If it happened to her it could happen to you.

Delving into this book, I didnt think I would get much from it. I believed it would just give a basic story on a soldier and their experience once they retired. Selph is going into depth about her experience not only after she was retired and being questioned for comitting a crime unbeknownst to her, but also during her time in Irag and the position she was given. Selph gives an insight of how the CID and DOJ operate during their investigations, and makes the book hard to stop reading! It was hard to grasp at the very beginning but once you do you are hooked!

It's so inspiring to read about the great veterans that have given so much to the United States of America in order to preserve our freedom and security. It really opens your eyes as to what our veterans must go through in order to protect the American people. I will say that this book has some very graphic parts in it, and because of this it might be a little more difficult to read. I believe, however, that there are some extremely valuable concepts and lessons to be learned from this book.

I'm not usually the type to read heavy books like these, but I will have to say this was a very interesting read. This book will bring you inside the harsh yet inspiring journey of Levonda Selph. Some of the book can be disgusting to read, but many of us have something to take away from it. Highly recommended.

This book is engaging and heartbreaking. The amount of trials and tribulations this woman faced during her service and after her final tour is simply amazing and admirable. Respect is forever given.

A real eye opener.I salute the author for her openess in discussing her story.I salute you for your years of service and for taking the timeand energy to write this book detailing your experiences.

I read about Daughter of Destiny on the Internet while looking up some information on Kathryn Kuhlman. Kuhlman asked Jamie Buckingham to write her biography because she knew he would write the truth. I'm sure after some of her experiences Kuhlman also realized Buckingham would show her flaws but keep her belief in the power of the Holy Trinity at the forefront of her story. Daughter of Destiny shows Kuhlman as a flawed passionate one-of-a-kind work of art for God. Yes, she was a consummate showman but a showman for God. This was one of the most inspirational books I have read lately. All through her dark days, struggles, and waning days Kuhlman never gave up. Having said that it's not a it's all fluffy clouds, rainbows and unicorns book trying to cast Kuhlman as a plaster saint and from what Buckingham writes she would have objected to such a book.I used to watch Kuhlman's television programs with my Mom but never knew much about her. This woman like an apparition on fire would preach on the stage. Her voice was so distinctive you never forgot it once you heard it. I'm glad this book has brought her back to me in a much more meaningful way. Not that I know what she struggled through I admire her even more as she shows us we don't have to be perfect just committed.I have read some posts on the Internet claiming they feel she wore wires under her flowing dresses that shocked people or used hypnotism. I doubt this as she wouldn't have had to work so hard to bring the presence of the Holy Spirit in her waning days if she were using such devices. She also wasn't always touching the person as they were "slain" or healed by the Holy Spirit. I think her imitators have cast a shadow on her ministry and sincerity. Some also wonder why she wasn't healed and died of heart failure. Kuhlman herself never knew why some people were healed and some were not. She apparently agonized that not all who came were healed and prayed one day she could witness a healing like those brought by Jesus where all who came would be healed. Maybe it was just time to be called home and her failing heart was simply showing she had given all she had. I should also point out that she never claimed to be a faith healer and never sought to be one.I am doubly blessed my used yellowing mass paperback copy apparently came from the library of reverend into my hands. I can definitely recommend this book as even if you aren't a believer you can simply read it as a great book on the power of belief and what can be accomplished if you simply keep on going.

The life of Ms. Kuhlman serves as a reminder to the body of Christ on at least two counts.One, that God gives gifts by His choosing (1 Corinthiansâ€¬ â€12:11â€¬) and we cannot twist His arm any other way despite the fact that we try so hard to win Him over by our works or our judgments against one another.Second, though we are loved and favored immeasurably, though we walk according to the Spirit so that we do not fulfill the flesh, we still walk this earth in a fallen vessel and must be on our guard against the enemy who tempts us. â€œKeep watching and praying that you may not come into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."â€ Markâ€¬ â€14:38â€¬ â€NASBâ€¬â€¬As the author notes, God reveals the good choices and the bad ones of those He has called (David, Peter, etc) - but not to give opportunity for judgment. Rather, that we would see again the greatness of His love towards us and allow that love to overflow to others.I highly recommend this candid book of the life of Ms. Kuhlman. It is well written and enjoyable to read. It leaves one examining his own heart before God while basking in His loving embrace.

For years, I have known of Kathryn Kuhlman's healing ministry, but I never knew about the woman who served as the instrument for God's miracles. Jamie Buckingham has honored this servant of God and blessed the body of Christ by chronicling her legacy.

The Bible said "if you hunger and thirst after righteousness, you shall be filled." I looked around and did not see many people doing what the WORD of GOD says, so I started searching for people who really walk the Christian Walk. Kathryn Kuhlman's book was one that I read and I'm telling you this book brought clarity to the TRUE WORD OF GOD!!!!! I highly recommend this book and I believe that every LEADER in Ministry, etc should read it and take note. I read this book with a yellow highlighter and I'm telling you she gave so many nuggets that would help you in your walk with God. I'm keeping this book in my library so that I can go back to it for reference.......HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!!!

Doesn't pull any punches in telling about her successes and so-called failures. Reading this book and the ones about doctor-documented miracles that took place in her ministry will really help you build your own faith to receive the miracles Jesus gave his life to give all of us.

What a FANTASTIC read about the life of Kathryn Kuhlman! I seriously couldn't put the book down and ended up staying up way later than I should have on several occasions. The writing is clear, concise, and enjoyable. It is not some book written for a theologian or a scholar, but it is something that everyone can enjoy. It is a detailed biography of the life of Kathryn Kuhlman. It is 329 pages, but it never felt long or drawn out. I kept wanting more! There was so much information, both good and bad, about her life and ministry including many pictures. This isn't some book about the greatest hits of some shining spiritual star, it is the journey of a woman who yielded her life to the power of the Holy Spirit and saw the world change because of it. It is a glorious testament to her life, flaws, scandals, and all. Even if you didn't know anything about Kathryn Kuhlman's life, there is so much that can be learned from the life of this handmaiden of the Lord. It is about giving glory to whom glory is due: God alone. The last line of the book sums it up nicely: "Kathryn's gone. But the Holy Spirit is still alive." If you can't tell from this review, I LOVED this book and would recommend it to anybody!

She's writing at a kids point of view. And, it has a lot of humor in it. Megan McDonald is my most favorite author of all time. It's amazing how she does this. Every single word in her books have a perfect fit. By that I that she says the right words. I should know that because I am the only one paying attention in class during grammar and writing. Last year, my most favorite teacher ever told me that my writing was "perfection". And she should know that because her father wrote ten books. I love this book very much I'm only 8 years old but this book is what Inspired me to become an actress or a book writer. This book also teaches you abouthistory and independence, for example who ever thought that there was a girls in history I know about pirates. (but this doesn't help you with that) I did not know much about history until I read this book . Now I know a lot ,like sybil was sixteen and she rode forty miles FORTY MILES FOR GOODNESS SAKE. who could ever do that she was only 16 she was very brave. I recommend this to anyone who wants to learn about history in a very FUN FUN FUN way it's the best I recommend it to anyone.

