Yesterday, CCT conducted a Chicago Cupcake Challenge. Our seven panelists rated cupcakes (white and chocolate) from six different bakeries around Chicago on a scale of one (gag-inducing) to five (pleasure through pancreatic shock). The results were as follows.

1. Sweet Mandy B's: 4.6
2. Dinkel's: 4.1
3. Bent Fork: 3.9
4. Angel Food Bakery: 3.6
5. Phoebe's Cupcakes: 3.2
6. Alliance Bakery: 3.0

If you think you have something better, contact us.

The CTA... Chicago Transit Authority... the "L"... buses... trains... subways... a shared experience among most Chicagoans. However, did you know that those bus ads that you see everyday have a name? When the idea to advertise on the CTA buses was first proposed, I received a lesson on bus advertising. Queens, kings, headlights, taillights, fullbacks, partial wraps, full wraps, headliners, interiors... the list goes on. I was excited - I knew that as a Graphic Design Fellow for Chicago Children's Theatre I would play a key role in the creation of these advertisements. And I also knew that they would be displayed across the city, acting as a mobile billboard for CCT. I was ready for the challenge.

It's a privilege to work for a small theatre company with big ideas and dreams for the children of Chicago . Marketing our latest production, If All the World were Paper, on the CTA buses was just one of the ways that we are trying to reach the broader Chicago community. So next time you're bored sitting on the bus, look up... or when you're stuck in traffic behind a bus, check out the taillight ad - you might just see these Chicago Children's Theatre "If All the World were Paper" advertisements!

I'm Michael, the production manager for Chicago Children's Theatre. I manage all the production elements of all the shows we do. That means that the lighting, sound, scenery, projections, props, and costumes all fall in my domain, as it were. I'm responsible for contracting the designers who produce these things, making sure that they have all the tools necessary to create what is needed, supervise the construction of these elements, and manage the budgets for these departments to make sure we aren't spending too much money.

On smaller shows, such as If All the World were Paper, which is running now until November 30, or on The Selfish Giant, which opens January 18, I perform some of these designer tasks myself. I coordinated the construction of the scenery for Paper, based on drawings and photos of the original set, which is in London (and too big and expensive to ship over here). And for both Paper and Giant I designed a simple light plot. With my colleague Tim, we hung, circuited, focused the lighting instruments, and wrote the light cues. Paper has around 34 lighting instruments in the plot, and about 36 light cues, which is a lot for such a simple show.

We've been getting a lot of love from you over our new show: If All the World were Paper. The Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Stage Review both gave us glowing reviews, as did a few of you. Here's what you said about If All the World were Paper:

"I took you up on the offer of tickets to If
All the World Were Paper at the last minute. I absolutely LOVED the show. I'm a new mom with a 16 month old child. He is an active, very, very curious, high
energy little boy and I have never seen him sit still for an hour with such rapt
attention. He clearly loved the show too! Thanks very much for the introduction to the
Chicago Children's Theatre!"

"What a treat the entire day was! Thank you so much. In today's belt-tightening climate, the arts has been something that we have had to cut back on for the kids. Getting to see a show and a great one at that was wonderful. The paper puppets were a wonderful mind expander for the week before Halloween. My son's costume will be the better for it. Thanks again for such a wonderful treat. It was truly appreciated."
