Naan Kadavul Movie Review - Aarya, Pooja, director Bala Naan Kadavul Movie

The Movie:

The long wait for Bala's Naan Kadavul has finally ended. The movie that took more than three years in the making is a disturbing tour into the dark world of people with deformities who are made to beg for a living and their search for God. Naan Kadavul, meaning "I am the God", makes one question the very existence of God.

The Story:

The story opens with a father coming to Varanasi in search of his son Rudran, whom he had left there in 14 years ago following an astrological prediction. Rudran (Aarya) grows under an aghori guru into an angry young man following the preaching of his guru. According to myth, a person blessed by an aghori won't have to go through the cycle of births and deaths an ordinary human being is destined to. He accompanies his father to Tamil Nadu, only to severe his relationship with his family and return to Kasi. He lives an isolated life in a cave temple smoking weed and blowing conch at unearthly hours.

The temple also hosts a group of beggers employed by a locan goon. The scenes which show the dungeons where the beggers live and the brutal treatment unleashed on them by the goon are disturbing. Amsavalli (Pooja), a blind girl, is forcefully separated from her foster father and brought to the gang. The cry for help of these poor people never reaches the ears of God but Rudran, who declares himself God 'Kaala Bhairav', the destructor of evil.

Coincidentally, Rudran becomes Amsavalli's saviour. How he saves her forms the climax of the film.

Performances:

Surprisingly, for all the hype, Arya does not have that much of screen time though he does make an impact whenever he appears. He doesn’t have much to work with though. He has always got the same stoic expression, uttering the same intonations and striking the same poses. But getting to maintain that demeanor is not easy and he has worked hard to do it which can be seen. Aara, despite being the protagonist, has few dialogues and, contrary to what was expected, has little to perform, too. It is Pooja as Amsavalli who gives an extraordinary performance. This movie will be milestone in her acting career. Another person who has given a noteworthy performance is comedian Krishnamoorthy (remember the man who once asks Vadivelu the way to Osama Bin Laden's house ?). Krishnamoorthy as Murugan is a surprise package for the audience.

Verdict:

Naan Kadavul is a typical Bala movie, on the lines of Sethu, Nandha and Pithamagan. His movies always deals with subjects not discussed often. The movie, which has received U/A certification, is certainly not for kids to watch. Dialogues penned by Jayamohan are sarcastic and touching. Music by Ilayaraja is ordinary, except for two songs.

An extraordinary movie with a complex subject that it is, Naan Kadavul could have been dealt with only by Bala.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5. Go and Watch it!!!

Thalai of Tamil film industry, Ajith is gearing up for his next film Asal, Produced by Sivaji Productions. This new film will be Ajith's 49th venture and will be directed by Saran. Expectations are high on the film as Ajith and Saran had earlier teamed up to render hit films such as Kadhal Mannan, Amarkalam and Attagasam earlier. The musical score for Asal will be done by Harris Jayaraj and the shooting of the film will be launched by the end of March.

Ajith who would be playing an action role in the film has gone in for a drastic change in his looks like his earlier movies Citizen and Varalaru.

He will be sporting a walrus like long mustache( like Kamal Hassan's look in Virumandi). Remember that Late Sivaji Ganesan also spotted this look in Thevar Magan. He has also reportedly lost considerable weight and looks like a 20 plus young hero. Prabhu will play a cameo role in this project. This is Ajith's one of the prestigious projects and it will be produced by actor Prabhu under the banner of Sivaji Productions.

The film is rumoured to be an action packed one and will present the hero as a tough encounter cop in it. For the role of a cop, Ajith have become meaner and fitter and has lost weight after undergoing rigorous workouts. Sameera Reddy will be spotting with Ajith for the first time in the film. For all 'Thala' Ajith's fans, the movie will be a big treat to happen.

The Oscar nominated "Milk" and "Slumdog Millionaire" won top honors Saturday at the Writers Guild of America Awards.

Script-writer Dustin Lance Black won the original screenplay award for "Milk," a biography of murdered slain gay-rights leader Harvey Milk.

The adapted screenplay award for "Slumdog Millionaire" went to Simon Beaufoy, who based it on a novel by Vikas Swarup about an Indian street orphan's journey of survival and love.

The low-budget flick "Slumdog Millionaire" has been an unlikely hit saved by cloud-nine angel. Being roped with 10 Oscar nominations, including best picture, and also has taken awards at the Golden Globes and from the Producers Guild of America, Directors Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild.