We really love the Judy Moody books. This book was, as usual, full of great Judy and Stink adventures... However, when compared to the other Judy Moody books we have read, this one was just "alright"... Now we're off to read Judy Moody - Around the World in 8 1/2 Days!

In this book Judy represented her country. I like this book because it shows hilarious feelings and a hint of history. I rated five stars because Judy finally finds out that she has to be responsible for herself. Judy also has a similarity with me: She's in third grade! I like this book and want to read more Judy Moody books.

I received a copy of this book to review. What I really like about this book is the format. It has prompts that are there to get you thinking, to narrow your focus on your true goals. The first section guides you this process and gets you started on your way. The next section is set up in weekly format (52) asking what you accomplished, experiences you are grateful for etc. the last section looks back over the year to celebrate the goals you accomplished.I do believe this is a book I will use as I have several goals in mind for he next year. Actually the same goals I have had in the past years (minimizing my stuff) I just havenâ€™t fully accomplished it. I believe this book will keep my mind focused on my goals as I will interact with it weekly. It keeps my goals in front of my face even when events pull me in another direction.

Guess whatâ€™s here?! My hard copy (I also received a sneak peek digital copy and began the process a month ago) and Iâ€™m legitimately excited to start this journal tonight. Everyone who knows me knows that Iâ€™m not all about this kind of stuff. However, this guided journal is different. Itâ€™s because a highly experienced therapist wrote this and her wisdom gained from her almost two decades of mental health work permeates each page. As a new mom, I struggle sometimes with the fresh anxieties that come along with being responsible for the new love of your life. Good book to start research work

I used this book for master's and phd level research methods courses. It's concise and has a unified theme throughout the book. I particularly like their emphasis on causal inference part.

A lot of the other reviews give great insight into what this book is and isn't.I simply want to say that this book is excellent as a guide to what an optimal qualitative reasearch design should be, if it is to be as valid and reliable as possible. Qualitative research seems like a "haven" for researchers that want to follow their "heart" or "feelings", and this book contends unscientific research in a way that surely offends many of these researchers. Not that feelings should be excluded, it's just that the design must be more than a subjective view presented as research, and this book will help, even if you don't agree with everything they say.

Just getting started on the dissertation journey; this is a great book for the process! I'd recommend it for anyone working on their doctoral program!

It's a good book for social science researchers to read and use to develop their thinking in developing research plans and good research papers.

Truly outstanding resource. It's really many in one: it covers a great deal of approaches to discourse that would otherwise take many volumes to read. I was glad to have purchased it and will look out for more from Schiffrin in the future.

I know, I know, Discourse is all about Schiffrin, I mean- she wrote the book! However, this book is now outdated and is far too long-winded and meandering. I suggest a re-write, Dr. Schiffrin.

I gotta give Deborah SOME credit; compiling the research and writing a book like this is no easy task. HOWEVER! If your intention is to learn about discourse analysis/how to do discourse analysis, good luck. I can't quite put my finger on why this book is so inaccessible (writing style, poor explanation of material/concepts(?)), but I would hope there is a better alternative out there.

I am writing this ostensibly in order to counter the unsubstantiated views of the previous reviewer. I have used this book to teach undergraduates about the range and relevance of the various methods used in analysing discourse - spoken and written. Deborah Schiffrin has provided a very useful addition to the study of discourse for students who might feel overwhelmed by the various - often mutually exclusive - approaches.The book starts with a well presented look at different definitions of Discourse - essential if we are to establish the relevance of competing methods.Part 2 of this textbook offers us 6 chapters covering 6 different methods - from the purist CA approach to Pragmatics - 1. Speech Act Theory; 2. Interactional Sociolingusitics; 3. The Ethnography of Communication; 4. Pragmatics; 5. Conversation Analysis; 6. Variation Analysis.As a springboard into the field of Critical Discourse Analysis, there is a lot to gain in terms of establishing the underlying principles of descriptive analysis in Schiffrin's work. Despite this being fairly old now by academic standards, I would certainly recommend the addition of this textbook to the reading lists of first year, and possibly second year undergraduates who are studying Text and Discourse Analysis.

This book is written in abstruse academese and is a closed loop: terms are defined in the jargon of the field. To an expert in the field, useful, to a novice, incomprehensible. The writing style is dull, opaque, verbose, and redundant. (She constantly says, "put another way" and the 'other way' is as incomprehensible as the first way). Also, she misrepresents formal grammar.

Every chapter is worst than the last in this terribly written book. We can only hope that the new edition will be better, but I seriously doubt it as the author is a hack.

I bought this exam book along with Court Officer(Passbooks) (Career Examination Passbooks). In addition to these purchases, I also spent a few hundred dollars for a prep course. So the books alone may not be enough to score high.I took the exam for New York in 2013. My score was in the high 90's and was given a list number in the high 600's. According to what I've researched online, it's a very good score and list number with a good chance of being canvassed. If you want to boost your chances of doing well, buying this product and the Passbook is a small price to pay. The classes I signed up for definitely helped me.So do your due diligence and research on this book and other resources that can help increase your chances of scoring high. Good luck

I orderd this book for the nyc court officer exam and this book was excellent!! It has a lot of practices exams, which was very good. It has little short cuts on how to pass the exam and the what to do and what not to do. This book was very helpful. It was a great buy. I scored an 88. I took the court officer exam. Hopefully I will be called soon. The practice tests were very helpful. The book overall was helpful. I would order any Barron's book again to study for tests.

the book is without a doubt more intense than actual court officer test. there is stuff in here that you are really not going to have on the actual exam. for the court officer exam I reccommend studying the charts and the parts that have to do with looking at info that is displayed in a few different fonts and you have to try to find what is missing or different. all the other stuff is good if your taking other types of police officer tests like patrol officer or state trooper.

I've yet to actually read the WHOLE thing, however, it's neatly written. The font is large enough so that most can read it with little to no issue(s), and each page has more than enough information within it. The whole book itself is much thicker than I anticipated (which is good) and full of semi-updated information in terms of testing material.What I did not enjoy (although I was aware it was used to an extent) was the excessive markings within the book itself, spoiling every multiple choice answer I attempted to solve. Everything (and I mean e v e r y t h i n g), is already pre-circled, underlined, or crossed out by the book's previous owner(s) which makes it tough to study.Other than that, it was a solid purchase. Would recommend the book, but buy it new for your own sake. :)

IRMGARD KEUN become an overnight sensation in German literary circles with the publication of her first novel, Gilgi, in 1931. Her second novel, The Artificial Silk Girl, shot to bestseller status in 1932, only to be placed the next year on an early Nazi blacklist. Eventually sentenced to death by the Nazis, she fled the country again and staged her own suicide ... then snuck back into Germany where she lived undercover for the duration of the war. She died in 1982, shortly after her work was rediscovered by feminist critics and general readers in Germany. Translator GEOFF WILKES is a Lecturer in German at the University of Queensland. He wrote the afterwords to Keun's novel After Midnight and to Hans Fallada's Every Man DiesAlone.

