The silky bantam hens are abundant layers - some even lay eggs with a pretty, light colored green shell. They make quiet, quaint pets with individual personality's for the children.

Other hens are larger and more robust and come in a variety of colors; black, brown, white or speckled. They all eat bugs, snails and slugs - good news if you are trying to slim down the number of these pests around the yard!

Did you know that hens are able to eat the Sydney funnel web spider without any ill affects? They make your yard a safer place to be and double as a pet for the children.

Chickens can be purchased as week old or over a week. You can buy them fully grown as well, but they make better pets when bought young. Make sure you buy from a reputable breeder who can tell what sex they are. The neighbors will not be pleased to be woken at dawn by a rooster crowing.

A young chicken will need to be kept inside where it will be safe and warm, until it grows older. A newspaper lined cardboard box with sawdust or straw in the bottom is fine. A day old chicken will benefit from the extra warmth of a pretend mother. To make one of these, push many strips of fabric through a strong piece of cardboard and hang it so it dangles to the floor of the box. This would be a good project for the kids. Chicky will run straight into it and be perfectly content. Alternatively, you could use a new mop head.

To make a drinking trough that the chicken will not drown in or tip over, take an empty tin can and hammer a hole through each side just under the rim. Fill with water and place a saucer over it. Invert the whole quickly and you will see that water trickles out of the holes, but stops when the level rises to the rim of the saucer. It's a fascinating experiment for the children. Another tin to hold the special chicken growing mash is all you will need. Of course, keep the bottom of the box clean and dry.

When the chicken is grown up, change the food to laying pellets and gradually introduce chopped kitchen scraps. It will eat what it wants and leave the rest to be castaway with the soiled sawdust. If you have a garden, this is excellent fertilizer.

The hen will need a warm, dry place to live outside. An old coop is fine, but it's not much trouble to hammer in some stakes and wrap wire mesh around them. This will keep the hen safe from stray dogs while you are away. If it flies out, cut the long wing feathers back to about half, on one wing only. This will not hurt the hen, but will stop it from flying.

Remember that a hen is actually a bird and it is natural for birds to roost in trees. Make a perch for your hen by poking an old broom handle through the mesh of its cage under the roof, but about 3 feet from the ground. Check on whether your hen is actually roosting. Some hens need to be taught. Dusk is the right time to gently pick up the hen and place it on the perch. It will soon understand what it is supposed to do.

A small drum, box or even a dog kennel filled with straw will make an ideal nest for your hen to lay eggs. If you use a larger dog house, it can double as a nest and a night shelter too, with the simple addition of the perch. Or if you have a garden shed, the hen will not mind sharing with a few rakes and spades. If you live in an area where the winters are cold, it will be best to keep your hen in the barn or shed.

As with any hobby, take your time, enjoy and learn along the way! They feed on pests, insects and food scraps; loosen up the soil and pull out weeds by scratching; making the soil fertile and of course laying eggs. Keeping chickens in the back garden however may pose some trouble than benefits. Their habitual scratching could destroy your young plants and certainly you really don't need fertilizing your concrete or brick pavement, if there is any. If you really want to keep chickens in your back garden for whatever reason, keep them in a confined space. So what is the purpose of keeping chickens in the back garden anyway? There are several, depending on the intended use by the owner. This would also dictate on what kind of chicken breed you will buy and the types of holding places you will construct for this wonderful enterprise of chicken raising. Here are the top reasons for keeping chickens in the back garden:

1) As pets Chickens as pets is not as much a popular idea as chicken as food. But many are getting the hang of it because really, chicken are engaging, easy to train, and fun loving animals with personality, that is if you look at them from a different perspective other than looking forward to them as something to eat. They could be loyal companions and would even rest on your lap if given the proper training and attention. For this you wouldn't mind them roaming freely in your garden. But if you happen to live in a predator-infested area, you have to a make a closed and guarded chicken-run or holding pen for your pet chickens. Examples of ideal chicken breeds for pets include the Jersey Giant, Bhrama, and Bantams.

2) For meat There are people who are fed up on buying those bland, cage-raised dressed chicken from the supermarkets so they go about doing the task of keeping chickens in the back garden for personal consumption themselves. With this, they can ensure the quality of life and ultimately, the quality of meat their homegrown chicken will have. You could well give this a try, that is, if you will find ways of humanely killing your chicks without shedding a tear or two.

3) For eggs Finally, eggs! This is the staple of the chicken business and you might as well cash in with this multi-million industry, although on a small-scale level - well, smaller than that. Whether you want to produce eggs for personal consumption or for profit, you should pay more attention to the living conditions of your laying hens and the construction of you chicken coop that would provide the best conditions for laying eggs. The internet is a great resource for information about keeping chickens in the back garden for egg production so it would hurt if you click that mouse a few times if you're really interested. Apart from making great pets, chickens pay for themselves with eggs. So why not take a step towards being more self sufficient and start keeping chickens in your garden?

