If you're a fan of children's literature but not already familiar with children's author and illustrator Brian Selznick, all of that is about to change.

Selznick's 2008 Caldecott Award-winning book, The Invention of Hugo Cabret, debuted last November as Academy Award-winning director Martin Scorsese's first 3D family film Hugo, and was just nominated for 11 Academy Awards including Best Picture.

Meanwhile, Selznick's newest children's graphic novel, Wonderstruck, was recently published by Scholastic Books to rave reviews.

And now, the Brian Selznick trifecta continues right here in Chicago when Chicago Children's Theatre unleashes The Houdini Box, a world premiere musical adventure based on Selznick's popular first novel about a mischievous boy who receives a special box that just might contain the secrets of Harry Houdini's success.

Master puppeteer Blair Thomas will direct and create sets and puppets for CCT's The Houdini Box, already a recipient of two prestigious development grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. Book and lyrics are by Hannah Kohl, with original music by Mark Messing, music director of Chicago's #1 circus punk marching band Mucca Pazza.

Performances of Chicago Children's Theatre's The Houdini Box are Jan. 24-Mar. 4, 2012 at the Mercury Theater, 3745 N. Southport Avenue, Chicago.   Note: Subsequent Friday 7 pm performances on Feb. 3, Feb. 10 and Feb. 24 will be an expanded "An Evening of Magic," including the show followed by award-winning magician Brett Schneider performing amazing feats of magic and illusion. Chicago's F.A.M.E. Benefit at Rockit Ranch Still Seeking Performers Through Feb 15th!

Chicago's F.A.M.E. Benefit at Rockit Ranch is coming up soon on March 8th. The foundation is currently reviewing auditions for a few more performance slots in that show. The link is here : http://fame-chicago.org/3.html. The event is being promoted by Chicago's Billy Dec & Windy City Live, so it should be an amazing night! FAME has started up to raise money to provide grants and scholarships for Chicago children in the arts.

Steffan, a young Chicago actor, model, and musician was asked to be one of the performers at the Chicago's F.A.M.E. Benefit at Rockit Ranch on March 8th. He has his roots in musical theatre, but last year he was pulled away a bit from that when he was cast one of only five kids from thousands of auditions from across the country to represent KidzBop.

We've corresponded with his mom, via e-mail, and plan to do an in depth feature soon.   According to her, KidsBop has been an incredible opportunity for him, but his true dream is to share his original work as a solo artist one day. He is an incredible musician who reads & writes music. He has six original songs in the copyright process right now. Steffan actually plays six instruments -- guitar, piano, cello, french horn, ukulele & percussion.

His mom also acknowledged that some of our edgier readers are bound to consider KidzBop "kind of mainstream fluff that sometimes gets a bad wrap." However, she wisely states that those who would bash it are never the people who it's created for. The idea is to take the mainstream music that parents & older teen siblings are listening to, and make a (non-swearing/non-negative) version of those songs that are more appropriate for younger kids. She told us Steffan is really having a blast with it. But, he has more of a personal edge for music. His all time favorite band/singer is Christofer Drew - NeverShoutNever. Here's our prior coverage of Wally Dogger's CD release party last year at Beat Kitchen.   In that signature synchronicity way things have of cropping up, they played out with The Noses, renowned LA play write, Brett Neveu's band. That week we had just reviewed opening night of Bretts amazing show, Odradeck, at The House Theatre. And we were just about to check out another of Brett's works, The Earl, at A Red Orchid Theatre.   A year has past and guess what we just saw at A Red Orchid Theatre Friday?!   You guessed it, another Brett Neveu play, Megacosm.

This one'll cost ya, but only $15, and they're world renowned musicians and well worth it. We're hoping to set up a video interview soon with Jeff Parker and his partner who have a baby boy.   She's a filmmaker and college professor out in California.   Jeff also has an older, elementary age daughter we've known since Sagezilla was in a playgroup with her at age 2!

The son of the drummer for Tortoise was also in playgroup with our girls, along with a virtual whose who of chicago theatre and music peeps progeny.   We'd love to interview Jeff and Johnny Herndon and their partners, for our ongoing series on how creatives parent and how parents create. Calumet Photo Rocks!

Yesterday, in the middle of the blizzard, the awesome rental guys at Calumet Photo set me up with a Canon 7D for the weekend, so I can do Bluegrass and Blues Fest justice at Auditorium Theatre tonight.   We'll be shooting tonight and again next Saturday at Congress Theatre.

I can't tell you how stoked I am to check out this camera in action.   I've been shooting for 30+ years for fun and then for work, and shooting shows steadily for 2. And I've been ogling this sweet camera for years!

