Will Corona Virus Hurt Backyard Chicken Keeping?

Many of us have experienced difficulty buying everyday items in the grocery store as a result of Coronavirus pandemic. Items such as toilet paper, canned goods, and pasta have been in short supply. In some areas, it’s also been difficult to get fresh eggs and this has created a surge in demand for baby chicks as homeowners look for alternative ways of getting staples – including buying chicks to produce eggs at home. According to CBS News, some retail chains are reporting a 30% increase in sales of baby chicks and some stores are limiting customer purchases to a specific number of chicks to cope with the demand.

While we at ChickenWaterer.com are here to support new owners with educational articles and advice, we have real concerns about novices acquiring birds first and asking questions later. Our greatest fear is that many of these chicks will end up at shelter facilities or, worse still, mistreated as owners who lose interest as soon as fears about the pandemic begins to wane.

Here are a few things novice owners may not understand:

They won’t be laying anytime soon –While baby chicks grow up very quickly they don’t begin laying until months after they are born. Hybrid egg laying breeds will lay their first eggs when they are approximately 4 months old. Heritage laying breeds at 5 months old, and dual purpose heritage breeds will lay when they are aged 5-8 months depending on the breed.
You may have overbought – 12 chickens may not sound like many, but a flock of that size can produce a dozen eggs a day. That’s more than most families can consume if there is no real shortage of food.
You may not be buying the right breed – Like dog breeds, chicken breeds can vary widely in their suitability for your family – level of docileness, level of broodiness, their ability to tolerate hot and/or cold weather etc. Buying chickens without understanding these differences can lead to a mismatch. The worst mismatch would be to buy the “pretty” chickens and then discover they aren’t very good egg layers (the reason you bought chicken’s in the first place)
Local ordinances – unless you live in a rural community, it’s likely your town has some restrictions on the number of chickens that you can be own and where a coop can be set up relative to the property line.
Straight what? - Many new owners may not realize that chickens can be sold sexed or in a straight run. Some new owners may be wake up one morning to find that their flock contains some cockerels. The neighbors won’t be pleased either.
Predators – Even suburban locations have populations of predators that can pose a serious threat to chickens including: raccoons, skunks, hawks, snakes, possums and even your neighbor’s dog or cat. All will kill chickens given the chance. Chickens need to be sheltered from such predators.
Chicken’s require work – Chickens are less labor intensive than other pets, but that doesn’t mean there’s no work involved in ownership. Chickens need to be fed and watered daily, eggs need to be collected and the coop needs to be kept clean. They also can live for 5 years or more. Buying chickens is a long-term commitment to caring for animals.

If someone you know is considering getting chickens, help them understand all of the above issues and/or point them to the ChickenWaterer Blog for more information.
Leave room in your coop – If you are thinking about adding to your flock this year, you may want to wait a bit. There are going to be many owners that underestimated the work involved or who simply lose interest in a few months. These chickens are going to need a home and it may be best if an experienced owner takes the reins.

Feeding Pumpkin to Chickens And A Chicken Jack-O-Lantern

October is fall harvest time and pumpkins play a big role in celebrating the season. Whether from your own garden, or from the farmers market, pumpkins are in abundance for the next two months. They show up at harvest festivals, as Halloween jack-o-lanterns and, of course as the star ingredient of Thanksgiving pumpkin pie.

Chickens - Frugal Eaters of Pumpkin Leftovers

Whatever your reason for cutting open a pumpkin this season, you may find that there are parts of the pumpkin that you have no use for -- specifically, the guts of the pumpkin that includes the seeds and the stringy parts.

While these may not be choice for us humans, chickens really enjoy them. When you open up your pumpkin pull out the pumpkin seeds and guts and give them to your chickens. They love them and it's a frugal way to give them a treat.

How about Leftover Jack-O-Lanterns?

Naturally, chickens will enjoy the choicer parts of the pumpkin that we humans relish. You can certainly feed pumpkin to your chickens. However, you need to be careful when feeding a used jack-o-lantern to your flock.

Pumpkins mold very quickly once cut open. The process is made worse when left outside for several days and after a lit candle has been inside the pumpkin warming it up for all sorts of wind borne mold and bacteria.

If you cut your pumpkin the day or two before Halloween, it's probably safe to give the left over jack-o-lantern to your flock. If the pumpkin has been sitting there for several days, it's more of a risk. Even if you don't see visible signs of mold, it doesn't mean that bacteria and mold aren't present in harmful quantities.