The Movie:

'Actor-Choreographer-Director' Prabhu Deva and Vijay teams up once again after the huge of success of their earlier movie Pokkiri with their recent film 'Villu'. The movie Villu will be a ‘Power pack Pongal’ for all Vijay Fans. The Die-Hard Vijay Fans in USA are excited to taste the feast two days prior to release in India. After the two not so good movies in Vijay's recent carrier such as Azhagiya Tamizh Magan (ATM) and Kuruvi, Vijay is back in form with his usual 'heroic' acting with a rigid formula everyone in the theatre expect only a Mass entertainer from Vijay. As a director, Prabhu Deva has done his best to maintain all the commercial spices needed to give a complete Vijay movie - with super hero intro, romance ,comedy, several fights, item songs and finally hero wins over the baddies.

The Story:

In the first half, the movie starts with the introduction of Pugazh (Vijay), a local area super hero who is the savior of poor and the needy. He acts as a Villu (arrow) of a Senior Police officer Manoj K Jain and follows secretly his instructions. In his mission he targets international Dadas and he makes love to Jhanvi (Nayantara) as a part of the mission (!!!) , who, as anticipated, is the Main Dada Prakash Raj’s daughter. In the second half, the story sets a flash back to slowly reveal about who is Pughazh and why is he back of these dadas. Director Prabhu Deva has succeeded in keeping the suspense till the end. Though there are logical flaws here and there, story falls in some places.

The First half of the film rocks the theater with good comedy sequences and the major credit goes to Vaigai puyal Vadivelu. He tickles us every time he appears on the screen and especially his Nakka Mukka dance in front of Swiss Police is highly comical. Only Kids can enjoy his fight with the graphic cow. Nayanthara chills the screen now and then, its high time she start doing something than a regular heroine shouting at the hero and showing recession in costumes. She is the same in all her recent movies. Nayan, better try to act for a change !!

The music scored by Devi Sri Prasad rocks the floor in ‘Jalsa’ and ‘Nee Kova Pattal’ is nice to hear and to see. He could have worked more on BGM as they don’t sync with the movie, rather sounds too bold at unwanted places. ‘Vaada Maapla’ and item song ‘Daddy Mummy’ is gonna be sizzling in channels for the following days for sure. ‘Dheem Thanana Thillana’ is a good dance number and ‘Rama Rama’ is a typical Vijay intro song meant to bring out josh in his fans, Prabhu Deva shows his mark in all songs and Vijay has proved that he is no less a dancer than the director. Kudos to the Choreographers! Kushboo and Prabhu Deva’s special appearance in the song adds spice. Villian Prakash Raj fails to impress and has been wasted.

Camera man Ravi Varman did a nice job and has beautifully captured Zurich in songs and fight sequences are stunning. Prabhu Deva has brilliantly capitalized the talents of Ravi. Only one or two dialogues like ‘Enakku pottukudukka theriyadhu, Poda thaan theriyum’ pin the mind while others fly no where.

Verdict:

Villu has an entertaining first half, flash back in the second half is totally hindi ‘Soldier’ with added Tamil senti facts. Major Vijay, logic less Blue Ray Disc sequences, Drunk Nayanthara and no different villain Prakash Raj make the movie lag. Vijay imitates Superstar in some scenes which look very obvious and repetitive. Hero Vijay, song sequences, Cinematography and Vadivelu make ‘Villu’ a pretty good entertainer. On a whole, Villu will be a ‘Power pack Pongal’ for all Vijay Fans.

Salman Khan presented Ghajini painting to Aamir Khan

Aamir and Salman have been good friends for a while now. They are cool, charismatic, and super dynamic. Close on the heels of the release of Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na, the famous mamu-bhanja jodi of Aamir Khan and Imran Khan made an appearance on Salman Khan's popular game show '10 Ka Dum'.

Salman Khan being an avid painter is a fact that's now as old as the hills. The brawny actor is known to even gift his exquisite paintings to those whom he considers truly special. The latest person to benefit from Salman's generosity and love is none other than Aamir Khan.

The story goes that Sallu was so impressed by Aamir's performance in his latest flick ‘Ghajini’ that he decided to gift him two special paintings, done by Salman himself of course. The paintings, in keeping with the somewhat dark theme of the film, are in black and white and a noticeable aspect of both the paintings is the fact that both of them depict Aamir's by-now-famous ‘Ghajini’ hairstyle.