We'll have a photo filled CBB Fest feature up soon and a camera review as well. Wish I would have had it for Led Zeppelin 2 at House of Blues last Saturday, when I shot over 8 gigs of stills.   We'll have those edited & posted in the very near future.

Calumet has two Chi-Town locations and I've been impressed with them every time I've come in. I bought my most recent Canon lens there and the staff is knowledgeable and helpful. Their tag line "Calumet, It's Where The Pros Go" is true. My husband has worked in location sound, in the TV/film industry, for 25+ years, and the local cameramen and visiting crews shooting here all frequent Calumet.   I'd love to write more, but we've got a show to shoot.

History
In 1939, Kenneth Becker formed Calumet Manufacturing Company in Chicago. Originally, he sold sporting goods and just a few cameras through the store. Eventually, Calumet began to manufacture stainless steel developing trays and other darkroom equipment.

In 1955, Kodak decided to get out of the view camera business, selling Calumet the rights to its Master View 4x5 camera. It set the course for other photographic innovations by Calumet in the 1960s, such as the Caltar large format lens line, the C-2 roll film holder and the nitrogen burst film and print processors.
In 1980, after 40 years of manufacturing and selling its mostly large-format proprietary product lines, Calumet became a full-line supplier of professional photographic products. The result was the first photo supply catalog. Calumet sells high-quality products. We never sell "gray market" products, products that are not kept within the manufacturer-to-distributor-to-dealer network. For example, we sell only fresh film and paper.

"Calumet makes purchasing equipment and supplies, as well as equipment rental, extremely easy. Since it is a nationwide network, I usually pick up supplies for a shoot when I arrive if the location is near a Calumet retail outlet. Mickle Maher‘s The Hunchback Variations (2001) has been one of the most successful productions in Oobleck’s 23-year history—presented to critical acclaim over the last decade in Chicago, St. Louis, Washington D.C., and Hamburg, Germany.

The Hunchback Variations takes the form of a panel discussion between Quasimodo, hunchback of Notre Dame, and Ludwig van Beethoven, composer, on their attempt to create a mysterious sound effect called for in Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard. Playing out over 11 scenes, or “variations,” the story details the duo’s collaboration—one doomed by their mutual deafness, their unpleasant working conditions, and the fact that Beethoven has not yet finished reading the The Cherry Orchard.

A deft deconstruction of the creative process, and a fearless investigation of artistic collaboration, Hunchback is driven by questions about the nature of music and sound and performance. So, what could be more natural than to throw it fully – collaboratively!—into the embrace of music and sound and performance by giving it over to the wildly innovative mind of composer Mark Messing, the genius behind the scores of numerous Redmoon productions, and co-founder of the mad, brilliant marching band, Mucca Pazza?

We had the great pleasure of seeing the show on opening night. We were blown away by the choreography, and the excellent orchestra, prominently featured on stage instead of tucked away in the orchestra pit. With booming, seductive vocals by Frank Sinatra himself, overlaid with the live, big band, I kept catching myself looking for the singer, even though I knew better! Come Fly Away is flying from Chi-town the 22nd, so don't miss your chance. The dancing was exquisite, moving and the perfect balance between classic and contemporary. We particularly loved the "drunken dancers" reminiscent of drunken masteresque kung fu movie choreography. That takes talent to pull off! The emotions shone through, whether the dances were angry, playfully flirtatious, bumbling, sorrowful or sexy and provided a perfect compliment to Sinatra's classics. If a picture's worth a thousand words, this wordless wonder just might provide a picture perfect evening of enjoyment.

When Nick’s virtual world collides with the real world, his fantasies of love, intimacy, obsession and betrayal spiral into consequences that lead him to the brink of death. dark play or stories for boys was first produced as part the Humana Festival at Actor's Theatre of Louisville. Murrillo is the winner of National Latino Playwriting Award (2006) and the Otis Guernsey New Voices in American Playwriting Award at the 28th annual William Inge Theatre Festival. Murillo currently serves as the Head of Playwrighting Program at The Theatre School at DePaul University.

We're huge fans of The Chicago Park District and have taken numerous classes through them since the kids were born. There's a long overdue, more user friendly, Chicago Park District Site up. And finally, family information will be saved in the system! Can't say I'll miss the writer's cramp from filling out a zillion emergency and registration forms...multiple times...for both kids...at numerous parks...every 10 weeks. Everyone needs to sign up again, even if you had an account on the old site, but once you're in, you're in!

February 6th, spring classes will be listed on the site. February 21st, on line registration with the new site opens at 9am.