We recommend giving your flock pumpkin carved within 72 hours and removing any remaining pumpkins your flock hasn't eaten the following day.

In The Garden: Planting Onions & Garlic

Garlic and onions can be planted in either the Spring or in the Fall. At our home, we like to plant garlic and onions in the fall and harvest the bulbs the following spring. Growing onions and garlic over the winter tends to produce larger bulbs because the plants have a longer time to develop good root systems. There are also fewer pests to deal with during the winter months.

Most gardeners should plant onions in September or October. Garlic is generally planted a bit later -- October or November. A good rule of thumb is to plant garlic sets after your first major frost of the year.

Bulbs or Seeds?

Garlic is almost always grown from bulbs. Onions can be grown from either seeds or bulbs, but we plant bulbs because I find them so convenient. Onion and garlic bulbs (generally referred to as "sets") can be purchased from your local garden center, or from various mail order suppliers. You'll find that onion and garlic sets sold at the garden center are less expensive, but you won't have much of a selection. In fact, the onions sold at our local garden center are sold in bags that don't even list the variety, just "yellow onions" and "red onions."

Planting

Plant onions and garlic in full sun and in loose, well drained soil. The drainage is particularly important since very wet soils will cause the bulbs to rot.

To plant garlic, first separate the bulb into individual cloves. Plant these six inches apart in all directions. Garlic should be planted two inches deep into the soil with the pointed end of the bulb facing the sky.

Plant onions six inches apart in all directions. The pointed part of the bulb should be facing upward towards the sky and the tip of the bulb should be just poking out of the soil.

Onion Types

When selecting onion varieties, choose ones that are appropriate for your area. Onions produce larger bulbs in response to the number of hours of sunlight they receive. In the North, the amount of daily sunshine varies dramatically during the course of the year, with many hours of sunshine in the Summer and relatively few during Winter.

In the deep South, day lengths are much more consistent during the course of the year and summer days are not as long as they are in the North. So folks in the Southern U.S. should buy "short-day" varieties (bulbs start to form when there are 10-12 hours of sunshine) and folks in the Northern U.S. should buy "long-day" varieties (bulbs start to form when there are 14-16 hours of sunshine).

Intermediate-day onions fall between these extremes (bulbs start to form at 12-14 hours of sunshine). See the map below to determine which type of onion is right for you or check out the Gaisma web site which lists hours of sunshine by month for the U.S. and other countries.

Below are some onion varieties to consider, but do an Internet search for type of onions that will grow best in your geography (long, short and intermediate day):

Borrettana Cipollini onion - a small (2 inch), flat, yellow, long-day onion that is a good storage.
Red Wethersfield onion - a red, long-day onion that's shaped like a flattened globe. It's an heirloom variety from Wethersfield, Connecticut.
White Bermuda onion - a white short-day heirloom originally from Bermuda but now grow extensively in Texas.
Candy - A large, intermediate-day hybrid onion.

Garlic

Garlic falls into two main types -- soft neck and hard neck varieties. Soft neck varieties are characterized by bulbs with many cloves of unequal size. This is the type of garlic you most frequently find in the supermarket because they are easier to harvest mechanically and also have a longer shelf life.

Hard neck varieties, on the other hand, have bulbs that are smaller, but these bulbs are comprised of more uniformly sized cloves. Hard neck varieties also have a broader range of flavor profiles.

That said, garlic can vary tremendously in flavor with some varieties producing mild cloves and others that are so hot they'll blow your head off.

Here are a few worth considering:

Purple Glazer Garlic - a mild tasting, easy to peel, hard neck variety.
Music Garlic - a moderately hot, hard neck variety with high yields.
Chesnok Red Garlic - a mild strength almost sweet, hard neck garlic that is good for cooking.
Ontario Purple Trillium garlic - a very strong and very early maturing hard neck.
Italian Loiacono - a mild soft neck variety that stores up to 9 months.

Harvesting

Garlic and Onions planted in the Fall should be ready for harvest in June or July. Timing really depends on variety and your location. The best way to tell when to harvest is to observe for your plants for clues that it is time to harvest.

Harvest onions when the leaves lose their color and fall over. Once this occurs, leave the onions in the ground for another 10 days to allow the onions to reach full maturity. If possible, harvest onions on a sunny day since the bulbs will contain less moisture and will store better. After removing from the ground, cure in the sun for 1 day to kill the root system of the bulb. This also improves the storage life of your onions. Then store in a cool, dark and dry place.

