest is animation.
I've been following Shorts of the week for a little over a year now and the animations are just so wonderful and impressive.
One of my favourites is "The Thomas Beale Cipher" animation by Andrew S Allen, the collage look and all the textures are simply amazing!!!
The movement is also incredible, you really get the sense of being in a moving train car with rocking of the whole screen.

So, I decided to improve my very limited animation skills. I have basic knowledge of animation but never went full out and attempted to create a short movie. Thus, I called up one of my writer friends and begged for a short story or even some flash fiction and he gave me the intro to his, in the works, new book: one page of typed urban fantasy deliciousness!!!

It's probably going to take me forever to complete but the challenge is an interesting one... hopefully it will turn out decent!

Here's my game plan:

+ Step 1

Read an analyse the text. Get the general feel for the story and choose an art style. Pin point the different landscapes and locations. List all the actions. ~ Completed, I decided to work with a film noir ambiance with a lot of shadow play. As for the art style I will use a mixture of line art and paint smudges for the background and texture filled silhouette art for the character.

+ Step 2

Draw up a storyboard, decide on scenes ~ tried doing this, realized I have nowhere enough knowledge or examples. So it's research time and watching movie time while keeping a close eye on camera angles and how a scene works to create emotion.

+ Step 3

Character design. ~ I've been drawing up characters all week and I'm still not quite satisfied. I have very little physical description from the text and my author friend refuses to give me more info ;-) I think he's waiting to see what I come up with to finalize his character!

+ Step 4

Draw/paint the sceneries

+ Step 5

Draw the character in every imaginable position I might need. Find and scan textures.

+ Step 6

Open up flash and begin to animate

+ Step 7

Record and play around with my own sound effects. ~ I can't wait to do this part!

+ Step 8

Revise, rework, redo everything!!! Repeat!!!

Out of my comfort zone

I rarely get the chance to create a blog design for a man, mainly due to my drawing style that is rather feminine... so when Benjamin emailed me I jumped on the occasion. He's a fellow artist and creates wonderful urban sketches and watercolors. I really wanted to help him out and show off his work at its best. In order to do so, I began by creating a logo that would represent his art and also act as his own brand. I had fun creating several samples of these for Benjamin. I took out my markers, pens, and exactos and basically just played around with sketches of my own and several methods of creating a grunge look with various scratches (I even used a fork for rubbing off the top layer of ink!!!). As much as I love creating vector art on the computer it's also fun to get my hands drily with more traditional art methods!!!

Next, came the actual design, I really wanted to create more of a portfolio look rather than a traditional blog look. So, I used a script to create automatic post summaries for the main page, which creates little vignettes of Benjamin's art ... similar in a sense to my own design here (although I use a different method). Next, I really wanted to use the header area as a main showcase section ... so I figured out an easy method to use the blogger image upload feature in a slightly different way... it basically uploads a new image underneath the header image so Benjamin can change the header artwork anytime he wishes and still have the wonderful grunge border effect I created!

Another difficulty I had with this design was to create a grunge look that isn't too grungy. It was actually quite hard not to go overboard!!! At some point I was just having so much fun creating effects with splatters, rusts and various other photoshop brushes! :-)

Benjamin also sells his art so go over and check it out, you may find something you'll love to put up on your wall or as gift for a friend, colleague or family!

A cooking premade design

I fell in love with Emma Rios' illustration work. I absolutely love the mix of handmade and photography. Since, I lack talent with photography, I decided to re-create the same kind of look with detailed vector art. I specially like the 3D effect filling the illustration with depth, which is something that internet tends to lacks. And, it was fun working away from the computer a bit. My hands missed my exactos and pens!!!

The result is a fun and exciting template filled with vibrant colours that entice everyone stomach!!!

My latest premade design is specially designed for the book lover!!! It has a perfect spot for displaying covers on your next to read/review list, wider posts for more content and easier reading, and a minimalist design to focus all the attention on your words.

Lately, I've been attempting to create more realistic characters, leaving the cartoony feeling behind. I've been specially focusing on body language and facial expression. This latest design, also bears the fruits of this efforts. What do you think?

On a side note, I'd like to remind everyone that if you are interested in a premade design but it not quite right you can always email to discuss modifications some I do for free like skin, hair, eye color!!!