Chickens are easy to look after, and they only need cleaning out once every couple of weeks. They will find most of their own food in your garden as they eat mostly grass and insects. Although they will also need some corn or layers mash once a day, as well as a supply of fresh water.

They make lovely pets and can quickly become very tame. A good tip is to whistle every time you feed them, then when you whistle your chickens will coming running down the garden to see you!

Your average hen will produce about 280 eggs per year, which means you will probably have some left over to give to friends and neighbors in return for looking after them when you are away!

Hen houses are easy to come by and they don't have to look bad in your garden. There are a few which are painted and look very attractive. Some even have plastic floors which makes your life even easier. I would avoid ones which are made from just plastic though, they can get bad condensation inside. My chicken coop is made by Oakdene Coops, Chicken coop

Chickens are also great with children as they don't try to escape like most pets might! Also collecting the eggs in the morning is very rewarding and exciting for children and adults alike!

Chickens come in many many different breeds, there are 100's to choose from! They vary greatly in size, colour, character and egg production. Hybrid hens lay the most eggs (300+ per year). Other breeds such as the light sussex lay a similar amount of eggs but are arguably more attractive.

Bantams are another option, they are smaller than normal chickens, and thus require less space to keep. If you will go to various food shops and restaurants, you will find several recipes using chicken as their main dish or sometimes, a side dish. To cut a long story short, chicken has been the most widely eaten food since time immemorial. Therefore, you must take care of them from the time they were hatched until they are ready for cooking. But for this to happen, you should know how to raise chickens first. You can follow these five useful methods of improving your flock.

1. Build coops Just like any other pets, chickens need a place to stay. They cannot be seen inside your home running around with your children because it has its own place. You can make your own coop using wood or hard cardboard or just let the carpenters do this job for you.

2. Give them space No, not the space needed in a relationship; but the space needed by your chicken for grazing. Hens, on the other hand, need to have their own privacy. Because when they are exposed to other chickens, they may feel a lot more stressed that might cause delays on laying eggs.

3. Spend time with them Forming a bond between the master and the pet is included on how to raise chickens. If you neglect them, your feet can be pecked by their powerful and sharp, mid-length beaks. So, be very careful because they can get too aggressive when ignored.

4. Feed them with the right food What is right for you is also right for your chickens; except for worms and insects, of course. Your chicken must have a daily serving of grains that consist of corns, wheat, and barley. Bread, meat and fish scraps are also a good choice of feed for your chickens. If you want to know how to raise chickens using the right kind of food, try to feed your chickens a whole bunch of mealworms and fly larvae.

5. Know what type of fowl you will need There are so many types of fowl available in your local farm. If you plan to sell chicken meat, you can purchase roosters because they are rich in white meat. Venturing to egg selling is only possible if you have hens. You might also want to have chickens as pets or combination. Researching about the types of chickens will be a benefit since each chicken has different temperament and purpose.

These five useful ways on how to raise chickens are indeed helpful for beginners and oldies. Now, you can say to yourself that you can have your own flock even without the help of experts. Looking for more tips on how to raise chickens? The good news is that when it comes to the majority of chickens, they are not really picky about nesting sites and this means you don't have to spend too much money for buying overpriced nesting boxes. What you can do is actually design your own chicken coop nesting boxes at home and with some research on this you will definitely be able to build some nesting boxes to serve your purpose perfectly. Here is what you have to do:

1. Before you begin you have to decide on the type and number of laying hens you'd like to keep. You can easily choose from plenty of species. The variables in temperament and size of these chickens may impact the nest box designs you want to create. As a tip, for every 2 to 4 hens you should use a separate box. 2. When creating a nesting box you should ensure that it has the right size for your chickens. If you have average chickens, then the boxes should have at least twelve inches square, but you can also design them to be large enough so that the hens will be able to turn and stand comfortably.

3. The boxes should be designed in such a way that it will be possible for you to access the nest when you want to remove the eggs, check the hens or clean the nest. Boxes have to be secured in such a manner within the coop that you will be able to see the chicken without disturbing them, also the openings have to be big enough so that you will have no problems reaching for the eggs. This way, when chickens are injured or ill you can easily spot any problems and take timely actions.

4. You have to be careful with the materials and its best you go with types that can be easily cleaned and will ideally not allow parasites or bacteria to easily colonize. Even though most of the time people use wood, it's not such a great idea. This is because it allows for mites to dwell, but it's also hard to keep clean. But using plastic boxes or crates you will find they are much easier to wipe clean and sanitize. To make them even more functional you can just use a coat of non toxic paint or some wood sealer.