Garlic is a little trickier. Wait till most of the leaves die back and turn brown, but before all of the leaves have toppled over as with onions. We recommend testing by harvesting a bulb or two and checking to see if they are mature. The bulb should be the appropriate size for the variety you are growing and you should be able to feel the individual cloves under the outer skin of the bulb. If so, harvest the garlic and then cure in a dry place for two to four weeks. Longer for very large bulbs. When storing garlic, we don't trim the leaves or the roots. We believe this helps preserve them, but there are more opinions on the best way to cure garlic than there are stars in the sky.

Beauty Tip: Egg White Face Mask

Egg white face masks seem to be the rage these days with many YouTube videos and home remedy books touting the benefits of egg white treatments. In truth, egg whites masks have been around since ancient times and were a staple of beauty books throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.

Egg White Face Mask Recipe

Here is a typical recipe and instructions for a typical egg white mask:

Place the white of one egg into a bowl.
Add a few drops of lemon juice
Whisk until the mixture is a froth.
Then wash your face.
Apply the face mask and let dry for 10 to 15 minutes.
Rinse your face with some water and pat dry.

Voila, a new and more beautiful you.

But does this home remedy really work? We did some checking and here's what we found....

Harper's Bazaar magazine article from 1919 recommends a face mask made from ground
barley, honey and a beaten egg white.

Egg Masks Work....To A Point

In 1965, two cosmetic chemists were asked to investigate the efficacy of Magic Secret, a wrinkle smoothing lotion sold by Helene Curtis, that contained albumen (a protein found in eggs, milk, and other animal and vegetable tissues) as the primary ingredient. The researchers conducted a test on 50 women and then reported the results in the Journal of Cosmetic Chemists.* Here's what they discovered:

As the albumen lotion dried, the subjects of the experiment felt a tightening sensation and that there was a noticeable reduction in wrinkles on their skin.
Under a microscope, the finest wrinkle lines became invisible and moderate wrinkles appeared more shallow.
The largest furrows around the eyes and mouth were not noticeable effected.
All individuals responded to the treatment, but to varying degrees.
The effect of the treatment lasted between 2-6 hours.
When the effects begin to wane, re-moistening the skin re-instated the effect.
The researchers concluded that the treatment worked because the albumen contracted as it dried and caused the skin within the wrinkle to rise upward so that the furrow became shallower.

The bottom line - albumen masks can improve the appearance of your skin, but the effects are temporary and the deepest wrinkles won't be effected.

Helene Curtis' Magic Secret was albumen. The product caused a
sensation when released in 1964.

Our Recommendations:

There is evidence that egg white masks can help temporarily hide small to moderate wrinkles. Since backyard chicken owners have plenty of eggs, the cost of trying an egg mask is pretty small and probably worth a try.
Although backyard chickens are less likely than those that live in commercial flocks to have salmonella, it is possible for your chickens to harbor this type of bacteria. Placing contaminated egg on the open pores of your face could pose a hazard, so only use clean and freshly laid eggs for egg masks and don't get any of the yolk into the mixture as the yolk is more likely to contain salmonella than the white.
If you suffer from acne, you may want to pass on this treatment entirely. The egg white can clog the pores of your skin and lead to an outbreak.

Three Awesome Quiche Recipes

Quiche is considered a French dish, but historically it traces its roots back to the Lothringen in medieval Germany. The original German quiche was an open pie made with a bread dough crust and filled with smoked bacon and an egg and cream custard. When the Lothringen became a French territory in 1871, the region was renamed Lorraine and hence the now very familiar quiche Lorraine.

Quiche is not hard to make and nothing is more satisfying than creating one using your own fresh-from-the-hen-house eggs. To make these recipes faster and easier, we recommend using a Pillsbury refrigerated pie crust.

Quiche Lorraine

Ingredients

12 strips of bacon
2 cup whipping cream or half & half
1/2 cup finely diced sweet yellow onions.
4 eggs
4 oz grated Gruyere cheese
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
Pre-made pie crust (Pillsbury etc.)