We are pleased to announce I Am Logan Square (IALS)'s first new media exhibition, Film Is Dead: Edges of the Digital Frame, a video exhibition that celebrates the new wave of underground cinema featuring works by Nelson Carvajal and Amir George. The exhibition's opening reception will be held on Thursday, February 2nd from 6 to 8:30 pm, at the I Am Logan Square Gallery, located at 2644 N. Milwaukee Avenue. To coincide with the opening of Film is Dead, IALS will also host an Industry night on Tuesday, January 31st at Cafe con Leche/D'Noche with esteemed professionals from the film sector.

Film is Dead: Edges of the Digital Frame will be on display through the end of February. The gallery will be open to the public Tuesday through Saturday, from noon to 6 pm and by appointment.

A Radical Video Exhibition That Celebrates the New Wave of Underground Cinema
“Film Is Dead: Edges of The Digital Frame” is a radical video exhibition that celebrates the new wave of underground cinema. Incorporating aspects of video appropriation, off-kilter narratives and culturally conscious video mash-ups, the works of Nelson Carvajal and Amir George represent an underexposed avenue of truly independent filmmaking—one that steers clear of traditional “film school” tropes and textbook rhetoric.

Film Is Dead: Edges of the Digital Frame, a video exhibition that celebrates the new wave of underground cinema, will open on Thursday, February 2nd from 6 to 8:30 pm, at the I Am Logan Square Gallery, located at 2644 N. Milwaukee Avenue. Revolution Brewing will be providing its signature bacon fat popcorn and seasonal beer for the reception accompanied by delicious treats by Paper Moon Pastry.

Carvajal, the exhibition’s curator and featured artist, helped launch Cinefile, a niche online networking platform for independent filmmakers. His handheld camera technique was a topic point in Jim Emerson’s (editor of RogertEbert.com) essay “Screw the Tripod” earlier this year. George is the head programmer behind the Cinema Culture. His festival platforms have included the likes of the Seen and Heard Music Video Showcase (in collaboration with Chicago Filmmakers) and guest curating a Salonathon video event for the Chicago Underground Film Festival.

Additionally, Carvajal will be a special guest at I Am Logan Square’s upcoming Industry Night on Tuesday, January 31st, centered around the film industry. The guest line-up will also include esteemed industry professionals Shayla Kloska, Marketing Director of the Logan Theater and David Schmüdde, Executive Producer of EarthCircle Films LLC and Associate Professor at the Illinois Institute of Art. IALS’s Industry Nights, designed to connect established and emerging arts professionals, take place the last Tuesday of every month from 6-8pm at Café con Leche/D’Noche, located at 2710 N. Milwaukee Ave.

Film Is Dead: Edges of the Digital Frame will be on display through the end of February. The gallery will be open to the public Tuesday through Saturday, from noon to 6 pm. IALS hosts monthly gallery exhibitions of works by local artists and accepts exhibition proposals on a rolling basis. Participating artists and/or curators must either live or work in Logan Square to exhibit their work and priority will be given to group or collaborative shows.

Rock & Roll Arts Academy Open House Jan 19-21

Following in the footsteps of School of Rock, Rock N Roll High School, Old Town School of Folk Music and other rock-ed cultural phenomenon, Chicago now has The Rock & Roll Arts Academy!

The Rock & Roll Arts Academy in Highland Park, founded by local "kindie" musician Mindy Hester, is open and ready to rock your littles! Headed by the awesome Ms. Hester, the local “kindie” band Mindy Hester & The Time Outs take a NON-TRADITIONAL but FUN approach to entertaining and educating kids of all ages through rhythm and music.

Here at ChiIL Mama, we've given away tickets to a number of Mindy's concerts and reviewed & given away a bunch of her award winning CDs. We even have a video interview with Mindy and her band that you can check out right here. We know she rocks.

Mindy’s band has already won two Best Song Awards at the Kid’s Music Awards for their hit songs, “Welcome to the Jungle Gym” and “Monster in the Closet” off their latest album “Juice Box Hero”. She also had a previous CD with the catchy title, Keep on Rockin' in the Preschool!

From January 19-21 they're hosting a Rock & Roll Open House at the Rock & Roll Arts Academy so that kids and their parents can learn origins of Beatles’ songs, dance to the psychedelic sounds of The Grateful Dead and say “Hey Now!” to the songs of Bob Marley! It's the opposite of "Baby Mozart" and our Open House event will showcase jam sessions, instruments and more. We're also looking for our next "Coolest Kid in Chicagoland!" and are hosting a video contest to find him/her!