5. When building the nests you should think about using reclaimed items like 5 gallon plastic buckets, storage totes and plastic milk crates, laid on their sides after being cut in half. If you want you can also consider using old pet carriers which can easily be converted into nest boxes and are generally available at garage sales and thrift shops.

6. Lastly, the chicken coop nesting boxes should be placed off the ground, but don't consider putting them higher than the nighttime roosting location of your hens. This will allow the hens to feel safe about using the boxes you've designed and keep them from wanting to spend the night in the nests.

You can find an overview of effective Chicken Coop Plans and techniques Here is a example of a Chicken Pen on our site.

Related Articles - chickens, chicken coop plans, chicken coop ideas, keeping chickens, raising chickens,

Email this Article to a Friend!

Receive Articles like this one direct to your email box!Subscribe for free today!
How Much Is That Silkie Chicken in the Window

Are you considering adding silkie chickens to your family? Perhaps you know someone who would be thrilled to receive a few fluffy friends? With the resurgence of the backyard chicken coop in both rural and suburban settings, consumers have some options when it comes to chicken breeds and prices. Please keep in mind that the chicken breed as well as the specific breeder you settle on will have a far reaching impact beyond your wallet. Working with a reputable breeder greatly increases your chances of having healthy chickens. Include the chicken coops available on the market just too considerably for your price range? If this is the truth, then I highly recommend building your chicken coop.

You must know whatever you require simply uses choose the right coop plan for ones project. For anyone who is breeding hens for your recipient's use only, for a moment you end up being selling ova and hen chickens to others, and the way many birds will you need... many of these factors will determine the size of coop you will need, and the sort of chicken housing plan you need to be looking for. The right plan will be designed for both lasting and transportable coops, that can also get a new final cost of any project.

Provide roosting two poles for the birds because that is how they sleep! (And you thought they desired beds!) Be sure there is ample spacing so they really do not audience one another while roosting. You don't want to ruffle almost any feathers! They'll do that well enough on their own.

Economise by yourself the hassle in order to find chicken coop plans that make routine maintenance and washing simple. This should help you vastly in addition to economise you a lot of their time, since the thing you don't want is germs and other infected diseases thriving in your garden chicken house.

Breading and looking after chickens is an affordable way to guarantee a steady supply of fresh offspring without the tariff of supermarket rates for an encased dozen. The only major cash outlay would be the space and price of the chicken coop to household the birds safely in addition to securely. Industrial chicken coops are generally available online or perhaps pet stores and back garden centres, nevertheless the cost could be kept to the very least if you can build your or know someone who has the skill sets to help you. Everything you really need to achieve this task is a decent number of chicken coop plans.

The first thing you will require to know will be to consider the building materials how the coop plan will need anyone to get. That you do not really want any chicken shed that is made out of casks and adhesive. Though you would like quality substance its ideal to try to get most of the materials from in your home or even at a past chicken coop or maybe shed. Without having enough supplies then inquire your neighbors. They'll usually be a little more then happy to start freely giving some refuse wood that might be perfect for developing a coop with.

Step . 4: How much room do you calculate you'll need? Step # 4 is very considerably part of the preparing phase, and definately will depend on the breed and the number of birds you plan to property. Packing a great number of chickens in to a small living space is an occur; they'll want space to move about, nest, peck the earth and of course place their offspring, etc. Even though this recommended place will vary with regards to the breed, somewhere around 4 sq. toes. per chicken features proved plenty of for my tastes. You try out, but just fall flat with Chicken coop from day to day? There is a little something about best chicken coop plans that has people wondering.

Related Articles - Chicken coop, chicken coop plans, hen house, pets,

Email this Article to a Friend!

Receive Articles like this one direct to your email box!Subscribe for free today!
Get Your Raw Dog Food Information

For anyone who is considering raising chickens coupled with producing your very own chicken eggs, w

At this time many more people wish to know where their food items comes from and exactly how their foodstuffs is actually manufactured and reared.

Raising your own hen chickens coupled with gathering your own personal chicken eggs will mean that you really have control over what your own hen chickens will be fed and ways in which they're reared.

So you can feed your personal chickens with natural and organic poultry foodstuff and permit all of them to wander completely free on your private property.

All of your chickens will need a place to live, Chicken Arks that happen to be also known as Chicken Tractors in America, actually are compact movable chicken houses which can house up to 5 chickens.

Chicken Arks are perfect for a newbie, who really typically chooses to rear a few hens first off.

Eventhough hens are really simple to take care of, it is advisable to give 15 to 20 min's each day, for you to feed and also water the chickens, and make sure that their bedding is generally dry and clean.

If the chickens are often housed in a chicken ark or poultry hutch then you really should allow for 6 square feet for every chook within your hen run.

A hen run is where all of the chickens may roam freely, plus it ought to keep the hens secure and protected from predators.

Chickens happen to be sociable birds this means that you ought to keep no less than two to begin with.