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Cook bacon in a skillet till crisp. Cut into small pieces and place into a bowl.
Add the cheese and onions to the bowl.
In a second bowl, combine whipping cream/half and half, eggs salt and pepper in a bowl. Whisk together ingredients.
Place crust into 9" glass pan.
Please the dry ingredients (bacon, onions, cheese) into the bottom of the pie crust.
Pour egg mixture into the pie pan.
Bake for about 40 minutes. Depending on temperature accuracy of your oven, the cooking process could take anywhere from 35-50 minutes, so test at 35 minutes and every 5 minutes thereafter. To test, place a knife into the quiche. If the knife, comes out clean, the quiche is ready.
Let stand 5 minutes and serve.

Bacon & Arugula Quiche

Ingredients

7 strips of bacon
1/2 cup chopped onions or shallots
5 ounces baby arugula or stemmed "full size" arugula
1 cup whipping cream or half & half
4 eggs
3 oz grated Gruyere cheese
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar
Pre-made pie crust (Pillsbury etc.)

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Cook bacon in a skillet till crisp. Cut into small pieces and set aside.
Add onions or shallots to pan and saute in the bacon fat over medium heat till tender.
Add arugula and cook for 1-2 minutes until wilted.
Add balsamic vinegar and stir. Remove from heat and set aside.
Combine whipping cream/half and half, eggs salt and pepper in a bowl. Whisk together ingredients.
Add grated cheese to egg mixture.
Place crust into 9" glass pan.
Please the contents of skillet into bottom of pie crust.
Sprinkle bacon on top of skillet ingredients you just placed into the pan.
Pour egg mixture into the pie pan.
Bake for about 40 minutes. Depending on temperature accuracy of your oven, the cooking process could take anywhere from 35-50 minutes, so test at 35 minutes and every 5 minutes thereafter. To test, place a knife into the quiche. If the knife, comes out clean, the quiche is ready.
Let stand 5 minutes and serve.

Mushroom & Onion Quiche

Ingredients

1/2 cup chopped onions or shallots
1/2 pound sliced mushrooms
1 tablespoon fresh chopped thyme or 3/4 teaspoon of dry thyme
1 cup whipping cream or half & half
3 eggs
1 oz grated Gruyere cheese
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 tablespoon butter
Pre-made pie crust (Pillsbury etc.)

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Place butter into a pan on medium heat.
Add onions or shallots and saute till tender.
Add mushrooms, salt and pepper. Increase to high heat and cook mushroom till tender, stirring constantly so they don't burn.
Add thyme and cook 1 minute. Remove from heat and set aside.
Combine whipping cream/half and half, eggs salt and pepper in a bowl. Whisk together ingredients.
Add grated cheese to egg mixture.
Place crust into 9" glass pan.
Please the contents of skillet into bottom of pie crust.
Pour egg mixture into the pie pan.

Flighty Chickens & Human Anxiety

According to a report in the Psychiatric Advisor, researchers at the University of Sweden may have identified the genes that cause some people to be more anxious than others by studying chickens. Yup, chickens!

As all chicken owners know, some chicken breeds are considered docile and others more flighty. The Swedish research team studied anxiety by crossbreeding domesticated Leghorns (less flighty) with wild Jungle Fowl (more flighty).

The team then placed the resulting hybrid offspring into a field trial where the birds were introduced to an unfamiliar environment and observed their behavior. More anxious birds tended to remain frozen with fear or darted about wildly while less anxious birds tended to explore their environment at a more measured pace. By then studying the genes of these birds they were able to identify 10 genes that appear to control anxiety in chickens. Three of the same genes in humans have been linked to schizophrenia, a disease that often overlaps with other anxiety disorders.

I suspect that the researchers chose Leghorns for the study because they are widely available and are less anxious than wild Jungle Fowl. However, it does appear an odd choice to us backyard chicken owners because Leghorns tend to be one of the more flighty of the domestic breeds. I would have thought an Orpington or Delaware to be a better choice based on their reputations as docile birds.

In addition to their eyes, chicken's sense light thorough a gland in their brains that lies behind a thin area of bone on their skulls. The gland produces a hormone in response to light and this hormone controls egg production.

Normally, chickens begin laying eggs in the spring when light levels exceed 14 hours per day. Producing more eggs in spring is a survival strategy; baby chicks are more likely to thrive in Spring and Summer when food is plentiful. Conversely, egg laying slows or ceases when light levels fall since this is a harbinger of leaner times to come.

The difference in light levels between Winter and Summer will be most pronounced in northern latitudes where daylight hours vary the most. The difference is due to the tilt of the Earth's axis. (For a detailed explanation of how the Earth's axis impacts hours of daylight, check out the video at the end of this post.)