So fascinating that Irmgard Keun dealt with women's issues in a time when we didn't know we had women's issues -- or at least they weren't talked about. (i.e., sexual harassment, premarital sex, single motherhood).

Like a movie about a young woman thru work, love under the Weimar period in Germany.While reading it, the story flows like a movie!

Great read, quality copy of the novel, and delivered quickly.

The lover of the great Joseph Roth (not Philip) who wrote between the two world wars, and a very good writer in her own right, this is is a recently translated book about the new 'working girl'. Leaving her unhappy home and having a love affair , she eventually finds she has to leave for the big city. With the looming war this book brings a unique feminine sense to life in Germany at the time.

Purely from a literary point of view this is a well written and interesting story.Dr. Reggie Anderson is a true believer and he has a story to tell.The Bible tells us to go and spread the word, Reggie is doing what we are told to do.I am sure he is a comfort to his patients, his compassion and love for his fellow man isall consuming. He says, "When I practice medicine I can't separate my faith from my training"I don't think he should separate the two. He also says the sights and sounds of heaven are allaround us, that he is not special. Not his words but my words, Reggie is tuned in! One lesson I learned from this book is, turn to God---not away when bad things happen.

Death is not the end, rather it's the doorway to Heaven and eternity with loved ones and Jesus -the One Who loves us most! Your fear of death will be quenched and washed away, replaced by an eagerness to someday make it to your real home. I know from experience the pain of family members going home before their time. Between 2001 and 2015, 10 of my closest family members have gone home to be with Jesus...a godly grandmother and mother-in-law, my 29 year old son and his 2 babies miscarried shortly after conception, my father-in-law, father, son-in-law and mother (the 4 of them dying within weeks and months of each other) and lastly my husband recently, the love of my life next to Jesus. As a strong believer for almost 30 years now, it has been difficult to let them go. None of them died naturally. BUT, God saw me through each one's journey home to Him. Like Dr Reggie, I long to be with them and Jesus, but it is not yet my time. I too have had some glimpses of things on the other side and yet I "know" there are many glorious discoveries yet ahead of me over there. God is good all the time, and yes He can be found in the midst of pain and grief - if we will choose to look for Him. This book will inspire the readers to look for Him now and in the eternal life ahead. Thank you Dr. Reggie for sharing the wonders of God, Jesus and Heaven with us!!!

I agree with one disappointed reader that the inside of the book was not at all what I expected: less about people passing from this life to the next and more about this author's own spiritual journey. But the story is so well told that it captivated me right away. Yes, it is written from a Southern Evangelical's perspective, but read carefully. It's a very truthful account written by a physician who faces scorn from colleagues for his honest spiritual approach to the practice of medicine and his honesty about his own spiritual experiences. I'm sure if he'd been a little more "New Age-y" he would have a bigger best seller on his hands. Instead, what Dr. Anderson presents is his real experience of the Divine in his life, experiences that have not only guided him but I'm sure have been of immense value to his patients and their families. One could only wish that everyone had a doctor like this! It was not what I expected, but has brought me joy to read, and no small degree of comfort. It's an honest spiritual memoir and the author's message is clear, though it might not be what everyone wants to hear: God is real; God intervenes in our lives out of his love for us; and, some, like Dr. Anderson, are blessed to be given certain divine gifts that are intended to be shared so that others of us, not so fully blessed as he (yet!), may find faith and joy.

I picked up Appointments With Heaven By Reggie Anderson the last day that Jacob was on this earth. I was struggling along with his pain that day so sat on the couch by him and read. I needed something spiritual to help me get through it.I've read several books about Heaven before. I don't doubt that some people are able to get a glimpse of Heaven while here on earth. It's just hard to know which books are honest and which are not (because some I've read seem so far fetched that you really have to question them).Written by a doctor who not only had his own glimpse of Heaven but also has had some with patients as they cross over. It's a subtle glimpse at Heaven. Reggie Anderson tells us how he lost his faith for some time and how he gained it back. How caring for the living and the dying has helped him see parts of not only Heaven, but also hell.The book kept me interested the whole way through and helped strengthen my own faith, especially in a time when I needed it.

