One thing to keep in mind is the the importance of staying in contact with them when they are in school or out with friends. What is the proper age to let your child have a cellphone? And what is it as a parent we tend to worry about when they do have one? Imagine one day your child is home and is old enough to be on his or her own. Now if for whatever reason the plumbing in the house goes whacky, how will your child be able to contact you if there is no home phone.

I’m a parent and I have been around enough parents to understand that we all have different views on when to give our child the responsibility of a mobile phone. The line has to been drawn somewhere and the leash needs to be loosened. Some folks think the worst, but I think the best, if I need my kid to call me in case of an emergency they will have a phone.

As parents we are different how we handle our kids, and many households are different with single parents, parents that are together etc. Naturally parents always worry their children when they leave for school, or when they step out with friends. We want to stay in contact with them all the time to make sure they are ok, and nobody is bothering them. My daughter is 7 years old and knows how to use a cellphone, knows the important numbers to call when something is wrong. But I am still holding back on getting her phone due to the lack of responsibility. Plus, I am afraid she will lose it, or break it, or someone will steal it from her when she is on her school bus. Thoughts may run through my head when it comes to this subject, that is why I am holding back on the idea for now. I really think we don’t know the proper age for our children to have their own cell phone, every parent is different.

I as a parent think that 9 or 10 years old is old enough to have their own cell phone. Remember this is my opinion, there are families who have children with cell phones at 7, or 8 years old. Everyone’s situation is unique where they may have to give their children or child a phone for certain reasons. Another worry about a young cell phone user, is the content he or she is viewing when they are alone. I worry about that all the time, but guys block them out, there are tons of ways to keep young children safe from unexpected mobile content.

That is the beauty of having this modern day technology work to your advantage, we can control what they watch on their phones and tablets. We as parents will always try to do the right thing when it comes to our little ones, so whether your child has a phone or not. Charlie was diagnosed with autism when he was only 2 years old. His parents were in denial which is a natural reaction for some parents. They handle it pretty well being young parents. Charlie was nonverbal at the time when he started going to school, more one on one therapy plus speech therapy helped him when applied in schools.

Ever since Charlie was diagnosed he loved electronics whether it was phones, ipads, ipods, anything electronic fascinated him.  Also electronics calmed Charlie down when he was having a rough day, or if he tended to get mad or frustrated. Since this was something he was interested in, it calmed him down so his parents purchased him a laptop, and an ipad.

When Charlie was in school his classroom had both computers, and ipads. Since Charlie was a visual learner which meant anything he seen he learned just from viewing it.

All Charlie’s teachers, doctors, and therapists seen how much improvement he was doing with the help of having his ipad with him. Also with all the speech therapy and occupational therapy Charlie was now saying complete sentences. He would express how he was feeling when he was asked, he would ask for things or being very expressive. He went from nonverbal, to using one or two words, to making sentences and being more expressive with his parents, and the rest of his family.

Of course we need to be up to date with all of our mobile devices since everything is mobile and businesses are making that shift. So we are basically at the will of the latest and greatest technology. But can instant gratification be expensive. This is how they sell you, and then you are signing a contract with them.

We are human and it is natural to have the best in life, but sometimes the best is something that we can’t afford. We somehow always find a way to make it happen, we get what we want regardless. I guess that is just a human instinct we all have, get what you crave for. Whether you have a new phone or an old phone it’s yours and you are the only one that pays the bill. At the end of the day what other’s have to say really doesn’t matter.

We can list tons of mobile apps that have us by the neck and make it necessary for us to keep our cellphones nearby. I want to share a specific story on the emotional attachment we have to our mobile devices and how much we rely on them to function. I will use someone as an example, of course I got her permission with one condition, that she remain anonymous.

Cellphones have become more advanced, we have a variety of big phones and small phones some with more memory, some with better picture quality the list is endless. Plus, we tend to use them for many things as well. We shop on them, text, play games, use many social media platforms to stay connected with family and friends. Thousands of businesses rely on mobile devices to attract more business turning it into profit. Most of us have a new found appreciation for our cellphones to the point where without them we literally do not know how to function.

You may disagree with me, but it is possible that some individuals go insane if their cellphone breaks, or if they lose it, or even if they even simply leave it at home. It’s understandable to go crazy if you lose or break your phone, but if you know that you can order or buy another one why freak out? With an online order you would just have to be patient until it arrives in the mail, but in a store you would just have to set up everything all over again, which takes time too. Would you rather wait a couple of days, or hours for a replacement. We tend to still feel lost without our phones, and most of all disconnected from whatever is going on in the world no matter how long it takes to get replaced.

Whether it is business, social media, world news, local news, without our phones we are just disconnected from everything. I have witnessed a woman who had no kind of luck with cellphones. They would break, be defected, or she would lose them, no luck at all. The last phone she had she dropped it and shattered the screen. She had insurance which meant that she could order another one, she just had to pay additional charges, and so forth. They informed her that it would take 3-4 business days for her new phone to come.