Below are the number of daylight hours in December and June for three cities that represent northern (Boston), central (Nashville) and southern (Austin) latitudes in the United States. As you can see, in Boston there's a 7 hour variation between Winter and Summer hours of daylight. In Austin, this variation is only 3 hours. What this means is that flock owners in the South will see a less severe change in egg production in the Fall and Winter than those who live in the North.

Man Made Sunshine For More Eggs

If you want to boost egg production in Winter, the answer is to create a little artificial sunshine to increase the total amount of daylight hours. A chicken's photo-receptors don't distinguish between the sun and and a light bulb, so running a fluorescent or incandescent light inside the coop can re-start egg laying during the winter months.

To do this, increase the total daylight hours by turning on the light in the morning so that the there are 16 hours daylight and 8 hours of darkness in any given day.

Using an incandescent light provides an additional benefit as these lights also throw off quite a bit of heat. A 40 watt bulb placed inside the coop can keep the temperature of the coop above freezing. If you have a BriteTap poultry waterer or other chicken waterer that can freeze in the Winter, placing the waterer inside a coop with a light will also keep the waterer from freezing up. More eggs and no frozen waterer is a double plus in our book.

Halloween Chicken Pumpkin Template

Every year, we carve a unique pumpkin for Halloween. In the past, we've carved zombies, spiders, dragons and all manner of ghostly and ghoulish things. Never, have we done a chicken pumpkin. So this year, we're getting our priorities right and celebrating the flock with a chicken pumpkin.

This particular design is quite easy since you only have to carve out four relatively large sized pieces to complete the design.

If you'd would like to carve this design, you can download a PDF of the template and print it out on your home printer. The template will measure about 8" across so you should buy a large sized pumpkin to carve. The best ones will have smooth skin and shallow or no ribs.

Total project time is about 30 minutes.

Materials:

Thin serrated blade knife or pumpkin carving kit
Duct tape or masking tape
Large pumpkin
Metal spoon

Carving Instructions:

1. Print out the template from: http://bit.ly/1OYcMdl

2. Clean out the center of the pumpkin as you would with any Jack-o-lantern -- cut open the top and scoop out the inside with a metal spoon.

3. Tape the template to the pumpkin using masking or duct tape. This will allow you to more easily transfer the design to the surface of the pumpkin. To do this, trim off the excess paper that is outside of the boundaries of the design and make some slits on the template so you can get it to conform to the overall shape of the pumpkin.

4. Trace over the outline using a ballpoint pen. Press down hard so that the pen penetrates the paper and leaves a mark on the pumpkin skin. Some sections will show ink and other will only show an indentation where the pen embossed a line into the pumpkin's skin.

5. Remove the template and draw over the embossed lines so that the whole design is fully inked and the lines are easy to see.

6. Mark four "X" on the pumpkin in the four sections of the design that are black on the template. These are the parts you want to cut out.

7. Carefully cut out the four marked sections.

This pumpkin is fairly easy to do. Below are some other designs we've carved in the past if you're looking for inspiration and don't want to do a chicken Jack-o-lantern.

Please note that these other designs are far more difficult to execute, so if you decide make something like this, set aside a few hours for the project.

How To Plant Garlic

Garlic For Strength

There's something about the strong smell and taste of garlic that historically has encouraged people to ascribe special powers to it. For example, everyone knows that garlic is said to have the power to ward off blood-thirsty vampires. If you eat garlic, and have not been bitten recently, you too can attest to garlic's amazing power.

That said, I'm not sure Dracula aficionados are aware that the Vikings revered garlic and fortified themselves by eating large quantities of it prior to departing on plundering raids.

A scary thought, eh? A horde of axe wielding Norsemen roll into town, burn the houses and steal the gold. Then, to add insult to injury, they celebrate with a banquet of garlic-laden bruschetta and stink the place up. No wonder people feared Erik the Red.

Well whether you're preparing to pillage your neighbors house or just making Sunday dinner, garlic can add a lot of flavor to you food. And the good news is that it's very easy to grow. Here's what you need to know to choose and grow garlic:

Hardneck & Softneck Garlic

Garlic is divided into two broad categories with different characteristics:

Softneck varieties have many cloves of varying sizes. Most supermarket garlic is of the softneck variety because it is easier to harvest mechanically and stores better than hardneck varieties. Softneck garlic also matures more quickly and can be grown in places where the winters are mild such as the Southern U.S. and California.