While the following review may be critical, I have to say I love this woman! I saw her in an interview and was very interested in reading her book. Sheâ€™s still very new to all of this. I should give this book a poor review. But, alas, I just canâ€™t. Much can be forgiven for her youth and fervor.She is convinced sheâ€™s the only one out there with this gift. Or handling this sort of work. Things would be significantly better for her if sheâ€™d research. Thereâ€™s an entire branch of Catholicism called Charismatic Renewal doing just what sheâ€™s doing. There are special masses for healing. Many faiths are involved in healing and deliverance. I would dearly love to tell her to find a Byzantine Catholic church to recharge her batteries in.She is 38, yet the book reads like it was written by a pre-teen. Itâ€™s repetitive, and often contradictory. I donâ€™t think sheâ€™s lying. People like us have to interpret messages, which seems to make us very creative people. If youâ€™re looking for something intelligent and articulate, pass on this book. If you need bubblegum for the brain, enjoy! If youâ€™re gifted and feel like youâ€™re the only one, buy this book. Itâ€™s humorous and uplifting. You are NOT alone! Then hit the library.She calls herself a non-denominational exorcist. What sheâ€™s doing is not exorcism. Sheâ€™s not working with demons. Like so many others trying to make a name for themselves in the field of paranormal, she probably grabbed on to the term â€œexorcistâ€ for its mystique. She is working with lesser malignant entities, but nothing demonic. In order to be non-denominational â€“ you have to have a faith foundation. She has none.Her lack of knowledge about genuine exorcism has left her highly critical of Catholic priests. Straight up ignorance on her part. Not all priests have an exorcistâ€™s knowledge of demons and/or demonic activities. They gather information in order to refer a person to a trained exorcist. I read her criticisms and just wanted to hug her. Honey let me helpâ€¦Due to our shaky moral ground, the need for exorcism is on the rise. Back in the 90s, Pope John Paul II demanded that each diocese have an exorcist. The Church even went so far as to launch â€œexorcism school, which now has a waiting list.â€ But itâ€™s a long slow climb. In 1998, America had 9 exorcists. By 2015 we had nearly 300. But thatâ€™s still not enough.While itâ€™s generally true that priests do not see the disincarnate, I personally know 3 Catholic exorcists and one ordained non-denominational exorcist who use laity with the gift of discernment of spirits. As I said, sheâ€™s far from the only one.All that being said, she is the genuine article. She is without a doubt an â€œeclectic healer.â€ An eclectic uses the trappings of many faiths or traditions to a singular end.Her belief that she â€œdestroysâ€ these entities is also ignorant. Dangerously ignorant. Science dictates that energy cannot be destroyed. Spirit is energy. Unless you understand how to send these entities back to their origin, or teach a person how to protect themselves, attachments can and do return. Very often with â€œfriends.â€She speaks of higher beings coming to assist her, such as Buddha, Mohammed, and Jesus. Here I get red flags. She describes Buddha as a fat jolly fellow. Itâ€™s a common America misconception that Buddha is a deity worshipped by Buddhists. The goal of Buddhism is to attain enlightenment (buddhahood) and thereby break the cycle of reincarnation (karma). There are many who attained buddhahood. The most well-known being Siddhartha. Based on her description, the spirit she refers to walked this earth as a monk named Bo Dai. He lived a life similar to Francis of Assisi. He is not a deity. As Francis of Assisi is beloved of all Christians, Bo Dai is beloved by Buddhists, thus depicted often in statuary. Mohammed is not divine. Muslims do not worship him. Heâ€™s just a man who founded a religion. Like George Fox who founded the Society of Friends (aka Quakers). We must test the spirit. Always.Jesus is divine. Jesus is a â€œhigher being.â€ She contradicts herself about him several times. Do I believe Jesus appears to her? I most certainly do! God does not reserve his assistance for Christians. It breaks my heart that so many believe it so.She states sheâ€™s never encountered Satan. Satan is not a name. Lucifer isnâ€™t his name either. It means â€œlight bringer,â€ described as the most beautiful of Godâ€™s archangels. I know his true name. If she were actually dealing with demons, sheâ€™d know it too. Iâ€™m sure heâ€™s appeared to her in some form, and fooled her.Lilith is not a Hebrew goddess, as described in this book. There is a lot of misinformation on the net about Lilith. Most stemming from a satire, not historical text. Actual Hebrew text dictates â€œlilitâ€ as a night creature. Other ancient texts (Babylonian, Sumerian, Assyrian) dictate that the lilitu are a class of lesser demons. Some creature appears to her in a familiar guise. We must test the spirit.There is truth to what she says about the core. It is where the divine resides within us. The place where malignant entities seek to attach and feed. This is where she works her healing. She needs to familiarize herself with other ways healing occurs in the core. For instance some years the Julian and Gregorian calendars align and Holy Week happens for more than 2 billion people at the same time. With all those people in prayer and supplication for an entire week - spontaneous deliverance and healing is abundant. Prime time for her to work on The Cecil.She desperately needs to read up on the entities sheâ€™s dealing with. There is so much ancient wisdom she can tap into if sheâ€™d just pick up a book. She regularly contradicts herself on how she describes these entities. Again, I donâ€™t think sheâ€™s lying. I think sheâ€™s struggling and interpreting things. She needs to drop the arrogance and study. She laughingly comments about genies stating they donâ€™t exist. They most certainly do. The Disney concept of genies has a foundation in truth. Genie derives from the Arabic word Jinn, an entity slightly lower on the spiritual food chain than angels. They wreak havoc and definitely take up residence in people.She talks about how these things look as well as their age, size and gender. Spirit has no gender, no real form, size is irrelevant and it does not age. Though they may manifest with such an appearance, she needs to know this is just â€œsmoke and mirrors.â€It was SO refreshing to read her statement that sage has zero influence on entities. Proof positive sheâ€™s the genuine article. My eyeballs hurt from all the times Iâ€™ve had to roll them when some fool spouts off about burning sage to chase off negative entities. It works to clear negative â€œenergy.â€ Not negative entities. There is a difference.It pains me that she has no manner in which to keep these things out of her home. Again, if sheâ€™d just pick up a book, find a teacher, or a veteran group. She also misunderstands why they visit her. They arenâ€™t curious about her. They are drawn to her light. Sheâ€™s not a Sister of the Darkness. Sheâ€™s a Child of the Light.

I'm completely fascinated by this woman's tale. Unfortunately, the way it's told is ... infuriating. If you're wondering whether to buy this book, here's essentially how it goes:"I was born with a gift. When I was little, I didn't understand it and I was afraid of it. Now it is my destiny to help others. I am the chosen one. I see hundreds of thousands of entities. But more on that later. I had a terrible childhood and my mom didn't love me. Once, in middle school, a girl stopped being my friend. My life is so painful because I am practically a modern-day Mother Theresa. Once, I went to the nurse and noticed another boy was sick, and I felt horrible. See? I'm so selfless it hurts. But I'll get to that point later. I know so many famous people in Hollywood - but I'll thinly veil my bragging my telling you I want to protect the celebs' privacy. I'll get to that later in the book. I'm really special. I've never met anyone as special, selfless, damaged as me. But we'll get to that a little later on."

I'm not sure if I'm the target audience in terms of spirituality and whether I believe in entities, but this book was the closest thing I've read that has made me think twice. It's also incredibly entertaining and R.H. has such a funny way of describing the crazy world that she inhabits. Fun read for everyone!!

Although the claims she makes in this book line up with historical claims of entities you can glean from various world religions and spiritualists, her tone through the entire book is very self-inflated. I do not know why she feels the need to assert over and over again that she is the ONLY ONE in the world who can remove these troublesome entities. At times, I felt as though I was reading a wordy business pitch. Towards the end, she started to sound like a New Age blog, and found myself skimming instead of reading.I suggest buying the kindle version and seeing for yourself. I wouldn't buy a hard copy, if I were you. But that's just me, this could be your cup of tea!

A one-of-a-kind non-religious metaphysical book about a woman who actually destroys demons. I was amazed at what a convincing read it was. Rh Stavis has been able to see "astral entities" since childhood which latch onto humans like parasites. What the demons get out of it is not exactly clear, but apparently the demons feed off emotions, but how emotions could be sustenance is not clear. RH however is very believable in her convictions and gives plenty of extremely specific and very believable details about how she learned to identify and get rid of demons who are attached to people.There were some parallels to Monroe's JOURNEYS OUT OF THE BODY and FAR JOURNEYS regarding the parasitic creatures he described in the astral world. But Stavis' story was completely different and more compelling, since she was learning how to help people with her gifts, while facing the most incredible creatures imaginable. A fascinating, entertaining read which makes you doubt the underpinning of our visible world, and makes you want to experience the strange parallel worlds that Stavis describes.Five stars. Excellent on every level and leaves a yearning in your heart to have a deeper understanding of our reality.

Hey, I donâ€™t believe any of this silliness, but it may be my low frequency ðŸ˜‚. If her clients believe it, and she believes it, itâ€™s a great placebo effect, AND she did get ten of my dollars. Sheâ€™s smart.