The paintings were unveiled at a special function at a Mumbai multiplex by ‘Ghajini's’ lead actress Asin. For those who came in late, Asin not only stars opposite Aamir in ‘Ghajini’ but also plays the romantic lead in the Salman Khan- Ajay Devgan starrer ‘London Dreams’.

Aishwarya Rai, Rajinikant Enthiran crew shooting at VIT, Vellore

Recently, director Shankar completed a shooting schedule for Endhiran (also referred to as Enthiran and The Robot) in the verdant campus of Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore (VIT). After many year Superstar Rajinikanth once again coming for a film shooting in Vellore region Tamilnadu. Superstar Rajinikanth, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan with Director Shankar and the entire crew shot some sequences at the premises of Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) near the Katpadi railway station. And as always, he successfully followed the “stealth policy”! The VIT shooting schedule was kept under wraps and no one from the media got wind of it. It was completed even while mediapersons were trying to “extract” news about the Endhiran shooting at Ennore. But the crew apparently vanished from Ennore one day and surfaced at the VIT campus on Christmas eve!

As usual, no one had a clue as to what was going on in VIT. Shankar and his crew arrived on December 24th to make all the arrangements; Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai arrived next day at 8:00 a.m. and the shooting took place amidst tight security. It is heard that the crew held its filming in “Technology Tower”, a building considered one of the structural marvels of VIT, a jewel in its crown. After knowing that the “Endhiran the Robot” shooting was made there were more than 10,000 people crowded around the spot to watch their Thalaivar Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai Bachcchan. The shooting spot was overcrowded with fans and the policemen had a tough time to manage them. Both the celebrities were rested at VIT luxury guest house.

The Story:

The story of Ghajini is about Sanjay Singhania (Aamir Khan) who suffers a short term memory loss and his daily routine is to watch photographs and look into the reminders to remind himself of the killing of his girlfriend. The story goes back in past and it is shown that Sanjay is a rich businessman owner of a cellular phone company named Air Voice . Once Sanjay gets attracted towards a young, vivacious fashion model Kalpana, (Asin) when he finds her helping people cross roads and falls in love with her. Kalpana has no clue that her boyfriend is one of the richest businessmen who owns one a leading cellular company. Kalpana who never saw him as the richest businessman, boasts of being Sanjay’s girlfriend in an interview in a local newspaper called Mayapuri.

Sooner, they fall in love and then the film goes to show the beautiful romantic relationship between the two. Then one day Kalpana saves a group of girls from eve teasers and she gets killed by the gang of criminals who were forcing girls into the flesh trade. Sanjay makes a futile attempt to save her from criminals and gets hit badly on head by an iron rod.

To avenge the death of his lover, Sanjay sets out on a mission to avenge her death. Sanjay is blank on memory and he enters a phase of life when everything comes to his mind for 15 minutes and then he forgets everything. He takes photographs, tattoos names and numbers on his body, and keeps notes and reminders to overcome his memory loss problem. Initially the medical practitioner Jiah Khan helps the villain to meet Sanjay but later when she reads in diary about Sanjay and she helps him to kill the villain “Ghajini.” The movie ends when Sanjay finds and kills the villain and takes revenge of his sweet-hearts death.

The Performances:

Aamir’s performance is brilliant in all fields be it romance or action. Asin too shows potential but is far too animated. Jiah Khan's acting shows immaturity and is strictly OK. The cinematography is commendable, the dialogues are in sync sound which is a huge advantage and the action sequences are top notch.

Asin Thottumkal is new to Bollywood and performance wise she is fine and she appears less sweet but a confident girl. Jiah is ok in her role.

The Music:
The music of Ghajini is scored by A.R Rehman's. Music of the film is average although romantic number “Guzarish” attracts and choreography of songs is good. Besides the song Guzarish, all the songs lack the melody and trademark of the maestro.

Conclusion:

At three-and-half-hours, the movie is extremely long and could have been edited better. Though it lacks pace, not too many can complain about the film being boring. Script is catchy but the suspense could have been extended. Director takes up a new script to show. The film is not a romantic feel good kind of movie but those who were bored to see too much love and goodness in “Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi” can go to watch Ghajini for a change. The film has much violence, actions that may not be enjoyed by kids and families but youngsters will like to see the power packed action scenes and changed look of Aamir.

Verdict:

‘Ghajini’ is a so called sure ‘Hit’ film, as it offers all that masala which has been prepared with that sure success formula.