Hardneck varieties have fewer cloves of more uniform size. These grow around a central stalk. This type of garlic does better where winters are cold. They are more diverse in their flavor profile and are easier to peel than their softneck cousins.

Both hardneck and softneck garlics varieties can vary widely with regard to size, flavor, aftertaste, and storage capabilities. If you haven't really considered garlic before, I think you'll be surprised at the number of choices you have.

To get a sense for the range, I recommend wandering over to the Territorial Seed web site where you'll see over 50 varieties including: Chinese Pink, Belarus, Music, Spanish Roja, Duganski and German Red. For the Fall season 2015, I'm growing a new variety for me called Music. It's supposed to produce very high yields so I thought I'd give it a try. In the past I've and also grown Inchelium Red and Purple Glazer.

Below are a few descriptions of garlic that I'm reprinting from the Territorial Seed web site to give you a sense for the range of what's available:

Chinese Pink

Very early season. Garlic lovers rejoice! When fall planted, this extra-early-maturing variety will put fresh garlic back into your favorite recipes a whopping 4 to 6 weeks ahead of almost all others. You will be harvesting Chinese Pink late May to early June. All your garlic-loving friends will be green with envy. This fine quality softneck has cloves arranged in two layers, which makes most of the cloves of usable size. It has white outer skins, pinkish-purple inner skins, and pink clove wrappers; stores for 4-5 months. Chinese Pink has a nice mellow flavor that everyone can enjoy.

Inchelium Red Garlic
Mid-season. Inchelium Red is a national taste-test winner in the softneck division. This mild flavored garlic is great baked and blended with mashed potatoes. This large, top-quality softneck was discovered on the Colville Indian Reservation in northern Washington. Stores very well for 6-9 months.

Purple Glazer Garlic
Mid-season. You won't believe your eyes when you see the satiny clove wrappers of Purple Glazer. A vivid, royal purple tinged with shiny gold and/or silver hues makes this one of the most attractive garlics. As a sub-variety of Purple Stripe, a group known for being the "best baked garlic", Purple Glazer has a strong lasting flavor, but not hot and no aftertaste. Its texture is very palatable, like the consistency of cooked carrots. Very easy to peel.

Planting & Harvesting

Growing garlic is very easy. Just break the head of garlic into individual cloves and then plant these cloves in well drained soil about 6" apart and 2 inches deep in mild climates (3-4 inches deep in cold climates). When you plant the cloves, you want the pointed top of the garlic to face towards the sky.

The general advice is to plant garlic about a month before the ground freezes in your area. The easiest way to determine the right date, is to just do a Google search for "Garlic planting" and the name of your state.

Garlic planted in the Fall can be harvested in April/May in warmer climates and July/August in cooler climates. You'll know when to harvest because the leaves will turn brown. It's best to first harvest a few heads to make sure that they are of good size before harvesting the rest of the crop. You should also stop watering garlic about 2 weeks prior to harvest in order to help dry down the garlic heads.

BriteTap Chicken Waterer Tip

We wanted to share a nifty little tip for those that own the BriteTap chicken waterer.

The ports on the left and right side of the waterer allow owners to clean the inside of the BriteTap waterer. The size of the ports aren't an accident -- they are similar in size to typical wine and liquor bottle corks so that owners like you could use wine/liquor bottle corks in a pinch if the original red clean out plugs are lost or damaged. We call this "designed for real living" because the world isn't perfect - the kids can run off with a plug while you're not looking or you drop one into the sink's garbage disposer by accident etc. etc.

If you have a few corks laying around the house, you should hold onto them since they can be used as either a temporary or permanent solution to closing the clean-out-ports. Corks come in several diameters, so some corks will not fit. Those that do, will be a tight fit and will take some effort to insert.

The best type of "corks" are actually made of synthetic material, not natural cork. The synthetic cork doesn't change shape and will hold water better because it doesn't expand or contract as much as natural cork in response to temperature changes.

Of course, you can always order spare clean out plugs from us if you want to. You can find both regular and premium clean out plugs on our web site (see below). The premium clean-out plugs have a knurled plastic top that makes them easier to remove from the BriteTap waterer. If you have arthritis, these may be a good investment.

Some months ago, I received an interesting item in the mail from a favorite company of mine, located on line at www.ChickenWaterer.com. You may recall that I wrote, a year or so ago, about the BriteTap waterer (Product Review: BriteTap Chicken Waterer) …now the same group is offering a BriteTap feeder, and they kindly offered me a chance to try it out.