This is a quick but comprehensive read, one that will probably sound all too familiar to anyone who's studied these cute critters on Youtube (if you haven't done so, the book can be recommended as a superior alternative to the unscripted, static and over-long videos made by owners of their beloved but frankly sedentary and unexciting pets). The author corroborates some of the non-rodent, pig-like qualities I've noticed in these animals, such as their tendency to keep a "clean house" in their sleeping quarters while confining their bathroom habits to the corner furthest away from their hideaway.The writer distinguishes female and male personality characteristics (making me wish I'd purchased a female). My only quibble with the book is the impression it gives that all of these creatures are amiable, amorous, highly social animals that desire little more than a cooperative human "cuddling partner." The writer might have spared some new adopters unnecessary disappointment by stressing the "prey status" that makes these animals naturally suspicious and evasive. Patience and slow movements will eventually win their trust--but not in all cases. Food will lure them. On the other hand, they're not intelligent enough to know a bribe when they see it.

The recommendations for cage size in this book are absolutely incorrect. The book indicates a pet-store sized cage is acceptable, when in truth most guinea pigs need about 7.5 square feet of space to live comfortably. Otherwise the info seems steady.

I bought this book for my daughter so she could learn about her knew guinea pig. The book has a lot of good information with plenty of pictures. The book was written at a level that my 12year old kid could easily understand and enjoyed reading. I recommend this book to anyone that recently purchased or is thinking of purchasing a new guinea pig.

So far I have enjoyed reading the book. It is very informative, direct, and we'll organized. The reason I am giving 4 starts instead of 5 is because the section discussing cage size is not accurate for guinea pigs. The minimum size for one guinea pig is 7.5 to 8 square feet and 10.5-13 to two (depending if is is males or females) as mentioned buy someone else here. They need room to run and play.

This book is very informative and a perfect introduction for my daughters to learn about guinea pigs before we actually got them.

I am VERY happy about my purchase of this book.I am a new adoptive mom of a Guinea and was worried about not being informed and never having owned one before. I had considered adopting a second one as well but wanted to make sure I was well informed enough to care for 1, let alone 2.This is a fantastic book, and I wouldn't expect anything less from a "Barron's" book, I own a few types of their books for all the animals we own.Very happy to have this!

One of my favorite authors, John McPhee, wrote a book about single tennis match called Levels of the Game. A book about a single tennis game does not sound like there can be much to it, but the story of the match is really the story of two men, how they were raised, what lead them to that space and time and playing style, and what that match meant as a pivoting point in race and culture. More than any other book, I was reminded of Levels of the Game while reading Conspiracy.Most know the initial story - a private tape of Hulk Hogan released in the media - but the full story and its implications are well covered here. Holiday refers to Peter Thiel's love of chess more than once in the book, and this story also reminded me of a chess match. It's never a 'page-turner' in the traditional sense, but a very subtle battle between two opponents that swells over ten years. (I would highly recommend reading this rather than listening to it for that reason - there is enough depth to the story that it works best on the page, otherwise you will miss things).I had read a little and already seen the Netflix documentary on the case, but here is what I really liked about the book:* The story of the 'why did Peter Thiel do this' is much more complicated than can be explained by a documentary. Even after you remove all motives except for the personal, Holiday points out there were significant financial motives as well.* Why choose the battlefield that they did? Thiel had almost limitless options to accomplish his ends, but chose a very specific means.* I had not realized before reading this how much this case signals the clash between the right to privacy and the right to freedom that is still heading towards collision.* Thiel is a fascinating guy, full of contradictions. One of my biggest takeaways is that I want to just learn more about him and read more about his Christian faith.* There is not an easy answer to the question of who was right in this case, and Holiday does a good job of holding that tension for the entire book. Despite how despicable Gawker was in many cases and how easy it is to delight in their downfall, there is a real question of whether the ends justifies the means.* The ultimate loser in this story, to me, is the legal system. It's very apparent that no one except for someone with very deep pockets could have made this happen. Depressing to realize that even a public figure like Hulk Hogan basically has no chance without being bankrolled by a billionaire in a case like this.If you are interested in the story already, definitely pick this one up. There is a lot here that really adds to the public record and it is well worth your time to consider the larger questions it raises.

I love narrative non-fiction and I definitely love anything about conspiracies, but what I was most surprised by with this book is how much I learned about the nature of conspiracy itself. Usually when you read like a spy thriller or an espionage book or something like that, you get the details of a conspiracy but they never zoom out and tell you why those details work or how they fit into a larger strategy. You get that kind of knowledge in this book which was really cool. And somehow I ended up sympathizing with each of the key figures in the story at various points, which is saying something coming from a Rowdy Roddy Piper fan. Definitely recommend.

This book is awesome. Written by an author who is thoughtful, intelligent, and a deep thinker, it is not simply a rehashing of a recent, titillating event...it is something else entirely. Donâ€™t be surprised if this is made into a movie by someone who reads this book and realizes that there is so much more there than simple betrayal and revenge. It would have been so easyâ€”tempting evenâ€”to make the major players in this story into caricatures. They could all so easily fit into their roles as eccentric billionaire, ruthless media troll, and washed-up pro wrestler. But Ryan handles the lives of each of these people as a complex mixture of genius, sociopathy, vulnerability and fallibility. He makes it fascinating by not pandering to a â€œquick readâ€ mentality, but by painting a full and multi-faceted world of complexity and intrigue.The story itself is well knownâ€¦well, the Cliff Notes version anyway. But Ryan delves into the details, the twists and turns, and the emotional ups and downs like a pro. He brings in historical references and philosophies of people like Machiavelli, Seneca and General Sherman with deftness and brevity. He could have gone the path of many other writers by giving us a history lesson on each, but he instead weaves the past with the present succinctly without getting boring. The way he paces the story reads like a crime novelâ€¦suspenseful and unpredictable, even though we know the ultimate end.Brilliant, entertaining and profound.Buy this book. You won't be disappointed.

This is a book of longing: longing for uniqueness, for love, for escape, for solitude, for identity in a faceless world. As is the case with much of Mishima's work, the longing takes place in a deep introspective psychological novel. This time, the protagonist is a malleable teenager, and his mirror is a once-malleable sailor he thinks is a hero. The child is precocious in ways that adults cannot understand, and his "genius" involves violence and subservience to a cult of young outcasts. Mishima himself was an outcast, his sensibility full of rage. This is a deeply disturbing novel, not for the faint of heart. Beautiful translation, except for the jacket copy, which doesn't allow for the extremism of Mishima's thoughts and actions.