Mindy’s background and experiences can offer NON-traditional tips on introducing music into the lives of your children and your readers’ children! Mindy started as an actress and musician and got her start at Chicago's famed Old Town School of Folk Music. She's taught for over 12 years and is just awesome!

CALLING ALL COOL KIDS!!! THE ROCK & ROLL ARTS ACADEMY KICKS OFF 2012 WITH THE LAUNCH OF A “RAISING COOL KIDS CONTEST”

Families are invited to bring their little rock stars to shoot contest videos during

Open House Jam Sessions, Thursday January 19th through Saturday the 21st

HIGHLAND PARK, IL (JANUARY 19-21, 2012) –The New Year brings new goals, and why not make this years’ goal to “Raise Cool Kids”? The Rock & Roll Arts Academy, the North Shore’s newest and hippest rock clubhouse for children, four months to 13 years, is launching its year long “Raising Cool Kids Contest” during its Open House Jam Sessions January 19th through 21st.

Families are invited to bring their little ‘rock star’ (or stars) to the Rock & Roll Arts Academy, located in the lower level of the Highland Park Community House at 1991 Sheridan Road, to make music videos on-site (for free) to see if they can take home the title of Coolest Kids on the North Shore. The videos will be uploaded (via YouTube) to the Rock & Roll Arts Academy Facebook Page, where the video with the most ‘LIKES’ by January 27th at 5pm, will win a free ‘Birthday Party that Rocks!’ complete with private live concert ($400 value), and the title of January’s “Coolest Kid in Chicagoland!” Videos will be shot on a first come first serve basis.

**Open House hours are on Thursday and Friday from 3-7pm and Saturday from 11am-4pm.**

The contest will run throughout the year with monthly music topic themes such as February - love songs, March – Irish Rock (think U2), April – rain songs, May – songs for mom, June – songs for dad, etc. The contest will culminate with a Coolest Kids Rock-Off against the 12 monthly winners.

The Open House will offer families an opportunity to drop in for jam sessions that will showcase the range of music programs designed to introduce and educate children to the musical global arts community by celebrating rock & roll, reggae, blues and folk music. This FREE interactive three-day event will encourage children and their parents to rock their hearts out, with breakout sessions highlighting individual genres and styles. There will also be a hands-on instrument petting zoo, signing sessions, raffle prizes, dance contests, and food and refreshments and more.

Headed up by the award-winning kid’s musician Mindy Hester, mom, actress and lead singer of “Mindy Hester and the Time Outs,” the Rock & Roll Arts Academy is a one-of-a-kind center for early childhood music education and parents alike. Recognizing the importance of NON-traditional music education, Hester brings to life the songs older generations grew up with, while putting new spins on them for their young. Not the ordinary Baby Mozart based classes, parents and their kids learn the origins of Beatles’ songs, dance to the psychedelic sounds of The Grateful Dead and say “Hey Now!” to the songs of Bob Marley!

“Sharing music enhances relationships and creates a bond between parent and child,” says Hester. “Not to mention, hasn’t everyone at one point in their life wished they were a rock star? Our classes and jam sessions provide a creative outlet for parents and their kids to learn, grow and jam.” Class ages range from 4 months to 13 years.

In addition to the Rock & Roll Arts Academy Open House festivities, Hester is joining forces with the Shops on Sheridan to create a “Rock & Stroll on Sheridan Road” event for the entire community. Everyone is encouraged to shop and stroll store specials along Sheridan Road, between Central and Park Avenues, and check out 15 new ice sculptures on display.

The Rock & Roll Arts Academy is sponsoring a “Name That Tune” Ice Sculpture Competition where participants can win one of 15 prize packages from local merchants, as well as a chance at the grand prize of a Squire SA-100 full size acoustic guitar with case, picks, strings and instruction booklet, for naming the rock and roll song, lyric or music genre (Roaring 20's, Fabulous 50's, Swinging 60’s, Psychedelic 70's, Hair Banging 80's) the sculptures inspire or remind them of. Contest forms are available at all participating businesses along Sheridan Road, and at the Rock & Roll Arts Academy. The contest will kick-off January 19th at 3pm and run through January 21st at 4pm. Contestants are encouraged to bring their completed forms to the Rock & Roll Arts Academy, where they will receive a gift certificate for a free drop-in class, or can be turned in to any of the Shops on Sheridan by the 4pm deadline. Winners will be announced on the Rock & Roll Arts Academy Facebook Page, and website, as well as participating Shops on Sheridan.

The Rock & Roll Arts Academy is a fun early childhood music program. Classes are designed for children aged as young as 4 months old to 5 years old, but adult counterparts will love learning about diverse music and its culture.
