Highlights from my British Columbia trip - sketches

We ate freshly caught salmon YUMMY!!!

4hr bike ride through the mountains to go to my hometown - my butt seriously ached!!!

Walked around Gastown all morning and stopped to hear the clock sing it's song at noon!

Ate lunch at Robson Square before going to the art museum

Sunset at the beach with a bunch of hotties!!! HEAVEN!!!

Had dinner with a friend and his wife

Ate the best burrito ever!!!

Lost Wallet, Stolen Wallet, in any case, it's Gone!!!

Last night, I came back home after some last minute shopping for my flight, and realized I had lost my wallet. Never having gone through such a dilemma, I completely panicked and called my best friend to freak out on her. She did her bestie's job and calmed me down by walking me through the steps:

Call credit card company to report the stolen/lost card. So I did, it was really easy and fast. I guess Visa is used to this sort of thing. In respect for my trip, this did not worry me so much since I always buy a prepaid Visa card for traveling, which thankfully was sitting on my desk. -1 stress point!
Call bank to report the stolen/lost card and have it replaced. They were really nice and they even offered to have the new card sent to the nearest bank in Vancouver, in order for me to pick it up there. -5 stress points!
Figure out how to replace identity cards. That's when I remembered that they check your identity before boarding the plane. Total freak out, everything was in my wallet!!! +100 stress points! I was totally hyperventilating with my head between my knees trying to catch my breath thinking I had to cancel my highly anticipated vacation. Meanwhile, my best friend went online to figure out what to do. It turns out that you can show 2 photoless pieces of identity instead of your drivers license. Guess what I never carry in my wallet? My birth certificate and social security card. Stress levels down to zero!!!

Thus ending my pre-travel woes!!!

Top 5 Packing Tips for the Lazy & Stylish Traveler

I'm a lazy traveler, I hate waiting for suitcases to go round and round and round... I want to get from point A to B with as few hassles as possible, after all, I'm on vacation!!! Hence, my no checked bag rule! Here are my top 5 tips for packing & traveling with only a carry-on:

Roll with it!
Rolling your clothes takes up less suitcase space and minimizes wrinkles (use tissue paper). Do not waste vacation time choosing your outfits, plan ahead (where are you going, what will you be doing... what kind of clothes will you need) and roll them together! I usually roll 2-3 tops with one bottom, creating multiple outfits for 1 roll.
Shed the weight & go neutral!
Pick lighter clothes over heavy ones. Be versatile! Pack basic neutral clothing that will go with everything. Bring small accessories to liven or fancy up your outfits. I always pack tons of colorful leggings, instead of jeans, to pair with my neutral tops!
Wear your heavy & big items on the plane!
I always wear my jacket or sweater (jeans & sneakers too) on the plane, it saves room in my baggage plus it keeps me warm & comfy during the flight (planes are always set to frigid).
Forget the cute little handbag!
A large tote can fit under your plane seat and hold all your beauty essentials. *Be careful of bottle size for liquids! Check with your airline for the allowed amount.
$$$$ Money!!!
Simple, plan enough money for anything you might have forgotten or didn't bother bringing. I always budget that into my expenses. No hassles, shopping is always fun!!!

A PLANE RIDE ACROSS THE COUNTRY

While preparing my little trip to visit my relatives and friends in Vancouver, I came across these lovely pins. Isn't it the cutest little box kit ever! I totally love the illustration style of the packaging, it's fun and quirky. I totally wanna go on a road trip with my girlfriends, just to use this box!

It comes with some wonderful little travel items like a notecard and travel organizer as well as some beauty products. Nic Ohh La La wrote a nice blog entry about it, check it out !!!

DRAWING TO MAKE WORKOUTS FUN? I'M IN!!!

WOW! is what I first thought when I came across this pin, a drawing and a workout at the same time, amazing multi-tasking with interesting artistic results!!! It also made me wonder what would happen if I showed up to yoga class with ink on my feet and hands?!

I'd probably get yelled at and told to leave the class.
If somehow I managed to talk myself into remaining in class, the end artistic result would probably be a big blob of nothingness (I'm not so great at yoga!!!)
I'd need pretty heavy duty scrubbing in the shower since I'd be covered in ink (again, I'm not so great at yoga!!!)

What! Wait it's Ice Cream Day!!!

I discovered this morning that there's such a thing as a day for ice cream!!! I ♥ Twitter hashtags!!! #NationalIceCreamDay

Excited like a little kid I jumped up and down in bouncy ball fashion and then ran (ok jogged, I just don't run) to the convenient store and bought a Häagen-Dazs bar, the salted caramel ones. Yes, I totally ate it before lunch!!! But, hey I jogged there (10 minutes... it's worth an ice cream bar, right?)

Pumped up on sugar and my summer tunes, I decided to further celebrate the day by sketching a little commemorative illustration.

It's summer!!! We all know the horrors that humidity and pool/sea water can do to our hair! In order to prevent horrible hair and minimize damage, I've been testing easy summer hairstyles tutorials from youtube.

It's become quite the addiction!!! :-)

A little thanks for all of you who make great videos! I've learned a lot about hair and gained quite a few tricks.

While, watching these I doodled quite a bit and ended up creating a bunch of hair styling icons. I decided to turn them into these lovely, chic thematic graphics that you can use on your blogs and websites. – ENJOY!

Sculpture by Michel Goulet - Sherbrooke. Quebec

I walked in a new park today and I came across this urban artwork by Michel Goulet. From a far, it looks like a rest area by the lake with a bunch of chairs and stools. As you come closer you notice that they are all carved with various sayings and expressions. I didn't care for these much. They tended to be rather corny, but, the shadow and light play they created was rather beautiful and intriguing under the bright noon sun. I will visit again at sunset to witness the different shadow plays. I also loved the juxtaposition theme of everyday objects and art in such an appropriate setting! You can sit and enjoy nature's art while becoming living art yourself!!!

Good design: incorporating technology, in our daily lives, the right way

Good design isn't just about making pretty things but creating pretty things with purpose!!! It's about incorporating form and function to solve a problem. Samsung achieved this admirably with their new safety truck idea. We all got stuck behind a semi-truck... it's annoying and it can be sometimes difficult to pass them on narrow roads. Samsung made use of wireless camera technology that displays the road ahead on a screen placed on the back wall of the truck allowing drivers to see when it is safe to pass the truck. I enjoy seeing developments such as this when it comes to design and technology... this is way more useful than the myriad of annoying smartphone apps!!!

Mass media social ads and product sales: Good or Bad?

Have you seen the latest Pedigree ad?

It's a beautifully rendered artistic ad done in a nostalgic (grab you by the heart strings) black and white. It displays pets (for instance dogs) as a remedy to race issues. What are your thoughts on this kind of message? Do product selling companies cheapen social issues by using them to up sale profits. In a way of course they do! At the end of the day profits rule the world but even so

I believe social advertisements such as these are positive.

The message in this ad is a great one, so why not promote it!
It's a believable ad even with it's disney undertones. I can see 2 people, hating each other, interacting over their pets (pet love is universal and a great conversation starter!)
Ads are a huge daily part of our lives. Every time you turn your head you'll see one form or another of mass media advertisement. It shapes the way we think. We often discuss this point in a negative light like with self-esteem and beauty issues but it can also be used as positive approach! What if instead of thinking that a size zero is the norm for women we started thinking that acting friendly to everyone was the norm! A nice thought, no?! #FeedTheGood