The genius of Sailor is how it examines complex issues - Japan's postwar identity, western materialism versus traditional Japanese values, the ways in which nihilism overwhelms meaning - in such a concise, straightforward story. Ryuji is a simple sailor who went to sea to achieve some vaguely defined higher glory. Although Ryuji believes he's destined for great things, so far the fates haven't aligned to reveal what that great thing is. While on shore leave in Yokohama he meets Fusako, a widow who owns a high end clothing store that offers imported English articles. They become lovers, and, before long, fall in love.Fusako's thirteen year old son Noburu runs with a gang of strange and frightening youths who reject all attempts to impose meaning on them from the outside, whether it's from school, parents, society or literature. Noburu is torn between loyalty to the beliefs of his gang and his admiration for the heroic life he believes Ryuji exemplifies. But Ryuji's growing love for Fusako leads him to abandon the sea to become a clerk in Fusako's shop. Noburu's gang pounces on this as evidence that Ryuji has betrayed Noburu and them, and that he must be punished for abandoning the heroic course. This they proceed to do, in a way that feels both horrifying and inevitable.Written five years before his death at 45, this novel encapsulates Mishima's major intellectual and emotional preoccupations, but doesn't resolve them. Ryuji is punished for abandoning his dreams of glory, but it's not clear he would have achieved them. Fusako symbolizes collaboration with the western devil taking over Japan, but she is accomplished and financially successful. The most disturbing character is young Noburu. At an age when most humans are acquiring the mental sextants they need to navigate through the world, he is ensnared by a group who see life as having meaning only in the extremes of glory or death. The growing distance between his everyday life and his dark fantasies opens up during the course of the novel in profound and unsettling ways. What happens to Noburu, who has his whole life in front of him, is in many ways sadder than what happens to Ryuji.Noburu's dark dialectic is also a glimpse into the mental torments that affected Mishima. The most un-Japanese of its major writers in terms of his interests and lifestyle, he was nevertheless the most jingoistic Japanese patriot. A man of massive discipline and ambition, he was bedeviled by the fear that beneath the surface of his successful, glittering life lay a vast emptiness devoid of meaning. He spent his enormous intellectual and physical resources on turning himself into a symbol, but doubts about the meaning of that symbol led him to constantly revise it. Out of these internal contradictions he generated a furious literary output, a high profile life and a very public, if puzzling death meant to protest Japan's turn away from its traditional values. His internal struggles were both sad and heroic; his legacy is the great novels he left us, including this one.

I bought this after seeing it on David Bowie's top 100 list. I will warn that there are several disturbing moments, but I still found it to be a quick and interesting read unlike any other book I've read.

Yukio Mishima was a true master of confronting themes, written with great style. His descriptions of place are wonderful, plucking out one small pine bathed in sunlight in the midst of the desolation of an industrial landscape. You soon sense the underlying tension of this book - steadily emerging from the beauty, you know that this is going to end badly, with an unavoidable horror that is coming ... Gripping stuff. Thankfully no splatter-fest - but the cold, sociopathic "chief" and his nihilistic accolytes are truly frightening. The inevitability of what will be done is left to haunt you.Sure, you can read it at a number of levels - a contemporary view of a post-war Japan, a treatise on charismatic but psychopathic leadership, whatever. Or maybe just take it as a beautifully written tale of suspense and horror. Either way, it is great literature.Not one for the faint hearted - the cold, hard suspense is difficult to bear.

The book itself is short, but sweet. Well, sweet in a sickening sort of way.I love the characters, I love the way Mishima-san wrote descriptions, a lot of books fail to actually pull me into the moment. For better or worse, at certain parts of the story; I feel like I'm right there experiencing it as well. Either as a curious observer or unwilling participant.It's a great book that I think every man should read.

The ending was heavily foreshadowed throughout the book, so in that sense it was predictable. The way it all played out was a bit surprising, though not really. Mostly the book is just dark, and disturbing on a few levels.

The book was great and everything but the binding fell apart for me, so just be careful with it and you'll be okay.

At first you are not sure which way he leans (I am adamantly against GMO's), but in the end you learn. Really opens your eyes on a deeper level about the GMO debate and what is happening, the dangers. I never knew Hawaii was ground zero for all these bad companies testing their GMO's and chemicals. And I hope that Hawaii wins its battle to take back their islands and get rid of what is destroying paradise and contributing to huge problems in America's food supply. Say NO to GMO's.

Rancorous legal battles remain at the center of contentious arguments and appeals that have not yet been exhausted.Autumn Ness is a local activist who recently declared, " Overshadowing all the issues is the fact that the corporations have hijacked every level of our government." The corporations are Monsanto, Syngenta, Dupont, Dow, Bayer and BASF.Are GMO's safe? This is all apart from pesticides and agrochemicals that reflect 300,000 poisonings annually in the U.S. of humans to which we should add the deaths of 70 million birds. Industrial feedlots now exist in the shadows of nine billion animal slaughters every year.Diabetes, cardiovascular disease, neurological issues have all jumped dramatically in concert with the amount of glyphosate applied to food crops; one-quarter of Americans now suffer from chronic diseases.Finally, this from a student of English professor, author Jenkins: "Eating microwaved chicken nuggets from the nearest fast-food joint seems less appealing once you have tended an organic garden plot surrounded by friendships developed with a flock of charismatic hens who trail alongsideas you weed a bed of potatoes."The author concludes that not all genetic engineering is undesirable or negative; it holds great promise and great peril. Most recent concerns center on the herbicide Glyphosate, a ubiquitous toxin that is found in many products from soy sauce to breast milk with links to cancer, kidney, and liver disease plus metabolic function. Observers recently saw a 49 fold increase in this herbicide on corn grain residue and a 2,000 fold increase in alfalfa grown for animal feed.On the promise score card will come drought resistant grains, cows without horns, pigs without testes, and chickens producing only female egg-layers. The only topic on which all sides are not considered is "climate change", which is simply assumed as fact.One of the big takeaways for me was that the problem with genetically-modified organisms (GMOs) is not merely the risk of unintended consequences when changing the makeup of our food, but also the health consequences to us of added pesticides and fungicides in our diet when plants are modified to tolerate them.Another big takeaway was the difference between turning all our agricultural output into only two or three patented foods supplied only by a few huge corporations, versus using GMOs as part of an intentional system of local suppliers of otherwise-natural food, raised without pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. I am now fortunate to live where organic gardening of almost any desired food is easy year-round, versus having previously lived where only corn and beans were visible in area farms. We have a community garden, in which I now grow many of the fruits and vegetables we eat, with little need for pesticides or fertilizer, but huge composters fed daily. Until I read this book I hadn't realized how important that is for our health, and now hope such local fare may become available everywhere, rather than everyone being offered only industrial-scale foods from only a few sources.The book does a great job of pointing out my own main concern with GMOs and how they are raised - namely the intense efforts by those who promote them to reveal nothing about what is being done to make them, no matter how many and how dangerous the chemicals sprayed near innocent and unwarned humans in doing so. If GMOs are as wonderful as proponents claim, and if pesticides used in growing them are so harmless, then why must it be like pulling teeth to learn anything about what is being done and where, and why such a deathly opposition to admitting which products in grocery stores do and don't contain them?I'm also as offended as the author with the notion that even farmers who try to avoid using GMOs can successfully be sued if their fields are nonetheless found to contain GMOs blown in on the wind. It seems to me it should be the other way around, as such fields can no longer be certified as organic, through no fault of their owner.The book also does a great job of illustrating the problem of regulatory capture by industry of the government agencies intended to keep them well regulated, resulting in government unable to perform its legitimate function of being a fair umpire of free enterprise.The book is full of actual discussions with those for and against various uses of GMOs, putting real and human faces on what is otherwise just an us versus them good versus evil debate in which both sides see themselves as the heroes and the other side as villains.Overall, a great thorough and interesting discussion of all aspects of a very important and timely issue. Highly recommended!