The new product for feeding chickens is advertised to keep “chick’s food free from contamination, is easier to fill than other chick feeders, and can be used outdoors to provide scratch, grit, mealworms, and oyster shells when the chicks mature and leave the brooder.”

Well, let’s see how the advertising holds up to my flock’s tests.

Food free from contamination: The first thing I noticed is that the shield prevents chicks from using the top of the feeder as a resting spot. No more droppings in the food. I liked that—not only it is cleaner, but saves money on feed.

The shield also protects the feed from rain, when it’s used in a yard, although heavy rain does cause some splash up and wind blows water and soil into a low hanging feeder, whether or not a shield is in place. I found the rubber gasket on the shield worked very well to keep rain from seeping in from the top. The flock scored this 15 out of 16 points.

Easier to fill than other feeders: The BriteTap feeder is nice, because I don’t have to fill the container, and then flip it over; I can use the nifty little scoop (which is included in the package)

and easily fill the feeder and screw on the top. No flipping and spilling. I’ll admit that two-piece feeder bases cause me some problems, especially when I’m in a hurry and the feeder is freshly filled. Unless the feeder base is aligned and turned, the bottom falls off and the feed goes into the pen. That, however, is an operator problem, but because of that, my flock scored this 16 out of 16 points and wanted to add more. They like it when the feed falls into the pen in a pile. Personally, I also give it 16 out of 16, because it is neater.

I noticed that an extra feeder tube is also available, so as chicks grow, the additional tube can be screwed onto the existing one and the capacity of the feeder increased. That’s a great idea. I tried this tube with small turkeys, and after they figured out how to eat out of it

(the shield made them nervous at first) they gobbled (pun intended) their feed quickly. Meat birds, particularly, finish their allotted feed in record time and want more immediately. An extra feeder tube would be handy.

Used outdoors when chicks mature: I haven’t yet tried this feeder with scratch, but I’m certain my flock will approve. (Anything involving scratch receives 16 out of 16 from my girls.)

When I first received this feeder, I had no chicks, so I used it first in the yard for the mature hens. I hung it on a low hook, filled it with grit, and let them try it out. Even hung as low as it was, the girls easily figured it out and gathered around to try it out.

The claims in the advertising are all true.

Additionally, I’d like to mention that one of my favorite features is the separate top of the tube feeder—specifically the loop attached to the top. I use hanging feeders in the coop for the laying hens—floor litter stays out of the feeder and the height and swinging motion really deter chickens from standing/sitting/roosting/ on top of them. A hanging feeder for small chicks is great. It can be hung very low and raised as they mature; they learn early on the trick to grabbing feed from a swinging feeder (which is one less scary thing to have to figure out when entering the world of Big Hens); and it is, of course, easier to keep clean.

I have found the ChickenWaterer company to be a delight to work with, and their products receive high marks from me AND my flock. And yes, I did receive a complimentary BriteTap feeder kit, but the comments are all my own (with just a bit of assistance from my 16 hen investigative crew).

Backyard Flocks & Salmonella: Our Perspective on the CDC's Warning

The CDC recently issued guidance to backyard flock owners encouraging them to wash their hands after handling chickens and advising against cuddling or kissing poultry. The reminder comes in response to related data showing that 181 people have sickened with Salmonella poisoning this year as a result of exposure to backyard flocks. The CDC's data and guidance has been been widely reported by the press including NBC, Reuters, NPR and others.

While we support the CDC's guidance, we believe the widespread media attention leads to a distorted picture of the dangers of keeping poultry. This article provides additional data that puts recent media reports in perspective.

Salmonella Outbreaks Related To Poultry

According to the CDC, there were major outbreaks of poultry related salmonella in each of the last few years. What's clear is that the number of cases in any given year is well below 1,000 individuals.

2015 - 181 illnesses (year-to-date)
2014 - 363 illnesses
2013 - 514 illnesses
2012 -334 illnesses

Salmonella & Other Illnesses Related To Food

Now let's compare this data to the CDC's data on total cases of salmonella resulting from exposure to contaminated food. The first table shows number of illnesses related to a specific type of pathogen (bacteria, virus etc). The second table shows total cases of food poisoning related to any type of pathogen.

Salmonella sickens over 1 million Americans each year

1 in 6 Americans (48 million) get food poisoning each year

OK, so here is the sad truth.... Over 1 million Americans are sickened by Salmonella each year as a result of consuming improperly prepared food. Frequent sources of infection include oysters, ground beef, chicken, and vegetables. In most cases, the symptoms are upset stomach, vomiting and diarrhea. In severe cases, it the illness can cause dehydration and death.

