Free agent cornerback Stanford Routt has visits lined up with the Bills and Titans, but the Cowboys, Vikings and Chiefs have reached out to express interest in the veteran cornerback.

As of now, no official visits have been scheduled with those three clubs.

A native of Austin, Texas who played his college ball at the University of Houston, the 28-year-old Routt spent much of his first five seasons in a reserve role before starting 30 of 32 games over the last two seasons, totaling 104 tackles, six interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown, with 28 passes defensed.

The Raiders signed Routt to a three-year, $31 million contract prior to last year’s lockout that included $20 million in guarantees.

A 2009 seventh-round pick out of Miami (Ohio), the 6-foot-3, 250-pound O’Connell has caught 12 passes for 90 yards and recorded one special teams tackle in 27 games over the last three seasons.
It didn’t take long for the Chiefs to find their new offensive coordinator, as the team has hired 36-year-old Brian Daboll for the position.

Daboll spent last season as the Dolphins after two seasons as the offensive coordinator on Eric Mangini’s staff with the Browns.

Miami ranked 22nd in total offense, 20th in scoring offense in 2011, were 26th on third down and ranked 32nd in sacks allowed per passing attempt.

The Browns’ offense ranked 32nd and 29th in total offense and 29th and 31st in scoring offense during Daboll’s two seasons in Cleveland.

Daboll coached quarterbacks under Mangini with the New York Jets (2007-08) after coaching alongside with Mangini with the New England Patriots from 2000-05. Daboll has some familiarity with Chiefs starting quarterback Matt Cassel, who was a backup during Daboll’s final two seasons in New England.

Former Chiefs offensive coordinator Al Saunders and current Chiefs quarterbacks coach Jim Zorn were also candidates for the position. The Chiefs denied the Chicago Bears’ request to interview Zorn for their quarterbacks coach/passing game coordinator. With the Chiefs choosing another branch of the Bill Belichick coaching tree for the coordinator position, it’s possible that Zorn pushes for his exit from the franchise.

The Chiefs have a couple of names out there for their new offensive coordinator spot.

The team is considering Brian Daboll, Al Saunders and Jim Zorn for the position according to reports.

Daboll began his NFL coaching career with the New England Patriots as a defensive coaching assistant in 2000 before being promoted to wide receivers coach for the Patriots in 2002. After the 2006 season, he left the Patriots to serve as the Jets’ quarterbacks coach. In 2009, Daboll joined Eric Mangini’s staff in Cleveland as offensive coordinator. Daboll was named Offensive Coordinator of the Miami Dolphins under Tony Sparano in 2011.

Saunders was hired as the Offensive Coordinator for the Raiders under Hue Jackson. Saunders was not the primary play caller, as Head Coach Hue Jackson called offensive plays during his lone season as Raiders head coach. He was replaced by Greg Knapp when Dennis Allen was hired.

Zorn was hired last February as the Chiefs QB coach. He was a former head coach with the Washington Redskins, going 12-20 in two seasons with the Redskins before being fired in January 2010.

SB Nation reports that the Chiefs have a couple big names they want to sign and bring back in 2012, and that includes WR Dwayne Bowe and CB Brandon Carr.

Romeo Crennel’s interview with Soren Petro of 810 WHB was full of good stuff including the part where he said Dwayne Bowe and Brandon Carr — both impending free agents — are the first priority. “Those guys have done a good job for us,” Crennel said. “We would like to keep those guys in house. We know the free agency process is a difficult thing at times.”

GM Scott Pioli has said the same thing — that he wants to keep both of them. So we’ve established that the Chiefs will make an effort to keep both. Hopefully they will want to stay and we’re going to do everything we can to keep him. You just never know. But they are the first priority.” As for another Chiefs free agent, Crennel indicated that he would like to keep Kyle Orton as well. “He did a great job the three games we had him as the starter. He won two out of three. Not bad.”

Bill Muir, the offensive coordinator for the Chiefs last season, told the team this morning that he is retiring.

The Chiefs are looking for a new offensive coordinator but had asked Muir to return as their offensive line coach. Muir has served as offensive line coach since joining the Chiefs in 2009.

“I feel badly because they want me to stay,” said Muir, 69. “I’m not leaving because of anything that has gone on or is going on or will go on with the Chiefs. This is a personal decision. It’s very personal. I’ve been denying myself a lot of things over the years but I’m at a point in my life where I want to do some other things.”

After finishing the season on injured reserve with a surgically-repaired passing and watching Kyle Orton start the final three games, Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel is prepared to compete for the team’s starting job, Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star reports.

“There’s competition every year,” said Cassel. “If you play this position, there’s always competition. You’re competing against yourself, you’re competing against somebody else. Whoever they bring in, you always compete and you always have to go out and try to get better.”

Franchised by the Patriots and traded to the Chiefs in 2009, Cassel has completed 57.2 percent of 1,212 pass attempts for 7,753 yards with 53 touchdowns and 32 interceptions in his 39 starts for the Chiefs. Cassel earned Pro Bowl honors in 2010 after a 3,116-yard season that included a nearly 4:1 touchdown-to-interception ratio as the Chiefs won the AFC West and returned to the playoffs for the first time in four seasons.

The Chiefs have already paid Cassel over $40 million in the first three seasons of his six-year, $63 million contract (actually a five-year, $48.5 million extension to his one-year franchise tag of $14.65 million) that includes a $5.75 million base salary and $7.575 million cap number in 2012.

Cassel and 2011 fifth-round pick Ricky Stanzi are the only quarterbacks signed for 2012, though Tyler Palko will be a restricted free agent. According to Teicher, Orton expects to move on and Cassel has received a vote of confidence from head coach Romeo Crennel.

“Matt Cassel has won here. We’ve been to a playoff with Matt Cassel,” Crennel said this week. “I don’t think that Matt Cassel has fallen off the wagon overnight. I think he’s a good talent. He’s a good quarterback and he’s taken us to a playoff. So I anticipate that he can do it again.”