One of the best Latin books out there! Thanks to this book, I have been able to learn Latin. My kids love it too! Easy to understand. Make sure you get all 3 books (First Year Latin and the answer key).

This review focuses on the Kindle Edition. Anent the content of the grammar, I am in complete agreement with the majority above: this is that rare Goldilocks Grammar that hits the perfect balance between too much and too little explanation.As a quick aside, there are two basic schools for learning any language, the Natural or Intuitive school and the Analytical or Grammatical school. In the former you immerse yourself in the written or (preferably) spoken language and intuitively learn the structure. In the latter, you learn the structures and then approach the sentences of the language with that structural knowledge as the guide to meaning. Both methods work; which you choose is a matter largely of your personal gifts and preferences. For those who want their grammar up front, the content of this book is superb.***Now, the KINDLE Edition: I honestly hesitated quite a bit before purchasing the Kindle Edition. There was no need. This digital book is extremely well done. First of all, there are actual page numbers included in the slider at the bottom of the page. The digital "loc" references are still there, but the primary way the text is ordered is around the page numbers of the printed text. This is important for those who want to use the Kindle edition with the larger four year Henle Latin Course. In short, yes you can.Second, the table of contents is linked and fully interactive. Skim the TOC and tap "Reflexive Pronouns" and you are at the reflexive pronouns section of the text.More complicated tables and images (such as the diagramming sentences in the back) are all intact, clear, and relatively clean.The index at the back of the book is complete, but, alas, not interactive. Since the page numbers are included, this is not a major flaw. Still: Deduct 1/10th of one star.Footnotes are (inexplicably) one-way interactive. That is, footnotes are highlighted: you can click on the footnoted word within the grammar and you are taken directly to the appropriate footnote text at the end of the book. However, once there, you have nothing to click on that will send you back to your original spot in the body of the book. You simply have to hop back to wherever you were using the scroll bar at the foot of the page. Relatively quick and easy, but I would have appreciated some form of "One-click Return" to my original page in the book. That is a significant oversight I think. Deduct another 2/10ths of a star.So, with these caveats, I give the Kindle Edition of this book 4.7 stars. Not enough to reduce it a full star, though. Not after the thoughtful inclusion of so many other features.Bottom line: I am quite pleased that I purchased the Kindle Edition over the print. If you are debating between the Kindle and the paper, you should have no hesitation about the Kindle version interacting with the Henle textbooks, or with its readability, completeness, clarity or ease of use. And with the Kindle, you have the advantage of a top-notch grammar in your pocket or bag all the time.

Clearly printed, easily read with good-sized font. Wide margins and space between topics provide lots of white space preventing visual confusion. Lots of simple, easily-understood examples are given. This is the most attractive "user friendly" Latin Grammar I have seen

Short read if you already have a solid understanding of the basics of Latin. YouTube has great videos to get one started, this gives the absolute foundation. Necessary if one aspires to write or translate English to Latin.

My son will be starting his first year of Latin in the 2018-19 school year, so I purchased this series to get a jump start on my understanding. These books are written in a concise, easy-to-follow format, which I appreciate. I do also like that they are smaller & soft back, so it's very easy for me to thrown in my bag & carry along most anywhere.

Love Henle latin for my homeschool kids. Henle is very systematic and fairly organized in his presentation of latin concepts and vocabulary. I like the format and the incremental lessons. It's provided a good latin foundation for their college studies later on.

All the clauses are covered, conjugations, declensions, rules for time, gender, etc. Prepositions are given special attention as well as methods of diagraming. Everything and anything anyone would need to know in order to gain a better understanding of the Latin language is within this books covers.Thus, this text is great for the beginner as well as the more learned student of the language. Moreover, is â€œevangelical(ism)â€ even an appropriate label to be lobbying around today? Kevin J. Vanhoozer and Daniel J. This anchor is held in place by two theological foundations: (1) ecclesiologyâ€”the church as the representative household of God, and (2) bibliologyâ€”the Scriptures as a mirror reflecting the form and content of the Bible on our teaching.For Vanhoozer and Terier, evangelical theology can be effectively distilled down to the pursuit of wisdom, via â€œtheological interpretation of Scripture,â€ actively amid the drama of the churchâ€™s worship and witness (p. 40). The first part of the book, chapters one and two, seek to frame the discussion ontologically in an investigation into the gospel of God and the God of the gospelâ€”specifically the reality that exists behind the mirror of Scripture in the triune Godheadâ€”and epistemologically in the testimony of Scriptural knowledge, and the way that biblical truth is preserved as doctrines come into focus through time and across cultural space (p. 41).This first section provides the reader with a working framework for understanding evangelical theology, and the second part seeks to helpfully furnish the empty house that was previously built. The second part of the book, chapters three to six, defines and defends theology as the wisdom of the people of God collectivelyâ€”a wisdom that is ultimately dependent on a proper theological interpretation of Scripture. Moreover, the wisdom that arises out of a theological interpretation of Scripture has a primary goal of serving the people of God as they live on mission corporately.Theology and the Mirror of Scripture concludes with a strong and appropriate call for the reader to live theologically within the context of the community of Godâ€™s people. It is here that theology, that is â€œmereâ€ evangelical theology, finds its ultimate purposeâ€”to help the church glorify and enjoy God forever (p. 255). In a day where it may be easier to peg Jell-O to a wall than articulate an evangelical theology, Vanhoozer and Terier have produced a clear and compelling volume. 2016 has, to many, seemed to be the year in which the word â€œevangelicalâ€ has been completely watered down to nothingness. â€œEvangelicalâ€ has become a word that carries virtually no distinction and thus no meaning; everything from the mediaâ€™s misuse of the word to the broadness of its use in churches have contributed to this. But rather than throw the word out, what if we simply need to recover its meaning? Vanhoozer and Treier wonâ€™t have the repudiating of this word on the basis of what it has socially become. Instead, they seek to hold onto it because of what it means about the gospel (11). The goal of the book is simple. â€œPart one sketches an agenda for evangelical theologyâ€¦part two analyzes in greater detail how that agenda applies to the evangelical theology currently being practicedâ€ (41).In the opening chapter, Vanhoozer and Treier set out to try to begin by coming to a consensus on how we should think about defining and identifying what â€œevangelical theologyâ€ itself is. They build their argument on an understanding of evangelical theology as an â€œanchored set.â€ This idea of an anchor is a wonderful word-picture for the discussion. Anchors, of course, are an immovable weight, a tool that prides itself on sturdiness. But the anchorâ€™s primary function is to help the boat from moving. The anchored set of theology, then, should be defined â€œnot only by its anchor but by the limited range of motion.â€ This is what Paul was describing when urging the Church to not be carried about by winds of doctrine. Vanhoozer and Treier go on to show that the gospel events are rooted in the very being of God (81). Chapter 2 turns its focus towards how Scripture plays the role of mirror, that it carries authority, and helps us understand the differences between first-level, second-level, and third-level doctrines.With a foundation laid, Chapters 3-6 grow a bit more focused in nature, as Vanhoozer and Treier go on to outline approaches to mere evangelical theology. One must look at it as the pursuit of communal wisdom and the exegesis of Scripture, and these are two particular themes expounded on heavily in this book. Most importantly, theology, as the authors show, is not simply for the purpose of heady scholarship. Theology affects our very ecclesiology, and this book makes a case for that.Here are some of my favorite excerpts:â€œAt their wisest, then, theological interpreters stand with unveiled faces before the light of Scripture, soak it up and say what they see. Doctrine is not a dull and dry substitute for biblical discourse but a means of catching its light, and perhaps of seeing further into the mirror.â€ (105)â€œThe Christian life is not one of solitary confinement but of life together, in community; similarly, interpreting Scripture is not the prerogative of lone exegetical rangers but of the gathered church, a creature of the word and hence an interpretive community.â€ (111-112)â€œDifferences over the first level are fundamental, while at the second level they are church-dividing but acceptable within evangelical cooperation. Third-level variety is possible within ongoing, close congregational fellowship. The goal should be to avoid the collapse of first order doctrines and obsession or schism over third-order doctrines.â€ (209)This is an excellent opening volume of InterVarsity Pressâ€™s â€œStudies in Christian Doctrine and Scriptureâ€ series, and I couldnâ€™t be happier to commend it to you. Vanhoozer and Treierâ€™s prolegomena of how we must approach evangelical theology, from definition to practice, is an excellent tool filled with tons of wisdom.