Even more common is food poisoning related to Norovirus. This is the type of virus that has effected many cruise trip travelers. Norovirus sickens about 5 million people each year.

And the CDC estimates that almost 49 million Americans will be sickened each year by one form or another of food borne pathogen. That's one in six people in the U.S.

Even good food can carry salmonella and other pathogens. Take care to wash and properly cook all food.

Conclusions From The Data

Backyard chicken owners are much more likely to pick up Salmonella and a host of other gastrointestinal diseases from consuming food from their refrigerator or from a restaurant than they are from their backyard flock.

Chicken owners should follow the CDC's advice and wash their hands after touching birds. It is also good advice not to cuddle or kiss your chickens, but there's no reason to be particularly concerned about becoming sick from your backyard flock.

Top Feed Supplements For Chickens

To stay healthy and laying, chickens need a balanced diet that gives them the protein, carbohydrates and vitamins they need to sustain themselves. In a prior article on choosing a feed, we discussed chicken feed formulas and provided guidance on when to switch from one feed formula to another.

In this posting, we focus on feed supplements. These are food items that complement or enhance your chickens basic diet. You'll find these below grouped by dry and liquid supplements.

Dry Supplements

Scratch - scratch is a mixture of whole, rolled and cracked grains including corn, oats, and barley. Formulations vary from brand to brand and many feed stores make their own mixes. Scratch is candy for chickens and they love it. However, it tends to be high in carbohydrates and low in protein. Therefore, it should never account for more than 10% of your chicken's diet. You can give your chickens scratch year-round, but it is especially beneficial during the winter months when chickens need extra carbs to keep their bodies warm.

Grit - Grit is mixture of small stones, generally granite, that are given to chickens to help them digest their food. The food enters the gizzard (part of the chicken's digestive tract) and the gizzard then squeezes the food particles against each other and the grit to make the food particles smaller and easier to digest. The grit works in much the same way that a millstone grinds wheat into flour. If you feed your chickens only pelleted food, you really don't need to provide grit because the food is already finely ground. However, if you feed your chickens scratch, table scraps or mash you should provide scratch as well to help your chickens digest these larger food items.

Oyster Shells - Chicken owners often get oyster shells and grit confused when providing supplements. Oyster shells and grit function completely differently and should be given for different reasons. Whereas grit assists digestion, but has no nutritional value, oyster shells are a nutritional calcium supplement, but do not assist in digestion because they dissolve before they can act as a millstone. Oyster shells are given to laying hens to provide extra calcium needed to produce strong egg shells (egg shells are about 95% calcium carbonate by weight).

A Supplement Feeder

If you want to provide dry supplements to your chickens, check out the BriteTap Supplement/Chick feeder. Table Scraps - As a general rule of thumb, it's fine to give your chickens "people" foods as long as they are not moldy. Don't feed your birds avocado shells, raw potato peels, banana peels, or any other items you wouldn't put in your own mouth. Many chicken owners supplement their chickens normal diet with meat or fish table scraps when their chickens are molting and we encourage you to do the same. The extra protein helps chickens grow new feathers during the molt. Table scraps combined with scratch should not account for more than 10% of your chicken's diet.

Liquid Supplements

Vitamins/Electrolytes - These supplements aid digestion and hydration in all animals including your chickens. Vitamins and electrolyte supplements can easily be added to your chickens water and there's ample scientific evidence to support their efficacy. Vitamins and electrolytes are particularly helpful during the summer months when extreme heat puts stress on your birds. Durvet sells a combined vitamin and electrolyte mix that can be purchased from good feed stores across the country.

Probiotics - Probiotics are a broad range of microorganisms that ensure the health of your chickens by populating their intestinal tract and literally blocking the growth of nasty bacteria by crowding them out. While we don't see probiotics as essential for adult chickens, we highly recommend using them for baby chicks whose gastrointestinal tract have not had time to build a population of good bacteria.

Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) - Many backyard flock owners add ACV to their chickens water and swear by it. We are far less enthusiastic about ACV and view the claims made for ACV with a high degree of skepticism. You won't hurt your chickens by adding small amounts of ACV to their water (1 teaspoon per gallon), but we just can't justify recommending it when there is so little evidence in favor of its use and so many other supplements where the evidence for their use is far more apparent.