I loved using this book in our homeschool history reading around St. Patrick's day! It had a lot of interesting facts and legend that the kids engaged with! My kids are 3-7 yrs and I wanted them to know St. Patrick was NOT a leprechaun!!

Feiler has traveled and written about life in Japan, the circus, England, and the Biblical Middle East. In this post-9/11 book, he returns to Israel from Manhattan and explores the history and lore, from the perspective of three monotheistic faiths, surrounding the patriarch of ABRAHAM. Maybe Feiler was destined to write this book. His mother's maiden name means "House of Abraham", and the Bar Mitzvah parshat of both Feiler and his brother was "Lech Lecha", the biblical story in which Abraham is told by god to "go forth" and be himself. Coincidentally, or eerily, I read this slim book on a flight in which I, a Jew, sat between a Muslim and a Catholic nun. And like the mixed nuts that were served on the jet flight, this book is a nice appetizer to further, deeper study -- it is a brief, light, enjoyable, comforting, hopeful, and even humorous read. Feiler tells the reader that The Akkedah story is read at both Rosh Hashana as well as the Eid al-Adha. And obviously a father sacrificing his son is critical to Christian liturgy as well. To Muslims, Abraham is the first Hanif, and to Christians he is the father of faith. In this book, Feiler explores how three faiths invented stories around Abraham to reinforce their worldviews and to reflect upon their times; they even swapped stories, like the story about how Abraham visits Ishmael in his later life. I found the chapter on Christianity most enlightening, especially Feiler's quick discussion on St Augustine's views on Abraham and the Jews.

This is a wonderfully objective exploration of the story of Abraham â€” historically, geographically, philosophically, theologically and politicallyâ€”from the perspective of all three Abrahamic religions. The story does not sugar coat the profound disagreements among religious traditions. There are parts of this book that are depressing and ugly. But the author expertly challenges the dogmatic views by pointing out how they are inventions of convenience, created at times when each of the religions was suffering from an existential crisis and called on Abraham to bolster their authenticity. Ultimately, the question is whether Abraham can become a unifying force, rather than a divisive one. Can the three religions accept that they each have their own story of Abraham but, just as we have accepted that we all worship the same God, can we also accept that we also believe in the same Abraham? It is a question worth pursuing for the sake of peace.

Highly Recommended! I read 30-40 books per year, as a Senior Pastor. This is one of only a handful of texts that I would recommend for those interested in an objective view of Abraham from the perspective of other religions/faiths. The hypocrisy on many levels in the western version of Christianity is overwhelming at times; this text takes the reader into the minds of how others view and adopt Abraham as their spiritual Father with the same vigor as the western culture. ...this reading is not for faint-hearted; those weak in their faith; or narrow thinkers. If you're truly open to "learning" not just reinforcing what you already believe, this book will stretch you. Great read!

In our current times, when some are trying to foster hate at every turn, separation, and re-build the walls that divide â€œusâ€, â€œthemâ€, and â€œthose peopleâ€, this book reminds us that while different religions have journeyed along different roads we are all trying to reach the same place, learn the same lessons, have endured similar heartbreaks and aches, suffered together and apart, enjoyed the same traveling companions, and in the end, hopefully, will all arrive on the same mountaintop having attained the same enlightenment.The book is broken up into a well written explanation of Abrahamâ€™s significance and importance to three of the worlds major religions and though different, explains how much they have in common in Abraham. Wonderful book for individual reading or your small adult study group.

This chronicle of Bruce Feilerâ€™s search for the true story of Abraham is well-researched and engaging. The authorâ€™s discussions with Abrahamic scholars and clergy of the three faiths are enlightening. Each of the three religions claim Abraham as their patriarch. However, their relationships with Abraham are very different.I recommend this book to anyone interested in the study of Abraham, and his relationship to each of these major religions.

This is the third book Feiler wrote regarding the Holy Land, his travels there, the geography and the people (then and today). In this book, he sets out to find the "real" Abraham only to learn there are some 240 real Abraham's. In the end, he concludes it is in Abraham we find hope for reconciliation and resolution. He makes a very compelling case.

This is a great book, for kids to have their Birthday Parties. Kids love Parties and so this should be a very helpful book in planning Parties.

This book lacked things like putting the page number so can quickly find the party theme. So you page through until you find it. Once I got there it had the basic things you or I would come up with. Then they go on to says invitations, decorations, games, activities, food and favors but again then you have to search in other places to find each topic. No pictures!However once you get to Invites there are 8 different ideas. Same goes for decorations, games, activities, food and favors.Within each section there are some really cute ideas, recipes on how-to.Over all the book is helpful and cute ideas and themes, just not put together well.

This book was a fabulous book, I was looking for some ideas for an upcomming birthday and have been inspired!! This book has the basics of how to plan a great party, invitations, games, food, favors, it has it all. Outstanding!!!
